Wizards-Raptors Preview

Lately, the Washington Wizards bear little resemblance to the squad that got off to an abysmal 4-28 start. While it may be too late to play for anything meaningful, the Wizards haven't let that deter them from playing their best basketball.

On the other hand, the Toronto Raptors' struggles keep escalating.

Toronto will host the Wizards on Wednesday night, three days after losing 109-92 in Washington.

The Wizards (28-46) followed that victory with a 90-86 win over Chicago on Tuesday. It was their eighth victory in 12 games, a span in which they're averaging 100.3 points while shooting 42.3 percent from 3-point range. They're at 93.1 points per game and 36.5 percent from beyond the arc for the season.

With a goal of surpassing Philadelphia for ninth place in the Eastern Conference, Washington trails the 76ers by 2 1/2 games. Extremely unlikely chances of making the playoffs also remain as 7 1/2 games separate the Wizards from Milwaukee for eighth.

"We want to, but we know we probably gave, like, eight games away since I've been back," John Wall said of reaching the postseason. Washington is 23-18 since Wall made his season debut after being sidelined with a stress fracture in his right knee.

"If we had won those games, we would be right there (in the playoff picture)," he said. "We're still fighting - we're not going to give up on the season - but that's a very long shot."

Wall playing possibly the best basketball of his three-year career has been a big reason for the Wizards' recent success, averaging 24.8 points and 9.0 assists over the last 13 games. He finished with 27 points, nine rebounds, eight assists and three blocks Tuesday.

The Raptors (27-47) were officially eliminated from the playoff chase with Monday's 108-98 home loss to Detroit despite a season-high 34 points from Rudy Gay. Toronto has lost seven of eight.

"It hurts," coach Dwane Casey said. "Our goal was to knock on the door and get into the playoffs. A couple of weeks ago we saw that light but it faded when we could not take care of games against Washington, Cleveland and Milwaukee."

The first of those defeats - 90-84 at home to the Wizards on Feb. 25 - began the Raptors' current 4-14 slump.

Toronto has been devastated by poor 3-point shooting lately, hitting 26.9 percent over the last eight games.

Landry Fields is listed as day-to-day for Wednesday after missing Monday's game because of elbow pain.

While the Wizards are as healthy as they've been all season - Nene returned Tuesday for 10 points and seven rebounds after missing four games with a sore knee - there is still some concern with Bradley Beal.

Beal scored 24 in Sunday's win over the Raptors - his first game after missing five straight with a sprained left ankle - but followed with eight points on 3-of-11 shooting Tuesday. He said he still felt some pain.

"It was bothering me. It was hurting when I was warming up," said Beal, averaging 23.0 points on 53.3 percent shooting in three games against Toronto this season.

Washington has a 2-1 lead in the season series despite Toronto's DeMar DeRozan averaging 21.3 points. Gay totaled 18 points on 5-of-21 shooting in the Raptors' two losses.

Valanciunas has career night, Raptors beat Wizards

TORONTO (AP) Jonas Valanciunas joked that the last time he went to the free throw line so much he was probably 13 years old.

Valanciunas went 16-of-18 at the line, scored a career-high 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Toronto Raptors past the Washington Wizards 88-78 on Wednesday night.

"From the start I was a new guy in the NBA, didn't know a lot about it and there's a big learning process during every game," said Valanciunas, who admitted he's starting to get more calls from refs around the league. "I was not talking to (the officials), not complaining about calls, maybe that helped me."

Raptors coach Dwane Casey has started seeing growth in the rookie, who had a career-best five blocks Monday in a loss to Detroit.

"The physicality of the game doesn't bother him anymore," Casey said. "Where before he'd kind of disappear a little bit, now JV is huge at the end of the games. You can go to him, he can make free throws, he can pass the basketball. Most of all, he can defend without fouling and I think that's huge for him, too.

"That growth on his part has been huge."

DeMar DeRozan scored 25 points for Toronto, which snapped a two-game losing streak after being eliminated from the playoff chase with the 108-98 home loss to the Pistons.

John Wall had 20 points to lead the short-handed Wizards (28-47), who announced before the game that rookie standout Bradley Beal will miss the remainder of the season with a right leg injury.

The Raptors entered the fourth carrying a 68-62 lead thanks in part to solid free throw shooting from Valanciunas and Kyle Lowry, who finished with nine points, eight boards and 13 assists.

DeRozan drained a deep two late in the fourth, stretching the Raptors' lead to 84-74, and Toronto held on for the win.

The Raptors, who shot 75 percent (27 of 36) on free throws against the Wizards, are second in the NBA in from the line since the All-Star break at 81 percent.

Trailing 50-39 at half time, Toronto used an early 12-4 run to pull to within two.

"We did not come out with any focus," said Wizards coach Randy Wittman. "That's where this group has to, on the road, put a team away. To be up 11 at half time and then go through the motions in those first three minutes, let them back in it. We need that killer instinct, and we have not shown it."

DeRozan put down a one-handed dunk on Nene, picking up the hoop and the foul.

Then Valanciunas, who led all scorers at the half with 13, took care of Nene defensively with a one-handed swat on the 6-foot-11 forward.

DeRozan pulled Toronto within one with a layup off the glass plus the foul, and Quincy Acy completed the comeback with a one-handed dunk.

"It definitely felt good," DeRozan said. "That was frustrating. We let teams jump out on us like that and then we got to fight our way back. We know we got to play like we did in the second half for 48 minutes.

"That's embarrassing when a team gets up on you on your home court."

Toronto opened the game on a 6-0 run and led for much of the first period, but Trevor Ariza capped off a 6-0 Washington run with a 3-pointer to put the Wizards up 24-23 after the first.

Rudy Gay, who scored a season-high 34 in the Raptors' loss to Detroit, finished with six points and eight rebounds. Casey said afterward that Gay was reduced to just 24 minutes because he twisted his ankle.

Landry Fields, who went to Los Angeles for follow-up tests on his right elbow Monday, was the beneficiary of added minutes as a result of Gay's injury. Fields scored three points in 17 minutes.

Notes: Beal, the No. 3 overall pick in last year's draft out of Florida, averaged 13.9 points, 3.8 assists and 2.4 rebounds this season.

THE FACTS: The Toronto Raptors (28-47) defeated the Washington Wizards (28-47) 88-78 at Air Canada Centre on Wednesday, snapping a two-game losing streak and tying the season series 2-2. Raptors rookie center Jonas Valanciunas scored a career-high 24 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, while DeMar DeRozan scored a game-high 25 points. Kyle Lowry added nine points, eight rebounds and a game-high 13 assists.

It was a tale of two halves as the Wizards took a decisive 50-39 lead into halftime, but the Raptors responded with a 15-4 run early in the third quarter and regained the lead pouring in 29 points, ten from DeRozan and holding the Wizards to 12, for a 68-62 lead after three.

The Raptors continued to get their shots as they challenged Washington on all of theirs and struggled shooting 3-for-14 from the quarter, making their last field goal with 7:22 left in the game.

The Wizards were led by John Wall's 20 points, Emeka Okafor scored 17 with eight rebounds and Nene dropped a dozen.

THE STAT: After shooting .422 percent from the field in the first half, the Raptors buckled down defensively in the second half and brought the Wizards' field goal percentage down to .325 percent for the game, specifically .190 percent (4-for-21) in the third quarter where they got back into the game.

TURNING POINT: The tone of the game changed right after halftime with the Raptors With the Raptors clawing back into the game, but never extending the lead to more than eight points, it wasn't until Valanciunas knocked down a pair of free throws with 28.8 seconds left in the game to put Toronto up 86-78.

QUOTABLE II: "I'm working a lot on the defense on the low post, they can still move me, but I'm getting better every day and trying to improve that I can handle with them on the low post."

HOT: The rookie Valanciunas was getting his shots to fall, shooting 4-for-7 from the field and career highs in free throws attempted and made, shooting 16-for-18 from the line. He finished with 24 points and 10 rebounds.

NOT: Rudy Gay was fresh off a season-high 34 points, but couldn't find the net on Wednesday, shooting 2-for-8 from the field and finishing with six points, eight rebounds and four turnovers.

GOOD MOVE: In the fourth quarter, Landry Fields picked up Wall as a defensive assignment and held him scoreless from the field, (0-for-3).

NOTABLE: Wizards rookie Bradley Beal was shut down for the remainder of the season prior to game time with a right fibula stress injury. Valanciunas' double-double was his eighth of the season. Fields was back in action for the Raptors after missing the last game getting tests on his right elbow.
