Kings-Warriors Preview

The Golden State Warriors are making a strong playoff push, but with just one postseason appearance since 1994, they're not about to overlook any opponent. Especially not one that's defeated them twice this season - and nearly did a third time.

Golden State goes for its fourth consecutive home win over the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday night when these Northern California rivals close out their season series.

Winners of six of eight, the Warriors (41-31) are on the verge of their first winning season since 2007-08. They've also moved one step closer to their first playoff berth since 2007, currently in sixth place in the Western Conference, 5 1/2 games ahead of ninth-place Utah.

"Yeah, you have to treat every game like it's a big game," said Klay Thompson, who hit six 3-pointers and scored 22 in Monday's 109-103 win over the Los Angeles Lakers. "You've got the Kings coming in here, another tough California team right up the street."

The Warriors, 24-10 at Oracle Arena, have to feel good about playing a Kings team sporting a league-worst 6-30 road record, but hosting Sacramento (25-46) is no guaranteed 'W.' Golden State needed a go-ahead 3-pointer by Thompson with 7.5 seconds left to hold off the visiting Kings 87-83 on March 6.

The Warriors lost the first two meetings in Sacramento, 94-92 on Nov. 5 and 131-127 on Dec. 19.

Golden State, though, has to like its chances if Curry can continue his recent surge. Questionable against the Lakers after spraining his twice surgically repaired ankle in Saturday's win over Washington, Curry finished with 25 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds.

He's made 24 of 47 3-point attempts over the last five games while averaging 28.6 points and 7.0 assists.

"He's proven," coach Mark Jackson said. "(His injuries are) not a concern to me and it's not a concern to this franchise. ... We know just how special a player and person that he is and we are fortunate to have him."

Kings coach Keith Smart, the Warriors' previous coach, knows how true that is - and how much Curry could hurt his struggling team.

Sacramento is among the league's best with 108.9 points per game since Feb. 9, but it is yielding a league-worst 109.0 during that 8-13 stretch.

"We couldn't contain the ball - we couldn't keep the ball out of the paint in operating areas," Smart said after Sunday's 117-103 loss to Philadelphia. "Once you get guys who are known shooters hot in a building, it's going to be hard to cool those guys (down)."

The Warriors are 49 for 100 from long range over the last five games, led by Curry and Thompson (19 for 34).

Sacramento has done a relatively good job holding Curry in check this season - he's averaging 19.0 points on 34.0 percent shooting - but he's also hit 11 of 23 3s.

The Warriors' backcourt needs to keep an eye on point guard Isaiah Thomas, who's 20 for 49 from long range with a team-best 19.4 points per game over the last eight contests.

Kings center DeMarcus Cousins is averaging a team-best 17.3 points with 8.7 rebounds in this season series.

Warriors forward David Lee, the NBA leader with 48 double-doubles, has 66 points and 24 boards in those matchups - both team highs.

The Kings can win the season series for the first time in a decade and even the all-time series at 185.

Kings beat Warriors 105-98 to take season series

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) If the Golden State Warriors can hold on and make the playoffs, they'll be thankful the Sacramento Kings are not standing in their way.

Isaiah Thomas had 31 points and seven assists, DeMarcus Cousins scored 14 points and the Kings put another dent in Golden State's playoff chase by beating the Warriors 105-98 on Wednesday night.

Sacramento, which entered the game an NBA-worst 6-30 on the road, won the season series 3-1.

"I'm just glad we don't have to face them in a seven-game series right now," Warriors coach Mark Jackson said.

Marcus Thornton added 13 points off the bench, and Tyreke Evans overcame a stomach ailment to score 12 points as Sacramento harassed Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson all night. The Warriors backcourt tandem combined to shoot 6 of 31 from the field.

Sacramento earned its first road win against a team with a winning record all season. The only other Western Conference team the Kings had beaten on the road was Portland - all the way back on Dec. 8.

Of course, when the Kings and Warriors meet, recent history often means little.

"It's like a little miniseries playoff," said Kings coach Keith Smart, the former Warriors head coach and longtime assistant under Don Nelson.

Whatever the reason, Sacramento has dominated the Warriors this season.

David Lee had 20 points and 10 rebounds, and Curry finished with 17 points and 12 assists on a difficult shooting night for the Warriors backcourt. Golden State (41-32) missed a big opportunity to build its lead on seventh-place Houston (39-32), which remains a game back after losing 100-91 to Indiana.

"They basically have owned us throughout the season," said Warriors center Andrew Bogut, who had 12 points and nine rebounds.

While playoff positioning is paramount for the Warriors, Sacramento sure seemed more energized for the latest - and perhaps last - edition of the Northern California rivalry. The NBA is deciding between a bid from a group that wants to buy and relocate the Kings to Seattle and a counteroffer from a Sacramento group. A decision is expected by mid-April.

After going down 13 points at the start of the fourth quarter, Golden State tried to rally late behind a 26th straight sellout crowd announced at 19,596.

Harrison Barnes stole Patrick Patterson's pass and finished a layup on the other end to slice Sacramento's lead to 93-88 with a little more than 3 minutes to play. The Warriors just had no answer for the Kings on defense, often mixing up assignments - or forgetting them altogether.

Thomas answered with a step-back 3-pointer off a screen, hitting the shot over Bogut and reserve Kent Bazemore. Both players went underneath and left Thomas open.

"There's no excuse for it, especially at this point in the season," Bogut said. "No disrespect to Sacramento, but we're playing for more than April 17."

Jarrett Jack came back with a running jump shot to bring the Warriors within six. They forced a stop before Curry missed a runner that sent fans heading for the exits. Curry finished 5 for 18 from the floor, while Thompson was 1 for 13.

Both teams shot 45.6 percent.

Toney Douglas' free throws put the Kings ahead by eight with 32 seconds left, and then Sacramento got sloppy. Curry made a layup, then stole the inbounds pass from Patterson for another layup to trim the Kings' lead to 100-96 with 20 seconds remaining before Sacramento sealed the game on free throws.

"I think it's deeper than (matchups)," said Thomas, who shot 10 of 18. "The game before tonight we didn't really play too well. They killed us in everything, so I don't think it's just the matchups. We just came out and executed."

Most of the game followed the familiar Kings-Warriors script.

Offensive outbursts led to defensive droughts. Dazzling dunks morphed into poor finishes. And any time an offense flowed for a long stretch, eventually the rhythm shattered.

John Salmons started the silliness with a shot from beyond the arc while getting fouled by Barnes on the game's first play. The four-point play helped the Kings go ahead 12-2 before they hit their first rut.

The Warriors received contributions from all over during a 31-12 run that lasted midway through the second quarter. Lee and Bogut highlighted the spurt with a series of uncontested dunks off pick-and-rolls, often making an extra pass to the other inside to give Golden State a 33-24 lead.

There were 10 lead changes and five ties in the first half alone. The Kings led 47-44 at the break.

Sacramento surged ahead 64-52 in the third quarter after a 13-0 run sparked by Thomas, who scored 17 points in the third quarter, including going 5 of 6 from beyond the arc. The undersized point guard punctuated the period with a 3-pointer from the top of the arc in the face of Curry that put the Kings up 77-66.

If this really was the last time these teams meet as Northern California neighbors, the margin couldn't be closer. The series is tied 185-185.

NOTES: Boston Celtics great Bill Russell, who attended Oakland's McClymonds High School and the University of San Francisco, sat in a courtside seat next to Warriors executive board member Jerry West and team owner Joe Lacob in the first half. ... Curry made his 600th and 601st career 3-pointer.

THE FACTS: Isaiah Thomas connected on a career-high seven 3-pointers en route to a game-high 31 points as the Sacramento Kings shocked the Golden State Warriors 105-98 Wednesday night.

The Kings held on down the stretch for their first road victory this season against an opponent with a winning record. Sacramento came in a league-worst 6-30 away from Sleep Train Arena.

Sacramento took a season series from Golden State for the first time in a decade with three wins in four games this season, including what may have been the final installment in the clubs' Northern California rivalry, if the Kings end up moving to Seattle.

David Lee led the Warriors with 20 points and 10 rebounds, but Golden State's starting backcourt of Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson combined on a 6-for-31 shooting night.

QUOTABLE: "Isaiah Thomas represented his name very well tonight. He was someone who had to play well for us."

THE STAT: Golden State (41-32), which led by nine points early in the second quarter, missed a golden opportunity to open its advantage in the race to secure the No. 6 seed in the Western Conference playoffs. Houston (39-32) remained just a game behind despite losing to Indiana earlier Wednesday, while the Lakers (37-35) and Utah (36-36) pulled closer.

TURNING POINT: Smart's decision to use back-up guard Toney Douglas down the stretch seemed to invite second-guessing when the veteran -- acquired from Houston along with Cole Aldrich and Patrick Patterson on Feb. 20 -- committed turnovers on back-to-back possessions as the Kings tried to nurse their fourth-quarter lead.

But Smart stuck with Douglas, who bodied up Curry with Sacramento's lead down to six points and forced a highly contested 12-foot runner with 59.9 seconds left. Curry missed, and Tyreke Evans crossed out Thompson on the ensuing Kings possession before dropping a 20-foot pull-up jumper for a 98-90 lead with 42.1 seconds remaining, securing the win.

QUOTABLE II: "We talked about it (pre-game): We are not good enough to show up and (expect to) win ballgames. That's not who we are, and we will not be successful with that approach. . . . If we gave the same energy and effort that we did against the Lakers (on Monday), we win this ballgame. We did not."

HOT: Thomas simply scorched the Warriors in the third quarter, scoring 17 points with five 3-pointers as the Warriors found themselves unable to stop the 5-foot-9 playmaker. Thomas opened the period with a fast-break layup, and finished it with back-to-back treys. He also had a team-high seven assists on the night.

NOT: Thompson's performance couldn't have been much poorer. Plagued by foul trouble from the outset, Thompson missed his final 11 shots and finished with more personals (five) than points (four). Golden State is 0-5 this season when Thompson scores fewer than seven points.

QUOTABLE III: "One thing with Klay, he was holding his head down a little bit. He's a shooter. Those are shots I'll take and I don't care what anybody says. That was not the reason we lost this game."

GOOD MOVE: Smart finally brought back Thomas to run the offense after Douglas' consecutive cough-ups, and Thomas rewarded the move by draining his final 3-pointer with 2:43 left.

BAD MOVE: Thompson was clearly ice cold from outside, but he kept banging away from outside (1-for-8) rather than attempting to get himself on track with an up-fake and drive or two.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Warriors center Andrew Bogut tied his season high with 12 points, and added nine rebounds and four blocks. Bogut had 10 points by halftime, with six of those coming during a 2:17 stretch of the second quarter in which he put down a pair of dunks. Those jams might have bred a little bit of overconfidence, however, as Bogut was blocked by the rim on an alley oop try just before the half.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Oakland product Bill Russell, who coached the Kings for 58 games after his Hall of Fame playing career, was sitting courtside with fellow Hall of Famer Jerry West, a member of the Warriors' executive board. Players from both teams joined in the ovation for Russell when he was shown on the scoreboard during a second-quarter timeout.

NOTABLE: Evans, a game-time decision due to a stomach ailment, played 34 minutes and provided 12 points with five assists. . . . The Kings and Warriors have met 370 times in their history. The all-time series is now perfectly balanced at 185-185. . . . Kings forward John Salmons started the game with a four-point play, but had only five points the rest of the way. He did contribute six rebounds and five assists. . . . Lee's league-leading 27th game this season with at least 20 points and 10 rebounds came in his 200th career appearance as a Warrior. Golden State is now 22-5 in those contests. The Warriors gave fans a bobblehead allegedly cast in Lee's likeness. . . . Golden State's 68 points in the paint are the most allowed by Sacramento this season. . . . The Kings turned 16 offensive rebounds into 21 second-chance points against a Warriors team that came into the game ranked second in the league in defensive rebounding percentage at 74.9. . . . Carl Landry and Jarrett Jack each had 16 points off the bench for the Warriors.
