For a coach who has lost the key component of his offense so close to the postseason, George Karl doesn't seem very worried.

With capable backups at the ready at point guard, the Nuggets try to adjust without Ty Lawson on Wednesday night when they play a surging Utah Jazz team fighting to make the playoffs.

Lawson missed three games earlier this month with a strained heel before struggling through 20 minutes in Denver's 100-99 loss to San Antonio on Thursday. A further exam revealed a plantar fascia tear, sidelining the team leader with 16.7 points and 6.9 assists per game indefinitely with eight games remaining.

"Ty's job and our job is to figure out how to get him feeling 100 percent," Karl said. "I'm optimistic it will work its way out.

"You rest it and rest it. Once the soreness goes away and once it stretches out and the body figures out how to work it, he probably could be pain free. It could come in a couple of weeks."

Catching Oklahoma City, which the Nuggets (50-24) trail by four games for the Southwest Division title, may be too tall an order without Lawson. Holding off the Los Angeles Clippers for third in the Western Conference may be a bigger priority.

Guards Andre Miller and Evan Fournier will try to direct Denver's offense in Lawson's absence, and Karl is confident there will be little falloff for a team averaging 105.6 points.

"Ty is speed, an ability to push the ball. Andre has cleverness and cuteness," said Karl of the 37-year-old Miller, who averages 9.5 points and 5.9 assists. "But Andre likes to play the way we play."

Fournier, a 20-year-old rookie, is an unknown quantity. He had a season-high 19 points in a 109-87 win over Brooklyn on Friday but is averaging 3.7 points in 30 games.

"I think part of my job a little bit is try to put a team that kind of accentuates Evan's talents to play well," Karl said. "The one thing I love about (Fournier) is he's a confident guy."

Miller and Fournier will be put to the test against a Jazz team that has found its offensive groove, averaging 108.6 points and 52.0 percent shooting during a season-high five-game winning streak. Utah has also displayed a strong outside game during the run, making 41.4 percent (36 of 87) of its 3-point shots.

The Jazz (39-36) are in a battle with the Lakers and Dallas for the final playoff spot in the West and coming off a 112-102 win over Portland on Monday. Al Jefferson scored 24 points and Mo Williams went 6 of 7 from beyond the arc, adding 20 points as six Utah players finished in double figures.

"You can tell that Mo is getting back in his groove, playing the way he wants to play," Jefferson said of Williams, averaging 17.0 points, 6.6 assists and 51.7 percent shooting. "He's scoring, getting people involved and playing good defense and everybody is jumping on his bandwagon. It starts with him."

Williams missed the last two games against the Nuggets due to foot and thumb injuries and was a non-factor in a 104-84 loss at Denver on Nov. 9. The Nuggets have won both home games in the season series sandwiched around a 105-103 road loss Nov. 26.

Jefferson may be happy to be playing the Nuggets at home as opposed to in Denver. He scored 28 points and made 10 of 15 in the November win but totaled 16 while going 5 for 22 in the two defeats at the Pepsi Center.

Gallinari, Faried help Nuggets knock Jazz into 9th

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) The Utah Jazz are on the outside looking in again.

After winning five straight, four against non-playoff teams, they ran into the real deal Wednesday night against the Denver Nuggets. And the result wasn't pretty.

Danilo Gallinari scored 21 points, including nine straight in the fourth quarter, and the Nuggets rolled to a 113-96 victory.

The loss knocked Utah (39-37) a half-game behind the idle Los Angeles Lakers for the eighth Western Conference playoff spot.

"I hope you guys weren't expecting us to win 11 in a row," said Jazz point guard Mo Williams, held to 2-of-12 shooting and four points after averaging 22.7 points over the previous three games. "Give them credit. That's a good basketball team. They cause a lot of matchup problems."

The Nuggets won by 17 despite being without leading scorer Ty Lawson because of a foot injury.

Kenneth Faried added 19 points, eight rebounds and two blocks for Denver (51-24), which took three of four from the Jazz this season.

"It's a solid win for us in a race that is probably going to go down to the last week," Nuggets coach George Karl said of battling for third place in the West. "In a way I hate helping the Lakers, but now maybe they can help us."

The Lakers face Memphis and the Clippers next, the teams Denver is battling for the No. 3 seed.

The Jazz were a confident bunch going in, especially after making 19 3-pointers in the previous two games. Randy Foye hit 8 of 9 against Brooklyn, and Williams 6 of 7 in a win over Portland.

The Jazz made just 6 of 20 from beyond the arc Wednesday, with Williams 0 of 3 and Foye 2 of 8.

Foye knew what was coming.

"We're not going to let you tear us up tonight from the 3-point line," he said of comments made by Corey Brewer and Andre Iguodala early. "I tried to do some different things, but (Denver is) so big and athletic it seemed like they were everywhere. They just mucked everything up, switched everything. They make it tough. They're smart."

Add in fast and physical.

Denver outscored Utah 58-38 in the paint and 19-13 on the break in leading by as many as 21. The Nuggets also shot 56 percent and outrebounded Utah 42-33, with Kosta Koufos corralling 13 boards.

Denver's bench also came up huge, with Evan Fournier shooting 7 of 9 for 18 points, Brewer adding 14 and Wilson Chandler 10.

"If you go in that locker room, there would probably be a fight. Our bench thinks they are better than the starters," Karl quipped.

Jazz big man Al Jefferson, who finished with 16 points and nine rebounds, said his team settled for too many jumpers.

"We got caught up in their game and they made us pay for it," he said.

Denver opened the third quarter on an 8-0 run to take a 64-51 lead. Iguodala hit a 3, Gallinari converted a three-point play and Iguodala scored on a reverse dunk. Utah missed its first six shots in the quarter and didn't make a field goal until the 7:11 mark.

The Nuggets bumped their lead to 71-56 after Faried's dunk off a long pass by Andre Miller, who finished with 13 points and six assists. A 6-0 Utah run, capped by Gordon Hayward's long jumper, pulled the Jazz within 74-65 in the third.

The crafty Miller, who recently turned 37, quieted the fans by feeding Iguodala for another dunk, then stealing the ball to set up a 3-pointer for Brewer and 79-66 Nuggets lead.

"He's just smart," Foye said of Miller, who 15 years ago was playing in a Final Four for the University of Utah. "He plays at his own pace. No one is going to make him hurry. He does a good job controlling the tempo."

Paul Millsap's driving layup pulled Utah within 82-72 with 10:46 left. Then Gallinari got hot, scoring on a layup, 3-pointer, two free throws and a dunk to bump Denver's lead to 15.

Foye's 3-pointer with 7:43 remaining was too little, too late.

"I put a lot of they blame on myself," Foye said. "If I make two or three of those, it's a different game."

Jefferson took solace in the fact Utah has six games remaining, with three of the next four at home.

"We just got to bounce back," he said.

NOTES: Nuggets coach Karl, a two-time cancer survivor, was asked about Monday's death of veteran NBA official Greg Willard to pancreatic cancer. "I'm getting old, getting savvy with every (cancer) situation," Karl said. "I think he knew how tough it was going to be. It's hard. When I come to Salt Lake City it's hard because (former University of Utah) coach (Rick) Majerus was here so many times. Even walking around going to dinner last night, it was emotional for me because I would be going to dinner with Rick." Majerus died of heart failure in December. ... Nuggets G Miller opted for the buffet served to media members before the game, saying he's been doing it for several years to spare the ball boys and change his eating habits. ... Jazz F Hayward picked up his third foul with 6:49 left in the second quarter but still led Utah in scoring with 18 points.

THE FACTS: The Denver Nuggets must have looked at the Utah Jazz's five-game winning streak, said, "that's nice" and gave them a figurative pat on the head before tip-off of Wednesday night's game.

Because once the ball was in the air, the Nuggets showed the Jazz what a really hot, true-life NBA championship contender looks like in a 113-96 thrashing of Utah on its home court.

Danilo Gallinari had 21 points and Kenneth Faried scored 19 as the Nuggets improved to 17-2 in their last 19 games. Former Jazzman Kosta Koufos had a game-high 13 rebounds for Denver. The Nuggets dismantled the Jazz without explosive point guard and leading scorer Ty Lawson, who sat out because of right plantar fasciitis.

The Jazz had a five-game winning streak snapped that featured four victories against teams with losing records. Utah fell a half-game behind the Los Angeles Lakers for eighth place in the Western Conference.

Gordon Hayward had 18 points, while Al Jefferson and Paul Millsap each scored 16 for the Jazz.

QUOTABLE: "In a way I hate helping the Lakers, but now maybe they can help us. They have Memphis and the Clippers the next two games."

THE STAT: The story of the game was how Denver attacked the basket and got close-range looks, and how Utah did not. The discrepancy was reflected in each team's points in the paint where the Nuggets finished with a 58-40 advantage. The Nuggets, who lead the league in points in the paint at 57.8 per game, didn't get their points in the paint in the traditional sense of dropping the ball into their big men and letting them go to work. Denver, instead, penetrated, cut to the basket and ran on fast breaks to get to the rim.

TURNING POINT: Denver came out after halftime determined to put the game away and did just that. The Nuggets opened the third quarter on a 10-1 run to take a 66-52 lead. Offensively, Denver took advantage of a sleepy and unmotivated Utah defense as Andre Iguodala started the spurt with a 3-pointer and later added a jumper. Defensively, the Nuggets locked the Jazz down. Utah missed its first six shots of the third quarter and Denver mostly coasted the rest of the way.

HOT: Denver reserve point guard Evan Fournier is coming on strong while getting more playing time because of Lawson's injury. Fournier, coming off a career-high 19 points against Brooklyn on Friday, scored 18 against Utah on 7-for-9 shooting. Fournier had never scored in double figures prior to his last two games. Faried was in full "Manimal" mode, hustling, grabbing offensive and defensive rebounds and scoring easy baskets. He shot 8-for-10, had eight rebounds and blocked two shots. Gallinari shot 5-for-7 in the second half and scored nine straight points during a stretch in the fourth quarter. Corey Brewer gave Denver a lift off the bench, scoring 14 points in 28 minutes while shooting 4-for-7. The Nuggets' bench scored 48 points. For the Jazz, Marvin Williams got some easy baskets by crashing the offensive boards. He had 10 points on 5-for-7 shooting in 22 minutes.

NOT: Utah's starting guards simply obliterated the Jazz's chances of beating Denver. Mo Williams (2-for-12) and Randy Foye (2-for-9) combined to shoot 4-for-21. From 3-point range Foye shot 2-for-8 and Williams was 0-for-3. The Jazz relied on both players too much to make long-range jumpers, as the two guards were hot coming into Wednesday's game. The Jazz were 0-for-5 from 3-point range and shot 33.3 percent in the game's pivotal third quarter.

QUOTABLE II: "I can't answer that because we didn't stop them. They are a fast-paced team and they make you pay for every mistake. They play hard for 48 minutes."

GOOD MOVE: Attack, attack, attack. That's all Denver did against Utah and it kept the Jazz on their heels throughout the game. The Nuggets easily drove past guys -- perhaps the most glaring came in the third quarter when Gallinari blew past Millsap for an easy layup. They also found open guys and dished to them when driving to the basket. They got whatever they wanted by getting the in the paint, executing pick-and-rolls and finishing. It was basically an offensive clinic -- and blueprint on how to score on the Jazz -- put on by Denver as it put up 113 points.

BAD MOVE: Utah completely got away from what had been effective for it offensively during its five-game winning streak. Instead of sharing the ball, playing inside-out and making extra passes, the Jazz mostly shot jumpers. They didn't attack the paint, draw fouls or put any pressure on Denver's defense. The Jazz took 18 foul shots, compared to 32 for Denver, mainly because they weren't aggressive enough in getting to the basket.

NOTABLE: The Nuggets clinched the season series with the Jazz for the just the second time since the 2003-04 season as Denver went 3-1 against Utah. Denver outrebounded Utah 42-33. The Jazz fell to 11-20 when they are outrebounded by an opponent. Andre Miller, who played at the University of Utah and got a warm welcome prior to the game, had 13 points, six assists and two rebounds. Iguodala and Wilson Chandler each had 10 points for Denver.
