Timberwolves-Grizzlies Preview

The Memphis Grizzlies didn't end their road trip the way they would've liked, but returning home for a matchup with the Minnesota Timberwolves might be what they need to get back on track.

Memphis looks to win its eighth consecutive home game by earning a 10th straight victory over Minnesota on Monday night.

The Grizzlies (44-21) had won 14 of 15 and the first two of a four-game road trip before back-to-back to defeats to Denver on Friday and Utah on Saturday.

Jerryd Bayless scored 24 points off the bench while Zach Randolph added 19 and nine rebounds Saturday for Memphis, which shot just 38.9 percent over the two defeats.

"It's tough, but we have another game on Monday where we will be able to bounce back," said Bayless, who totaled 22 points and shot 28.6 percent over his previous three games. "We wish we could have won, but at the same time it wasn't a bad road trip."

The Grizzlies, who rank among the league leaders forcing 15.6 turnovers per game, forced a season-low six giveaways Saturday.

"That was a tough loss," coach Lionel Hollins said. "They played with a lot of energy and we just didn't play smart down the stretch."

Memphis, though, returns to the FedEx Forum where it has won seven straight and has held 32 of its 33 opponents to fewer than 100 points. It leads the NBA allowing only 89.4 points per game, and opponents during its home winning streak are shooting just 44.6 percent.

The Grizzlies have held the Timberwolves to an average of 86.8 points during their nine-game winning streak in the series, giving up more than 90 only once.

Minnesota is shooting a dismal 40.5 percent during that skid, but it hit 56.3 percent from the field - its second-best mark of the season - in Sunday's 97-95 home win over New Orleans.

Derrick Williams scored a career-high 28 points and Nikola Pekovic added 13 after missing the previous eight games with an abdominal strain. His two free throws with 15 seconds left put the Timberwolves (23-41) ahead to stay.

Williams is averaging 18.7 points over his last 12 games and is hitting 51.0 percent from the field in his past four. He was averaging 10.0 points and shooting 41.0 percent prior to his current run.

"I really feel like I'm getting a lot of my confidence back," Williams said. "Not just shooting, just overall. A lot of people have a lot of faith in me as well."

Andrei Kirilenko returned from a nine-game absence and blocked a potential game-tying shot with less than five seconds remaining. His and Pekovic's return helped a Minnesota team already missing Kevin Love due to a broken hand.

"We had energy at the end and that helped when we have more bodies," said Ricky Rubio, who finished with 16 points and six assists. "We can be more aggressive and we don't run out of energy in the last quarter."

The Timberwolves haven't won two straight since a season-best four-game winning streak from Dec. 7-15, and they'll likely have a tough time accomplishing the feat Monday.

Minnesota hasn't beaten the Grizzlies since Feb. 6, 2010, and its last victory in Memphis was Jan. 6, 2009.

Williams is averaging 8.8 points and shooting 34.8 percent in five career games against the Wolves.

Conley leads Grizzlies past Timberwolves, 92-77

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) The Memphis Grizzlies let the baggage from a four-game road trip linger only slightly before turning up the defense to snap their losing streak.

The Grizzlies, returning home from a four-game West Coast swing last week during which they lost the final two, got 20 points and six assists from Mike Conley in a 92-77 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday night.

For the Grizzlies, it was a nice homecoming after losing at Denver on Friday and Utah on Saturday. Early against the Timberwolves, there seemed to be a lack of intensity lingering from the trip, but it was short-lived.

"It kind of happens after a long road trip," said Grizzlies center Marc Gasol, who finished with 16 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four blocks. "The first quarter is always a little weird. . But we reacted pretty good. We weren't clicking offensively like we want to. We were not making the shots we normally make, but defensively, I think we picked it up real well."

Conley was 8 of 14 from the field and connected on 3 of 6 from beyond the arc to help Memphis earn its 10th straight win in the series. Jerryd Bayless added 15 points, and Zach Randolph had 14 points and 10 rebounds. Tayshaun Prince scored 12 points and grabbed a season-high 14 rebounds.

Alexey Shved led the Timberwolves with 12 points, and Mickael Gelabale and J.J. Barea finished with 11 apiece. The Timberwolves' reserves scored 44 points as no Minnesota starter finished in double figures.

Timberwolves guard Ricky Rubio left the game after coming down awkwardly on a fast break with about 3 minutes left in the third quarter. He went to the locker room briefly with a minor groin strain. He was available, but did not return to the game. He finished with two points and two assists.

"He said he could have played, but I wasn't going to put him back in there," Minnesota coach Rick Adelman said. "It wasn't worth it."

Minnesota, which defeated New Orleans 97-95 on Sunday, shot 34 percent and was outscored 50-28 in the paint.

"We just played very poorly offensively and never really gave ourselves a chance to win," Adelman said. "We shot low 30 percent and didn't move the ball very well. I don't know if it's as much to do with them as it is to do with ourselves.

"I did think we ran out of gas. At the start of the third quarter, it was like we had nothing left."

Memphis, as it has for about the last 10 games, pulled away with a quick start in the third quarter. The Grizzlies opened the period with nine straight points to start a 13-2 run that gave them their largest lead to that point at 58-41.

Minnesota managed to convert only one of its first nine attempts, while Memphis connected on six straight.

The Grizzlies' lead continued to swell, reaching 20 near the midway point of the period.

The Grizzlies outscored Minnesota 29-14 in the quarter, upping their lead to as many as 25 points. Memphis hit 13 of 19 shots, while the Timberwolves were 4 of 21.

"We were playing good in the first half," Rubio said, "but they were coming out more aggressive in the third quarter than we were."

Minnesota center Nikola Pekovic added that while they played pretty well in the first half, "the first 6 or 7 minutes of the third quarter, they just jumped on us, and we never really responded the right way."

The Timberwolves would not have a player reach double figures until Shved's 3-point play with 10:03 to play in the game.

That cut the Grizzlies' lead to 79-63, but the Timberwolves would never threaten the rest of the way.

"We came out slow in the first quarter," Memphis coach Lionel Hollins said. "We were dragging a little bit, but then we got it going. We actually played pretty good."

The Grizzlies led 45-39 at the break behind 11 points from Gasol. Derrick Williams and Pekovic had eight points each for the Timberwolves.

Neither team shot particularly well, Memphis doing best with 44 percent, but the Grizzlies converted only one of six shots from outside the arc.

Minnesota was 4 of 13 from outside in the half.

NOTES: Minnesota has not won consecutive games since a four-game winning streak in December. ... Memphis F Darrell Arthur missed his eighth game with neck and back soreness. ... Conley recorded a steal in the first quarter and now has 57 straight games with a steal. His two steals in the game gave him 146 for the season, a franchise record. ... Minnesota's road record now is 7-26, including eight consecutive losses away from home. ... Gelabale had seven rebounds matching his season-best.

THE FACTS: The Memphis Grizzlies looked like a team fresh off a four-game road trip early on against Minnesota, but once they got their bearings, the Grizzlies used their usually stingy defense and balanced offensive attack to put away the Timberwolves, 92-77, Monday night at FedExForum. The Grizzlies have five players score in double figures, led by Mike Conley's 20 points, as they snapped a two-game slide. The Timberwolves were led by Alexey Shved's 12 points off the bench.

QUOTABLE: "We're trying to build something special. I don't know if we can do it or not, but we've got to work toward it. And that's to contend for a championship. Play all the good teams and beat them wherever you can play them. It's important to build on that every day. Every day you come to the gym, you've got to work hard. You've got to do what you do every day."

THE STAT: The Grizzlies have now beaten Minnesota 10 consecutive times, their longest winning streak against an opponent in franchise history. The two teams will meet once more, March 30 in Minneapolis.

TURNING POINT: It wasn't until late in the second quarter that the Grizzlies finally got their offense going as they used a 10-5 run to close the half with a 45-39 lead. That run carried over into the third quarter when the Grizzlies were able to take complete control thanks to a 9-0 run to start the quarter that was part of an 18-4 spurt that put the Grizzlies up, 63-43.

HOT: After a couple of tough shooting nights at Denver and Utah, both losses by the Grizzlies, point guard Mike Conley regained his shooting touch. Conley was 8 of 13 from the floor to lead all scorers with 20 points. He also had six assists and two steals, which enabled him to set a club record for most steals in a season. Conley now has 146, breaking his former record of 144.

NOT: As a team, the Timberwolves shot just 33.7 percent from the floor and no player scored more than 12 points. No starter managed to reach double figures as they shot a combined 13 for 43 (.302) from the floor.

QUOTABLE II: "Tonight, we needed to come out with a lot of energy. We did in the first half, but in the second half -- the first six to seven minutes of the third quarter -- they just jumped on us and we never really responded the right way."

NOTABLE: Minnesota guard Ricky Rubio hobbled off the court during a timeout with 3:34 left in the third quarter and didn't return. Coach Rick Adelman said he didn't know what Rubio's injury was, but that he could have returned had the game been closer. Rubio finished with just two points, that being on the first basket of the game. ... The Grizzlies are now 45-21, tying them for the fourth-most wins in a season in franchise history. The club record is 50 wins. With 16 games remaining, that's a record that should be shattered. ... The Timberwolves have lost eight straight road games, falling to 7-26 on the road. They have lost 16 of their last 17 road games. ... Grizzlies' forward Tayshaun Prince had his second double-double of the season with 12 points and 14 rebounds.
