Hawks-Raptors Preview

The Atlanta Hawks have a second opportunity to clinch a playoff spot, and coach Larry Drew hopes his team is more prepared this time around.

Following a disappointing defeat, visiting Atlanta seeks a 13th victory in 15 meetings with the Toronto Raptors, who could have Rudy Gay back in the lineup Wednesday night.

The Hawks (39-32) had a chance to wrap up their sixth consecutive playoff berth Monday, but they instead fell behind by as many as 28 points in a 100-94 road loss to an Indiana team that played without four key contributors.

Josh Smith scored a game-high 20 points as Atlanta lost for the second time in three games.

"It was a game that we should have, I thought, should have been a little more focused and played a little bit more composed," Drew said. "We allowed the pressure to speed us up, and we allowed some (foul) calls to just completely take us out of what our focus should have been."

The Hawks are tied with Chicago for fifth place in the Eastern Conference, 2 1/2 games behind Brooklyn for home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs. The bench made the game interesting in the fourth quarter Monday, but Drew was surprised his squad played so poorly in a contest that meant so much.

"The disappointing thing was that we just lost our composure," Drew said. "We didn't handle it the right way. It just took us out of our game."

The Hawks, in the midst of a four-game trip that concludes Friday against Boston, can clinch a playoff spot with a fifth straight road victory over the Raptors, who are hoping Gay's sore back will be healed enough for him to play.

Gay suffered the injury in Friday's 99-94 home loss to New York, then sat out Saturday's 110-84 defeat to the Knicks. He practice Monday and Tuesday and said he is planning to play against the Hawks.

With the playoffs out of reach, coach Dwane Casey is already beginning to prepare for next season.

"What I would like to have is for (Gay) to be healthy and where we can get a rhythm and a style of play established with he and DeMar (DeRozan) and he and Kyle (Lowry) and that group," Casey said. "That would be the only thing I would like to have is some continuity going into the end of the year. That way we kind of know what we have coming into next year."

It's been a disappointing season as Toronto (26-44) has played half its games without the injured Andrea Bargnani. The Raptors, who have lost four straight and 11 of 14, turned the ball over 18 times Saturday.

"The turnovers were probably the No. 1 aspect of the game that hurt us. That was the most disappointing thing, the type of turnovers that we had," Casey said. "(But) I thought the fight was there."

On the same day Toronto officially completed the trade to acquire Gay from Memphis, the Raptors had nine players in uniform and fell 93-92 at Atlanta on Jan. 30. Al Horford's dunk with 22 seconds remaining helped the Hawks prevail in the only meeting between the teams this season.

Hawks beat Raptors 107-88 to clinch playoff berth

TORONTO (AP) The Atlanta Hawks weren't expected to make it back to the playoffs after trading Joe Johnson and Marvin Williams last summer.

It must feel good to silence the doubters.

Al Horford scored 10 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter, Jeff Teague had 24 points and 13 assists and the Hawks clinched a playoff berth for the sixth straight season, beating the Toronto Raptors 107-88 on Wednesday night.

"I'm really proud of this bunch with what we accomplished tonight," Hawks coach Larry Drew said. "There were a lot of people that counted us out at the start of the season and said we wouldn't be in this position. With all the changes that we made, here we are."

Teague was just as delighted.

"This is a group no one really gave a chance," he said. "For us to come together and be in the playoffs this year, it's a lot of excitement."

After being hired last June, Hawks general manager Danny Ferry turned over the roster by dealing Johnson to Brooklyn and Williams to Utah. Willie Green was sent to the Clippers, Jordan Farmar was waived and Kirk Hinrich left as a free agent.

Atlanta's success at weathering those changes means a lot to Horford.

"This team could have easily gone the other way," he said. "We haven't had the perfect year, a lot of injuries. We've been up and down as a team. I'm proud of the way we've been able to hang in there and play through adversity. That's been the biggest thing for us."

The Hawks still have a shot at earning home court advantage in the first round. They entered play Wednesday tied with Chicago for the fifth seed, just 2 1/2 games behind fourth-place Brooklyn.

"We just want to be in the best position that we can, whatever that is," Horford said.

Josh Smith scored 19 points for the Hawks, who used a 16-0 run midway through the fourth to win for the 13th time in their last 15 meetings with the Raptors.

Horford had just six points in the first half but still reached double digits for the 31st consecutive game, the second-longest streak of his career. He did it in 33 straight games in 2009-10.

"He has really come into his own," Drew said. "He got off to a little bit of a slow start but as the game went on he started getting more and more into a rhythm. You could see in the second half where he was really wanting the basketball so we were running plays where we got him the ball. We were putting him positions where he was picking and popping and he was knocking the shot down."

Raptors coach Dwane Casey had suggested his team might shut down Rudy Gay after the star forward left Friday's home loss to the Knicks with a sore back, then sat out Saturday's loss in New York. Still sore, Gay started against the Hawks, scoring 15 points in 34 minutes and matching his season high with 12 rebounds.

Jonas Valanciunas scored 19 points, DeMar DeRozan had 14, Terrence Ross 13 and Alan Anderson 12 for the Raptors, who have lost four straight and 11 of 14.

Toronto forward Amir Johnson left with 10:28 left in the third with a left leg contusion. X-rays were negative but he did not return.

Toronto was outscored 55-29 after Johnson went down, leaving Casey bemoaning his team's lack of toughness.

"We didn't respond when they got physical," Casey said. "We're looking for calls, and they're not calling them."

The Raptors trailed 81-80 after Anderson's 3-pointer with 9:11 left, but Horford scored six of the next eight points, four on jump shots and two on a dunk, putting the Hawks up 89-80 with 7:26 to play.

Teague made back-to-back 3-pointers then added a driving jump shot, giving the Hawks a 97-80 lead with 4:39 left.

DeRozan snapped Toronto's 4:48 scoreless streak with a pair of free throws, but Horford answered with a slam off an alley-oop from Teague.

Gay scored six in the first and DeRozan and Amir Johnson each had five as the Raptors led 25-20 after one.

Ross scored nine points in the second and DeRozan had seven, including a jump shot with less than two seconds left, giving the Raptors a 54-44 lead at the half.

Atlanta took a 71-69 lead, its first since early in the second quarter, on Smith's 3 with 3:23 left in the third. Ross scored four of Toronto's next six points as the Raptors reclaimed the lead, but a pair of free throws by Smith with 30 seconds left knotted the score at 75-all heading to the fourth.

Atlanta's Kyle Korver extended his streak of game with at least one 3-pointer to 65. Korver's streak is the fifth-longest in NBA history. Reggie Miller (68 games) had the fourth-longest, while Dana Barros tops the list with an 89-game streak.

THE FACTS: The Atlanta Hawks (40-32) clinched a playoff berth for a sixth straight season with a 107-88 win over the Toronto Raptors (26-45) at Air Canada Centre on Wednesday. The Hawks finished strong outscoring the Raptors 63-34 in the second half, behind Al Horford's 26 points and 12 rebounds, 10 of which he scored in the fourth quarter. Jeff Teague added a double-double of 24 points and 13 assists, while Josh Smith chipped in 19 points.

The Raptors led for much of the first half, leading by as many as 11 points and took a 54-44 lead into halftime. The Hawks responded with a 12-5 run midway through the third to take their first lead since the break on a Smith's three-pointer to go ahead 71-69. The Raptors rallied back to close the seesaw quarter at 75-75. However, the Hawks went on a 16-0 run with 4:39 left, ten of those points scored by Teague while he assisted on two others, widening their lead to 97-80,

The Raptors had no answer and lost their fifth game in a row and 13 of 15 games versus the Hawks. Rookie Jonas Valanciunas led Toronto with 19 points and Rudy Gay added a15 point and 12 rebound double-double, back in the lineup after missing a game due to a sore back. DeMar DeRozan scored 14 points, while rookie Terrence Ross and Alan Anderson added 13 and 12 points off the bench respectively.

QUOTABLE: "Obviously we don't have the luxury to have a guy like Joe (Johnson), Joe could just come in and take over a game, now we have to do it more as a unit. Whether it's Josh (Smith) that it had it going earlier, or Jeff (Teague) or myself, we all have to do it at different times."

THE STAT: Two 30-plus quarters in the second half are going to win a ball game every time. To add that the Raptors could only muster 34 points to the Hawks 63, is proof that regardless of what statistical categories a team possess an edge in, the score tells the tale

TURNING POINT: As soon as the fourth quarter started the Hawks jumped out on a 22-5 run to take control of the game from a 75-75 tie, the Raptors laid down and the Hawks stepped on their necks. The tandem of Teague and Horford combined for 20 points and proved too much, making it an early night.

QUOTABLE II: "It feels special cause this is a group that no one really gave a chance. So for us to come together and be in the playoffs this year, is really exciting."

HOT: Horford did it all for the Hawks, particularly when it counted. After tallying six points and six rebounds in the first half, he added another 20 points in the second, finishing the game with 12 rebounds.

NOT: The Raptors turned over the ball 20 times leading to 24 points for the Hawks, 12 of which occurred in the second half, Gay had five on his own.

GOOD MOVE: After DeRozan jumped out for 12 points in the first half, the Hawks threw mixes of Smith and Ivan Johnson on him defensively, neutralizing him and limiting him to one more basket for the remainder of the game.

NOTABLE: Raptors forward Amir Johnson left the game in the third quarter with a left leg contusion and did not return. Hawk guard Devin Harris was inactive, suffering from a sore left foot. The win was the Hawks second in a row for the season after defeating Toronto at home 93-92 on January 30. The Hawks are 2-1 on a four-game road trip that concludes in Boston on Friday.
