With their sights set squarely on claiming the Western Conference's final playoff spot, the Utah Jazz have little margin for error as the season winds down. They've pushed their luck in recent weeks with poor play, but hope to take advantage of a home-heavy schedule to end year after putting the brakes on a losing streak.

The Phoenix Suns are still stuck in yet another skid - one that may not end anytime soon without improvements on the defensive end.

Utah looks to build on an encouraging victory and send the Suns to a fourth straight loss on Wednesday night.

A 5-12 record since the All-Star break has caused Utah (35-36) to fall one-game back of the Los Angeles Lakers in the race for eighth place. But while the Lakers enter their game Wednesday at Minnesota mired in a three-game losing streak, Utah put an end to its own four-game slide with a 107-91 home win over Philadelphia on Monday.

Despite squandering a lead of five games over Los Angeles at the break, the Jazz's confidence hasn't necessarily been shaken - especially considering seven of their final 11 games are in Salt Lake City. Utah owns a 25-9 home record.

"We can definitely do it," Hayward said of Utah making the playoffs for the second straight year and sixth time in seven seasons. "We've beaten some of the best teams in the league. I know we can do it. It's just a matter of us going out there, playing as a team, helping each other defensively and making a lot of plays."

Hayward has been making plays for the Jazz over the last week. After coming off the bench for the last four months, Hayward is averaging 15.7 points in starting the last six. He's burying 56.5 percent of his 3-point attempts (13 of 23), compared to a 41.6 percent season average

"I think it's big for us," Randy Foye said of Hayward in a starting role. "I've been out there the whole year, not by myself, but Mo (Williams) has (been hurt) and (Hayward) has been playing with the second unit. With those guys out there, everyone's a threat and it's pick your poison for opponents."

The Suns (23-48) have lost three straight - their eighth skid of at least three games this season - as well as nine of 11. They're ranked in the bottom third for the season in scoring defense at 100.6 points per game, but have been particularly bad over the last 10, yielding an average of 106.2 points on 48.1 percent shooting.

Phoenix, which is 7-26 on the road, did chip away at a 16-point deficit in the third quarter of Sunday's home game against Brooklyn, but wound up taking a 102-100 loss.

"We are of course disappointed because we lost," interim coach Lindsey Hunter said. "But if we can have that type of effort every night we will take it. ... That is what we have to do every single night, every single practice, we have to fight."

The Jazz won two of the three previous meetings this year, though Jared Dudley provided a hot hand for Phoenix, averaging 18.0 points on 68.8 percent shooting.

Al Jefferson is averaging 20.7 points and 11.0 rebounds for the Jazz in the three meetings.

Jefferson, Hayward lift Jazz past Suns 103-88

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) The Utah Jazz were a hurting bunch entering Wednesday night's game against the Phoenix Suns. Then they lost second-year big man Enes Kanter early to a dislocated shoulder.

The illness and injuries only seemed to be a rallying force, however, as they cruised to a 103-88 victory to stay within a game of the eighth-place Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference playoff battle.

Al Jefferson and Gordon Hayward scored 25 points to lead Utah (36-36), which used a 10-0 run to open the fourth quarter and led by as many as 19 while outscoring Phoenix 56-32 in the paint.

"To be honest, the game was for the playoffs, but when (Kanter) went down I had to step up even more," said Jefferson, still nursing a busted lip from a shot to the mouth in Monday's win. "We're going to fight for him to the end, make his injury worth something."

Jefferson wasn't the only one, though he finished 12 of 23 with nine rebounds, two blocks and two steals.

Derrick Favors grabbed 13 rebounds in 24 minutes for the Jazz, who held a 46-36 edge on the boards.

The Suns had pulled within 75-71 going into the fourth thanks to Wesley Johnson's 10-point third quarter, including a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Utah held the Suns to 17 points in the fourth on 35 percent shooting, while outrebounding Phoenix 17-7 to close out the game.

Johnson had a season-high 22 points and Luis Scola 20 to lead the Suns, who dropped their fourth straight.

With Phoenix out of the playoff picture, the Suns chose to rest leading scorer Goran Dragic, who was coming off a season-high 31-point, 12-assist effort in a 102-100 loss to Brooklyn on Sunday.

While the Suns left with another loss, Kanter departed the arena with a huge smile on his face despite the sling on his shoulder.

"Oh, I'll come back this year," Kanter vowed. "Yeah, I'll come back."

The injury was enough to make teammates cringe as they watched the 6-foot-11, 248-pound Kanter leave the court in obvious pain with 10:23 left in the second quarter after Suns' 7-2, 265-pound center Hamed Haddadi fell on him as they battled over a loose ball.

Kanter was biting hard into his mouthpiece, supporting his left arm and stopped courtside, thinking about trying to pop the joint back into place. Team trainer Gary Briggs led him to the locker room shortly thereafter.

"I tried, but I couldn't' do it," Kanter said.

It was enough for Randy Foye to feel sick to his stomach. Then again, he already was from an illness that kept him up all night and in the bathroom, and unable to go through Wednesday's short morning workout.

"It was pretty gross," Foye said of Kanter's injury. "But he's a tough kid. I hope he has a speedy recovery."

Jefferson, who had 27 points combined the previous two games, said he's seen similar injuries that have kept players out two to four weeks. The Jazz have 10 games remaining over the next three weeks.

Kanter is averaging 7.3 points and 4.4 rebounds for Utah while playing with the second unit, but led the Jazz in scoring in Dallas last week with 17 points.

"Guys are beat up," said Jazz forward Marvin Williams, who played through right heel bursitis "Paul (Millsap) is a little sick, Randy's been sick, my heel's a little beat up, but ... we'll fight through it."

It helped that they didn't have to face Dragic.

"We're just kind of shutting him down," Suns interim coach Lindsey Hunter said before the game. "He's been playing a whole lot of minutes and we're going to give him a break periodically through these last couple of games. If you watched him come out of games, he's looked like he's been in a brawl."

The Suns have long been out of the playoff race, but they do have a vested interest in seeing the Jazz finish ahead of the Lakers for the eighth seed. If the Lakers miss the playoffs, the Suns get the Lakers' draft pick that is not lottery protected as part of the Steve Nash deal.

Utah opened the fourth just as it started the game, with hot shooting and a take-it-to-them attitude.

Jefferson scored on a layup, converted a three-point play and hit a midrange jumper and Alec Burks added a 3-pointer as the Jazz stretched their lead to 85-71 with 8:58 left.

"Little plays are what win you basketball games," said Williams, who kept a rebound alive during Utah's 19-5 fourth-quarter run. "When you can sneak in there and get another offensive possession or maybe dive on the ground for loose ball, those are things that will put you over the top."

NOTES: The Jazz on Wednesday signed former Marquette standout Jerel McNeal to a 10-day contract from the D-League's Bakersfield Jam. The 6-3 guard finished his college career as Marquette's all-time leader in scoring, steals and games played, but went undrafted in 2009. ... Former Jazz C Mehmet Okur attended Wednesday's game. ... Marshall made his first career start and opened 0 for 3 with a pair of first-half turnovers, but had nine assists in the first half. He finished with seven points and 13 assists. ... The Jazz scored a season-high 34 points in the first quarter.

THE FACTS: The Utah Jazz continued their postseason push on Wednesday night by doing something they hadn't in more than a month: winning back-to-back games.

Al Jefferson and Gordon Hayward each had 25 points as the Jazz defeated the Phoenix Suns 103-88. Utah got back to .500 (36-36) with the victory and it's the first time it has won back-to-back games since Feb. 13-19. The Jazz remained one game behind the Los Angeles Lakers for eighth place in the Western Conference.

Mo Williams had 10 assists to go along with eight points, and Derrick Favors had 13 rebounds to go along with nine points for Utah.

The Suns, playing without leading scorer and starting point guard Goran Dragic, hung with the Jazz for the first three quarters. Wesley Johnson scored a season-high 22 points, and Kendall Marshall, playing in place of Dragic, dished a career-high 13 assists.

QUOTABLE: "I thought we relaxed a little too much. Got some offensive rebounds for kick-out 3s, some easy buckets in transition, but in the start of the third I thought we did a good job of locking down defensively and really making them make tough shots and then we did a good job executing our offense on the other end."

THE STAT: With Marcin Gortat out and Jermaine O'Neal limited to 16 minutes of playing time because of a calf strain, the Jazz destroyed the undermanned Suns near the basket. Utah recorded 56 points in the paint, and shot 51.8 percent thanks to having so many close looks at the hoop. Phoenix, by comparison, had just 32 points in the paint.

TURNING POINT: The Jazz opened the fourth quarter with some urgency and finally put the short-handed Suns away. Utah had a 17-2 run to start the fourth, stretching what was a four-point lead to a 92-73 advantage. The Jazz scored the fourth quarter's first 10 points with Jefferson doing most of the damage. He started the spurt with a layup, converted a three-point play and had a jumper. Alec Burks added a 3-pointer off of an assist from Hayward, Favors contributed a slam dunk and Mo Williams had a three-point play of his own during the game-clinching run.

HOT: The Jazz scored on their first six possessions and made their first six shots. They went on to score a season-high 34 first-quarter points. Randy Foye, who missed shootaround because of "gastric distress," continued his sizzling shooting. He shot 5-for-6, including 2-for-2 from 3-point range, and scored 12 points. Foye is 18-for-29, including 10-for-17 from 3-point range, in his last four games. Utah's Paul Millsap shot 6-for-9 and scored 12 points. Phoenix's backup point guards fared well in their extended playing time. Marshall didn't shoot well (2-for-7) but efficiently ran the offense until getting tired near the end of the game while playing a career-high 34 minutes. Diante Garrett shot 4-for-5 and had eight points while spelling Marshall.

NOT: Luis Scola had 20 points and got off to a fast start against the Jazz. Scola, however, fizzled in the second half, shooting 1-for-9. O'Neal was hobbled by his calf strain, and struggled while shooting 1-for-7. For the Jazz, Marvin Williams and Burks each shot 2-for-6.

GOOD MOVE: The Jazz were mostly brilliant on offense against Phoenix, but what really changed the game's momentum was their increased pressure and intensity on defense in the fourth quarter. Utah held Phoenix to one basket in the first five minutes of the fourth while putting their 17-2 run together. The Jazz challenged shots, got deflections and clogged passing lanes. Utah held Phoenix to six baskets and 35.3 percent shooting in the fourth quarter.

BAD MOVE: A win is a win, but the Jazz made the game more difficult than it needed to be. They allowed Phoenix, which has the worst record in the Western Conference, to get back in the game with a lackluster third quarter. When Utah's offense was in high gear in the first half, its defense couldn't stop the Suns. With the game being in doubt until the fourth quarter, Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin had to tighten his rotation. Starters Jefferson and Hayward played more than 40 minutes apiece, and they could have used some rest with a stretch of four games in six days starting on Friday.

NOTABLE: Dragic did not play because the Suns decided to rest him. Phoenix interim coach Lindsey Hunter said prior to the game that "everybody" in the organization was in agreement that the beat-up Dragic needed some time off. He will also sit out against Sacramento on Thursday night. Jazz reserve center Enes Kanter suffered a grotesque subluxed left shoulder injury while battling for a loose ball on the floor with Hamed Haddadi early in the second quarter. Kanter did not return to the game and will have an MRI on Thursday to determine the severity of his injury. Kanter and Haddadi were to have a jump ball, but because Kanter had to leave the game, the Suns chose 6-foot-1 Mo Williams to jump against Haddadi. Phoenix, not surprisingly, gained possession after the tip.
