Rockets-Grizzlies Preview

While the Memphis Grizzlies' success mainly has been the result of stellar defense, the Houston Rockets' explosive offense is a major reason they're in position to make their first playoff appearance in four seasons.

The Grizzlies, though, haven't been playing up to their standards on the defensive end lately, and they'll look to get back on track by winning a fifth straight home meeting with the Rockets on Friday night.

Memphis (47-24) sits in fifth place in the Western Conference, one game behind Denver for home-court advantage in the first round of the postseason.

The Grizzlies have been struggling, dropping to 3-5 in their last eight after falling behind by as many as 30 points in a 108-101 loss at New York on Wednesday.

While Memphis ranks near the top of the league giving up an average of 90.0 points, it has allowed 107.0 per game over the last three.

"Obviously, it was a bad start, getting all the way down by 30 points," coach Lionel Hollins said. "We had to find a lineup that could both guard and score, but we just didn't have any margin for error."

There were a couple of bright spots, though, as Mike Conley scored 26 points and is averaging 21.0 over his last five. Jerryd Bayless continued his hot stretch off the bench by scoring 24 points, and he's averaging 19.9 over his last seven - more than double his season average of 8.4.

Marc Gasol also returned from a two-game absence due to an abdominal tear and said he plans to play through the injury as long as he can.

"If I can play, I will play," said Gasol, who scored 13 points. "That's the way it's always been with me and hopefully that's how it's always going to be."

None of the Grizzlies could prevent them from allowing a season-worst point total in a 121-96 loss to Houston in the most recent meeting Dec. 22. James Harden finished with 31 points while Jeremy Lin added 15 and 11 assists for the Rockets (39-32).

That type of offensive display has been common for the Rockets, who average 106.1 points - one-tenth behind league leader Oklahoma City.

Houston is seventh in the West, one game behind sixth-place Golden State and in position to qualify for its first postseason since 2008-09. It had a three-game winning streak snapped with Wednesday's 100-91 loss to Indiana that concluded a 5-2 homestand.

"One loss is one loss but if we learn from it, it can be a good thing for us," Lin said. "The key is not to compound one loss with another one."

The Rockets shot 38.6 percent overall and were behind by 16 points at the end of the first quarter. They've been held to fewer than 100 points in two consecutive games for the first time since Jan. 18-19.

"I think the starters should take some ownership and not allow teams to get out to leads like that because it is pretty much impossible to play back from that much down when you play a (good) team," said Chandler Parsons, who shot 5 of 14 and scored 11 points.

Houston has won 11 of 15 meetings with the Grizzlies, but the defeats have come in its last four visits to Memphis.

The Grizzlies held Harden to 4-of-18 shooting in a 93-85 victory Nov. 9.

Randolph, Gasol lead Grizzlies by Rockets, 103-94

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) Zach Randolph and the Memphis Grizzlies only needed a short trip home to return to their style of play.

Randolph and Marc Gasol scored 21 points apiece and the Grizzlies snapped a two-game losing streak with a 103-94 victory over the Houston Rockets on Friday night.

For Randolph, who also grabbed 12 rebounds, it was a bit of redemption after the Grizzlies' loss in New York on Wednesday when he was limited to three points, part of why Randolph averaged only 10.5 points and 7.8 rebounds in the previous four games

"Man, it's an 82-game season," Randolph said when asked about the slump. "Even MJ (Michael Jordan) had bad games. It's just part of it."

Tony Allen scored 16 points, connecting on 8 of 12 shots, and Mike Conley finished with 15 points and 10 assists for Memphis. Reserve Jerryd Bayless added 14 points and Tayshaun Prince finished with 10.

Allen also had a strong defensive effort in limiting Rockets' star James Harden, who came into the game fifth in the league in scoring with a 26.2 average, to seven points on 3-of-9 shooting.

"I don't want to take all the credit," Allen said. "Obviously, it's what I do. I'm a lock-down defender. I got to credit the bigs. They were helping me in the pick-and-rolls. Mike Conley and Tay (Prince) were in help when he was trying to drive, and for the most part, we tried to keep him off the line. . My teammates were there for me in the right moments, and we were able to contain him to single digits."

Chandler Parsons and Donatas Motiejunas led the Rockets with 16 points apiece, despite not playing in the fourth quarter as Houston coach Kevin McHale used his reserves to try to put more pressure on the Grizzlies defensively. Carlos Delfino had 15 points and James Anderson added 10 for Houston, which dropped its second straight game.

"We made more mistakes defensively than we have been doing," McHale said. "Guys were trying to be aggressive on a couple of things, and we got really distorted defensively. We made too many mistakes defensively, especially early."

The victory came after Memphis had lost two straight on the road, at Washington and New York, and the team left immediately after the game for a Saturday night game at Minnesota. The Grizzlies have won 11 straight at home.

"It's always good to be able to be back home and win, especially after we lost a couple of games on the road," Gasol said. "... Offensively, I think we did a good job 70 percent of the game, 30 percent we didn't do so good, but we got the win, and it was good to be home, even for a day."

Gasol and Randolph led Memphis' inside dominance with the Grizzlies holding a 56-46 advantage in the paint and outrebounding the Rockets, 42-35.

Memphis opened the second half with a 19-10 spurt to take an 80-63 lead, its biggest of the game. Memphis turned up the defense from the start of the half after Allen got a steal on the Rockets' opening possession and broke free for a dunk, and the first double-digit lead of the game.

Gasol had eight points in the quarter as Memphis outscored Houston 23-16 in taking an 84-69 advantage into the fourth quarter. Memphis dictated the pace, and its defensive intensity was leading to points.

"The Grizzlies took entire control of the tempo," Rockets guard Jeremy Lin said. "When they played us earlier in the season, we had control of the tempo. We took away their first options on offense. However, they still had open cutters and had open 3-point shots."

In the fourth, it was the Rockets' reserves who were applying the defensive pressure, leading to an 8-2 rally, fueled by four Memphis turnovers. That cut Houston's deficit to single-digits. Anderson and Delfino both had four points in the push.

But Memphis answered quickly, extending its lead as Randolph began working inside, scoring six straight points and the Grizzlies regained the momentum.

Memphis maintained the double-digit advantage until Anderson's jumper in the closing seconds provided the final score.

"A nine-point, 10-point lead with a team like Houston is nothing," Memphis coach Lionel Hollins said of playing his starters until the end. "They hit three 3s, and they're back in the game.

"I wasn't taking them out until I was sure we had the win. . I never want to take guys out and lose a game because I took them out too early. I would rather take them out too late."

Both teams shot well early. Memphis was at 60 percent after the first quarter, while the Rockets were at 55 percent, including connecting on 5 of 8 outside the arc.

Those trends continued through the half as Memphis shot 62 percent to take a 61-53 lead into the break.

The Rockets dropped a bit on field goal percentage, but still connected on 7 of 16 from long range.

Randolph, putting the slump behind him early, already had 15 points at the half, matched by 15 from Parsons.

Memphis would end the night shooting 51 percent, while Houston connected on 42 percent.

"The more we play together, and the more we hang our hats on the defensive end and pound it inside, that's who we are," Allen said. "That's how we got the notoriety."

NOTES: Friday's game at Memphis was the Rockets' only road contest in a 10-game stretch. Houston finished 5-2 in its previous seven games, all at home. The Rockets play their next two back at the Toyota Center against the Clippers and the Magic. ... The Rockets have lost five straight in Memphis. ... THE FACTS: The Memphis Grizzlies finally got All-Star forward Zach Randolph back on track. Going to their big man early and often, Randolph scored 11 of his 21 points in the opening quarter as the Grizzlies snapped their two-game slide with a 103-94 win over the Houston Rockets in front of a sellout crowd of 18.119 at FedExForum Friday night. Randolph also had a game-high 12 rebounds.

THE STAT: Randolph topped the 20-point mark for the first time since scoring 22 against Dallas on Feb. 22. It was just his second 20-point performance since the All-Star break. Randolph had 10 such performances before the All-Star break.

TURNING POINT: The Grizzlies led just 48-47 with just under four minutes remaining in the first half before a tip-in by Randolph ignited a 13-6 run to end the half, giving the Grizzlies a 61-53 lead. From there, the Rockets never got closer than eight points as the Grizzlies led by as many as 17.

HOT: The Rockets has no answer for the Grizzlies offense as all five starters, along with backup guard Jerryd Bayless, scored in double figures. Center Marc Gasol picked up where Randolph left off in the second half, scoring 12 of his 21 points, while Tony Allen had 16 and Mike Conley 15. The Grizzlies shot 50.6 percent from the floor, scoring 56 points in the paint. They are now 14-1 when shooting 50 percent or better.

NOT: It was an off-night for the Houston backcourt of James Harden and Jeremy Lin. Harden was just 3-for-9 from the floor for seven points, while Lin was 3-for-9 for eight points. For Harden, it was just his second single-digit game of the season, the other coming when he had six against Utah on Nov. 19. Harden entered the game fifth in the NBA with a 26.2 average.

NOTABLE: Houston forwards Donatas Motiejunas and Chandler Parsons were responsible for keeping the Rockets close in the first half. Both players led the Rockets with 16 points with Chandler going 3-for-5 form 3-point range and Motiejunas making 2-for-3. ... The Grizzlies announced their third consecutive sellout crowd. They last time they had three straight packed houses was during the 2004-05 season, which were the first three games ever played in FedExForum. The Grizzlies are now 5-0 this season in front of home sellout crowds. ... The Grizzlies have won 11 in a row at home, tying the second-longest home winning streak in franchise history. ... The Rockets entered the game second in the league in scoring at 106.1 ppg.
