With time running out on their season, the Dallas Mavericks can't afford to let any more potential victories slip away if they want to reach the playoffs for a 13th consecutive season.

The visiting Mavericks look to avoid a third straight loss while trying to sweep the season series from the Sacramento Kings on Friday night.

Dallas (36-39) carried a seven-point lead into the fourth quarter Thursday night at Denver before it was outscored 25-17 in the final period to fall 95-94. The Mavericks, who lost by 20 to the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday, dropped the first two of a four-game trip that followed a 4-2 homestand.

"We just have to keep going; we have to turn this around (Friday) night and that's where it's at," said Dallas coach Rick Carlisle, whose club was outrebounded 18-9 on the offensive glass at Denver. "It is very disappointing; we fought hard. We did a lot of good things but when teams turn up the heat, we have to be able to get a big rebound in a crowd. We have to be able to execute and get a good shot and we didn't do it in the last minute."

The Mavericks have not missed the postseason since 1999-2000, but are 10th in the Western Conference and three games behind the Lakers for the eighth and final playoff spot with seven remaining.

Brandan Wright had a team-high 16 points off the bench as Dallas held the Nuggets to 39.3 percent shooting but allowed them to rally in the fourth and ultimately win on Andre Iguodala's layup with 2.8 seconds.

It did not help that veteran forward Elton Brand missed the contest with a sore calf that has bothered him all week.

"We gave this one away," forward Shawn Marion said. "We had a chance to win this game, and close out, but it didn't happen."

If the Mavericks are to make one final playoff push, a visit to Sacramento might be a good place to start.

Dallas has won four in a row and 14 of 15 against the Kings (27-48). The Mavericks won both home meetings this season by a combined 46 points but needed overtime to win 117-112 at Sacramento on Jan. 10.

Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki, who went scoreless in the fourth quarter Thursday after scoring one in the final period Tuesday, has been held to 24 total points in the first two games of the trip after averaging 29.7 in the previous three contests. He's averaged 13.3 points and shot 33.3 percent in the last three at Sacramento.

However, 36-year-old teammate Vince Carter has combined for 49 points in the last two against the Kings.

With the distraction of where the franchise will play next season still lingering, the Kings dropped their second straight overall and third in a row at home, 112-102 to Houston on Wednesday. Tyreke Evans had 22 points, Marcus Thornton scored 21 and DeMarcus Cousins added 20, but Sacramento shot 39.1 percent and looked out of sorts while playing for the first time in four days.

"Those (three) days we had off (were) kind of hard for us to come back and to be in real game rhythm," guard Isaiah Thomas said. "We started off slow and it kind of haunted us all night."

Evans has totaled 43 points in two games after being held to 47 in the previous four. He combined for 43 on 16-of-23 (69.6 percent) shooting in the last two against the Mavericks.

Mavs beat Kings 117-108 to snap two-game skid

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) Shawn Marion had 25 points and 12 rebounds, and the Dallas Mavericks snapped a two-game losing streak with a 117-108 victory over the Sacramento Kings on Friday night.

The Mavericks (37-39) used a 41-point second quarter to gain control of a game they desperately needed. They came in three games behind the Lakers in the chase for the eighth and final playoff berth in the Western Conference.

Dallas, which scored 99 points over the final three quarters, swept all four games from the Kings this season and has defeated Sacramento in 15 of last 16 meetings.

Isaiah Thomas had 29 points and Tyreke Evans added 26 points and nine rebounds for the Kings, who dropped their third straight game. Jason Thompson had 16 points and 16 rebounds.

Reserve Brandan Wright had 20 points for Dallas, which outscored the Kings bench 49-24. Darren Collison contributed 18 points and eight assists, and Dirk Nowitzki added 16 points.

DeMarcus Cousins, Sacramento's leading scorer and rebounder, was replaced in the starting lineup by Patrick Patterson for unknown reasons. Cousins entered the game at the start of the second quarter and finished with six points in nine minutes.

Dallas has made the playoffs 12 straight seasons dating to 1999-00, which was Nowitzki's second season.

Just getting back into the playoff hunt has been a major effort for Dallas. The Mavericks had an 11-10 record after beating the Kings on Dec. 10. But over the next month they dropped 13 of 15 games and had a 13-23 record on Feb. 9.

Vince Carter passed off to Wright early in second quarter for his 4,000th career assist. Carter, who had six assists in the first half, became the 15th player in NBA history to amass 22,000 points, 5,000 rebounds and 4,000 assists.

Trailing by nine points entering the fourth quarter, the Kings went on a quick 9-2 run to close the gap to 94-90. After a timeout, the Mavericks responded, running off nine straight points for a 103-90 lead with 8:27 left.

After a huge second-quarter output, the Mavericks followed up with a strong third quarter. Marion scored mostly from close range on floaters and had 13 points in the third when the Mavericks built their lead to 92-81.

Nowitzki scored nine of his 11 first-half points in the second quarter, when the Mavericks outscored the Kings 41-26. Collison also had nine points in the second for Dallas, which took a 59-53 lead into the half.

Thomas had 15 points, Evans scored 11, and Thompson had nine points and 11 rebounds in the opening half for the Kings.

Notes: Kings forward John Salmons made a 3-pointer in the first quarter to break out of an extended scoreless streak. He had zero points in 38 minutes Wednesday against Houston. . Thomas ended the first quarter with a 15-foot floater at the buzzer that gave the Kings a 27-18 lead. . Mavericks veteran forward Elton Brand missed his second straight game with a sore right calf that has bothered him all week. . The Kings have lost four straight at home, where they own a 19-19 record.

THE FACTS: The road weary Dallas Mavericks came into Sleep Train Arena Friday needing a win to stay in the playoff hunt after dropping a heartbreaker last night, and got just what the doctor ordered as the Sacramento Kings gave very little resistance in the second half and lost by the final of 117-108.

Shawn Marion was all over the court, finishing with 25 points and 12 rebounds in 33 minutes. Brandan Wright came off the Dallas (37-39) bench and methodically buried Sacramento with a basic, but unstoppable play set. The defensive specialist score 20 points on 9-for-14 shooting and Darren Collison added 18 points and eight assists in 30 minutes of action.

Isaiah Thomas had no problem scoring for the Kings (27-49), dropping in a game-high 29 points on 9-for-20 shooting. Tyreke Evans stuffed the stat sheet with 26 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Jason Thompson played the bulk of the minutes at the center position, finishing with 16 points and 16 rebounds in 37 minutes in the loss.

QUOTABLE: "It's just tough as a player. I always say when you have inconsistent minutes, you're going to have inconsistent production."

THE STAT: Thomas, the Kings starting point guard, played 36 minutes and finished with a single assist.

TURNING POINT: The Kings cut the Mavericks lead to 94-90 at the 10:17 mark of the fourth, but Dallas responded with a 9-0 run to put the game away.

QUOTABLE II: "I don't have to be given a reason, he [is] the coach."

HOT: Wright was unstoppable on the pick and roll, scoring 20 points on 9-for-14 shooting in just 26 minutes. The NBA is a game of adjustments and the Kings are still trying to figure out how to stop Wright, who averages 8.2 points per game on the season. ... Evans was also on a roll, cutting through the Dallas defense like a hot knife through butter. He finished with 26 points on 10-for-15 shooting.

NOT: John Salmons was a non-factor in this game, scoring just three points on 1-for-6 shooting. On the season, Salmons is either hot or invisible and there is no telling which he will be from one night to the next.

GOOD MOVE: The Mavs fed Marion all night long and the veteran wing responded with a big night, leading Dallas in both points and rebounds.

BAD MOVE: Cousins did something to draw the ire of Kings coach Keith Smart. Not only was he benched to start the game, but he played a total of nine minutes on the night.

NOTABLE: Vince Carter notched his 4,000th career assist in the second quarter. ... Smart benched Cousins to start the game, sitting his starting center for the first 12 minutes of the game before bringing him out to start the second quarter.
