Jazz-Spurs Preview

It seemed like All-Star point guard Tony Parker was close to returning to the San Antonio Spurs' lineup. Turns out, he's ready to play.

After missing the last eight games with a sprained left ankle, Parker will be back earlier than expected Friday night as San Antonio tries to hand the slumping Utah Jazz their first eight-game road losing streak in eight seasons.

Out since March 1, Parker - the team leader with 21.0 points and 7.6 assists per game - went through a full practice on Tuesday and participated in a 5-on-5 scrimmage two days later. Gregg Popovich said after Thursday's session there was a chance Parker would return against the Jazz, and the team confirmed Friday morning that he'd be active and available.

"It just makes the game easier for us. He penetrates, finds us open shots on the floor and gets after it on defense as well," Kawhi Leonard said of Parker following Friday's shootaround.

The Spurs went 6-2 without Parker, and have won the first three on this four-game homestand after getting 25 points, 13 rebounds, six assists and four blocks from Tim Duncan in Wednesday's 104-93 victory over Golden State. Duncan is averaging 27.7 points, 14.7 rebounds and 3.3 blocks since sitting out a 107-83 loss at Minnesota on March 12 with a sore left knee.

"(My) body feels good and shots are going in," said Duncan, who is shooting 64.3 percent (36 for 56) over the last three games.

The Spurs' big man, three rebounds shy of passing Shaquille O'Neal for 13th all-time with 13,100, recorded a pair of double-doubles as San Antonio and Utah (34-34) split two earlier matchups this season, totaling 42 points, 32 rebounds and nine blocks. The last time these teams played, Duncan had 22 points, a season-best 21 boards and six blocks in a 99-96 loss in Salt Lake City on Dec. 12.

The Jazz certainly won't be happy to see Parker back on the floor. He's totaled 46 points and 17 assists in the two meetings and has scored at least 22 in his last four versus Utah.

The Spurs, 29-4 at home, have lost just twice in Utah's last 26 regular-season visits following their 110-100 victory on Nov. 3. That was the first time these teams played since San Antonio's first-round playoff sweep in 2012.

While the Spurs are trying to hold off second-place Oklahoma City for the top spot in the Southwest Division and the conference, Utah is fighting just to get into the playoff picture after falling three games back of seventh-place Houston with Wednesday's 100-93 loss to the Rockets.

The Jazz, losers of 10 of 13, are 1 1/2 games behind the Los Angeles Lakers for the eighth spot.

"We've slid and this is a tough loss for us, but we're still in the fight and we'll approach every game trying to contain and compete," said coach Ty Corbin, whose team hasn't lost eight straight outside Salt Lake City since March 4-April 6, 2005.

The Jazz need to do a better job of competing in the first half. They've been outscored by an average of 19.3 points in the opening 24 minutes of their last three road games.

"It's very frustrating (to fall behind), especially on the road," said Gordon Hayward, who's averaging 20.3 points and 6.0 boards starting the last three games after coming off the bench for his previous 45. "... We just can't let teams have those 5- (and) 10-minute pushes where they put up 17, 20, 25 points on us. It's unacceptable."

The Jazz have lost six of eight since Mo Williams returned from a lengthy injury absence (thumb), but the point guard has enjoyed some of his best moments of the season against the Spurs. He scored a season-high 29 points with nine assists in the November loss and hit the game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer that ended San Antonio's five-game winning streak on Dec. 12.

Including the postseason, the Spurs have won 29 of 31 at home versus the Jazz.

Parker returns and Spurs top Jazz 104-97 in OT

SAN ANTONIO (AP) The San Antonio Spurs were happy to have Tony Parker back, especially in overtime when the All-Star point guard returned to his role as the team's closer.

Parker had 22 points in his return from an eight-game absence, Tim Duncan added 19 points and 16 rebounds and the San Antonio Spurs escaped with a 104-97 overtime victory against the Utah Jazz on Friday night.

Amid cries of "MVP," Parker capped the scoring with a pair of free throws with 17.2 seconds left in overtime. He went 8 for 13 from the field and had five assists after missing eight games with a sprained left ankle. The Spurs were 6-2 in his absence, but struggled offensively.

"Tony was a little bit shy in the first half; he was just trying to feel his way a little bit," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "The game got tight at the end in regulation and then in overtime, and he was Tony Parker. Like I said, up until the time he got hurt, there wasn't a point guard in the league playing better than Tony Parker."

Parker had six points and two assists in overtime, including a cross-court pass to Kawhi Leonard for a 3-pointer to open overtime.

Leonard finished with 21 points, including five in overtime, and Danny Green had 15 points for San Antonio (53-16), which remains 2 1/2 games ahead of Oklahoma City in the West.

Mo Williams scored 23 points, Al Jefferson had 18 and Alec Burks 14 for Utah (34-35), which has lost three straight and dropped two games behind the Los Angeles Lakers for the West's final playoff berth.

"I can live with this," Jefferson said. "It is the end of the season and we cannot afford to lose one game. We played a tough team on their home floor and had a chance to win for the first time in a long time. The energy and the effort was there for all 48 minutes plus. If we continue to play the way we did tonight for the rest of these 12 games, we have a great chance."

Utah almost ruined what became a historic night for Duncan and Popovich.

Duncan's 29th double-double of the season gives him 13,113 career rebounds, moving him past Shaquille O'Neal (13,099) for 13th on the all-time list.

Popovich recorded his 900th career victory, becoming the 12th coach in NBA history to accomplish the feat and joining former Utah coach Jerry Sloan as the only coaches to do so with one team.

"(The ankle) feels good; it's more my cardio, my wind," Parker said. "I'm definitely (tired). It was a hard game; playoff intensity. Utah is definitely fighting hard to get that eight spot.

"It was big win for a lot of reasons. For Pop, No. 900; for Timmy passing Shaq; and me, I'm just happy to be back and hopefully we can keep it going now."

While Parker's return helped settle San Antonio late on offense, it was the team's defense that sealed the win.

The Spurs held the Jazz to 2-for-8 shooting in overtime after Marvin Williams' 3 at the buzzer tied the game at 90, drawing a heated tirade from Popovich for the defensive lapse. In the end, however, Popovich was happy with the outcome.

"I thought it was a great game," he said. "The guys fought hard. Utah's a team trying to stay in the playoffs and really highly motivated. We ground it out. We just ground it out and found some combinations that work well. A lot of people contributed to that. It was a hell of a win. It's one of our better wins this year for a lot of reasons."

Parker made his first attempt, drawing huge applause after hitting a 15-foot jumper 2 minutes into the game. He had only six points in the first half, going 3 for 6 from the field in 17 minutes.

"It's always tough, because you don't want to mess with the chemistry," Parker said. "They've been playing very good basketball at home. I was just trying to fit in. In the second half, Pop was calling plays for me. And being aggressive in the fourth quarter, so it came naturally."

The Spurs had a 12-0 run to take a 16-4 lead with 6:26 left in the first quarter. Tiago Splitter capped the run by tossing in a hook shot after missing an open layup off a bullet pass from Parker.

Parker sat shortly after that pass, sparking a 17-2 run by Utah to close the quarter. San Antonio went scoreless for almost 5 minutes bridging the first and second quarters.

Leonard also had six points in the first half before going 6 for 8 from the field in the second half and overtime, including 3 for 3 on 3s.

"Kawhi's a stud, he's not afraid to shoot the ball," Popovich said. "He knows that he's got license to play; we went to him a couple of times down the stretch in regulation and he came through."

NOTES: San Antonio's victory was its first in overtime against Utah after losing the previous three in series history. . Parker is the only player averaging at least 20 points and seven assists while shooting over 50 percent from the field and 80 percent on free throws. ... Popovich trails Don Nelson (1,335), Lenny Wilkens (1,332), Sloan (1,221), Pat Riley (1,210), Phil Jackson (1,155), George Karl (1,122), Larry Brown (1,098), Rich Adelman (994), Bill Fitch (944), Red Auerbach (938) and Dick Motta (935) in career victories. "It's funny, I played for Don Nelson when he broke the record and now I'm back with Pop," Stephen Jackson said. "I'm happy for Pop, he deserves it. I'm sure he's got plenty more to come. He pushed the (postgame celebration) cake in my face and it should have been his face. But I'm happy for him; I'm happy to be a part of it. I'm happy to say that I was able to be coached and play for coach Popovich." . Parker is the only active player averaging at least 15 points, five assists while shooting over 49 percent from the field for his career. The only other players to do that are Walt Frazier, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan and Kevin Johnson. ... With its victory Friday, San Antonio joins Miami (31) and Oklahoma City (30) as the only teams with 30 wins at home this season.

THE FACTS: Tony Parker returned from his eight-game absence because of an ankle injury, scoring 22 points to lead the San Antonio Spurs to a 104-97 overtime victory past the Utah Jazz on Friday at AT&T Center.

The Spurs (53-16) have won four in a row. It was the 900th career victory for coach Gregg Popovich, who became the 12th coach to reach that plateau.

The game went to overtime when Utah's Marvin Williams followed a pump fake with a corner 3-pointer that went in as the regulation buzzer sounded. Mo Williams led the Jazz (34-35) with 23 points, yet Utah shot 2-for-8 in the extra period and lost for the 11th time in 14 games to fall further out of the final playoff spot in the West.

QUOTABLE: "[The return from injury] was tough. I didn't want to mess up the chemistry. We've been playing really good basketball at home. I had to kind of fit in. In the second half [Popovich] was calling plays for me and [wanting me] to be aggressive. It came natural."

THE STAT: The Spurs shot 5-for-8 as a team in OT and made both 3-point attempts and both free throws.

TURNING POINT: Utah trailed by three when the Jazz got a defensive stop on Al Jefferson's block of Tiago Splitter with 2:17 to go. It still was anybody's ballgame, but the Jazz turned it over when a pass back to Randy Foye was low and Foye couldn't get a handle on it. The ball skittered away and Utah turned it over on a backcourt violation. Kawhi Leonard knocked down a 10-footer for the Spurs, who closed the game out by outscoring Utah 6-2 in the final two minutes.

QUOTABLE II: "We were playing a little out of desperation. We brought a lot of energy tonight. We just didn't make the plays down the stretch that we should have."

HOT: For all but 17 seconds, the Spurs stuck with Leonard, Duncan, Splitter, Parker and Manu Ginobili during overtime. Leonard and Parker combined to go 4-for-4 from the floor.

NOT: It's been eight games since Ginobili has shot 50 percent from the floor. Tonight he went 2-for-9, missed his first seven shots and didn't hit a shot from the floor until 1:44 to go. In the past seven games he's 25-for-79 (32 percent).

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Duncan scored 19 points and had 16 rebounds in 37 minutes. Over the past four games Duncan is averaging 25.5 points and 15 rebounds.

GOOD MOVE: Popovich didn't baby Parker this week. Parker participated in all the Spurs practices and was game-ready once Popovich decided it would be a go for Parker to return. Parker responded with almost 37 minutes and was able to play the entire overtime period.

BAD MOVE: The Jazz appeared unable to get into their offensive sets during overtime. Williams took three shots in OT, and all of them were from 3-point territory.

ROOKIE WATCH: Nando De Colo got most of the minutes available at backup point behind Parker. De Colo made one of his two shots from the floor and had three assists to one turnover in almost nine minutes of action.

NOTABLE: Duncan's 16 rebounds pushed him past Shaquille O'Neal and into 13th place all-time on the NBA career rebounding list. ... Only two other active NBA coaches have 900 wins, Rick Adelman and George Karl. ... This is the first eight-game road losing streak for Utah in eight seasons (April 2005), and this season they have not won away from Salt Lake City since Feb. 13.
