Pacers-Bulls Preview

Following a difficult stretch, the Indiana Pacers are once again making progress toward their first Central Division title in nine seasons.

A season sweep of the Chicago Bulls would certainly help their cause.

The Pacers will try to extend their lead in the division by sending the slumping Bulls to another loss Saturday night at the United Center.

After dropping four of six, Indiana (43-26) has won its past three games by an average of 22.4 points. David West has missed all three of those games with a back injury, but Tyler Hansbrough has started in his place and averaged 18.0 points and 12.3 rebounds.

Hansbrough had a team-best 22 points and 12 boards Friday in a 102-78 rout of Milwaukee.

"I feel like I'm trying to get into the flow of the game, not rushing," Hansbrough said.

With the win, the Pacers moved six games ahead of second-place Chicago in the Central, and they can widen that gap even further with their first season-series sweep of the Bulls since 2001-02.

"It's going to be tough to get that fourth win (of the season) against Chicago, but I think the guys are up for the challenge," coach Frank Vogel said.

Chicago (36-31) has dropped six of eight - beginning with a 97-92 loss at Indiana on March 3 - and is in danger of losing three straight for the first time since November. The Bulls got starting guard Kirk Hinrich and reserve Taj Gibson back from injuries Thursday but fell 99-89 to visiting Portland.

They trailed by as many as 28 before making the score a little more respectable in the fourth quarter. The Bulls are a half-game ahead of Boston for sixth place in the Eastern Conference, but their slump has left them only 2 1/2 games in front of the eighth-place Bucks.

"Every game counts, and we need everybody. We've got to keep pushing," Gibson said. "It doesn't get easy at all if you look at our schedule. We've got a lot of tough teams coming up. We've got to keep fighting."

Chicago is still playing without superstar point guard Derrick Rose, who said "nobody knows but God" when he'll return from last year's knee surgery. Veteran guard Richard Hamilton hasn't played since Feb. 26 because of back spasms.

Hamilton was also out the last time the Pacers visited Chicago, an 80-76 loss for the Bulls on Dec. 4. Paul George had 34 points and nine rebounds as Indiana won for the second time in three trips to the United Center following nine straight losses there, including three in the 2011 playoffs.

George is averaging 21.7 points and 10.0 boards in the season series. West has been even more productive against the Bulls in 2012-13 - totaling 60 points on 22-of-36 shooting in the last two matchups - but he is expected to remain out Saturday.

Hansbrough has shot 5 of 25 and averaged 3.6 points in his last five games versus Chicago, all as a reserve.

Deng scores 20 and Bulls beat Pacers 87-84

CHICAGO (AP) The Chicago Bulls are used to dealing with injuries so they weren't rattled when All-Star center Joakim Noah didn't play Saturday night against the Indiana Pacers.

As they have done all season, the Bulls turned to their reserves, including veteran center Nazr Mohammed, forward Taj Gibson, and guards Daequan Cook and Nate Robinson, to rally from a 10-point deficit for an 87-84 victory that snapped Indiana's three-game winning streak.

"That is the way we have to play; we have to do it collectively," Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said after his team avoided a three-game losing streak. "A lot of guys stepped up."

Forward Luol Deng scored 20 points and Carlos Boozer had 18, but the offensive stars of the second-half Chicago rally came off the bench.

Chicago's reserves outscored Indiana 32-15 for the game, and Nazr Mohammed had 11 points and seven rebounds in place of Noah, who has a lingering foot problem and Thibodeau said is likely to miss Sunday's game against Minnesota.

Reserve forward Taj Gibson scored 11 points and backup guards Daequan Cook and Nate Robinson had nine each for Chicago.

"You look at Daequan, coming from the teams he was playing on," Gibson said. "In this league it is all about confidence. And Nazr, his presence speaks for itself. He won a championship, played on numerous great teams. He is always ready to go.

"They stepped up big and everyone was pulling for them."

Noah has plantar fasciitis in his right foot, a problem that dates when he missed three games in February.

Despite the absence of their All-Star center, the Bulls (37-31) went on a 13-5 run starting the fourth quarter to take an 81-72 lead. They still needed Indiana's Paul George to miss two 3-point attempts at the end to secure the victory.

A four-point play by George Hill brought Indiana within 87-84 in the final minute. After a missed driving shot by Chicago's Kirk Hinrich with 16 seconds left, the Pacers had a chance to tie. But George missed from 24 feet with 3.8 seconds left and after an offensive rebound got another chance at the buzzer from 25 feet but it also rimmed out.

"Both shots felt very comfortable to me," George said. "It just wasn't my night. I couldn't really get into a rhythm outside the 3-point line."

George finished with 23 points, but was 1 of 6 beyond the 3-point line and had just three points in the fourth quarter, when the Pacers made only 4 of 20 shots from the floor. They missed 13 of their first 15, while the Bulls went on their 13-5 run.

"We kind of went for a lot of jump shots," George said. "We should have kept attacking."

The Pacers (43-27) tried taking advantage of Noah's absence immediately by going to center Roy Hibbert. He finished with 18 points.

However, George picked up his fourth foul in the third quarter and it slowed Indiana's momentum while the Bulls bench players took control.

"It was their defense, but we struggled to score," said Pacers coach Frank Vogel, whose team was coming off a Friday night win in Milwaukee. "We had a lot of starters on the bench. Paul was in foul trouble and George (Hill) had a strained groin.

"We struggled to score down the stretch."

Hill had 11 points and Lance Stephenson 10 for the Pacers, who were outscored by Chicago 42-30 in the paint and 18-17 on second-chance points despite the absence of Noah.

THE FACTS: Take Danny Granger (sore left knee), David West (sprained lower back), Joakim Noah (strained left foot) and Derrick Rose (sore left knee) from the Pacers and the Bulls, and what do you have left? The Indianapolis Olympians and the Chicago Stags in the pre-shot clock era, that's what. In a scrum between two of the premier defensive teams in the league, the Bulls grinded out an 87-84 victory, their first against the Pacers this season and only their second in the last six games.

Forward Luol Deng snapped out a recent funk to score a team-high 20 points, while forward Carlos Boozer contributed 18 points and 10 rebounds. Seldom-used reserve guard Daequan Cook was the unsung hero. He finished with nine points, five rebounds, two assists and a bruised left thigh, the result of a header over a television cameraman late in the fourth quarter. The Pacers were led by forward Paul George (23 points, 11 rebounds) and center Roy Hibbert (18 points, 12 rebounds).

The Bulls moved into sixth place in the Eastern Conference playoff race, one-half game behind the Atlanta Hawks, while the Pacers saw their magic number to clinch the Central Divison title remain at eight.

QUOTABLE I: "It's just very tough to beat a team four times (in one season). Tonight (the difference) was their defense. They made it tough to score. We struggled to score all night."

THE STAT: The Pacers were limited to 17 points in the fourth period, when they bricked 16-of-20 field goal attempts. George wasn't a factor down the stretch partly because of foul trouble.

TURNING POINT: In the final seconds of the third period, Bulls guard Nate Robinson lost the ball in traffic at one end then dragged Pacers counterpart Lance Stephenson down from behind at the other. He was socked with a flagrant 2 foul and ejected from the game. The Pacers failed to cash in on a possible four- or five-point sequence, however, as the woozy Stephenson could only split two free throws, after which George missed a 3-point try. Then Cook drove the length of the court to give his team a 68-67 lead that it would protect the rest of the way.

QUOTABLE III: "The only way you can stop a guy is to do something like that, so (Robinson) probably had no choice. He was just playin' ball."

HOT: Bulls reserve forward Taj Gibson came to life in the fourth quarter, when he scored seven points, grabbed three rebounds and blocked one shot.

QUOTABLE IV: "I'm just trying to be myself again, flying all over the place and creating havoc on defense."

NOT: In the final quarter, George shot 1-of-6 in the field and 0-of-4 from beyond the arc.

GOOD MOVE: The Pacers were quick to take advantage of the absence of Noah in the middle. In the first quarter, Hibbert had eight points and one assist to establish an early tone.

QUOTABLE V: "(Noah) is not a guy you necessarily game-plan for, but obviously, any time you play against (the Bulls), he's the first guy you think about in terms of their No. 1 warrior. He leads them in their collective will and determination."

BAD MOVE: In the final minute, Bulls guard Kirk Hinrich committed an ill-advised foul that resulted in a four-point play and a three-point game. After Hinrich failed to convert a layup seconds later, George missed a pair of three-pointers, the first on which he was open in the deep left corner.

NOTABLE: The Pacers fell short in their bid to sweep the season series for the first time since the 2001-02 campaign. ... Noah had played some of his best ball of the season in recent weeks. In his last 10 games, he averaged 14.7 points and 12.4 rebounds and shot 58 percent in the field and 89 percent at the free throw line. ... In the last previous nine seasons, a Thibodeau-coached team ranked first or second in opponents field goal percentage in all except one of them. This season the Bulls (.432) rank seventh overall, while the Pacers (.414) lead the league.
