Trail Blazers-Hawks Preview

The Atlanta Hawks are intently focused on securing a top-four spot in the Eastern Conference, and they've helped themselves by winning four of their last five games.

The Hawks will try to add another victory by extending their recent success against the Portland Trail Blazers on Friday night.

Atlanta (38-30) stayed within two games of fourth-place Brooklyn with Wednesday's 98-90 victory over Milwaukee. The Hawks outscored the eighth-place Bucks 29-16 in the third quarter while bouncing back from a 127-113 loss to Dallas on Monday.

"This is definitely big," said guard Jeff Teague, who had a game-high 27 points and 11 assists. "We came out ready to play from the start. Guys made a consistent effort. We made plays at the end to finish off the victory.

"We're trying hard every day to get these wins. We know it's a rough hill to climb. Hopefully, we can continue to play well, get wins and get that fourth spot."

Al Horford provided his ninth double-double in 10 games with 26 points and 15 rebounds. He has helped Atlanta average 103.8 points on 50.4 percent shooting over its last five games.

The Hawks, scoring 97.6 per game and shooting 46.5 percent this season, are also making 41.9 percent of their 3-pointers during the recent surge.

"When we play with energy, we're a pretty fun basketball team to watch," coach Larry Drew said. "As I told the guys, it's not going to be easy from here on out. We have to understand that (our opponents) are going to play with more of a sense of urgency."

Atlanta will try to keep rolling by earning its eighth win in nine matchups against Portland, which has good reason to be an urgent team.

The Blazers (32-36) are tied for 10th in the West, 3 1/2 games behind the eighth-place Los Angeles Lakers.

Portland has put itself in a tough spot by dropping 14 of its last 17 on the road, but it earned a rare victory away from home 99-89 in Chicago on Thursday. LaMarcus Aldridge scored 28 points and Damian Lillard had 24.

"The energy was there. Everyone was focused on the game plan," forward Nicolas Batum said.

That didn't seem to be the case when the Blazers lost 95-87 at home to Atlanta on Nov. 12, getting outscored 10-0 over the final 2:49.

Teague and Horford had four points apiece during that stretch and were among five Atlanta players to finish in double figures. Portland's J.J. Hickson had 19 points and 18 rebounds in the loss.

The Blazers have dropped four straight visits to Atlanta, averaging 86.5 points in that stretch, and the Hawks have won five of their last seven home games overall.

Josh Smith, who had 12 points and 16 rebounds Wednesday against the Bucks, will be looking to record his seventh consecutive double-double versus Portland. He's averaged 16.3 points and 11.8 boards during that streak.

ATLANTA (AP) The Portland Trail Blazers credit improved defense for back-to-back road wins that have kept their playoff hopes alive.

The Atlanta Hawks say they must revive their defense to have any hopes of home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

Wesley Matthews scored 28 points to lead three Blazers with at least 20 points and Portland beat the Hawks 104-93 Friday night for their second road win in as many nights.

Damian Lillard scored 22 points and LaMarcus Aldridge had 20 points and 13 rebounds, giving him at least 20 points in seven straight games. Aldridge scored 28 points in the Blazers' 99-89 win at Chicago on Thursday night.

"We've been playing a lot better defense in the last two games," Lillard said.

The Hawks and Bulls are fifth and sixth, respectively, in the Eastern Conference standings. Atlanta trails fourth-place Brooklyn by 2 1/2 games in the race for home-court advantage in the first round.

"That was a quality road win against a very good playoff team," Blazers coach Terry Stotts said. "I was very pleased with our defense, particularly in the second half. With back-to-back wins like this on the road against Chicago and Atlanta, I'm very proud of my team."

The Blazers are 10th in the Western Conference, three games behind the eighth-place Lakers.

"We're going to keep on fighting until we're mathematically eliminated," Matthews said.

The Hawks led by 11 points in the third quarter before Matthews rallied the Trail Blazers.

"This team never quits playing, whether during a game or during the course of a season," Stotts said.

The Hawks completed a disappointing 1-2 homestand. Josh Smith led Atlanta with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Jeff Teague scored 21 points and Al Horford added 15 points with 11 rebounds.

The Blazers made 10 of 18 3-pointers, including five of eight by Matthews and four of five by Lillard. Nine of the 3-pointers came in the second half.

Hawks coach Larry Drew said that was proof his defense wasn't doing the job.

"That's breakdown. That's major, major breakdown," he said. "We've got to get back to that blue-collar mentality with our defense. We've got to get back to an almost training camp-like attitude."

Horford said the Hawks must regroup in their final 13 regular-season games.

"We just had too many defensive breakdowns," Horford said. "I told the guys we just have to figure out who we are and where we are at this point of the year.

"By this point of the year, I think we should know. Now we have these games that are remaining to put it together."

Drew said the Hawks have "turned into a team which is trying to outscore people" instead of making defensive stops.

"It is not who we are, not who we said we would be at the very beginning of our season," Drew said. "I thought our defense let us down. We did not do a good job. We had too many breakdowns across the board."

J.J. Hickson also posted a double-double for Portland with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Portland led 52-51 early in the third quarter before Smith's basket on a pass from Horford started a 15-3 run for the Hawks. Smith had two jams - each set up by Teague - in the run, which left the Hawks leading 66-55.

Stotts called two timeouts during Atlanta's run. The Blazers began their comeback following the second timeout with 5:26 remaining in the third period.

The Blazers' only points during Atlanta's run came on a 3-pointer by Matthews. The third-year guard from Marquette added a jumper and two more 3s in a stretch of 11 straight points for Portland, cutting the Hawks' lead to 76-73 at the end of the third period.

Portland went up 82-78 with a 9-0 run early in the final period. The Hawks came no closer than two points the rest of the way.

A steal and basket by Teague cut the Blazers' lead to 90-88. Portland responded with eight unanswered points, including a 3-pointer by Lillard, to stretch its lead to 98-88.

Kyle Korver's 3-pointer midway through the third quarter gave him at least one 3 in 62 consecutive games, tied with Peja Stojakovic (2008) for the fifth-longest streak in NBA history. It was his only 3-pointer of the game.

NOTES: Stotts was Atlanta's coach from 2002-04. ... The Blazers ended a streak of four straight losses in Atlanta. Portland's last win in Atlanta was on Jan. 21, 2008. ... THE FACTS: The Trail Blazers sure didn't seem to mind being delayed on their trip to Philips Arena Friday night, as Wesley Matthews scored 28 points, the Hawks imploded late and the Blazers won 104-93 win in Atlanta.

Portland (33-36) didn't get to the arena until about 90 minutes before the game Friday because a police chase in downtown Atlanta that involved multiple accidents mucked up traffic. The Blazers, though, played like a team that wants to work its way back into the playoff picture.

The game was 45-all at halftime before the Hawks (38-31), who are jostling for position in the middle of the Eastern Conference playoff race, looked to be pulling away to lead by 11 in the middle of the third. Then, the Blazers came to life and scorched the home team 49-27.

But, after Josh Smith dunked to give Atlanta a 66-55 lead with 5:26 left in the third quarter, the Blazers took over. Matthews scored eight of Portland's next 11 points, including two of his five 3-pointers.

Smith led Atlanta with 24 points, Jeff Teague added 21 and Al Horford had 15 points and 17 rebounds. Rookie point guard Damian Lillard added two of his four treys in the final 4:03 of the third, and all four of his long balls came between that point and the end of the game as he scored 22 points.

QUOTABLE: "We didn't even have a shootaround, and I didn't warm up at all. I didn't even eat until 15 minutes before the game. It just seemed like everything was stacked against us."

THE STAT: 81.8 percent -- the Blazers shot just 1-for-7 on 3-pointers in the first half, which ended 45-45. They shot 6-for-8 in the third quarter and 3-for-3 in the fourth (9-for-11, 81.8 percent).

TURNING POINT: Leading 76-73 to begin the final period, Atlanta scored first on Ivan Johnson's jumper, but the Blazers scored nine straight points -- the first six coming on back-to-back treys by Nicolas Batum and Lillard -- and never trailed nor were tied again.

QUOTABLE II: "It's crunch time. Guys know we have to throw this one away. We let a big game slide."

HOT: LaMarcus Aldridge carried the Blazers early with nine points and three rebounds in the first quarter. He finished with 20 points, 13 rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots and has scored at least 20 points in seven straight games. He also grabbed at least 10 rebounds in five of those games, and eight in the other. . . . Lillard (4-for-5) has shot 8-for-12 on 3-pointers in the past two games.

NOT: The Hawks missed all four of their 3-point tries in the fourth quarter, when they shot 6-for-18 overall and had four of their 11 turnovers. . . . Smith missed all four of his treys, and is 0-for-9 in the past three games.

BAD MOVE: Hawks coach Larry Drew has used 24 different starting lineups this season, and on Friday he went back to the same quintet that started when Atlanta won 95-87 on Nov. 12 in Portland -- largely because the Hawks won that game. It didn't work. DeShawn Stevenson, who has played sparingly of late, was 1-for-5 with three points, one rebound and no assists at shooting guard, and he had no luck checking Matthews.

ROOKIE REPORT: In 29-plus solid minutes, 7-foot-1 reserve center Meyers Leonard had four points but, more importantly, nine rebounds as Portland outrebounded Atlanta 48-41.

NOTABLE: Portland snapped a four-game losing streak in Atlanta. . . . J.J. Hickson's homecoming was successful. The Portland center, who attended Wheeler High School in northern metro Atlanta before playing one season at N.C. State, had 15 points and 10 rebounds one night after grabbing a career-high 21 rebounds in Chicago. . . . The Blazers closed the game with a 14-4 run.
