Spurs-Rockets Preview

With Tony Parker back, the San Antonio Spurs appear to be in much better shape as they continue their quest for the top seed in the Western Conference.

Parker has also been a big reason why the Spurs have an opportunity to wrap up their first four-game season sweep of the Houston Rockets since 2005-06 on Sunday night.

Following his eight-game absence because of a sprained left ankle, Parker finished with 22 points - including six in overtime - to lead the Spurs to a 104-97 victory over Utah on Friday.

Parker was averaging 27.0 points on 53.4 percent and 7.9 assists in eight games prior to his injury against the Kings on March 1.

"The game got tight at the end in regulation and then in overtime, and he was Tony Parker," said coach Gregg Popovich. "Like I said, up until the time he got hurt, there wasn't a point guard in the league playing better than Tony Parker."

The Spurs (53-16) are trying to hold off Oklahoma City for the top spot in the West and begin a challenging portion of their schedule on Sunday with five straight games against teams with winning records.

Parker should be able to get the Spurs off to strong start as he looks to carry them to a fifth straight win against the Rockets. He recorded his first career triple-double with 27 points, 12 assists and 12 rebounds in a 134-126 overtime victory in Houston on Dec. 10 and had 31 points and 10 assists in a 122-116 home win on Dec. 28.

Parker also led the way with 17 points and seven assists in a 114-92 victory in San Antonio on Dec. 7.

Tim Duncan is playing like his old self heading into this contest, averaging 25.5 points and 15.0 rebounds in his last four.

The Spurs have scored 123.3 per game - 18.9 above their season average - and shot 54.7 percent from the field in the three wins.

Houston, though, has been playing better defensively over its season-long seven-game homestand. While the Rockets have allowed 102.4 points per game at home on the season, they've given up just 92.0 over their last five at the Toyota Center.

Houston claimed its 10th win in 12 home games with a 116-78 victory over Cleveland on Friday. The Rockets held the Cavaliers to 53 points over the final three quarters and 36.0 percent shooting for the game.

Harden led the way with 20 points, Thomas Robinson had 15 off the bench and Omer Asik added 13 and 11 rebounds for the Rockets, who shot 57.1 percent.

"That was a big win for us, and now we've got an even bigger one coming up Sunday," said forward Chandler Parsons, who also added 13 points.

Houston (38-31), which is battling Golden State for the sixth seed in the West, opens a difficult stretch of its own with the Spurs, Indiana, Memphis and the Los Angeles Clippers in its next four games.

While Harden missed the meeting in Houston with a sprained right ankle, he's totaled 62 points on 20-of-38 shooting in his two games against the Spurs.

Jeremy Lin stepped up in Harden's absence and matched his career high with 38 points in that December loss, but will have to bounce back after tying his season low with four points on Friday.

The Rockets have averaged 111.3 points against the Spurs and a league-best 110.1 on their home floor this season.

Harden's late jumper lifts Rockets over Spurs

HOUSTON (AP) The Houston Rockets got contributions from several players Sunday night against the Spurs.

In closing time, they turned to James Harden again.

Harden sank an off-balance jumper with 4.5 seconds left to lift the Rockets to a 96-95 victory over San Antonio. Harden scored 18 of his 29 points in the second half as the Rockets rallied from three down in the final minute to snap a four-game losing streak to their state rivals.

Houston has won three in a row and inched closer to clinching a postseason berth.

"Tonight was a great environment, great crowd," Harden said. "Hopefully, we can continue to build off this lead. It's momentum."

Tony Parker scored 23 points, including 10 in a row to put San Antonio ahead with just under 2 minutes left. The Spurs led 95-94 when Harden got the ball from Omer Asik, drove to the free throw line and hit the winning jumper between Tim Duncan and Kawhi Leonard.

"The shot was there, it was a pull-up," Harden said. "I just had the confidence to go out there and shoot it."

Duncan missed a jumper from the wing just before the buzzer sounded and the Spurs had a four-game winning streak snapped.

Chandler Parsons scored 20 points and Asik grabbed 14 rebounds for the Rockets. Backup point guard Patrick Beverley had 11 points and blocked Danny Green's layup attempt with 1:22 left to keep Houston within one.

Duncan had 17 points and seven rebounds for the Spurs, who shot 42 percent (33 of 78), gave away 18 turnovers and were held below 100 points for just the third time in 12 games.

"The last few games have been pretty good," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "I thought we worked hard tonight, executed pretty well. You can't turn it over 18 times on the road."

The Rockets, meanwhile, have held four of their last six opponents under 100 points and won each of those games.

"We're growing," Harden said. "It took us some time, but we usually rely on our shots. If we're not making shots, we kind of give up on our defense. The last few weeks, it's been our defensive effort, holding teams down defensively and trying to get out and score our transition baskets."

The Spurs and Rockets could potentially meet in the first round of the playoffs, with the Spurs atop the Western Conference and Houston currently sitting at No. 7, three games ahead of the L.A. Lakers.

Their last matchup of the regular season had a postseason feel, with the lead changing hands nine times in the third quarter before Houston finished with an 11-4 spurt to lead 74-67. Harden went 6 for 6 from the free throw line and scored 12 points in the quarter, attacking the basket more than he did in the first half.

"He's good at finding hands and arms and he reaches and will make you foul him," said Green, who guarded Harden much of the night. "You pretty much have to play defense without your hands, which is a hard thing to do."

Rockets backup forward Greg Smith had the highlight of the game early in the fourth, throwing down a one-handed dunk over Tiago Splitter for an 81-74 lead. Carlos Delfino, Parsons and Jeremy Lin all missed open 3-pointers over the next 3 minutes and Splitter flipped in a hook shot and a reverse layup to keep the Spurs close.

Parker, in his second game back after returning from a sprained left ankle, then pushed San Antonio in front with his individual scoring spurt, including a fadeaway jumper over Beverley.

Parker finished 7 for 13 from the field and also had seven assists.

"TP is getting his rhythm back," Duncan said. "He's feeling good and obviously, he's our attack guy on the floor and he is the guy we go through in the fourth quarter."

Notes: The Spurs assigned C Aron Baynes to the NBA Development League. The 6-foot-10 rookie from Australia has played in 11 games for the Spurs this season. ... Harden went 15-for-17 from the free throw line and now has 602 made free throws this season. ... Rockets F Francisco Garcia sat out with an illness. Garcia has played in eight games for Houston since coming over in a trade with Sacramento just before the Feb. 21 deadline. ... Former Rockets and Spurs C Moses Malone had a courtside seat next to the Houston bench. The Hall of Famer played for Houston from 1976-82 and with San Antonio in 1994-95.

THE FACTS: San Antonio Spurs guard Tony Parker caught fire in crunch time, but Houston Rockets guard James Harden countered Parker's late surge with his own clutch play.

Harden finished with 29 points, nine rebounds and six assists and drained a 15-foot pull-up jump shot with 4.5 seconds remaining to lift the Rockets to a thrilling 96-95 victory over the Spurs on Sunday at Toyota Center. Forward Chandler Parsons added 20 points and eight boards for Houston (39-31), which has won three straight games overall for the first time since Jan. 25-28 and 11 of 13 at home. Center Omer Asik snatched 14 rebounds and played lock-down defense on San Antonio's Tim Duncan in the final period, limiting the Big Fundamental to zero points on 0-for-3 shooting.

Parker led the Spurs (53-17), which saw their four-game winning streak overall and against the Rockets snapped, with 23 points on 7-for-13 shooting and seven dimes. Duncan poured in 17 points to go with seven rebounds, but his flat performance down the stretch capped San Antonio's third loss in its last four road tilts.

QUOTABLE: "Duncan was playing back the majority of the game, and he's a great shot blocker. The shot that was there was the pull-up, and I had the confidence to go out there and shoot it."

THE STAT: The Rockets did not take full advantage of their second-shot opportunities, but they made the Spurs squander most of theirs. Houston, which netted 16 second-chance points on 6-for-10 shooting, held San Antonio to five second-chance points on 2-for-9 shooting.

TURNING POINT: Houston carried a seven-point advantage into the fourth quarter and maintained that lead for the first six-plus minutes of the period. But with the Spurs trailing 89-83, Parker took charge by scoring 10 consecutive points to put San Antonio in front 93-89. Parker's play inspired San Antonio to crank up its defensive intensity during this span, leading to seven consecutive misses for the Rockets. The back-and-forth battle continued until the final seconds, when Harden rose up and buried a 15-footer to give Houston a 96-95 lead with 4.5 seconds to play. Duncan tried to steal the victory for the Spurs after a timeout, but his turn-around jumper over Asik did not drop.

QUOTABLE II: "He's very aggressive, and he takes shots and makes [the refs] make calls, and he kept them right in the game. I think he always plays at a very steady pace and picks and chooses his spots."

GOOD MOVE: Houston coach Kevin McHale used rookie backup point guard Patrick Beverley for the final 3:39 because of his defensive prowess. Beverley made McHale's decision look incredibly intelligent when he sparked a massive five-point swing by blocking a Danny Green layup in transition with the Spurs leading 93-89 with 90 seconds left to play.

QUOTABLE III: "I thought one of the biggest plays of the game was Patrick running down that block. That was a phenomenal block."

BAD MOVE: Manu Ginobili, who entered Sunday shooting 31.6 percent from the field over the last seven games, seemed tentative to pull the trigger when he had good looks at the basket. Ginobili also argued with the officials more than usual when he felt he was fouled, illustrating the toll his shooting slump is taking.

HOT: For the second game in a row, Parker saved his best plays for the end. The Spurs point guard netted 12 of his 23 points, including a perfect 6-for-6 effort at the free-throw line, and did not commit a turnover in the final period. In his return from a right ankle sprain Friday, Parker scored 13 points over the course of the fourth quarter and overtime to lead San Antonio past the Utah Jazz.

QUOTABLE IV: "TP's getting his rhythm back. He's feeling good, and obviously, he's our attack guy on the floor. ... He made some plays to get us back in the game and give us a chance to win it."

NOT: Parsons could not shake his perimeter shooting slump, as the second-year forward knocked down only two of seven 3-point attempts. Including Sunday's outing, Parsons has nailed only 20.7 percent (6-for-29) of his attempts from behind the arc over his last six games.

NOTABLE: Spurs legend David Robinson attended the game with his son. ... San Antonio squandered a chance to sweep the season-series with the Rockets for the first time since 2005-06. ... After Sunday's 1-for-6 effort, Ginobili has shot 30.6 percent (26-for-85) from the field over his last eight games. ... Harden has netted less than 20 points only once since the All-Star break. ... Asik has grabbed at least 10 rebounds in 49 games this season, the most double-digit rebounding performances in a season by a Houston player since Hakeem Olajuwon recorded 63 such outings in 1993-94. ... The Rockets are eight games above .500 for the first time this season, but their next three opponents are playoff-bound teams. ... Houston improved to 21-5 this season when it limits its opponent to less than 100 points. ... The Spurs fell to 48-3 this season when they make a higher percentage of their shot attempts than their opponent and 36-4 when they hold their opponent below 45.0 percent shooting.
