Carmelo Anthony likely will be back for the New York Knicks, who will be happy to have their superstar replace another forward out due to injury.

Anthony is expected to return Wednesday night at home when the Knicks will be without Kurt Thomas as they look to complete their first season sweep of the Orlando Magic in 15 years.

Anthony has missed three straight games after having fluid drained from the back of his right knee, but he practiced before sitting out Monday's 90-83 victory at Utah. His return will provide a sorely needed boost to coach Mike Woodson's makeshift starting lineup that also includes Kenyon Martin, Iman Shumpert, Raymond Felton and Pablo Prigioni.

"I know how important this stretch run is for us, for me, for our whole organization," Anthony said. "I went out there and tried to play hurt, banged up, it didn't work. I was only hurting my teammates by going out there and trying to play, so I'm not rushing back. But tonight I feel good, I felt good the last couple of days, so I'm going to see what happens."

New York (39-26) avoided a season-high fifth straight loss with a makeshift lineup, and the 40-year-old Thomas was a catalyst with six points, three rebounds and a season-high three blocks in a season-best 27 minutes.

Thomas was playing with a bone spur in his right foot, and an exam on that foot revealed an acute stress reaction surrounding a chronic stress fracture. He will now miss up to four weeks.

The Knicks remain without All-Star center Tyson Chandler, who will be out a week with a bulging disc in his spine.

Chandler's absence Wednesday will be good news for Orlando (18-50). He is averaging 15.7 points on 87.0 percent shooting to go along with 8.3 rebounds to help the Knicks go 3-0 in the season series.

New York last swept Orlando when it won all four 1997-98 matchups.

Monday's win helped New York maintain its one-game Atlantic Division lead over Brooklyn. The Knicks lost the first four games of their trip by an average of 20.0 points.

"It's hard to win here, and to play a good team that's played well at home and be short-handed like we were, we stepped up," Woodson said.

This contest begins a critical three-game stretch against losing clubs for New York, which has a home-and-home set with Toronto this weekend. A 3-0 mark would give them momentum when Chandler hopefully would return for next week's back-to-back with Boston and Memphis.

"We just gotta get 'Melo and Tyson back in gear and get them going again and keep this thing going because we've still got a lot of basketball left," Woodson said.

J.R. Smith is averaging 23.3 points in this stretch without Anthony, with 29 foul shots - his highest total over a three-game stretch. He hit 24 of those free throws.

"That's what he has to do, when the jump shot's not falling, he has to attack," Martin said.

Orlando was held to season-low 31.8 percent shooting in its fourth straight loss, 95-73 at Indiana on Tuesday. Arron Afflalo and rookie Maurice Harkless were the only Magic players in double digits with 10 points apiece while coach Jacque Vaughn was ejected.

"Early on, I thought we looked good shooting but they didn't go in," Vaughn said. "Whether it was a putback, we had a dunk attempt or an open 3, it just didn't go in."

New York is averaging 22.0 points off turnovers against Orlando this season. It is also averaging 8.7 turnovers compared to the Magic's 15.0.

Jameer Nelson is averaging a team-high 25.0 points and 8.5 assists in two games against New York while Afflalo is averaging 21.0 points in two as well.

Anthony returns, scores 21 as Knicks beat Magic

NEW YORK (AP) Mike Woodson got the answer he was looking for just 22 seconds into the game.

That's how long it took Carmelo Anthony to show he was back, pulling up comfortably for a 3-pointer on New York's first possession.

"Big-time relief," the Knicks coach said. "I mean, lets me know that Melo's being Melo."

And the Knicks looked like the Knicks from earlier in the season, before Anthony's struggles halted their momentum.

Anthony scored 21 points after missing the previous three games with a knee injury, and the Knicks beat the Orlando Magic 106-94 on Wednesday night.

J.R. Smith had 22 points for New York, still short-handed in the frontcourt but looking much better with Anthony back. The NBA's second-leading scorer hadn't played since leaving the Knicks' road trip last week to have fluid drained from the back of his right knee. He said it felt better right after going to the hospital after he had been feeling discomfort for weeks.

"I feel good, I feel healthy," Anthony said. "I'm glad I went and got that procedure done so I put that behind me now."

He moved well and shot 7 of 14 while grabbing eight rebounds as the Knicks closed in on a playoff spot they could wrap up this week.

"Any time you have a great scorer like that, it's going to be tough for you. Not one person in the league, in the world can guard him 1-on-1," Magic guard Jameer Nelson said. "So you've got to do different things and try to get him out of his rhythm. I thought he did a great job by being patient and taking shots when he wanted to or needed to, and passing it when the double-team came."

The Knicks shot 53 percent and won their second straight after dropping the first four games of their five-game trip. All-Star center Tyson Chandler is expected to miss about a week with a bulging disk, and reserve forwards Amare Stoudemire, Rasheed Wallace and Kurt Thomas all could miss the rest of the regular season. But New York had no trouble despite using a small lineup that featured 6-foot-9 Kenyon Martin as the center.

Iman Shumpert, who joined Anthony, Martin, Raymond Felton and Pablo Prigioni in the lineup, sat out after hurting his knee late in the first half. He said he was scared after hearing a pop, having torn up his knee last spring, but trainers told him it was likely scar tissue. He sat on the bench in uniform and Woodson said he could have returned, but kept him out as the Knicks blew it open.

Tobias Harris and Andrew Nicholson each scored 14 points for the Magic in their fifth straight loss. They played without center Nikola Vucevic because of an illness in the second night of a difficult back-to-back, after falling by 22 at Indiana on Tuesday.

New York beat Orlando for the sixth straight time and swept the season series for the first time since 1997-98.

Anthony said he was feeling pain just before the All-Star break, more than a month ago. The knee became worse when the Knicks had games on back-to-back nights against Miami and Cleveland on March 3-4, and he fell to the court without contact while trying to catch a pass in the second game.

He missed the next three games, then came back. But he was clearly limited in losses at Golden State and Denver, totaling just 23 points, and he finally realized the knee needed more than just rest.

"I was worried because I didn't really know what was the cause of it, what was going on," he said. "I knew for sure that it wasn't no ligament damage or anything like that, so I just wish that I could have gotten to the bottom of it quicker or we could've got to the bottom of it quicker."

He had rejoined the team on the West Coast following the procedure but didn't want to rush back, and determined he was ready Wednesday after feeling good over the last couple of days.

New York built a 22-7 lead after consecutive 3-pointers by Smith and Chris Copeland capped a 10-0 run. They led 26-15 after one, but Orlando got untracked with a 31-point second quarter, cutting it to 51-46 at the half.

The Knicks put it away midway through the third, getting two free throws and a follow shot by Anthony to start a 10-2 burst that extended a 10-point lead to 78-60.

"I think they're the hardest team to defend in the NBA. With Melo and his ability to score and play the 4 and then with four shooters all around him, it's hard to help out and get back. You saw tonight they made a lot of 3s," Harris said. "They're definitely a tough match-up team and that's what makes them so good."

NOTES: Woodson said he didn't expect the Knicks to make any moves to fortify the frontcourt because Wallace and Thomas could be back around the start of the playoffs. And he said he still "absolutely" believes in the Knicks' decision to load up on older players over the summer, believing the injuries happened because the veterans played more minutes than expected because of injuries to other players. ... Thomas said he'd had a stress fracture in his foot in 2006 while playing for Phoenix and had learned recently it didn't completely heal. ... The Knicks wished director and leading fan Spike Lee a happy birthday between the first and second quarters. ... Magic coach Jacque Vaughn was ejected from Tuesday's game and said he didn't want to discuss his feelings about Indiana's physical play for fear of losing more money, smiling that his wife was mad about the fines that come with the two technical fouls he received during the loss to the Pacers.

THE FACTS: Carmelo Anthony returned to the lineup after a three-game hiatus due to a knee ailment and notched 21 points and eight rebounds as the Knicks won their second straight, beating the Orlando Magic 106-94 Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden.

J.R. Smith added 22 points off the bench on a night in which everything wasn't rosy for New York (40-26), though. The Knicks, who are already without four injured frontcourt players, got more bad injury news when Iman Shumpert, who started at small forward, tweaked his surgically-repaired left knee and did not play the second half. He finished with seven points in 14 minutes.

The young Magic (18-51) feature four New York natives and several played well. Tobias Harris scored 14 points, Kyle O'Quinn had 12 points and 14 rebounds and Moe Harkless added 11 points and six boards. The Magic were without Nikola Vucevic (illness).

QUOTABLE: "It feels good [to have Anthony back]. "He's our leader and we need him. We're just waiting on a few more guys to get back and we'll be alright."

THE STAT: The Knicks went 15-for-34 (44 percent) from the arc, with Anthony going 3-for-5. The Magic shot 5-for-17 (29 percent).

TURNING POINT: After Orlando closed to within 51-46 at the half, the Knicks outscored them 32-19 in the third to take a commanding 83-65 lead after three. Anthony and Smith scored seven points apiece in the third.

HOT: In his first start at MSG for the Magic, Harris, a Long Island native, went for 14 points on 7-for-10 shooting. A second-year forward obtained from Milwaukee, Harris entered averaging 14.1 points and 9.0 rebounds in his last five starts for the Magic.

NOT: Jameer Nelson went 2-for-7 for six points for the Magic.

NOTABLE: Tyson Chandler remains out for what Woodson called "a few games" with a small bulging disc. Amar'e Stoudemire and Rasheed Wallace are down for extended periods with injuries, and Kurt Thomas is out 2-4 weeks with a stress reaction in his right foot. Without all those bigs, Woodson started Kenyon Martin alongside Anthony and Shumpert in the frontcourt, with Pablo Prigioni and Raymond Felton in the backcourt. The Knicks recently signed Martin for the rest of the season and Woodson said "Somebody would've picked him up for the playoff run. ... Kenyon's a nice piece so we just gotta keep him healthy so he can help us." Woodson said he and GM Glen Grunwald don't have any moves planned. "Our team as it stands today is what it is," he said. "We have to try to get Kurt and Rasheed back [for the playoffs]."
