Jazz-Trail Blazers Preview

The Utah Jazz finally won back-to-back games this week despite losing a key bench contributor in the process.

Now they want to figure out how to get the job done outside Salt Lake City.

The playoff-hopeful Jazz will try to end their longest road losing streak in 31 seasons Friday night and drop the Portland Trail Blazers further back in the Western Conference race.

Having lost four straight and 12 of 15 heading into a pair of home games, Utah defeated Philadelphia 107-91 on Monday and Phoenix 103-88 on Wednesday.

The Jazz (36-36) had not posted consecutive victories since a 3-0 stretch encompassing the All-Star break Feb. 12-19. They were seventh in the West at that point but have since dropped to ninth, chasing the Los Angeles Lakers for the eighth and final playoff spot.

Wednesday's win, though, came at a price with Enes Kanter suffering a dislocated left shoulder. The second-year center, averaging 7.2 points and 4.3 rebounds, vowed he would return this season, but that's questionable.

"To be honest, the game was for the playoffs, but when (Kanter) went down I had to step up even more," said Al Jefferson, who matched Gordon Hayward for the team lead with 25 points. "We're going to fight for him to the end, make his injury worth something."

The Jazz open a stretch of six of seven in Salt Lake City on Saturday against Brooklyn, but first they'll try to notch their first road win since the All-Star break.

Utah's nine-game losing streak as the visitor is its longest since a 17-game slide Nov. 21, 1981-Feb. 6, 1982. However, the Jazz were competitive in last week's three-game trip through Texas, losing by an average of 6.4 points.

The Jazz had won five of six in Portland - and five in a row in this series - prior to a 105-99 loss Feb. 2 in the most recent meeting. Utah defeated the Trail Blazers 86-77 the previous night in Salt Lake City.

Portland (33-38) visits the Jazz again Monday following Saturday's game at Golden State, but first must try to recover from two blowout losses. The Blazers, who have lost 15 of 23 to fall to 11th in the West, fell 103-83 at Oklahoma City on Sunday and 111-93 to the Nets on Wednesday - their most lopsided home loss since Dec. 8.

"It was embarrassing," said Damian Lillard, who had five turnovers and shot 1 for 7 inside the 3-point arc. "I don't know any other way to say it."

Lillard's 49 points and 13 assists led Portland in the first two meetings with Utah, though he didn't have to face fellow point guard Mo Williams, who was recovering from thumb surgery.

Hayward (sprained shoulder) also was sidelined for both of those games. The third-year swingman is averaging a team-best 17.0 points with 16 3-pointers in 29 attempts since coach Tyrone Corbin re-inserted him into the starting lineup seven games ago.

LaMarcus Aldridge led the Blazers with 24 points Wednesday, but it's uncertain if there will be any lingering effects from a sprained right ankle he suffered in the first half. The All-Star forward had double-doubles in the two matchups versus Utah and has seven in his past nine games overall, averaging 24.0 points and 10.9 rebounds.

Utah rallies to beat Portland 105-95

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) Mo Williams was having such a hard time in the first half of Utah's game Friday night against the Trail Blazers that he didn't even play in the second quarter.

That made Williams mad. And that was good for the Jazz.

Williams responded by scoring 26 of his 28 points in the second half to lead the Jazz to a 105-95 victory over the Blazers.

"You get angry and instead of feeling sorry for yourself, you come out and be aggressive," he said.

Paul Millsap added 25 points and 10 rebounds as the Jazz snapped a nine-game losing streak on the road, their longest since they dropped 17 straight in the 1981-82 season.

The victory certainly wiped away Williams' frustration.

"Winning does that," he said. "It puts you in a good mood."

The Jazz (37-36) pulled even with the Los Angeles Lakers for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Blazers (33-39) dropped 3 1/2 games back with their third straight loss.

Portland, playing without forward LaMarcus Aldridge because of a sprained right ankle, got 24 points from rookie Damian Lillard. J.J. Hickson added 17 points and 14 rebounds.

The Jazz trailed 92-86 with 3:48 remaining when they took off on a closing 19-3 run, led by Williams with 12 points. Williams made a 12-footer and Randy Foye added a layup and free throw with 2:57 remaining to go ahead 93-92, and the Jazz led the rest of the way.

Al Jefferson had 22 points and eight rebounds in Utah's third straight win.

The Jazz were coming off a 103-88 victory at home over the Suns on Wednesday, but it was costly. Center Enes Kanter, averaging 7.2 points and 4.3 rebounds, dislocated his left shoulder. It is not known when he might return.

The Blazers took a 30-22 lead on Wesley Matthews' 3-pointer at the first-quarter buzzer. Victor Claver made a layup after a behind-the-back fake pass that put Portland ahead 34-28.

Derrick Favors' jumper pulled Utah within 40-38 and Jefferson's hook shot tied it with 4:41 left in the first half. But Portland responded with a 12-0 run, capped by Nicolas Batum's 3-pointer and Hickson's jumper to make it 52-40. Jefferson hit a jumper and the Jazz trailed 54-42 at the half.

"Everybody came out focused, especially in the second half. We didn't do a good job in the first but in the second half we came out with a different attitude," Millsap said.

Gordon Hayward made a pair of 3-pointers that pulled the Jazz within 64-61 midway through the third quarter. Williams added a pair of layups to give Utah a 65-64 lead.

Claver's dunk put the Blazers back ahead 72-70 before the quarter was over. It was back and forth until Eric Maynor made a 3-pointer that gave Portland an 85-80 lead with 7:55 left.

It was Utah's 14th comeback victory in a game in which the Jazz trailed by more than 10 points.

"If we lay everything we have on the floor and come up short, we can deal with that," Utah coach Tyrone Corbin said. "But we can't hold anything back at this point."

Aldridge was injured early in Wednesday night's 111-93 loss to the Brooklyn Nets. He left the game briefly, but returned to lead the Blazers with 24 points.

The two-time All-Star is averaging 21 points and 8.9 rebounds and the Blazers need him for any push toward playoffs. Two straight losses to Oklahoma City and the Nets were already a setback.

Rookie Meyers Leonard got his third career start in Aldridge's place and finished with 12 points.

The teams play again on Monday in Utah. Before that, Portland visits Golden State on Saturday while the Jazz host Brooklyn.

"We're still playing to win," Hickson said, despite Portland's dwindling playoff hopes. "We're still playing to make the playoffs. I know our window is definitely smaller at this point, but as long as we've got a chance, we're going to keep playing hard and we're going to play with integrity."

Notes: The teams had split their previous four meetings at the Rose Garden. ... With Batum's 3-pointer late in the first half, the Blazers surpassed their single-season record for 3s with 597. ... It was Lillard's 20th game this season with at least 20 points and seven assists. ... Hickson's double-double was his 39th this season.

THE FACTS: The Utah Jazz put together a late run that keyed a come-from-behind 105-95 victory over the Portland TRail Blazers Friday night at the Rose Garden.

Mo Williams scored 26 of his game-high 28 points in the second half for the Jazz (37-36), who moved into a tie with the Los Angeles Lakers for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Paul Millsap had 25 points and 10 rebounds and Al Jefferson contributed 22 points and eight boards for the winners, who closed the game by outscoring the Trail Blazers 25-6 down the stretch.

Damian Lillard scored 24 points and handed out seven assists and J.J. Hickson collected 17 points and 14 rebounds for the Blazers (33-39), who had six of their 16 turnovers in the fourth quarter.

QUOTABLE: "The guys really hung in there. The aggressive play we had on the defensive end down the stretch set the tone for us."

THE STAT: Portland committed six of its 16 turnovers in the fourth quarter, including five in eight possessions down the stretch.

TURNING POINT: The Blazers led 89-80 with 7:42 to play when the Jazz cranked the defensive pressure and turned the game around.

QUOTABLE II: "We played a good game until the turnovers caught up with us in the fourth quarter. We shot ourselves in the foot with turnovers."

HOT: Williams scored 10 points in the third quarter and 16 points in the fourth after totaling two points on 1-for-5 shooting in the first half.

NOT: After seizing a nine-point lead with 7:42 left, the Blazers finished the game making only 2 of their last 8 shots from the field.

GOOD MOVE: Wesley Matthews wasn't afraid to add another field-goal attempt to his stats, heaving a 35-foot jumper just ahead of the buzzer at the end of the first quarter. It went in, giving Portland a 30-22 lead.

QUOTABLE III: "Whether at home or on the road, we have to win from here on out if we want to make the playoffs."

NOTABLE: Utah scored 63 points in the second half ? 32 in the third quarter, 31 in the fourth ? after falling behind 52-42 at halftime. ...
