Trail Blazers-Jazz Preview

After moving back into the final playoff spot in the Western Conference, the Utah Jazz have an opportunity to deliver another big blow to the Portland Trail Blazers' fading playoff hopes.

The Jazz will try for their season-best fifth straight victory and beat the reeling Blazers for the second time in three days on Monday night.

Utah's postseason chances appeared slim after a 113-108 loss to Dallas on March 24 to fall two games behind the eighth-place Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference. The Jazz, however, have responded with four straight victories to regain the edge over the injury-plagued Lakers following a 116-107 win over Brooklyn on Saturday.

While they have the same record, Utah (38-36) owns the tiebreaker for the final playoff spot in the West.

"When we were struggling earlier, I had a feeling that we would get out of it because the guys continued to work, they stayed together, they focused hard," coach Tyrone Corbin told the team's official website.

Now Corbin's club seeks its longest winning streak since closing out last season with five in a row.

Utah has already beaten Portland during this run, rallying late for a 105-95 road win on Friday. The Blazers (33-40) have been headed the other direction since trailing the eighth-place Lakers by just 2 1/2 games on March 22.

Portland lost its fourth straight on Saturday, 125-98 at Golden State, to drop 4 1/2 games back of the eighth spot with just nine remaining.

It hasn't helped that LaMarcus Aldridge, the team's leading scorer at 21.0 points per game, has missed the last two games because of a sprained ankle. His status remains uncertain.

Rookie Meyers Leonard helped to fill the void with season highs of 22 points and 10 rebounds against the Warriors.

It doesn't figure to get any easier for the Blazers in Salt Lake City, where they've dropped three in a row and 19 of 23 dating back to the 2001-02 season.

The Jazz are also seeking their seventh win in eight meetings overall and three of four in this season series.

Mo Williams scored a game-high 28 to key Utah's win on Friday and has 48 on 16-of-29 shooting in his last two games.

Center Al Jefferson has also given the club a boost lately, averaging 22.3 points on 54.1 percent shooting over his last three games. He's also scored 20 in each of the two wins against the Blazers.

While Paul Millsap had just nine points on 2-of-10 shooting on Saturday, he's scored a team-best 19.3 per game while shooting 54.8 percent in this season series.

The Jazz, who have scored 107.8 per game - 9.4 above their season average - during their winning streak, will be taking on a Portland team that has allowed 111.0 per game and lost by an average of 18.7 points over its current skid.

"We have to make it more of a priority in these last nine games to play more of a solid game especially on defense," Blazers coach Terry Stotts told the team's official website.

Point guard Damian Lillard has done some damage in this series, averaging a team-high 24.3 points.

Two of J.J. Hickson's 40 double-doubles have come against the Jazz, and he's totaled 38 points on 14-of-22 shooting and 25 rebounds in the last two meetings.

Portland, though, has averaged just 86.7 points while shooting 18 for 65 (27.7 percent) from 3-point range during its three-game slide in Salt Lake City.

Jefferson, Williams lift Jazz over Blazers 112-102

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) The Utah Jazz looked like a team on the verge of collapse 10 days ago.

Now they've won a season-best five straight to move a half-game ahead of the idle Los Angeles Lakers for the eighth Western Conference playoff spot.

"Look at the Baltimore Ravens," Jazz big man Al Jefferson said of the Super Bowl champs. "They started to play well right at the right time. We're clicking at the right time. We have seven more games to go."

Jefferson scored 24 points, Mo Williams hit six 3-pointers and the Jazz (39-36) beat the Portland Trail Blazers 112-102 Monday night.

"We're a team that's playing like we want to be in the playoffs," Jefferson added.

It helps that Utah is knocking down 3s, opening things up inside even more for its big men.

Randy Foye did the damage in Saturday's win over Brooklyn, going 8 of 9 from beyond the arc.

On Monday, it was Williams' turn.

He made a season-high 6 of 7 3-pointers and finished with 20 points as six Jazz players scored in double figures.

In the last two games, the Jazz have made 19 3-pointers.

Williams said he is just being more aggressive.

"I'm just playing," said Williams, who also had nine assists in pushing the up-tempo game. "I'm not even thinking about it. Let the plays happen. Let my natural ability take over."

The Blazers were within 79-72 after Eric Maynor's 3-pointer with 2:02 left in the third before Williams hit his fifth and sixth 3-pointers to give Utah an 87-74 lead going into the fourth. The Jazz opened the fourth on a 10-4 run, and never looked back.

Utah led by as many as 19 points, outscoring Portland 52-28 in the paint.

Jefferson, fresh off Western Conference player of the week honors, did much of the damage.

He made 12 of 21 shots, had 10 rebounds, two steals, two blocks and two assists. Paul Millsap added 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting, and Derrick Favors had 18 points and seven rebounds for the Jazz.

The win was Utah's second in four days over the Blazers (33-41), losers of five consecutive and still without leading scorer LaMarcus Aldridge because of a sprained ankle.

Wesley Matthews led Portland with 23 points. Rookie standout Damian Lillard added 17 points, including three 3-pointers to break the NBA's single-season rookie record (166). He finished 7 of 16 overall and 3 of 7 beyond the arc, with five assists and five rebounds.

"It's an honor to be able to do that," Lillard said. "But I wish I would have done it in a win. It's bittersweet."

Lillard, the No. 6 overall pick in the June draft, had averaged 24.3 points in three previous games against Utah this season. And he was enjoying a homecoming of sorts, having played just 40 miles north of Salt Lake City at Weber State.

But Williams made sure the rookie couldn't match him.

In Portland on Friday, Williams scored 26 of his 28 points in the second half. He was 3 of 3 from beyond the arc in the third Monday as Utah pulled away.

"You can tell that Mo is getting back in his groove, playing the way he wants to play," Jefferson said of Williams, who missed extensive time following thumb surgery. "He's scoring, getting people involved and playing good defense and everybody is jumping on his bandwagon. It starts with him."

The Blazers trailed by as many as 14 points in the first quarter. But another 3-pointer by Lillard and three-point play by Meyers Leonard pulled Portland within 29-25 with 10:35 left in the second.

Victor Claver and Matthews then got hot. Matthews was 4 of 5 in the second quarter and Claver made a pair of 3s, the second getting the Blazers within 47-46 with 1:57 left in the half.

Williams kept the Jazz ahead with his third 3 of the night and Jefferson closed out the half with a nice spin move around J.J. Hickson for an easy layup and a 56-49 Jazz advantage.

The win was Utah's fifth wire-to-wire victory this season, as the Jazz raced out to a 7-0 lead. They led 27-13 with 2:52 left in the first quarter after another dunk by Jefferson. Utah forced six Blazers turnovers in the first quarter, 10 in the half and 16 overall.

Now the Jazz can watch the two teams directly behind them in the standings, the Lakers (38-36) and Mavs (36-37), square off Tuesday night.

Utah then will get a huge test at home Wednesday against the Denver Nuggets.

"It will be good to catch them when we're playing really well, playing with a lot of confidence," Williams said. "We've just got to go out the way we went out the last five games."

NOTES: Jefferson on Monday was named Western Conference player of the week for the final week in March. In four wins, he averaged 19.8 points, 8.3 rebounds and shot 54 percent from the field. ... The Jazz were eying Lillard long before he started moving up the draft charts last year. "You have to admire the guy coming from the area here and having the success he's had after staying at (Weber State) for four years," Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin said. "I'm a fan from afar." ... Blazers coach Terry Stotts on sitting players late in the season: "If a player wants to play and he can play, then he should play." ... Lillard's college team is playing East Carolina for the CIT title Tuesday night in Ogden and his former coach, Randy Rahe, was at Monday's game. ... Unlike former Jazz point guard Deron Williams on Saturday or former Brigham Young star Jimmer Fredette, Lillard received a warm welcome at the arena on Monday.

THE FACTS: For the first time this season, the Utah Jazz have won five straight games -- and just in time for a playoff push.

The surging Jazz defeated the Portland Trail Blazers 112-102 to pick up their fifth straight victory and pull a half-game ahead of the Los Angeles Lakers for eighth place in the Western Conference. Al Jefferson had a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds, while Mo Williams had 20 points, six 3-pointers and nine assists for Utah.

Wesley Matthews had 23 points and rookie Damian Lillard chipped in 17 points for the undermanned Trail Blazers, who were without leading scorer LaMarcus Aldridge for the third straight game. Portland has lost five straight games.

Derrick Favors came off the bench to score 18 points for Utah.

QUOTABLE: "We're just playing like we want to be in the playoffs and that's the difference. We've just got to continue to play well. We've got a long ways to go."

THE STAT: The Trail Blazers saw how important it is to take care of the ball and keep the Jazz off the offensive boards in a loss to Utah in Portland last Friday. But they didn't apply the lessons learned. The Trail Blazers committed 16 turnovers -- the same number in the previous meeting between the two teams -- and the Jazz turned them into 19 points. Utah also had 10 offensive rebounds, compared to just three for Portland. The turnovers and offensive rebounds helped Utah take 83 shots -- 16 more than the Trail Blazers.

TURNING POINT: After building a double-digit lead in the first quarter and having most of it erased, it took the Jazz some time to put the pesky Trail Blazers away. They finally did during a 14-3 run that was bridged by the third and fourth quarters. Williams keyed the spurt by hitting two 3-pointers late in the third quarter, and Favors provided a highlight with a powerful put-back dunk. Alec Burks capped the run with a layup following an assist from Jamaal Tinsley to put Utah ahead 93-79 with 9:47 left in the game.

HOT: Williams shot 6-for-7 from 3-point range for the Jazz. Williams took the second-most number of shots for Utah, but he still ran the offense efficiently and finished with nine assists. Favors shot 6-for-7, scoring 11 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter. Paul Millsap had 16 points on 7-for-11 shooting for Utah. Portland point guard Eric Maynor, drafted by the Jazz in the first round in 2009, had a solid game off the bench with 10 points on 4-for-6 shooting and a team-high eight assists. Victor Claver scored a career-high 12 points on 4-for-5 shooting and had five rebounds for the Trail Blazers.

NOT: Matthews shot the ball well (9-for-13) and led Portland in scoring, but had just one assist and no rebounds. Utah's DeMarre Carroll has had limited playing time in recent games and looked rusty against Portland. He shot 0-for-5 and didn't score in nine minutes.

QUOTABLE II: "We've got eight games left and we understand that L.A. is a really good team with potentially four Hall of Famers playing. We've just got to take it one game at a time and understand that we control our destiny and that if we do what we have to do we won't have to worry what the Lakers are doing."

GOOD MOVE: The Jazz are getting the ball to Jefferson in his sweet spots, and he's delivering. Jefferson is tough to deal with when he gets the ball in the low post, and he's on a hot streak. He's scored 20 or more points and shot better than 50 percent in four straight contests. Few players in the league can handle Jefferson one-on-one, and when he gets doubled-teamed he's been passing effectively and getting his teammates good looks at the basket. When Jefferson makes good passes, it keeps defenses honest and helps the Jazz play inside-out.

BAD MOVE: The Trail Blazers were forced to play catch-up for most of the game after an awful start. On Portland's first six possessions, it shot 0-for-3 and committed three turnovers. In the game's first nine minutes, the Trail Blazers were a mess on both offense and defense. While falling behind 25-13, Portland shot 5-for-14, committed five turnovers and forced just one turnover. Trail Blazers coach Terry Stotts said before the game that Portland would play with a spoiler mentality for the remainder of the season, but it didn't come out of the locker room with any intention of knocking Utah out of eighth place in the Western Conference.

NOTABLE: Aldridge missed his third straight game because of a right ankle sprain. Lillard broke the all-time NBA rookie record for 3-pointers in a season. He made three against the Jazz and has 169 this season. He entered the game sharing the record with the Golden State Warriors' Stephen Curry, who set the mark during the 2009-10 season. Utah has won four of its five games during its current streak by double digits. The Jazz's average margin of victory during the streak is 12 points.
