After a strong start to a difficult home stretch, the New Orleans Hornets couldn't meet the challenge in their last two games.

Things aren't likely to be as tough in the finale Sunday night against the injury-plagued Cleveland Cavaliers, who are mired in their worst losing streak of the season.

The Hornets (25-48) lost to Golden State and beat Boston to open this season-high seven-game homestand before facing four straight games against four of the league's top six teams record-wise. That stretch began with victories over Memphis and Denver, which had entered with a 15-game winning streak.

New Orleans, however, couldn't keep its string of upsets going, falling to the Los Angeles Clippers and Miami by a combined 33 points in its last two.

The Southwest Division-worst Hornets appeared to be in the wrong place at the wrong time against the league-best Heat on Friday. After having its 27-game win streak stopped two days earlier, Miami made 60.9 percent from the field and 14 for 27 from 3-point range on the way to a 108-89 victory.

"We could have pressed up in our man defense a little more," said forward Ryan Anderson, who led New Orleans with 20 points. "We could have helped a little bit better."

The Hornets had allowed 85.0 points per game on 41.7 percent shooting over their three-game winning streak before giving up averages of 106.5 points and 53.5 percent in their last two losses.

They appear to have a decent chance at tightening things up against a Cleveland team that has struggled on offense lately without its starting backcourt - and top two scorers.

While Dion Waiters (sore knee) remains sidelined, star point guard Kyrie Irving has been cleared to play in this game. Irving, who had missed the previous eight games with a strained left shoulder, is averaging a team-high 23.0 points despite missing 22 games overall.

Cleveland is going to be cautious with Irving for the final 11 games, and the guard will be inactive for Monday's game versus Atlanta as "he takes the next steps in his recovery."

Irving and Waiters combined for 51 points on 19-of-32 shooting in a 105-100 home win over New Orleans on Feb. 20.

The injuries seem to have caught up with the team offensively. Cleveland has averaged 85.7 points on 41.1 percent shooting - including 15 for 55 from 3-point range - in its last three games.

"I can't worry about the guys who aren't playing," coach Byron Scott said. "The biggest thing with us is we need six or seven guys to play really well."

C.J. Miles scored 19 points and Tyler Zeller added 14 and 10 rebounds Friday, but Cleveland dropped its season-high seventh straight with a 97-87 loss to Philadelphia.

It doesn't figure to get any easier for the Cavaliers on Sunday considering they've lost 12 of 13 road contests against West opponents.

The Hornets, however, may be short-handed as well. Point guard Greivis Vasquez, who has missed two of the last three games with an ankle injury, is expected to be a game-time decision.

Brian Roberts started those two games in place of Vasquez and scored 13 points in each, but he had 18 assists in the win over Denver and only five Friday.

The Hornets have won four of five at home in this series.

Vasquez, Anderson lead Hornets past Cavaliers

NEW ORLEANS (AP) After getting off to a slow start, Greivis Vasquez was challenged by his coach at halftime. Vasquez responded with a strong third quarter to lead the New Orleans Hornets to an easy victory against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Vasquez scored 16 of his 25 points in the third quarter and the Hornets beat the slumping Cavaliers 112-92 on Sunday.

After missing two of the previous three games with an ankle injury, Vasquez was held to five points and three assists in the first half.

"(Hornets coach Monty Williams) called me out in front of everybody (at the half)," said Vasquez, who also had nine assists. "When he calls me out I got to respond. I don't take it personally."

Ryan Anderson added 23 points for the Hornets to help the Hornets bounce back from a blowout loss to Miami on Friday night and snap a two-game skid. Anthony Davis had 17 points and 13 rebounds for his rookies-leading 17th double-double, Brian Roberts scored 15 and Eric Gordon had 14.

Kryie Irving returned from a shoulder injury and led the Cavaliers with 31 points and six assists. Cleveland, which lost its eighth straight, was 1-7 in Irving's absence. Tristan Thompson, Wayne Ellington and Mareese Speights each scored 12 points for the Cavaliers and Shaun Livingston had 11.

The Hornets trailed 49-48 at the half but scored a season-high 36 points in the third quarter to take an 84-73 lead. Vasquez shot 6 for 6 in the quarter and Davis added 13 points, including three alley-oop dunks, all off assists by Vasquez.

"I'm just trying to get in (Vasquez's vision)," Davis said. "Every time he drives to the basket I'm just trying to get in a spot where he can find me. He tells me he's going to get it to me."

The Hornets scored 15 consecutive points early in the third quarter to take a 65-53 lead with 8:07 remaining. Vasquez and Davis combined to score 29 points in the quarter.

New Orleans increased the lead to 20 midway through the fourth quarter.

"We came out soft (in the second half)," Cavaliers coach Byron Scott said. "I did not think we came out with the same intensity that we should have. I do not know if they were just tired or whatever the case may be."

Irving appeared tentative in the first quarter, missing his only attempt and scoring two points on two free throws, although he had three assists.

The Cavaliers' guard took control in the second quarter, scoring 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting in the period. During one stretch, he scored 10 consecutive points to rally the Cavaliers from a 39-35 deficit with 3:49 remaining to a 45-43 lead at the 1:54 mark.

"I feel good," Irving said. "My body is holding up right now. I hit a few shots bit I just wanted to win."

New Orleans overcame a turnover-plagued first half by shooting 54.5 percent from the field. The Hornets committed eight turnovers in the opening period, leading to six Cleveland points, and finished with 12 for the half.

However, Hornets shooters took advantage of a passive Cavaliers defense, making 18 of 33 attempts on repeated open looks. Anderson, the Hornets' 3-point specialist, was 3 for 5 beyond the arc and finished the half with a team-high 15 points.

He finished the game 5 of 7 on 3s.

"When (the guards) penetrate they make it easy for me," Anderson said. "They take their defenders into the paint and take my defender, which leaves me open. When they're aggressive it's easy basketball and they were super aggressive for me."

NOTES: New Orleans went 4-3 on its seven-game homestand that included wins against playoff contenders Boston, Denver and Memphis. ... The Cavaliers entered leading the Eastern Conference in second-chance points, averaging 15 per game, but were held to six. ... The Hornets held a 49-29 advantage in scoring by reserves.

THE FACTS: On a night anticipating the return of Cleveland Cavaliers All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving, it was the combination of New Orleans Hornets' guard Greivis Vasquez and forward Anthony Davis which earned the headlines.

While Irving racked up a game-high 31 points, it wasn't enough to overcome an overwhelming second half by the Hornets (26-48), as New Orleans rolled to a 112-92 victory in front of 11,008 people at the New Orleans Arena.

Vasquez and Davis combined for 42 points (34 in the second half), including a series of alley-oops and clean cuts to basket, propelling the Hornets' to win the third and fourth quarters by a lopsided 64-43 total.

It was the Cavaliers' (22-50) eighth consecutive loss, but the first in the string with Irving on the court, who injured his left shoulder on March 10.

QUOTABLE: "I thought in the first half we got a little jolt from (Irving's return). But I thought it was much better in the first half than it was in the second half. I don't know if we were just tired or whatever the case may be, but they came out with a different mindset. They were aggressive and went after us and we were just kind of on our heels. We tried to pick it up at times, but you can't get down 20 and then decided to start to pick it up. It doesn't work often in this league."

THE STAT: Cleveland attempted just three free throws in the second half, illustrating the Cavs' lack of offensive aggression. Meanwhile the Hornets took 17 attempts from the line, making 12. Only Irving (14) and Marresse Speights (8) notched more than four second-half points for the Cavs.

TURNING POINT: Any momentum carried into the locker room by the Cavaliers' 49-48 halftime lead was extinguished and then suffocated six minutes into the third quarter. The Hornets raced out to a 16-2 run, which included three steals and three dunks, energizing the New Orleans Arena crowd. Following the run, the Cavs never closed the gap to fewer than seven points.

QUOTABLE II: "I took it personally and I'm tired of playing against elite point guards and getting my butt kicked just because I'm new at this starting point guard thing. I wasn't going to do anything short of trying to compete and help my team win. We were a little sloppy in the first half, so we got into each other's business a little bit because we wanted to get better. It showed up in the third quarter and then our energy got picked up and we were able to get the win."

HOT: Vasquez scorched the Cavaliers in the third quarter, connecting on all six of his field goal attempts finishing the period with 16 points, three assists and three steals. His 12-minute outburst highlighted a 25-point, nine-assist night, marking his welcome return to the Hornets' rotation after missing two of the past three games due to a left ankle sprain.

NOT: Cleveland only pulled in three offensive rebounds, allowing Davis to clean the defensive glass throughout the night. Meanwhile, the Hornets pulled down nine of their own misses, extending possessions and wrestling away momentum from the Cavs.

NOTABLE: Hornets' forward Ryan Anderson scored 15 points in his first 14 minutes on the floor, en route to a 23-point performance...Anthony Davis' 17 points and 13 rebounds earned him a double-double for the 17th time this season, the most among all rookies...Hornets' reserves outscored the Cavs' bench 49-29...Speights was an exception to Cleveland's futility, the Cavs backup forward scored 12 points and converted 6-of-9 field goal attempts...Hornets' guard Eric Gordon scored 14 points, but managed just two in the second half, missing all five field goal attempts.
