The Boston Celtics just gave away a great opportunity to keep pace in the Eastern Conference playoff race, but they're still well on their way to another postseason appearance.

The same can't be said of the Dallas Mavericks.

Boston will try to avoid a third straight loss Friday night when the Mavericks welcome back forward Shawn Marion and Celtics guard Jason Terry, who makes his return to Dallas after a long and successful run with the team.

Up by as many 13 points in the third quarter Wednesday, the Celtics (36-31) lost 87-86 at lowly New Orleans on a last-second tip-in by No. 1 overall pick Anthony Davis.

The meltdown didn't come as a major surprise to coach Doc Rivers.

"We started dancing around, stopped defending (starting late in the second quarter). You could see our guys laughing and joking," he said. "We don't learn because we have done this three or four times this year."

With 15 games left, the Celtics can't afford for this to continue if they're going to have any chance at a top-four spot in the East and home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

Boston is 3 1/2 games behind fourth-place Brooklyn and 1 1/2 back of fifth-place Atlanta. The Nets won 113-96 over Dallas (32-36) on Wednesday while the Hawks defeated Milwaukee 98-90.

The Celtics are also in contention for a sixth consecutive Atlantic Division title as they sit 4 1/2 games behind New York.

While Boston looks to improve its 2-10 road record against the West, the Mavericks are trying to get back into the win column after opening a season-high six-game homestand Wednesday.

Advancing to the postseason for a 13th consecutive season is in doubt as Dallas trails the eighth-place Los Angeles Lakers by 3 1/2 games.

The Mavericks, though, could get a boost - especially defensively and on the boards - with Marion, the team leader with 7.9 rebounds per game, expected to play after missing eight games with a strained left calf. Dallas went 5-3 with Marion sidelined and was outrebounded by an average of 12.3 in the losses.

"We definitely could have used some of his defense the last couple of games," forward Dirk Nowitzki told the Mavericks' official website. "Our defense has been terrible (giving up 107 or more in each of the last three games) and he's our best defender on the perimeter. .... So it's definitely going to be good to see him back."

The Mavericks also expect Terry to get a warm welcome after he signed with Boston in the offseason after spending eight years with Dallas, including its title run in 2010-11.

"Well, he'll get a great reception," coach Rick Carlisle said. "He's one of the most beloved players I think in the history of this franchise because of his personality, his relationship with the fans and the community and he was a great player."

Terry had 10 points the first time he faced his former teammates, a 117-115 double-overtime win Dec. 12. Paul Pierce scored 34 to help Boston snap a four-game skid in this series.

Nowitzki will face the Celtics for the first time in 2012-13 after missing the previous game with a knee injury. His 26.9 scoring average in 26 games versus Boston is his highest against any team.

Mavs beat Celtics, spoil Terry's return to Dallas

DALLAS (AP) Jason Terry's quiet fourth quarter was just about complete when Dallas center Brandan Wright waited near the basket for a lob pass from Shawn Marion.

Wright's forceful slam on the alley-oop capped his season-high 23-point game, Dirk Nowitzki pitched in 22 and the Mavericks spoiled Terry's return to Dallas with a 104-94 victory against the Boston Celtics on Friday night.

"It's his kind of game because there are a lot of small guys out there," Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said of Wright. "That's the reason we started him. He navigates well in an athletic game without a lot of bruisers in it."

Terry scored eight in his first game in Dallas since leaving for Boston in free agency. He was the latest key piece the Mavericks decided not to keep since beating Miami in the 2011 NBA finals.

Terry was known for 3-point shooting and clutch fourth quarters with the Mavericks, but he missed both 3-pointers for the game and was just 1 of 3 shooting without a try from long range in the final quarter.

He got a rousing ovation when he entered the game late in the first quarter, but it was brief because the game wasn't stopped. Vince Carter almost immediately hit a 3-pointer to force the fans to cheer for the Mavericks again.

"It was nothing out of the ordinary. It was a good feeling," Terry said. "But again, I was solely locked in on the game. It was good to see everyone. But I'm a Celtic now."

Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Brandon Bass led Boston with 16 points apiece. Garnett added 12 rebounds, and Bass grabbed 11.

The Mavericks kept their lead near the halftime margin of 11 until early in the fourth quarter, when Jordan Crawford hit a tough 3-pointer from the corner, then picked up a steal from Mike James near midcourt and made a reverse layup with Nowitzki in pursuit to pull Boston within six.

The Celtics had a chance to get within six again when Wright stripped Jeff Green on a drive, leading to a short jumper from Darren Collison for an 87-77 Dallas lead with 7:44 remaining.

"He was coming full speed and I knew that he wanted to get to the rim," Wright said. "He's one of the best attackers in the league. He exposed the ball and I just grabbed it and threw it back in. That was a big turnaround for us."

The Celtics were within five in the final 2 minutes when Wright rebounded a miss from Carter, and O.J. Mayo had all the time he needed to measure up a 3-pointer for a 100-92 lead while a Courtney Lee sat near him holding his sprained left ankle. Lee said after the game the injury wasn't serious.

One of Terry's misses in the fourth was a pull-up jumper that could have made it a six-point game.

"He didn't play great tonight," Boston coach Doc Rivers said. "He played with a lot of spirit. I love him, still. I wish we could have won the game for him tonight. I really do."

The Celtics were within six earlier in the fourth when Mayo hit a tough jumper with the shot clock expiring and Wright followed a miss with a dunk to push the lead to 10 again.

"Defensively right now, we're not getting it done," Terry said. "Give them credit, they spread us out. They used (Wright) to roll to the basket tonight and he played well."

Marion, back after missing eight games with a left calf strain, had 11 points and 13 rebounds for his 13th double-double of the season.

Dallas went 5-3 without him but missed his defense, particularly in giving up 113 points in each of the last two games he was out. The Mavericks held the Celtics to 42 percent shooting and limited Pierce and Kevin Garnett to just 19 shots combined. They had 10 more rebounds than Boston after giving up 22 boards to Reggie Evans and getting outrebounded by 11 in a loss to Brooklyn.

Marion had a rough start - his first shot was an airball on a wide-open 3-pointer - but he had seven rebounds in the first quarter and 10 before halftime.

"It was frustrating sitting on the sideline wishing I could be back out there," Marion said. "My timing is off a little, but it's OK."

The Celtics lost for the fifth time in seven games and slid closer to the No. 8 seed in the Eastern Conference, which would mean a likely first-round pairing with Miami. The Celtics have lost three straight, a skid that started with a loss to Miami when Boston let a 17-point lead slip away with a chance to end the Heat's winning streak at 22.

NOTES: Carlisle said G Rodrigue Beaubois was "probably" out for the season after surgery on a broken left hand, but wouldn't rule him out entirely. Beaubois was injured in Sunday's loss to Oklahoma City. ... Mayo is still Dallas' leading scorer, but he's been the top point man just twice in the past 20 games. He's been held to single digits three times this month. ... Green has 23 points combined in the two games since he scored a career-high 43 in Boston's loss to Miami. ... The Mavericks didn't trail in a game for the second time this season. The previous game was Jan. 14, a 113-98 win over Minnesota. ... Carlisle said the Mavericks were not going to sign G Chris Wright to a second 10-day contract.

THE FACTS: Brandan Wright crashed Jason Terry's homecoming party Friday and powered the Dallas Mavericks to a 104-94 defeat of the Boston Celtics at the American Airlines Center. Punctuating his breakout performance with a thunderous, alley-oop slam, Wright finished with a season-high 23 points and eight rebounds.

Dirk Nowitzki added 22 points, Vince Carter scored 19 off the bench and Shawn Marion delivered a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds in his return from an eight-game absence due to a strained left calf. The Mavericks (33-36) improved to 8-4 in the month of March.

Terry, who played eight seasons with Dallas from 2004-12 and is one of the most popular players in team history, received a standing ovation when he checked into the game in the first quarter. That was as good as it got for Terry, who tallied eight points on 3-for-9 shooting with three turnovers. Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Brandon Bass each scored 16 to lead the Celtics (36-32), losers of three straight and five of their last seven.

QUOTABLE: "It was just another game for me. Hall of Fame status or not, I respect him as a player. I go out there and play hard. I've got a little bit of game, too."

THE STAT: The Celtics are 2-11 on the road against the West.

TURNING POINT: For just the second time this season, the Mavericks never trailed (113-98 victory against Minnesota on Jan. 14 in Dallas). Boston whittled what had been a 14-point deficit to 97-92 with less than two minutes to play, but Wright kept the ensuing Dallas possession alive with his fifth offensive rebound and O.J. Mayo drained the 3-point dagger.

QUOTABLE II: "[The ovation] was a good feeling, but again, I was solely locked in on the game. It was good to see everyone again, but again, I'm a Celtic now."

HOT: The Celtics shot 92.6 percent (25-for-27) at the free-throw line. They were 17-for-17 during the first half.

NOT: In his two games since scoring 43 points in Monday's loss against Miami, Jeff Green has averaged 12.0 points. He committed five of Boston's 14 turnovers against the Mavericks. ... Carter was 1-for-7 from 3-point distance.

GOOD MOVE: Starting the long and athletic Wright was key to the Mavericks' success. It was his 13th start of the season, but his first since March 6 and just his second since Dec. 10.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Bass (11 rebounds) and Garnett (12 rebounds) both had double-doubles. Mayo had a game-high nine assists -- seven in the second half.

INSIDE THE ARENA: The Dallas crowd showed a lot of love for Terry, a member of the 2010-11 NBA championship team and the 2008-09 Sixth Man of the Year. He ranks second in Mavericks history in 3-point field goals (1,140), fifth in steals (735), sixth in points (9,953) and seventh in assists (2,524). Unfortunately for his fans, he was 0-for-2 from behind the arc and didn't get to break out his patented "Jet wings" celebration.

NOTABLE: Dallas is 9-4 at home against the East. ... The Mavericks are 21-4 when dishing 25 or more assists (26) and 20-8 when holding opponents under 100 points. ... Boston's Courtney Lee had to be carried to the bench with 1:21 left in the game after spraining his left ankle. Rivers said the injury did not appear to be serious. ... It was only the second 20-point game ever for Wright, who scored 25 for Golden State against Philadelphia on March 29, 2009. ... Dallas announced after the game that guard Chris Wright would not be signed to a second 10-day contract.
