Bulls-Wizards Preview

With a key matchup in the Eastern Conference playoff race upcoming, the Chicago Bulls can't afford to look past a Washington Wizards team riding their longest home winning streak in six years.

Despite their season-long run of injuries, the Bulls will try to continue their recent push toward home-court advantage in the first round on Tuesday night when they visit Washington.

Chicago (40-32) blew a late 12-point advantage in a last-second loss at Dallas on Saturday, but rebounded the following night by rallying from a 13-point deficit to slip past struggling Detroit 95-94 at home.

"We dodged a bullet," Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said. "We were fortunate, got out of a hole. ... We were just trying to find a way in the end."

Thibodeau's club has won four of five overall to move within 1 1/2 games of fourth-place Brooklyn in the East and has a critical showdown on Thursday when it visits the Nets.

The Bulls, however, continue to be without Derrick Rose (knee), Joakim Noah (right foot), Marco Belinelli (abdominal strain) and Richard Hamilton (lower back), though Thibodeau said Noah and Belinelli are day to day.

Noah nearly had a triple-double with nine points, 10 assists and 17 rebounds in an 86-73 loss in Washington on Jan. 26, while Belinelli scored 17 in an 87-77 home win on Dec. 29.

Luol Deng has given the club a spark lately, averaging 27.0 points while hitting 11 of 23 from beyond the arc in his last three games.

The Bulls have won four of five in Washington, but have dropped six of eight on the road overall heading into this contest.

It doesn't figure to get any easier for Chicago as they take on a Wizards team looking to extend its longest home winning streak since a 10-game run during the 2006-07 season.

Washington claimed its seventh straight home victory with a 109-92 victory over Toronto on Sunday and has won those games by an average of 13.5 points.

While the Wizards (27-46) have been all but eliminated from the playoff picture, they are within three games of Philadelphia for ninth in the East in part due to their surge at home.

"We're playing for something that's bigger than just nine games left," forward Martell Webster said. "Fighting for that ninth spot because for us, that's fuel for next year."

John Wall, who had 18 points, 10 assists and just one turnover on Sunday, has played a key role in the team's recent success at home. He's averaged 27.8 points on 63.5 percent shooting and 9.5 assists in the last four games in Washington.

The Wizards also received a huge lift with the surprise return of Bradley Beal. The rookie guard, who missed five games with an ankle injury, finished with 24 points off the bench and hit 6 of 9 from 3-point range against the Raptors.

Beal may have a difficult time building off that performance since he's totaled just 18 points on 7-of-25 shooting in two games against the Bulls.

Although Nene (knee) will be a game-decision for the Wizards, center Emeka Okafor had 15 points and 16 rebounds in the January win.

Washington has shot 50.0 percent from the field over its last six games at the Verizon Center, averaging 108.2 points and hitting 52.4 percent from beyond the arc.

The Bulls, though, have limited the Wizards to just 79.8 points per game on 38.1 percent shooting in their last eight games in this series.

Wizards top Bulls 90-86 for 8th straight home win

WASHINGTON (AP) The Chicago Bulls, trying to get home-court advantage in the playoffs, suffered yet another injury and had Kirk Hinrich tossed in the fourth quarter.

The Washington Wizards, vying to be the best team not in the playoffs, were about as healthy as they've been all season and have been unbeatable recently in front of the local crowd.

That made the game about even.

John Wall had another solid all-around game, and Emeka Okafor scored the go-ahead dunk in the final minute Tuesday night as the Wizards won their eighth straight at home, beating the temperamental Chicago Bulls 90-86.

Washington wants to pass the Philadelphia 76ers and finish ninth in the Eastern Conference. Not bad for a team that started 4-28, but it's the NBA equivalent of playing for the top seed in the NIT.

Tuesday's win left the Wizards 2 1/2 games back of the 76ers - and 7 1/2 back of the eighth-place Milwaukee Bucks - with eight to play.

"As funny as you might think it is, we're not eliminated yet," coach Randy Wittman said. "Stranger things have happened. Has anybody hit the Lotto in here? Let's go buy some tickets."

Yeah, right. Even Wall wasn't buying that.

"We want to, but we know we probably gave, like, eight games away since I've been back," Wall said. "Detroit twice, Charlotte, Orlando, Toronto, Minnesota. If we had won those games, we would be right there. We're still fighting - we're not going to give up on the season - but that's a very long shot. We've probably got to win every game; they've got to lose every game."

Wall finished with 27 points, nine assists, eight rebounds and three blocks. He's averaging 23.7 points and 8.6 assists during the home winning streak. Nene, back after missing four games with a sore right knee, had 10 points and seven rebounds. One concern: Bradley Beal, in his second game since returning from a sprained left ankle, is still in pain.

"It was bothering me. It was hurting when I was warming up," said Beal, who scored eight points. "When I had the fall in the second half, that's when it started hurting the most. I was definitely favoring it in the second half."

Carlos Boozer had 19 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Bulls, who fell two games behind the fourth-place Brooklyn Nets in the East. Chicago visits Brooklyn on Thursday.

One of the Bulls' biggest challenges was having enough players to finish the game. Taj Gibson reinjured his left knee in the second quarter and will have an MRI on Wednesday, and Hinrich was ejected with 3:19 to play for picking up a pair of technicals.

Gibson said the injury felt similar to the sprained MCL that caused him to miss 10 games recently. He returned on March 21 and is averaging 8.0 points on the season.

"Hopefully it's not worse than before," he said. "But it was real painful. It's similar. But it depends on how it responds tomorrow."

Hinrich was gone after teammate Nazr Mohammed was called for basket interference while tipping in a rebound, but the tantrum had nothing to do with the goaltending call.

"When I was complaining about a non-foul call, I got one," Hinrich said. "And then the second one was very quick afterward. ... In that situation, in the late game, you've just got to avoid that happening. I've got to bite my tongue and let it go."

Chicago was already without Derrick Rose (left knee), Joakim Noah (right foot), Marco Belinelli (abdominal strain) and Richard Hamilton (lower back).

"You've got to find a way in the end," coach Tom Thibodeau said. "Things went against us. We lost Kirk, missed some free throws, and we've got to do better."

Okafor's dunk, on a feed from Nene, gave the Wizards an 88-86 lead with 46 seconds to play. Jimmy Butler missed a jumper for the Bulls, and Trevor Ariza made two free throws with 8 seconds remaining to give Washington the four-point margin of victory.

Notes: Wall had the block of the game, using his right hand to slap away Luol Deng's fast-break layup attempt in the second quarter. "I don't think a lot of people think I can chase down blocked shots, but I do a pretty good job of it," Wall said. ... The Wizards' home winning streak is their longest since a 10-game run from Dec. 13, 2006 to Jan. 20, 2007.

THE FACTS: John Wall scored 27 points and Emeka Okafor's dunk with 45 seconds left put the Wizards up for good as Washington won its eighth straight home game with a 90-86 victory over the Chicago Bulls on Tuesday night.

Wall stuffed the stat sheet with nine assists, eight rebounds and three blocks while sinking 11 of 13 free throw attempts. A.J. Price scored 13 points while Okafor, Nene and Trevor Ariza all had 10 as Washington (28-46) took the lead for the first time late in the third quarter.

Carlos Boozer had 19 points and 12 rebounds, and bscored 17 for the Bulls. Chicago trailed 83-82 with 3:59 remaining when the referees called center Nazr Mohammed for basket interference on Kirk Hinrich's running bank shot. Hinrich squawked at the call and received consecutive technical fouls and the subsequent ejection.

Wall hit one of the two free throws putting the Wizards ahead 84-82, but Mohammed's jump hook tied the game at 86-86 with 56 seconds remaining, The Wizards jumped in front for good as Nene drove inside and fed Okafor for the score. Ariza made two free throws with eight seconds to play.

The Wizards trail the Bucks by nine games in the loss column, but Milwaukee only has nine games left on its schedule.

THE STAT: Neither team could score early in the fourth quarter, but the Bulls missed more over the final 12 minutes and throughout the game. Chicago was 7-for-22 in the final period and 39.3 percent overall.

QUOTABLE II: "The shooting part of it, there are going to be nights in which you don't shoot it as well as some other nights. Discipline defensively, you're in control of that. ...That's what we have to be able to count on."

HOT: With Bradley Beal's left ankle sprain flaring up, Wittman turned to reserve guard Price for the entire fourth quarter. Wall's backup played a starring role by scoring eight points including back-to-back 3-pointers.

NOT: Luol Deng scored 13 points and started the game 4-for-5 from the field. The Bulls' small forward ended it by missing nine of his last 10 attempts.

QUOTABLE III: "Just to know where we came from to start the season to where we are now, we have a lot of pride in ourselves. We want to close the season strong. This is the most wins I've had since I've been here. It feels great."
