This has been a more than miserable road trip for the New York Knicks. At least it's one game from being over.

With their Atlantic Division lead dwindling, the injury-riddled Knicks will try to salvage the finale Monday night against the Utah Jazz.

New York (38-26) hasn't been able to offer much resistance in losing the first four games of the trip, averaging only 81.8 points - 17 below its season average - with each defeat by at least 13 points.

That lack of offense isn't a surprise with Carmelo Anthony playing one full game on the swing before he left Wednesday's 23-point loss at Denver in the third quarter with a knee injury. Fellow All-Star Tyson Chandler bruised his left knee in that game and also has sat out the past two games.

The four-game skid matches the team's season high and has allowed Brooklyn to climb within one game of the Atlantic lead.

"We're all professionals, and sometimes you're going to play short-handed, so you've got to compete," Jason Kidd said. "The biggest concern is just our health. We've got to get healthy first and go from there. But there's no guarantee those guys are going to come back, so we've got to play with the guys we have."

Missing the NBA's second-leading scorer in Anthony and seventh-best rebounder in Chandler again was too much for the Knicks to overcome in Sunday's 93-80 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers. J.R. Smith led the way with 17 points but shot 4 of 20 as part of New York's 38.8 percent effort from the field. Kenyon Martin and Kurt Thomas, both forced into the starting lineup due to all the injuries, combined for 14 rebounds but totaled six points on 3-of-11 shooting.

New York also is still without Amare Stoudemire, who will be sidelined at least six more weeks after recently undergoing surgery on his right knee.

"We know we're a few men down and we can make excuses, but we're not going to make excuses, man," Martin said. "Guys have pride. We're going to compete every night, no matter who's playing for us. It's tough."

Smith is clearly the team's best offensive option without Anthony, but he continues to be wildly inconsistent. He scored 33 points in Thursday's loss to Portland after totaling 24 on 8-of-23 shooting in the trip's first two games.

Now the Knicks face the Jazz (34-32), the last team they beat. Smith scored 24 points and reserve Steve Novak had a season-high 20 in a 113-84 rout March 9 that completed Utah's 0-4 trip.

That was New York's third straight win in the series, but it has lost five in a row in Utah since a 73-62 victory Nov. 14, 2005.

The Jazz have bounced back to win two of three - both at home - since losing in New York and continue to battle the Los Angeles Lakers for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Gordon Hayward led five players in double figures with 17 points in his first start since November, helping Utah to a 90-84 victory over Memphis on Saturday. Mo Williams had 13 points and six assists in his sixth game since missing 32 with torn ligaments in his shooting hand.

"We got to grit and grind," Williams said. "I can steal that from Memphis because we are a replica of them."

Saturday's win was Utah's first against a team with a winning record since beating Golden State on Feb. 19.

Smith lifts short-handed Knicks past Jazz, 90-83

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Kurt Thomas wasn't sure he would even play Monday night after X-rays showed a bone spur in his right foot.

The New York Knicks veteran forward not only played, he earned a game ball for a gutsy, 27-minute effort that included six points, three rebounds and a season-high three blocks in a 90-83 victory over the Utah Jazz.

"Our defense really shined tonight, especially in the second half," Knicks coach Mike Woodson said of holding Utah to 28.9 percent shooting after halftime. "Everybody just seemed to make plays defensively when we needed to make stops. And then we made big shots when we had to have it."

J.R. Smith scored 20 points, including 18 in the second half, and Raymond Felton had 19 for the short-handed Knicks, who snapped a four-game losing streak.

The Knicks (39-26) dropped games at Golden State, Denver, Portland and the Los Angeles Clippers by an average margin of 20 points, but salvaged the last game of their trip with the victory over the turnover-prone Jazz (38-27).

"It's going to be a nice ride home," Woodson added. "We have been struggling out here on the road and to win at this altitude and this environment means we were hungry."

New York remains atop the Atlantic Division and stayed a game ahead of the Nets for the No. 3 spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

New York was without leading scorer Carmelo Anthony, who practiced earlier Monday and indicated his right knee feels better since he had fluid drained. New York also remained without center Tyson Chandler, bothered by a strained neck muscle, and forward Amare Stoudemire, who recently underwent knee surgery.

Thomas was a game-time decision, and is expected to undergo an MRI when the team returns to New York on Tuesday. But the 40-year-old provided a big spark off the bench.

"Kurt was a true warrior," Smith said. "To fight through what he's been feeling all week and ... do that kind of job on the defensive end and make shots, they don't make that breed no more."

Thomas said he was just waiting for his number to be called.

"You stay ready and do what you know you can do," he said.

The effort surprised even Woodson.

"He hadn't played 26 minutes maybe all year and we didn't even know if he was going to play tonight. It was a total team effort but Kurt deserved the game ball tonight," Woodson said.

Afterward, Felton wasn't immediately available because he was icing his sore back. And Jason Kidd was nursing a sore left wrist, though X-rays taken immediately after the game were negative.

The hurt put on the Jazz, fresh off a big win over Memphis on Saturday, was worse.

"We played hard, we competed, we just fell a little short," said Gordon Hayward, who led Utah with 17 points and a career-high four blocks. "That was a tough one to lose."

Paul Millsap added 12 points and Al Jefferson 10, but they were a combined 8 of 22. Overall the Jazz shot 38 percent, scored a season-low 22 points in the paint and missed eight of their last nine shots.

"They did a good job of keeping one or two bodies on Paul at all times," Marvin Williams said. "Every time he got the ball they never really gave him a chance to get comfortable."

Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin said New York took the Jazz out of their game despite Utah's size advantage.

"They were the aggressors tonight," he said.

Credit Smith, who had just two points at halftime on 1-of-6 shooting but got in the lane and to the line, making nine of 10 free throws and a 20-footer with 2:36 remaining that sealed the win as the Jazz went cold.

Smith, who helped the Knicks beat up on the Jazz on March 9 right after they learned Stoudemire had been lost, scored 10 points in the third quarter as the Knicks took a 66-63 lead.

With so many big men out or hurting, Woodson opted for a smaller lineup, one he thought would boost the tempo and offset Utah's front-court advantage. Rookie guard Pablo Prigioni made his first NBA start, finishing within three points, three assists and two rebounds.

Smith didn't start but finished strong, with eight points in the fourth quarter.

Both teams had plenty to play for Monday, the Knicks trying to save face after their skid and the Jazz entering the night a game behind the Lakers for the eighth and final Western Conference spot.

The game was sloppy as they get early, with 24 turnovers in the first half, including 14 by the Jazz leading to 21 Knicks points.

"It's been a rough stretch for us on this road trip, a lot of guys in and out of the lineup," Thomas said. "We kept our heads up."

NOTES: The early highlight for Utah was a powerful dunk by Williams. ... The Jazz held a 22-13 rebounding edge in the first half, with eight in 10 minutes by Derrick Favors. ... THE FACTS: Without their leading scorer, top rebounder and best defensive player -- and at the end of a brutal five-game road trip -- the New York Knicks played with some urgency on Monday night. And that proved to be one of the factors that propelled the Knicks to a 90-83 victory over the Utah Jazz on Monday night. New York (39-26), without Carmelo Anthony and Tyson Chandler, earned its only victory of a five-game road trip.

J.R. Smith scored 20 points off the bench, and Raymond Felton added 19 as New York earned a season sweep over Utah (34-33). The Knicks' four-game losing streak was book-ended by wins over the Jazz.

The Jazz, who blew a chance to pull even with the Los Angeles Lakers for the final Western Conference playoff spot, were led by Gordon Hayward. He had 17 points and a career-high four blocked shots.

QUOTABLE: "It's been a rough stretch for us on this road trip; a lot of guys in and out of the lineup. We kept our heads up. We're still a very confident team, but wins definitely help make you feel a lot better."

THE STAT: New York's defense was outstanding in the second half, holding the Jazz to 28.9 percent shooting after halftime. The Knicks held Utah to just five field goals and 23.8 percent shooting in the third quarter. New York's defense was at its tightest during the game's most important stretch as the Jazz missed 9 of their last 10 shots. The only made basket was a meaningless layup by Paul Millsap with 7.2 seconds remaining.

TURNING POINT: The Knicks took control with a 12-1 run late in the third quarter. Smith did most of the work, making four free throws and throwing down a lob from Felton on a fast break. He also hit a running bank shot. Jason Kidd helped out with a long jumper and Felton capped the spurt with a runner to put the Knicks up 66-61 with 29.7 seconds left in the third quarter. The run was just what New York needed as it maintained its lead throughout the fourth quarter.

HOT: Thomas put together an inspiring performance for the Knicks. The 40-year-old reserve center got an X-ray and some treatment on his sprained foot before the game. Thomas noticeably hobbled up and down the court at times, but he was effective at boxing out and setting screens. On several possessions, he set multiple screens that helped New York's shooters get good looks at the basket. He played a season-high 27 minutes and had six points, three rebounds and three blocked shots. Smith was New York's catalyst on offense after halftime. He attacked and got to the free-throw line after the break. He shot 9-for-10 from the free-throw line, 4-for-7 from the field and scored 18 of his 20 points in the second half.

NOT: Derrick Favors' offensive limitations were on full display against the Knicks. He shot 1-for-7 from the field and 5-for-12 from the free-throw line. He finished with just seven points, but did have 13 rebounds. Al Jefferson and Mo Williams let the Jazz down with their subpar offensive outings. Jefferson shot 2-for-10 and Williams was 2-for-12 in the second half. Jefferson finished with 10 points and Williams had nine.

QUOTABLE II: "I gave him the game ball after the game. I mean, he deserved it. He hadn't played 26 minutes maybe all year and we really didn't even know if he was going to play tonight. He had three big blocks. It was a total team effort, but Kurt deserved the game ball tonight."

GOOD MOVE: The Knicks knew exactly how to exploit Utah's defense -- with the pick-and-roll. New York went right at the Jazz, especially in the first half against Jefferson, and built an early lead to take the crowd out of the game. Rookie Chris Copeland did much of the damage, using his athleticism in pick-and-roll plays to score 14 points.

BAD MOVE: Utah's offense was in disarray. Against a Knicks team missing Chandler and featuring a front line of Kenyon Martin, Thomas and Steve Novak, the Jazz failed to score near the basket. Utah scored a season-low 22 points in the paint because they didn't play inside-out. The Jazz settled for long jumpers early in possessions -- and missed a lot of them. Utah had no identity and no flow on offense against the Knicks, and it resulted in scoring its fewest points of the season. Williams is supposed to be the facilitator for Utah, but he was the team's biggest culprit of shooting early in the shot clock and playing sloppily.

NOTABLE: The Jazz have scored fewer than 90 points in four of their last six games. In the other two games they've scored exactly 90 points. Utah has scored a season-low 83 points three times: in a road win over Washington, a home loss to Golden State and against New York on Monday night. ... Kidd, who had seven points and five assists, had his right hand wrapped in ice and was getting treatment for it after the game. ... The Knicks have defeated the Jazz four straight times.
