Trail Blazers-Thunder Preview

Facing a potential third straight loss, the Oklahoma City Thunder turned to their defense to bail them out against one of the league's worst teams.

The Thunder might have a more difficult time trying to slip past a Portland Trail Blazers team that has built some momentum on its road trip.

Oklahoma City will try to beat Portland for the sixth straight time and move within two games of the Western Conference lead on Sunday night.

While they have one of the NBA's top scoring offenses, the Thunder (51-19) stepped up defensively after visiting Orlando took a stunning two-point lead with 7:29 remaining on Friday. Oklahoma City held the lowly Magic without a field goal over the final 2:26 on the way to a 97-89 home win that snapped its brief two-game skid.

The Thunder have allowed 97.2 points per game on the season, but limited their opponents to just 89.5 on 38.7 percent shooting in their last two contests.

"We had two tough losses ... I give our guys a lot of credit," Oklahoma City coach Scott Brooks said. "They picked themselves up and came into tonight with a good mindset. We got the win and we're moving on to the next game."

Now the Thunder will try to clamp down on the Trail Blazers after holding them to just 87.5 points per game and 36.0 percent shooting in a pair of victories earlier this season.

Russell Westbrook led the offense with 32 points on 13-of-24 shooting and Kevin Durant had 23, 17 rebounds and seven assists in a 106-92 win in Oklahoma City on Nov. 2. Durant, the league's leading scorer at 28.4 per game, also finished with 33 in an 87-83 victory at Portland on Jan. 13.

Westbrook had 18 on 5-of-21 shooting in that meeting, but has averaged 29.2 while shooting 51.9 percent in his last five home games in this series.

Although the Thunder rank near the top of the league in 3-point percentage (37.7), they've hit just 16 for 85 (18.8) from beyond the arc over their last four games.

It may not be easy breaking out of that slump against the Trail Blazers (33-36), who are one of the league's best teams at defending the perimeter. Portland has limited its opponents to 33.9 percent shooting from long range and 11 for 38 in its back-to-back victories.

Since losing 14 of 16 on the road, the Trail Blazers have won consecutive road games for the first time since early January with a 99-89 victory at Chicago on Thursday and a 104-93 win at Atlanta on Friday.

Against the Hawks, Wesley Matthews led the way with 28 points, Damian Lillard added 22 and LaMarcus Aldridge had 20 and 13 rebounds for the Trail Blazers, who are tied for 10th in the West and three games behind the eighth-place Los Angeles Lakers.

"We're going to keep on fighting until we're mathematically eliminated," Matthews said.

Aldridge has scored at least 20 in seven straight games, averaging 26.0 points and 11.7 rebounds during that stretch. He's also totaled 55 and 26, respectively, against the Thunder.

With Lillard and Matthews combining to shoot 28 for 51 from beyond the arc, the Trail Blazers have made at least 10 3s in each of their last four games while shooting 48.4 percent from long range in that span.

Durant helps Thunder drop Blazers, 103-83

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Motivated by a technical foul on his coach, Russell Westbrook took control of a tight game and provided the energy the Oklahoma City Thunder needed to pull away from the Portland Trail Blazers.

Kevin Durant had 24 points and 10 rebounds, and Westbrook scored 21 points and fueled a key third-quarter spurt that helped Oklahoma City beat Portland 103-83 on Sunday night.

Serge Ibaka added 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting - all in the second half - for Oklahoma City (52-19), which made up ground on the San Antonio Spurs in the race for the Western Conference's top playoff spot. San Antonio (53-17) lost to Houston on Sunday and now is 1 1/2 games ahead of the Thunder.

Oklahoma City held Portland to 36 points in the second half, with only 15 of those coming in the fourth quarter.

"The defense really picked up as the game went along," Oklahoma City coach Scott Brooks said. "Going into this game you knew that they had five guys that score almost 14 points or above so everybody had to do their job and guard tonight. I thought our defense was really good in the second half."

Damian Lillard scored 19 points for Portland (33-37), which finished 2-3 on a five-game road trip. The Blazers, who didn't score during the final six minutes, fell three games behind the Los Angeles Lakers in the race for the Western Conference's eighth and final playoff spot.

Brooks was called for a technical foul with 2:53 left in the third quarter and that seemed to spark Westbrook. Portland's Nicolas Batum made 2-of-3 free throws to tie the game 63-63, but a steal and dunk by Westbrook started a 10-2 run that put the Thunder ahead 73-65.

Westbrook assisted on a 14-foot jumper by Ibaka and capped the spurt with a three-point play. Westbrook finished with nine assists.

"Russell really changed the game with that two-to-three minute stretch, defensively and offensively, in the third quarter," Brooks said. "The game was still anybody's game and that gave us enough of a lead. We took it into the fourth quarter and then we did a great job of finishing the game by making shots and defending. We didn't give them any easy looks in the fourth quarter."

In the fourth quarter, Portland twice pulled within five points, the last time at 88-83 on Aldridge's jumper with 6:01 left. The Trail Blazers didn't score again and finished the game shooting 40.5 percent after shooting 51.4 percent in the first half.

"I thought it was a good effort against arguably the best team in the West," Portland coach Terry Stotts said. "It was our fifth game in seven nights and we just didn't have it at the end. They're a talented team that creates a lot of problems at both ends of the floor. I don't think that the final score is indicative of how the game went."

Durant answered with a 3-pointer and after four straight futile possessions by the Trail Blazers, Ibaka hit a 14-foot jumper to give Oklahoma City its biggest lead at 95-83 with 3:19 left. Oklahoma City went on to score 15 straight points to end the game.

Ibaka, saddled by foul trouble, didn't take a shot in the first half but consistently knocked down mid-range shots after halftime.

"It shows that he's mature," Westbrook said of Ibaka. "He's gotten better. It's tough to play with fouls in the first half. He came back in the second half and did a great job."

Aldridge recorded his 35th double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds, but fell below his 27.5-point scoring average in Portland's two previous games against Oklahoma City this season. He finished 3-of-14 from the field.

After Ibaka got into foul trouble, Kendrick Perkins and Nick Collison mostly shared defensive duties against Aldridge before Ibaka was able to return in the second half.

"It was a combination of great defense and being lucky because of the shots he missed," Durant said. "Our bigs made him think a few times on those shots. Perk did a great job. Serge, Nick and (Hasheem Thabeet) did a great job on him."

Oklahoma City has won six straight games against Portland, the longest streak by the Thunder franchise over the Trail Blazers since the Seattle SuperSonics won six straight from Feb. 9, 1994, to Jan. 15, 1995. It's the third straight season the Thunder have taken the season series from Portland, the first time that's happened since a run from the 1995-96 to 1997-98 seasons.

The Thunder scored 13 straight points during a 2 1/2-minute stretch of the first quarter to go up 19-10 and didn't trail again until J.J. Hickson capped a 6-of-9 shooting half by banking in a 16-foot jumper at the buzzer to put Portland ahead 47-45.

Portland led by five points in the third quarter, but consecutive pull-up jumpers by Thabo Sefolosha and Westbrook put the Thunder back ahead 60-59 at the 5:43 mark.

Kevin Martin scored 11 points for Oklahoma City and Collison added 10. Batum finished with 13 points for Portland, with Hickson scoring 12 and Eric Maynor adding 10. It was Maynor's first game in Oklahoma City since the Thunder traded him to Portland last month. He received applause from the crowd of 18,203 at Chesapeake Energy Arena when he entered the game.

"It was just good to see all of those guys," Maynor said. "It felt good for the crowd to clap for me when I checked in and stuff like that. I had some good memories here. I wish we could have got a win, but other than that it was cool."

THE FACTS: The Oklahoma City Thunder used a big second half and won for only the fifth time this season when trailing at halftime (12 losses). Oklahoma City ended up blowing past the Portland Trail Blazers 103-83 in a game they trailed 47-45 at the half.

Kevin Durant led all scorers with 24 points, plus pulled down 10 rebounds and Russell Westbrook added 21. Serge Ibaka was mired in foul trouble the first half and didn't take a shot but finished with 16 points on 7-for-9 second half shooting. He also blocked five shots.

The Blazers (33-37) had five players in double figures led by rookie point guard Damian Lillard who dropped in 19 points while handing out six assists. Nicolas Batum had 13 and J.J. Hickson added a dozen. LaMarcus Aldridge struggled against the Thunder big men all night going just 3-for-14. He ended up with 10 points (11 below his average) but did grab a game-high 12 rebounds. Eric Maynor in his first return trip to Oklahoma City since being traded to the Blazers scored 10 points and handed out four assists.

The Thunder (52-19) shot 52.4 percent for the game and are now 24-1 when shooting over 50 percent in a game this season. The Blazers were held to just 40.5 percent and turned the ball over 17 times. OKC outscored Portland 48-30 in the paint, 20-9 on fast breaks and 14-11 in second chance points.

THE STAT: After allowing Portland to shoot 51.4 percent in the first half (including 63.2 percent in the second quarter) the Thunder buckled down and locked up the Trail Blazers in the second half allowing only 36 points on 31.0 percent shooting in the final 24 minutes.

TURNING POINT: The Thunder used a 10-3 run over the last 1:30 of the third quarter to give themselves some breathing room over a tenacious Portland squad that finally began to wilt halfway through the fourth quarter.

INSIDE THE ARENA: The 102nd consecutive sell-out inside Chesapeake Energy Arena. Thunder fan Justin Dougherty, a television sports reporter in Springfield, Missouri, about brought the house down between the third and fourth quarters by swishing a half-court shot worth $20,000. His girlfriend bought the tickets as a birthday present for Justin. He got an extra bonus when Durant ran out onto the court to congratulate him. It's the second time this season a fan has hit the half-court $20,000 shot.

GOOD MOVE: Thunder guard Reggie Jackson leading an OKC fast break across the center court line finds a streaking Westbrook at the free throw line extended and fires a long bounce-pass that hits Westbrook in stride as he hits the lane and goes up for a slam in the first quarter.

GOOD MOVE TOO: With the Thunder leading just 63-61 late in the third quarter Brooks became irate at a non-call by official James Williams. Brooks earned a technical foul for his rant and after that the Thunder outscored the Trail Blazers 40-21 for the rest of the game.

NOTABLE: With 13 points tonight Batum goes over the 1,000 point mark in a season for the first time in his career. He is the 46th Trail Blazer to accomplish the feat.
