The Philadelphia 76ers realize it's probably too late to make any sort of realistic playoff push, but a quick glance at their schedule shows they'll have some great opportunities for wins over the next week.

That far-from-intimidating stretch begins with Friday night's visit to Cleveland, where the Cavaliers are still trying to figure out how they blew a late 10-point lead en route to their sixth straight loss.

Philadelphia has the NBA's fourth-worst record (18-37) since the beginning of December, with only a 10-6 start keeping its extremely slim playoff hopes alive. The 76ers (28-43) are seven games behind eighth-place Milwaukee with 11 to play.

That deficit could have been even greater had Philadelphia not responded after blowing all of an 18-point second quarter lead to the Bucks on Wednesday. The 76ers found themselves trailing 87-83 with 8:42 left, but scored the next 15 points en route to a 100-92 win.

"It's a great feeling," Thaddeus Young told the league's official website after scoring 14 points. "We were locked in and communicating. We're focused on winning."

Young was one of six 76ers to score at least 13, with Spencer Hawes' 15-point, 17-rebound performance the key to Philadelphia's 60-46 edge in the paint. Hawes has averaged 15.8 points,10.9 boards, 4.4 assists and 2.6 blocks in his last nine games.

Hawes believes there's plenty to be gained in the season's final three weeks - even if a playoff spot is essentially out of the question. There certainly seem to be some good chances to put together a winning streak in the next week, with two games against league-worst Charlotte up after slumping Cleveland.

"This season's been tough," Hawes said. "Going forward, we have a lot of pride. It's not just about next season, it's about finishing this season the right way."

That's what the injury-depleted Cavaliers (22-48) are trying to do as well, though they were hardly in an optimistic mood after Wednesday's 93-92 loss to Boston. Cleveland led 88-78 with just over five minutes remaining before a collapse that ended with Jeff Green's game-winning layup as time expired.

"We were looking at the clock, playing not to lose the game instead of to win the game," coach Byron Scott said. "You have to look to win. You can't hope the clock runs out and that's what we kind of did."

Scott's team, which is missing Kyrie Irving, Dion Waiters and Anderson Varejao, has fallen apart coming out of the locker room after halftime all month. Cleveland has outscored its opponents by an average of 0.6 points during the opening 24 minutes in its 12 games in March, but has a minus-9.5 differential after the break.

Hawes and Young might be able to have their way in the paint against a Cavaliers team that actually had Luke Walton logging late minutes at center on Wednesday. Opponents have outscored Cleveland by an average of 7.8 points in the paint this month.

The Cavs held a 103-80 rebounding edge in splitting two November meetings - both teams won at home - but Varejao was healthy then.

Cleveland might also want to figure out a way to limit Evan Turner's impact. The third-year forward has averaged 15.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 8.0 assists in the season series.

Turner scores 23, 76ers beats Cavaliers 97-87

CLEVELAND (AP) Road wins have been rare for the Philadelphia 76ers.

Victories of any kind have been even rarer lately for the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Evan Turner scored 23 points and the 76ers beat Cleveland 97-87 on Friday night, sending the Cavaliers to their season-high seventh straight loss.

Philadelphia, which is 2-16 on the road since Jan. 2, took control in the second half to keep its faint playoff hopes alive.

"Our guys are playing to win, which is great," coach Doug Collins said. "The spirit of the team is good, which I really like. This was a good win, and I'm very proud of our guys."

Philadelphia is ninth in the Eastern Conference, but sits 6 1/2 games behind Milwaukee in the race for the eighth and final playoff spot with 10 contests to play.

Turner, who had three points at halftime, scored 13 in the first seven minutes of the third quarter and knocked down several timely shots to help the Sixers build their lead.

"Any type of win is a great win," he said. "I got in a good rhythm coming right out of halftime. Any time when I'm attacking, I feel like I can be successful. The shots started falling, which was definitely cool."

The last few weeks have been anything but cool for the Cavaliers, who played again without their starting backcourt of Kyrie Irving (bruised shoulder) and Dion Waiters (sore knee). Cleveland, which has the third-worst record in the East, was officially eliminated from postseason contention Thursday when Milwaukee defeated the Los Angeles Lakers.

In addition to injuries, the Cavaliers' previous three losses were particularly frustrating. Cleveland squandered a 27-point lead in the second half and lost to Miami at home, was blown out by 38 points in Houston the following game for its worst loss of the season and let a 14-point lead with eight minutes to play get away at home and lost at the buzzer against Boston on Wednesday.

"It's going to test the kind of character we have in that locker room," coach Byron Scott said. "It's very simple. We're going to see if guys head south, north or wherever."

Jrue Holiday had 20 points and Thaddeus Young added 18 for the Sixers, who used a 20-2 run that began late in the second quarter and extended into the third to take command.

Spencer Hawes had 16 points and 11 rebounds for Philadelphia, but Turner, who played his college ball at Ohio State, was the biggest difference.

"Evan was terrific," Collins said. "I know he always gets keyed up to play here, but tonight was his best game in Cleveland. He had the ball in his hands a lot because we liked his matchup."

C.J. Miles scored 19 points for Cleveland, which had lost six in a row on two previous occasions. The Cavaliers trailed 77-66 after three quarters, but cut the margin to 78-74 early in the fourth. Turner hit a 3-pointer and a jumper to push the lead back to nine. Holiday added two 3-pointers and scored in the lane to keep the Sixers comfortably ahead.

Cleveland led 45-36 with 1:57 remaining in the second quarter, but the Sixers scored nine straight points to tie it. Tristan Thompson missed two free throws with 0.6 seconds remaining before halftime.

Tyler Zeller scored 14 points and had 10 rebounds for Cleveland. Thompson, Wayne Ellington and Shaun Livingston each added 10 points.

Irving and Waiters both took part in pregame shooting drills, but it's unclear whether either player will return this season. Irving has missed eight straight games while Waiters has been out the last four contests.

The Cavaliers have also been without center Anderson Varejao, who hasn't played since December after sustaining a split muscle in his leg. Varejao also developed a blood cut after having surgery.

"I can't worry about the guys who aren't playing," Scott said. "The biggest thing with us is we need six or seven guys to play really well. Tonight we didn't have six or seven guys playing really well."

NOTES: Former Sixers G Allen Iverson will return for his bobblehead Saturday night when the 76ers host Charlotte. Iverson, who led Philadelphia to the 2001 NBA finals, played for the Sixers from 1996-2007 and again in 2009-10. ... G Jeremy Pargo, who played 25 games for the Cavaliers this season, scored two points in six minutes for the Sixers. ... The Cavaliers play at New Orleans on Sunday. Cleveland hasn't won on the road since Feb. 26 when it defeated Chicago.

THE FACTS: Small forward Evan Turner scored 20 of his game-high 23 points in the second half as the Philadelphia 76ers pulled away for a 97-87 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Point guard Jrue Holiday added 20 points and six assists for the 76ers, while center Spencer Hawes collected 16 points, 11 rebounds and five assists. Cavaliers shooting guard C.J. Miles scored 19 points off the bench, while rookie center Tyler Zeller had 14 points and 10 rebounds. Cleveland squandered a 10-point lead in suffering its season-high seventh straight loss.

THE STAT: Turner exploded for 13 points in the first 6:34 of the third quarter, including a mid-range jumper that put Philadelphia in front for good at 49-47. The former Ohio State standout racked up 20 points and eight rebounds in the second half, allowing him to match his season best with a game-high 13 boards on the evening. "Evan was terrific," 76ers coach Doug Collins said. "I know he always gets keyed up to play here, but tonight was his best all-around game in Cleveland."

TURNING POINT: Philadelphia used a 20-2 run that bridged halftime -- fueled by seven points from Turner, five from Hawes, and four from power forward Thaddeus Young -- to seize control. Prior to the 76ers' surge, the Cavaliers held a 45-36 lead with 1:57 left in the first half. "We just got stagnant," Cleveland coach Byron Scott said. "The ball wasn't moving and just got stuck in one area, then it affected us on the other end. You have to give Philadelphia credit."

QUOTABLE II: "It's our seventh loss in a row, and we should have won about three of those. It all comes down to the defensive end and our lack of communication. We couldn't get stops and we didn't rotate. It's definitely frustrating."

HOT: The 76ers are 6-4 since March 16, pulling them within 6 1/2 games of Milwaukee in the race for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with 10 contests to play. ... Holiday scored 12 points in the fourth quarter and had 16 in the second half. ... Philadelphia shooting guard Damien Wilkins recorded a season-high tying six assists. ... Cavaliers power forward Luke Walton dished out a game-high seven assists in just 21 minutes. He also had five points and seven boards. ... Miles is averaging 12.5 points and shooting .422 on 3-pointers over his last 19 games.

NOT: The Cavaliers have the third-worst record in the NBA at 22-49, along with the league's third-worst home mark at 13-23. ... Philadelphia's bench was 5-of-18 from the floor and was outscored by Cleveland's substitutes 37-13. ... The Cavaliers (and Scott) are 62-157 since LeBron James left the franchise in July 2010. ... Thompson missed five of his seven free throw attempts, dropping his season percentage to .619. ... QUOTABLE III: "Everyone is frustrated because this was definitely a winnable game. When we're playing the right way, it seems too easy and we tend to ease up. We have to do a better job sticking with what we did that got us the lead."

GOOD MOVE: Collins shrewdly used Turner at point guard, shooting guard and small forward -- taking advantage of his versatility and his strong, 6-foot-7, 220-pound frame against every Cavaliers player who tried to defend him. "We had the ball in his hands a lot tonight because we liked his matchups," Collins said. In addition to making 9-of-17 field goals, including two 3-pointers, Turner had four assists with one turnover in 38 strong minutes.

BAD MOVE: Cleveland small forward Alonzo Gee, who has been disappointing since signing a multi-year contract last summer, was given his 71st straight start by Scott. Gee was ineffective defensively all night, while only scoring six points with two rebounds and one assist. On the season, the fourth-year pro is shooting .406 from the field and .301 beyond the arc. Gee also is only averaging 15.9 points and 2.7 assists per 48 minutes in 2012-2013.

NOTABLE: The Cavaliers played without their top three scorers in All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving (left shoulder sprain), shooting guard Dion Waiters (left knee soreness), and center Anderson Varejao (season-ending right knee surgery). Irving and Waiters both worked out on the court before the game, raising hopes they could return in early April. "I guess that's a good sign, but I have no official update," Scott said. ... Irving has missed eight straight games, while Waiters sat out his fourth in a row. ... The 76ers' inactives were shooting guard Jason Richardson (season-ending left knee surgery) and center Andrew Bynum (season-ending knee surgery). ... Wilkins -- the son of former Cleveland shooting guard Gerald Wilkins -- attended eighth grade at Richfield Revere Middle School in Northeast Ohio.
