After taking a step back in their quest for the final playoff spot, the Utah Jazz hope to seize another opportunity to move into an eighth-place tie in the Western Conference.

The Jazz will try to get back on track with their sixth win in seven games on Friday night when they host the New Orleans Hornets, losers of seven straight on the road.

Utah (39-37) appeared to be peaking at the right time with five straight victories to draw even with the Los Angeles Lakers for eighth place in the West.

The Jazz, though, fell off the pace following their 113-96 home loss to Denver on Wednesday. The Lakers, who did not play on Wednesday, regained a one-half game edge for the last postseason spot.

With just six games remaining, Utah will have to take advantage with three of its next four at home. The Jazz have won seven of their last nine in Salt Lake City and are 28-10 at home.

"We just got to bounce back," said center Al Jefferson, who has averaged 22.3 points on 60.9 percent shooting in the last four meetings in Salt Lake City.

Utah will again try to pull even by taking three of four from a New Orleans team that is winless on the road in almost two months.

The Southwest Division-worst Hornets (26-49) shot just 39.8 percent in a 98-88 loss to Golden State on Wednesday as their road skid reached a season high.

"Some of our guys had a tough shooting night, but we had more defensive breakdowns in the first half than we've had in full games lately," said coach Monty Williams, whose club fell to 10-26 on the road and hasn't won there since Feb. 11.

The Hornets, however, managed to hang with the Jazz behind Greivis Vasquez's 17 points and 13 assists in a 104-99 loss in Utah on Jan. 30. They also picked up their only win in the season series on Nov. 2, when Vasquez hit a layup with 1.3 seconds left in an 88-86 home win.

Robin Lopez has played well against the Jazz, averaging a team-best 17.3 points on 59.5 percent shooting.

The Hornets are expected to have both Eric Gordon and Anthony Davis this time around. Gordon (knee) sat out the first three meetings, while Davis left the first game after getting elbowed in the head and missed the second due to an ankle injury.

The Hornets will take any kind of offensive spark they can get after averaging 87.8 points over their last six road games.

They might be catching the Utah defense at an opportune time, since it has allowed 107.3 points - 11.8 above its home season average - on 55.2 percent shooting in its last three home games.

Paul Millsap led the Jazz with 25 points and 10 rebounds in the January win and has scored 19.8 per game while hitting 53.1 percent of his shots in his last four in this series.

After averaging 22.7 points over his previous three games, Mo Williams will try to rebound from a 2-of-12 shooting performance against the Nuggets.

Utah had averaged 108.6 points and hit 41.4 percent from 3-point range during its five-game winning streak before Wednesday's loss in which they made 6 of 20 from beyond the arc.

The Jazz have won 10 of 12 at home in this series by an average of 13.5 points.

Hayward, Millsap help Jazz beat Hornets 95-83

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Some players would stop shooting after a 1-of-8 start.

"He's not one of them," Utah Jazz forward Paul Millsap said of teammate Gordon Hayward.

Hayward scored 10 straight points in the fourth quarter and finished with 23 as the Jazz beat the New Orleans Hornets 95-83 on Friday night.

"You see the first one drop ... and the ball started going in," said Hayward, who scored 20 second-half points and hit 4 of 5 3-pointers after the break. "I credit my teammates for continuing to find me."

The Jazz (40-37) remained a half-game behind the Los Angeles Lakers for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Utah led by just four entering the fourth but opened the quarter on an 8-0 run, capped by Hayward's 7-foot jumper. He would follow with a pair of 3s, then dunk an alley-oop pass after a steal by DeMarre Carroll as Utah surged ahead 87-73 with 4:47 remaining.

The Hornets got no closer than 10 and scored just 16 in the fourth.

Derrick Favors added 10 points, 10 rebounds and a career-high six blocked shots for the Jazz.

Anthony Davis scored 24 and Greivis Vasquez added 21 for the Hornets (26-50), who lost the season series to Utah 3-1.

"If you would have said to me that Utah was only going to score 95 points and get to the free throw line 11 times, you would take that," Hornets coach Monty Williams said. "We just couldn't make a shot ... and there were some energy plays that I would we could have back."

The Jazz hardly looked like a team in a playoff race early. The arena was half empty at the start of the game and the Jazz were cold, shooting 29.4 percent late in the first as New Orleans built an 18-11 lead.

The Hornets led 24-17 after one, outscoring Utah 16-8 in the paint and 8-0 on the break while holding a 12-7 rebounding edge.

The Jazz used a 23-8 run to start the second quarter, building a 40-32 lead.

It started with Carroll, who hasn't seen significant playing time in weeks but helped turn boos into cheers.

"Carroll infused himself into the game and that was huge for them," Williams said of the 6-foot-8 forward nicknamed "Junk Yard Dog" because of his scrappiness.

In addition to Carroll, Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin used an odd combination during the run, with starter Millsap playing alongside reserves Jamaal Tinsley, Alec Burks, Carroll and Favors. The unit had played just six minutes together before but they clicked Friday.

Tinsley, Carroll and Burks had 3-pointers early in the run, and Carroll kept it going by diving on the floor for a steal to set up Millsap for a short bank shot.

"I scraped my knee, but that's part of who I am," said Carroll, who often goes to a fitness club with reserve guard Earl Watson after practice to continue honing his skills. "That why I think the fans love me so much. I go out there and leave it all on the floor. A guy like me, I don't take nothing for granted and I don't take no opportunities for granted."

Carroll finished with six points, three steals, three assists and three rebounds.

Millsap, meanwhile, continues to expand his game. He started 5 of 5 and was 7 of 8 at halftime. In the key second quarter, he converted a three-point play, passed inside to set up a dunk by Favors, and scored on a follow shot with 3:54 left in the half.

He finished with 20 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and a block.

"He's creating more," Hayward said. "We need that. He's becoming more of a dual threat as a passer and making plays for everyone else."

The Jazz will need that if they can get into the playoffs.

The Hornets are just trying to get through this road trip and the rest of the season.

Afterward, nobody seemed happy.

Not Ryan Anderson, who was 0 of 10 as New Orleans' bench made just 2 of 25 field goals.

Not guard Eric Gordon, who was making his first appearance against the Jazz. He finished with seven points but played just 18 minutes.

"I definitely want to do what's best for the team and since (Coach) took me out, he took me out," Gordon said. "But I definitely want to be out there for sure."

NOTES: Jazz G Tinsley left in the second half with a strained lower back. Burks sprained his right ankle after playing 13 minutes and did not return. Both finished with three points. ... Davis added 12 rebounds and three blocks for the Hornets. ... New Orleans shot just 41.5 percent and made 2 of 12 from 3-point range. ... The Jazz shot 50.6 percent and hit 11 of 26 3-pointers, with Hayward making 5 of 10. ... The Jazz are 31-6 when leading after the third quarter.

THE FACTS: The Utah Jazz no longer control their playoff destiny, but they did their part to stay alive in the Western Conference postseason race on Friday night.

Paul Millsap had 20 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists and Gordon Hayward scored a team-high 23 points as Utah grinded out a 95-83 victory over the New Orleans Hornets. The Jazz began the night a half game behind the Los Angeles Lakers for the last Western Conference playoff spot with five games left to play. Los Angeles hosted Memphis in a late game on Friday.

The Hornets, despite being long eliminated from the playoff chase, gave Utah a fight. Anthony Davis scored a game-high 24 points and collected 12 rebounds, and Greivis Vasquez had 21 points for New Orleans.

Derrick Favors had 10 points, 10 rebounds and tied a career-high with six blocked shots for Utah. Al Jefferson scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half.

QUOTABLE: "He struggled in the first half. I don't know if he made a basket in the first half. But he came out with a lot of confidence in the second half, was aggressive, took the right shots and we ran from there."

THE STAT: The Jazz's second unit didn't just give Utah a boost -- it also dominated New Orleans' bench. Utah's bench turned the game in the Jazz's favor in the second quarter, and it outscored New Orleans' reserves 22-11. The Hornets' bench couldn't throw it in the ocean, as their reserves combined to shoot 2-for-25.

TURNING POINT: Utah only led by four points going into the fourth quarter, but put the game away by clamping down on the Hornets. The Jazz held New Orleans scoreless for nearly the first five minutes of the fourth quarter. The Hornets missed their first six shots before Robin Lopez finished an alley-oop from Vasquez with 7:07 left in the game. The Jazz, meanwhile, scored eight unanswered points to go ahead 79-67. Randy Foye hit a 3-pointer to open the period, while Favors dunked in a lob from Foye and Hayward made a turnaround jumper to give Utah some much-needed breathing room.

HOT: Millsap was the only Jazz starter to play effectively in the first half. He scored 17 of his points and shot 7-for-8 before halftime. Hayward regrouped from a subpar first half when he shot 1-for-8 and scored three points. He shot 8-for-10 in the second half, scoring 12 of his points in the fourth quarter. He also tied his career-high with five 3-pointers. Vasquez had his way against Utah point guards in the first three quarters. He scored all of his points prior to the fourth quarter, before Corbin made a nice adjustment of putting DeMarre Carroll and Hayward against him. Vasquez still impacted the game though, dishing four of his nine assists in the fourth quarter. Davis rebounded in a big way after shooting 2-for-11 and scoring six points against Golden State on Wednesday. He shot 6-for-8 in the second half and scored the third-highest point total of his rookie year. He also recorded his 18th double-double of the season.

NOT: Ryan Anderson is known as one of the more consistent sharpshooters in the league, but he was the complete opposite of that against the Jazz. He shot 0-for-10 overall and missed four 3-pointers. His production was sorely missed as he's New Orleans' second-leading scorer and he's led the team in scoring in 25 games. Other Hornet bench players Xavier Henry (0-for-5) and Brian Roberts (1-for-6) didn't help much either. For the Jazz, Foye struggled from 3-point range for the second straight game. He shot 2-for-7 from beyond the arc.

QUOTABLE II: "That's what I do, come in the game, bring energy, do the hustle things, the little things that are going to get my team going. I've been doing it all year and I just had another opportunity open up and I just tried to take advantage of it."

GOOD MOVE: The Jazz badly needed an energy spark and got it when Corbin inserted Carroll into the game late in the first quarter. Carroll had received the dreaded DNP-CD (did not play-coach's decision) in seven of Utah's last 11 games after Hayward returned to the starting lineup. He immediately made an impact against the Hornets, making hustle plays and scoring occasional baskets. He played 12 minutes in the first half, had five points, two assists, two steals and a rebound. When Carroll entered the game, the Jazz trailed 18-11. When he left, Utah led 42-34.

BAD MOVE: Hornets coach Monty Williams and point guard Eric Gordon got into a screaming match during a timeout with 8:37 left in the third quarter. Millsap had just scored on a putback to put Utah ahead 55-47 and New Orleans called a timeout. Williams was visibly agitated, yelling in Gordon's direction. He had to be held back by assistant coach Randy Ayers after Gordon hollered back at him, and when the team went to the sidelines, Williams continued screaming at Gordon. Gordon, the team's leading scorer, did not return to the game after the confrontation. The incident was indicative of an overall disjointed effort by New Orleans. The Hornets played hard, but didn't play well together. They dished just 13 assists and allowed the Jazz to shoot 50.6 percent.

NOTABLE: Jazz reserve point guard Jamaal Tinsley suffered a bruised lower back in the fourth quarter and did not return. Alec Burks sprained his ankle in the first half and did not return. Marvin Williams (sore heel) dressed, but did not play in Friday's game. Millsap hadn't scored 20 points in a home game since Feb. 8.
