Spurs-Grizzlies Preview

The Memphis Grizzlies are looking to set a record for the longest home win streak in franchise history.

All they have to do is beat the Western Conference's best team - and one that's certainly had their number of late.

The Grizzlies go for a 12th straight win at FedEx Forum on Monday night against a Spurs team looking to avoid its first back-to-back losses since mid-December.

Memphis (49-24) has the NBA's fifth-best home record at 29-8, limiting opponents to a league-low average of 87.5 points.

The Grizzlies haven't lost at home in nearly two months, winning their last 11 home games as they fight for home-court advantage in the first round of the West playoffs. Memphis is a half-game behind Denver for the conference's No. 3 seed.

"We're trying to get to that third spot, that fourth spot," guard Mike Conley said. "We're right there if we can keep winning."

The Grizzlies kept their home dominance going with Friday's 103-94 win over Houston, following it up a day later with a 99-86 victory at Minnesota. They held the high-scoring Rockets to 42.0 percent overall and limited the Timberwolves to 33.3 percent after halftime while outscoring them 54-36.

"I thought our defense kept us in the game," coach Lionel Hollins told the team's official website after the win in Minnesota. "We held them to 36 points in the second half and really clamped down and took control of the game."

That may also be necessary against the Spurs (55-18), who lead the conference by 1 1/2 games on Oklahoma City and are fourth in the NBA at 104.0 points per game.

Memphis has dropped six of seven meetings. The lone victory in that stretch came at home Jan. 11, when the Grizzlies won 101-98 after Tony Parker's 3-pointer at the buzzer forced overtime. Parker, who had 30 points in that loss and 30 in a win over Memphis in December, had 17 and 11 assists in a 103-82 home victory on Jan. 16.

The Spurs shot 57.9 percent in that win, the most efficient performance against Memphis this season.

While San Antonio ran away in that game, each of its first two visits with the Grizzlies was decided in overtime - and tight finishes are something the Spurs are getting used to.

Tim Duncan's three-point play with 2.2 seconds left clinched Friday's 104-102 win over the Los Angeles Clippers. They were on the other side of it Sunday, giving up a 3-pointer with 1.9 seconds to play in an 88-86 defeat to a Miami team that rested LeBron James and Dwyane Wade.

"It's good experience for us. It's good situations to put our team in," Duncan said of the late-game dramatics. "Hopefully, we can use that experience down the stretch somewhere and in the playoffs somewhere. We're going to stockpile that and hopefully be able to use it some other time."

The Spurs last dropped back-to-back games Dec. 17-18. One of those losses came without Manu Ginobili, who is expected to miss a second straight with a strained right hamstring.

Parker will try to do a better job picking up the slack after scoring 12 points with eight assists while making just 4 of 14 from the floor Sunday.

"Without Manu, Tony is the guy that's got to generate things for us," coach Gregg Popovich said.

Parker isn't the only Spur who's had his way with Memphis this season as Duncan has averaged 19.7 points, 12.7 boards and 3.0 blocks in the series. He's hardly played like a 16-year-veteran recently, averaging 24.1 points, 13.0 boards and 2.9 blocks over eight games since returning from a sore left knee.

The Grizzlies certainly need to fare better in the paint than they did in the 21-point loss to the Spurs, when they scored a season-low 26 inside. Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph were held to 23 points in that game, seven below their combined average.

Conley's bucket lifts Grizzlies over Spurs 92-90

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) Matching the most wins in franchise history was a nice moment for Memphis. The Grizzlies have their sights set on much, much more this season.

Mike Conley got Memphis to 50 wins by driving for a layup with 0.6 seconds left, and the Grizzlies rallied to beat the San Antonio Spurs 92-90 Monday night for their third straight victory.

The Grizzlies won 50 in a season for the first time since 2003-04, and they also won their 12th straight at home. They improved to 26 games above .500 in a game where Conley's bucket gave them their first lead since 18-16 late in the first quarter.

"We have loftier goals," Memphis coach Lionel Hollins said. "I'm proud of the players and the coaching staff and what we have accomplished, but I remember when the team got 50 before and we didn't win another game."

The Grizzlies lost their final four games in the 2003-04 season, then were swept in the playoffs - by the Spurs.

"Winning 50 is nice, but there is a lot more," Hollins said."

Conley scored the final five points and finished with 23. Jerryd Bayless had 17 points, Marc Gasol 16, Zach Randolph 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Tayshaun Prince had 11 points.

Tony Parker had 25 points for the Spurs. Parker tried to beat the buzzer with a jumper that was too late.

"They hit the biggest shot," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said of the Grizzlies.

Tiago Splitter added 13 points and 11 rebounds for San Antonio, which was not at full strength playing its second game in two nights. The Spurs left Kawhi Leonard and Tim Duncan at home with sore knees after both played in Sunday night's 88-86 loss to Miami. Manu Ginobili is out at least three weeks with a strained right hamstring.

With the Spurs missing three of their top four scorers, Memphis managed to split the season series, with both teams winning on their home courts. The Grizzlies are pushing to start the postseason on their home court in a tight squeeze in the Western Conference standings with Denver and the Clippers.

"We want to keep pushing," Randolph said. "We want to keep getting better ourselves, try to stay in third or the fourth spot and try to get home-court advantage. Try to get to that next level."

Conley won the game but he also went without a steal. That snapped his steal streak at 64 games, which had been the longest active streak in the NBA. Conley wound up with his second game-winning bucket to pair with a layup over Shaquille O'Neal on Dec. 9, 2009, when he drove right for a layup to beat Cleveland in overtime 111-109.

"I'm happy with stealing the game, rather than the ball," Conley said.

Popovich complimented Conley as someone who keeps improving each year.

"He is more confident," Popovich said. "He has expanded his game. He did a great job."

The Spurs now have had five straight games decided by a single possession, three of them losses. They also have lost consecutive games for the first time since Dec. 17 and 18.

"It's good if we're learning from it, and we're going to use it to be smarter come playoff time," Spurs forward Stephen Jackson said. "But, if we're not learning from it, no. Hopefully, we'll take all these experiences as we get ready to play postseason."

The Grizzlies edged San Antonio in points in the paint 40-36 and outscored the Spurs 30-22 in the fourth quarter.

San Antonio opened the game missing its first eight shots. The Grizzlies jumped out to a nine-point lead before the Spurs suddenly started hitting. The Spurs connected on 13 of their next 17 shots and wound up leading by as much as nine themselves with a 44-37 lead at halftime. The Spurs went up by as much as 50-39 in the third quarter.

Conley scored 11 and Bayless eight in the fourth quarter in helping Memphis whittle away at the Spurs' lead. The Grizzlies tied it up for the sixth and final time at 90 on a 3-pointer by Conley with 30 seconds left. Bayless said he tried to keep the play alive long enough to bait the Spurs into overloading on his side.

"Trying to keep on baiting them and baiting them, until finally I felt Mike could get enough time to get it off and he was able to get it off and he made the shot," Bayless said.

Parker had a chance to put the Spurs ahead but missed a 14-footer with 7.9 seconds left on the possession before Conley's game-winner.

"It's always a great game against Memphis," Parker said. "They're one of the best teams in the NBA. They played good at the end and got the win. So we'll have to regroup and stay together. It's a tough stretch for us right now, but we have to keep plugging and keep improving."

Conley's winning bucket, as he drove past Danny Green, gave Memphis its first lead since 55 seconds left in the first quarter.

Notes: Only Michael Jordan and Chris Paul have had steals streaks as long as Conley's since the Grizzlies guard was born in October 1987. ... Parker's had double figures in 56 straight games. ... The Spurs' last four losses came when they didn't score 100 points, and they average 104 points a game. ... The Grizzlies now are 21-8 since trading for Prince, Ed Davis and Austin Daye on Jan. 30. ... Memphis' 12 straight home wins now is the second-longest home winning streak in franchise history. ... The Spurs fell to 43-6 when leading after the third quarter. ... Randolph had his 42nd double-double.

THE FACTS: The Memphis Grizzlies may have discovered their new closer. First, point guard Mike Conley delivered a game-tying 3-pointer with 30.7 seconds remaining in Monday night's game against San Antonio. Then, after a miss by Tony Parker, Conley drove in for the game-winning layup with 0.6 seconds left to give the Grizzlies a 92-90 win at FedExForum. It was the second game-winning shot of his career. Conley led the Grizzlies with 23 points, while Parker paced San Antonio, who was without Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Kawhi Leonard, with 25.

QUOTABLE: "We actually had run the play similar to that a few plays before and I was open again. I told JB (Jerryd Bayless) if you get a chance, if you don't have a good look driving, I'm going to be out at the top of the key waiting on you. He found me and delivered the ball perfect. It was just routine, try to concentrate and knock it down."

THE STAT: Conley, the NBA's leader in steals with 164, entered tonight's game having at least one steal in a team-record 64 consecutive games, which also is the longest such streak in the NBA. That streak finally ended against the Spurs.

TURNING POINT: Every time the Grizzlies made a run in the second half, the Spurs had an answer. That was until the final two minutes. Memphis pulled to within 86-84, but Parker answered, hitting a jumper with 2:15 to play. But that wound up being the Spurs last field goal as they only managed a pair of Parker free throws the rest of the way. Parker missed what would have been a go-ahead shot with seven seconds left, then failed to get off a final shot when the Spurs inbounded the ball with 0.6 seconds left.

HOT: Conley has become a consistent threat offensively in the last month. In March, he averaged 17.6 points and 7.2 assists, scoring at least 20 points during a three-game stretch. Against the Spurs, Conley was 11 of 17 from the floor, scoring 11 of his 25 in the fourth quarter, including seven in the final 2:37.

NOT: San Antonio forward Boris Diaw failed to deliver a Tim Duncan-like performance. Diaw replaced Duncan, who was out with a sore left knee, in the starting lineup, but had just seven points on 3 of 12 shooting, and only three rebounds.

QUOTABLE II: "I thought our guys played hard and competed well. We moved the ball and shared the ball. I thought offensively we made a couple of mistakes at the very end of the game and Conley made a great shot. A lot of times in the NBA that is what does it, decisions down the stretch in the last couple of minutes."

NOTABLE: While Conley finished the Grizzlies' fourth quarter rally, it was guard Jerryd Bayless who ignited it. Bayless scored 10 of the Grizzlies first 14 points in the fourth quarter, with his last jumper cutting the Spurs lead to 80-76. Bayless finished with 17 points off the bench. ... The Spurs couldn't buy a basket to start the game. They missed their first eight shots and fell behind 10-1 before Diaw finally connected on a jumper. But by the end of the quarter, they had tied the game at 21 and led up until Conley's game-winner... The Grizzlies tied their franchise-record for wins in a season with 50, which they also reached during the 2003-04 season. ... The Spurs have now lost back-to-back games for just the third time this season, and first since Dec. 17-18. They have not lost three in a row all season. Next up is a home game against Orlando on Wednesday.
