Bucks-76ers Preview

The Milwaukee Bucks' current rough stretch has prevented them from improving their postseason position in the Eastern Conference.

At least they have a comfortable lead over the Philadelphia 76ers for the final playoff spot in the East.

The visiting Bucks can avoid a fourth straight loss overall and on the road while trying to sweep the season series from the 76ers for the first time in 39 years Wednesday night.

Owner of the eighth and final playoff spot in the East, Milwaukee (34-35) has a 7 1/2-game lead over ninth-place Philadelphia (27-43), is within striking distance of seventh-place Boston and four games out of the fifth spot. The Bucks, however, have dropped six of eight since winning six of seven and need to get back on track if they want to avoid facing streaking Miami in the first round.

"We have a lot of work to do," said guard Brandon Jennings, who had 12 points and 13 assists in Sunday's 104-99 loss to Atlanta on Sunday. "We'll just see what happens."

Two of Milwaukee's last three defeats came against the Hawks, who are sixth in the East. Monta Ellis scored 20 and Ersan Ilyasova had 19 with 10 rebounds as the Bucks looked slightly better Monday, shooting 45.7 percent after making 34.0 percent of their shots in the previous two contests. The Hawks, however, scored 23 points off 16 Milwaukee turnovers.

"We were right there, but just had some bad turnovers at the end," said Ilyasova, who returned after missing three games with a back injury and has averaged 21.5 points with 12.5 rebounds in his last four. "We are a good team and I know we can still make a run."

Milwaukee might have a good chance to begin a potential run with a fourth straight win over Philadelphia and first sweep 1973-74 - which also was 76ers coach Doug Collins' rookie season. The Bucks have averaged 103.0 points and shot 48.2 percent in the season's first three meetings, including a 105-96 win at Philadelphia on Nov. 12.

The Bucks have not won consecutive games in Philadelphia since 2005-06.

Ellis has scored at least 20 points in 13 of 15 games overall, and averaged 22.0 in his last seven versus Philadelphia.

Jennings has totaled 16 points and shot 5 of 30, including 1 of 12 from 3-point range, in the last two contests. However, he's averaged 26.3 on 47.5 percent shooting against the 76ers this season. He scored 33 and went 4 of 9 from beyond the arc at Philadelphia in November.

The 76ers have won two straight at home but look to bounce back after they concluded a 1-3 road trip with a 107-91 loss at Utah on Monday. Dorell Wright scored a team-high 19 off the bench as Philadelphia shot 38.6 percent and committed 13 turnovers that the Jazz turned into 24 points.

"We got it handed to us," said 7-foot-1 Spencer Hawes, who is averaging 16.2 points and 11.6 boards in six games. "Not much else to say."

Philadelphia swingman Evan Turner totaled 43 points despite going 8 of 19 from the field in each of the last two meetings with Milwaukee.

He's averaged a mere 9.0 points, shot 38.2 percent and committed 20 turnovers in the last 11 overall.

Hawes lifts 76ers past Bucks, 100-92

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Brandon Jennings had a blank stare as he scanned a disappointed Milwaukee locker room.

With the Bucks in the playoff chase, Jennings was benched in the fourth quarter, and wondered why he was singled out.

"I don't see any All-Stars in this locker room," he said.

Well, the Bucks didn't see him on the court. Jennings was scoreless for the first time in his NBA career and did not play in the final quarter of the Bucks' 100-92 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday night.

Jennings was quiet and controlled as he talked of his annoyance about sitting while the Bucks fell further behind seventh place in the East.

"I think that everyone should be held accountable," he said. "There's no maxed-out players in this locker room. So don't try to put me on a pedestal and just give everyone else the freedom to do whatever they want."

The Bucks' playoff push stalled in Philly - and so did their bus. Milwaukee's team bus was stalled out outside the Wells Fargo center, forcing arena workers to bring out jumper cables to try and get the vehicle going.

Jennings and the bus were both out of juice.

"I just felt like I needed to do something to energize our team," coach Jim Boylan said of his decision. "When you play that position in this league, there comes with it a lot of responsibility. The talent at that position is outstanding. So you have to bring it every single night. If that's not happening, you need to do something."

Monta Ellis scored 29 points for the Bucks. Ersan Ilyasova had 13 points and 18 rebounds.

After blowing an 18-point lead, the Sixers rallied from seven down in the fourth to win.

Spencer Hawes had 15 points and a career-high 17 rebounds, and Jrue Holiday and Damien Wilkins each scored 18 points. Thaddeus Young and Dorell Wright both scored 14 points for a Sixers team that put six players in double figures.

The Sixers returned from a 1-3 road trip to win their third straight game at home. On Fan Appreciation Night, the Sixers gave them something to feel good about.

"When a team's at home, you have all the fans on your side and energy is flowing through the building," Young said. "You definitely get up for those kinds of games."

The Sixers wasted an 18-point lead and needed to find their touch from 3-point range to get back into this one. Wright gave them a one-point with a 3-pointer and Holiday followed with another to make it 93-87. Evan Turner, who scored 13, made Philadelphia's eighth 3-pointer and the lead was up to nine.

From there the Sixers massaged the lead until they hit 98 points with a minute left. With the crowd of 16,640 bellowing "We want Big Macs!" if the Sixers hit 100 points, Wilkins obliged with a thunderous dunk that sent fans into a frenzy.

Fast food is about the only way to satisfy a Sixers fan this year after a season full of promise collapsed under Andrew Bynum's balky knees.

The Bucks are in eighth place in the Eastern Conference and fell 2 1/2 games behind Boston for seventh and the chance to avoid a first-round series against Miami.

Ellis took control in the third to help the Bucks grab the lead after a tough first half. He twice hit tying shots in the quarter as Milwaukee was 13 of 25 from the field. Mike Dunleavy hit a 3 to help them take a 78-76 lead into the fourth.

They couldn't keep it going. Jennings was scoreless off three missed shots in 17 minutes for the Bucks in the half. He was benched early in the third quarter and did not return. There was no injury report on Jennings, whose rookie contract expires at the end of the season, making him a restricted free agent.

He was scoreless for the first time in his 281st career NBA game.

"It's all about how hard you want to play and that has to be there every single night," Boylan said. "That is something we need to address. That is what we are all paid to do. It's definitely something that is of a concern."

Well out of the playoff race, but over .500 at home, the Sixers raced to an 18-point lead in the first half. Wright buried a 3 to start a 14-2 run that gave them a cushy lead.

"This season's been tough," Hawes said. "Going forward, we have a lot of pride. It's not just about next season, it's about finishing this season the right way."

Notes: 76ers coach Doug Collins said his son, Chris, had a good interview with Northwestern about its vacancy. Chris Collins is an associate head coach at Duke. "It fits the profile of what he's looking for in a school," Collins said. "The kind of athletes Chris has been recruiting at Duke is the kind of athletes he'll be recruiting there if he gets the job." ... The 76ers wished La Salle good luck in its NCAA tournament round of 16 game Thursday night against Wichita State.

THE FACTS: Damien Wilkins and Jrue Holiday each scored 18 points and Spencer Hawes continued his torrid play with 15 points and a career-high 17 rebounds as the Philadelphia 76ers defeated the Milwaukee Bucks 100-92 on Wednesday night. Dorell Wright and Thaddeus Young each scored 14 points and Evan Turner added 13 for the Sixers, who improved to 28-43 and avoided a four-game sweep by the Bucks this season.

Monta Ellis led the Bucks with 29 points, Larry Sanders scored 15 points while Ersan Ilyasova had 13 points and 18 rebounds. The Bucks have lost four in a row, falling to 34-36.

QUOTABLE: "It's a great feeling. We were locked in and communicating. We're focused on winning."

THE STAT: The Sixers outshot Milwaukee 47.2 percent to 41.6 percent and improved to 25-8 when outshooting the opposition this season. Over the past 11 games, the Sixers are shooting 47.3 percent.

TURNING POINT: Trailing 83-76 early in the fourth, the Sixers responded in a big way. They eventually reversed the trend and went ahead 98-87 with a 15-0 run in the middle. It was more than enough to pull away from the Bucks.

HOT: Young was 7-for-12 and Hawes was 7-for-14.

NOT: Ilyasova missed 12 of his 17 shots and J.J. Redick was 2-for-12 for the Bucks. Brandon Jennings was virtually invisible, going scoreless (0-for-3) in 17:16.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Hawes had 15 points, 17 rebounds and four assists in 35:06. It was his fifth double-double over the past seven games.

INSIDE THE ARENA: The crowd of 16,640 was rather lively for this late season matchup at the Wells Fargo Center. When the Sixers made a late run in the fourth quarter, the fans came alive in a big way.

GOOD MOVE: Hawes is playing at an extremely high level and the Sixers continue to run much of their offense through him. The plan worked against the Bucks. Hawes knocked down clutch shots, was physical in the low post and made all the right passes.

BAD MOVE: Bucks coach Jim Boylan sat Jennings for most of the game. Jennings has played very well against the Sixers all season. This was a curious decision.

ROOKIE WATCH: Bucks forward John Henson received a DNP-CD. For the Sixers, forward Arnett Moultrie had four points and three rebounds in 6:27.

NOTABLE: The Sixers have won four of their last five at home, including three straight, after dropping four of their previous five. ... Hawes is averaging 14.7 points on 53.8 percent shooting and 10.2 rebounds over the past 14 games. ... Jennings didn't play past the 9:37 mark of the third quarter. It's the first time he's gone scoreless in his career. Over the past three games, Jennings is averaging 5.3 points on 5-for-33 shooting. ... Over the past 12 games, Wilkins is averaging 13.9 points on 53.7 percent shooting. ... The Sixers reached the 100-point plateau, marking the third time getting there over the past four games. Over the past 15 games, the Sixers are averaging 96.7 points. ... Bucks forward Luc Mbah a Moute returned after missing the past eight games with a sprained toe.
