Pacers-Wizards Preview

The Indiana Pacers' five-game winning streak came to end Friday, but they'll get a chance to get back on track against a team they've beaten in nine straight meetings.

The Washington Wizards they'll face Saturday night, though, are hardly the same club they last saw three months ago.

The Pacers try again to clinch their first Central Division title in nine years Saturday night, but to do so they'll have to end the Wizards' eight-game home winning streak.

Indiana (48-28) had won eight of nine heading into Friday's visit from Oklahoma City, but it failed to take advantage of a chance to claim its first Central crown since 2003-04. The Pacers trailed by one at the half and five after three quarters, but were outscored 25-8 in the final 12 minutes in a 97-75 loss to a Thunder team that arrived in Indianapolis at 4 a.m.

"Our goal above all else was to win the division, so we have to regroup tonight, prepare tomorrow for Washington, which has been playing tough at home, and go out and try to clinch this thing," forward David West said.

Chicago won Friday to keep its slim Central hopes alive, but Indiana doesn't have to wait long to get another shot to close it out. It's on to the nation's capital to face the Wizards, whom the Pacers have held to 85.0 points per game in three victories this season.

Two of those came in November and the other Jan. 2, 10 days before John Wall made his season debut. Since Wall came back, Washington is 23-19 - the Eastern Conference's fifth-best record - and a remarkable 17-4 at the Verizon Center.

The Wizards (28-47) have won by an average of 12.2 points during their win streak on their home floor, shooting a stunning 50.4 percent from 3-point range during a stretch in which Wall has averaged 23.8 points and 8.6 assists.

They haven't won nine straight at home since a 10-game run Dec. 13, 2006-Jan. 20, 2007.

Washington wasn't nearly that sharp Wednesday in Toronto, shooting 20.0 percent after halftime and blowing an 11-point cushion in an 88-78 loss.

"We did not come out with any focus," coach Randy Wittman said. "To be up 11 at halftime and then go through the motions in those first three minutes, let them back in it. We need that killer instinct, and we have not shown it."

The Wizards will need a little extra focus with Bradley Beal officially done for the season with a right leg injury, and Martell Webster had been providing some key minutes of late. But after averaging 17.6 points in 10 games March 9-29, he's totaled 17 in his last three.

The Pacers had hit triple digits in each game of their winning streak prior to Friday, when they shot a season-worst 2 of 21 from beyond the arc. Paul George missed all six of his attempts from 3, finishing with eight points.

George had 29 points and 14 rebounds in an 89-81 win over Washington in January, and the Pacers' ability to dominate the boards has played a key role in this series. Indiana has a plus-8.3 rebound margin against the Wizards in 2012-13, outscoring them by an average of 9.3 points in the paint.

Wizards mark '78, Wall has 37 in win over Pacers

WASHINGTON (AP) Wes Unseld walked onto the court with a cane. A new, bigger banner was raised. The fans received replica rings that included the phrase "the fat lady sings" - a championship catchphrase from so long ago that John Wall had no clue as to its significance.

But Wall is a student of the game, and he wanted to do his best in front of the old guard. On a night when the Washington Wizards celebrated the 35th anniversary of the franchise's only title, the team's current leader played like someone who might someday carry on that legacy, scoring 37 points in a display of speed and flair Saturday to lead a 104-85 victory over the Indiana Pacers.

"You don't want to lose on a night like this," Wall said.

Wall made 16 of 25 shots, throwing his palms up after making an improbable 14-foot sideways runner and flexing his muscles to the fans on the first row after banking in a fast-break layup. He even blocked a layup attempt by Roy Hibbert, the 6-foot-4 point guard rising to swat the ball away from the 7-foot-2 Pacers center.

Wall also had five assists, four rebounds and two blocks for the lottery-bound Wizards, who have won nine straight at home and are 18-4 at the Verizon Center this season when he's on the floor. He's also becoming more animated, clearly enjoying his best run since he was drafted No. 1 overall in 2010.

"I think whenever you're feeling good and you're playing good, you're more into the game," Wall said. "You're more enthused, you're more happy. ... After all the stuff I've been through this season with injuries and missing so many games, and having people say what they say about me, it means a lot."

Added coach Randy Wittman: "If he's going to give me 37, he can flex all he wants - and a win. You've got to let kids have emotions, just as long as we don't lose our emotions."

Unseld, Elvin Hayes and the other members of the 1978 team got together for a dinner Friday night and were honored at halftime Saturday. The franchise, for at least one more evening, was again known as the Bullets.

"I think our guys wanted to come out and not let them down," Wittman said.

The Wizards also spoiled a title celebration for the Pacers, who failed for the second night in a row to get the win they need to clinch their first Central Division crowd in nine years. Indiana also fell two games behind the New York Knicks in the race for the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference.

Hibbert had 25 points and 10 rebounds for the Pacers, but Paul George had the worst shooting game of his NBA career, going 0 for 8 from the field. He was 3 for 11 the previous night in a loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

"I've just got to get my legs back under me," George said. "Just get my mental focus back."

No one on the Wizards roster was born when the Bullets won their title. Before the game, five players in the locker room - Wall, Bradley Beal, Trevor Booker, Garrett Temple and A.J. Price - had no clue that "The opera ain't over until the fat lady sings" became the unofficial theme to the Bullets' seven-game series win over the Seattle SuperSonics in the finals.

She could've sung early Saturday night because the Pacers went cold at the start of the second half. The Wizards took a 51-48 halftime lead and turned it into 63-48, with Wall scoring half of the points in the 12-0 run. Indiana didn't get closer than seven the rest of the game.

Wall didn't play when the Wizards went 0-3 against the Pacers earlier this season because he was out until early January with a knee injury. Indiana coach Frank Vogel made his players acutely aware of that fact before the game, writing on the board: "He's a difference maker."

"He was too much for us to handle tonight," Vogel said.

Notes: Hayes on the halftime celebration: "If you don't win a championship, you're always governed by that. Because they'll say `Well, you're a great player,' like Charles Barkley or Karl Malone have to go through. They'll say, `You're a great player but you didn't win.' So this really put the cherry and the cap on our careers." ... Hayes also wasn't impressed by the Wizards' recent winning spurt. "You're getting a few wins right now, but you're not going anyplace," he said. "Plus you're losing the draft choices."

THE FACTS: For the second straight night, the Indiana Pacers needed a victory to clinch the Central Division title. For the second straight game, the Pacers came up short, this time at the hands of John Wall and the Washington Wizards in his squad's 104-85 win on Saturday night.

Wall scored 26 of his 37 points in the first half as the Wizards (29-47) won their ninth straight home game. Kevin Seraphin had 15 points and Martell Webster added 13 as Washington defeated the Pacers (48-29) for the first time in four games this season.

Roy Hibbert had 25 points and 10 rebounds, Gerald Green scored 13 and David West had 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Pacers.

Leading 51-48 at halftime, the Wizards opened the third quarter with a 12-0 run as Wall capped the surge with the final six. Washington maintained at least a seven-point lead from there and increased the margin to 21 in the fourth

QUOTABLE: "We're struggling to make shots. ... Look, we're a tired team. It's not an excuse, but we look like a tired team. We have to find a way to rejuvenate."

THE STAT: Indiana finished a dismal 3-for-20 on 3-point attempts after shooting 2-for-12 from beyond the arc against the Thunder.

QUOTABLE II: "Whenever you're feeling good, playing good, you're more into the game, you're more enthused, you're more happy. That's the good thing about it when it when we're winning. it's all equal too having fun with your teammates and enjoy it."

HOT: Wall made 12 of his 15 shots in the first half, including 7 of his 8 attempts in the first quarter for 15 points. His 26 first half points topped or equaled the Wizards' high-scorer in 67 of their first 75 games.

NOT: Indiana's leading scorer on the season, Paul George finished 0-for-8 from the field, including four misses from 3-point range, and had two points. He scored only eight points in Friday's loss to the Thunder.

QUOTABLE III: "We've just been sluggish. The energy factor hasn't been there, our mental focus hasn't been there. This .. .I don't know. We [have] got to find it though."
