Exactly five years to the day when the Boston Celtics stopped the second-longest winning streak in NBA history, they can make sure the Miami Heat don't take it all for themselves.

The Heat would have to do it by becoming the first visiting team in nearly two months to win in Boston - the only Eastern Conference city where they have no regular-season victories during the LeBron James era.

All of those facts provide even more intrigue to a game which would be extremely significant regardless of the opponent or location because Miami is seeking a 23rd consecutive victory Monday night.

"If there's any group that would be motivated in a circumstance like this, it's that team in green," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "I don't know if the streak will be a big factor but they love playing against us, and vice versa."

Spoelstra's squad now must play on the road for a second straight day, having stretched its win streak to 22 with a 108-91 victory in Toronto on Sunday afternoon. That matched the 2007-08 Houston Rockets for No. 2 on the NBA's list of top winning streaks, shy of only the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers' run of 33.

"It's a special ride right now that we're on," James said. "The best thing about it is we're doing it together."

Houston's streak of 22 straight victories ended March 18, 2008, with a 94-74 home loss to the Celtics.

Miami's run began five days after a 100-98 double-overtime loss in Boston on Jan. 27, the same day the Celtics (36-29) learned Rajon Rondo was out for the season with a torn ACL. Shockingly, they've won all 11 of their games in Boston since losing Rondo, recording the team's longest single-season home winning streak since 2008-09.

"We just feel like this is a building we should never lose in," said Paul Pierce, whose Celtics are 24-9 at home. "Teams coming to the Garden, they've got to know that this is going to be their toughest game of the year. That's the feeling and the swagger that we're bringing."

This home win streak began with that thriller against the Heat (51-14), who have averaged a paltry 79.6 points in going 0-5 at Boston during the regular season since James joined the team. Miami, though, is 2-3 there in the playoffs over the past two years, including a Game 6 win in the 2012 Eastern Conference finals when the Celtics had a chance to close out the series.

The Heat also knocked them out in the conference semifinals a year earlier, but Boston has won 12 of the past 15 regular-season meetings. That includes a 7-3 record since James joined this rivalry, though the Celtics did lose 120-107 in Miami to open the season.

"We've got to know we're going to have a dog fight on our hands," said Dwyane Wade, who had 17 points on 6-of-20 shooting with six turnovers in the Jan. 27 loss at Boston.

James had a season-best 16 rebounds in that game and scored 34 points, but he took a season-high 31 field-goal attempts and missed a potential go-ahead 12-footer with less than seven seconds left in the second OT.

Kevin Garnett keyed the win with 24 points and 11 rebounds but could miss this matchup due to a strained muscle in his left thigh. He sat out Saturday's 105-88 win over Charlotte - just the second game he's missed all season - and coach Doc Rivers told the team's official website that Garnett is "50-50 at best" to play Monday.

"It's just a point of the year where you're just not going to play him if he's not feeling great," Rivers said.

Pierce should be well-rested, having played less than 24 minutes in each of the past two games after being given a night off Tuesday against the Bobcats. He had a triple-double in the last meeting with Miami and scored 23 points in the first one.

Heat beat Boston 105-103 for 23d win in a row

BOSTON (AP) LeBron James and the Miami Heat escaped Boston with their 23rd win in a row. All that's in front of them now is the NBA record for consecutive victories.

Five years to the day after the Celtics snapped Houston's winning streak at 22 games, James scored 37 points and made the go-ahead basket with 10.5 seconds left in Miami's 105-103 victory on Monday night.

After overcoming the largest deficit they've faced during their streak, the only team left for the Heat to catch is the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers, who won 33 in a row.

"It means a lot," James said. "I know the history of the game. To be sitting in second place right now ... for us to be there and doing it the way we want to do it, it means a lot."

Jeff Green scored a career-high 43 points for Boston, which was without Kevin Garnett for the second straight game. Paul Pierce had 17 points, eight rebounds and eight assists for the Celtics, but he missed a 3-pointer with 3 seconds left that could have given Boston the win.

Instead, the defending NBA champions won a regular-season game in Boston for the first time in 11 tries.

"This was a passionate game, a lot of history between the two teams," said Miami forward Shane Battier, who played for the Rockets when their 22-game win streak ended on March 18, 2008, and was with the Heat when they knocked Boston out of the playoffs in each of the last two seasons. "Not that it's playoff intensity ... nothing's like the playoffs."

James added 12 assists and Mario Chalmers scored 21 for Miami, which has not lost since Feb. 1.

"It's a special opportunity that we have with this group and you don't want to take it for granted," coach Erik Spoelstra said. "You want to treat every day as a special opportunity to be with this group, to share these moments together, but more importantly to take a step closer to going after our goal and every day that we improve puts us in a better position in a quest where nothing is guaranteed for anybody."

The Heat had not won in Boston since the New Big Three was formed - including a double-overtime Celtics victory on Jan. 27, when Ray Allen returned with his new team.

That was the day Rajon Rondo was diagnosed with an ACL tear that ended his season. This time, it was Garnett who sat out, though coach Doc Rivers said he would have played if the thigh injury had not been compounded by the flu.

"I believed we were going to win the game before the game. I thought we were going to win the game during the game. And I thought we should have won the game," Rivers said. "I give them credit. They made some spectacular plays."

Boston led by as many as 17 in the first half, but it was 103-all when Miami got the ball with 33 seconds left. James dribbled down the shot clock before putting up a jumper from the right wing to take the lead.

Green drove into the lane for Boston, but he was stuffed by Battier; the ball went out of bounds and, after replay, was given to the Celtics with 7.1 seconds remaining.

Courtney Lee found Pierce for an open 3-pointer, but it bounced long off the rim and Dwyane Wade, who scored 16, tipped the rebound to the corner and then grabbed it.

"No moral victories, even though it was a close game," Pierce said.

Green had 14 points in the first quarter, when the Celtics scored the last 17 points to open a 31-19 lead. Boston led by as many as 17 in the second, but Miami went on a 15-6 run just before the half to make it a six-point game and then scored the first eight points in the third quarter to take the lead.

Green had 12 in the second quarter and 12 in the third.

"He showed what he can do," Pierce said. "That was an example of it today."

Notes: James was called for a technical foul for taunting when he stood over Jason Terry after a dunk. It was James' sixth technical of the season and the 39th of his career. ... Pierce and Chalmers got involved in a minor scuffle when Pierce drew an offensive foul and Chalmers tried to grab the ball from him after the whistle.

THE FACTS: LeBron James had 37 points and 12 assists, as the Miami Heat overcame 43 points from Jeff Green to defeat the Boston Celtics 105-103 for their 23rd consecutive win. The visitors trailed by as many as 17 points in the first half against a shorthanded Celtics squad that was playing without Kevin Garnett (flu). The Heat fought back however, spoiling Green's career night with a game-winning jumper from James with ten seconds remaining. Boston came up empty in their final possession, allowing Miami to escape with the hard fought win.

QUOTABLE: "It means a lot to what we're trying to build. Boston is a tough-minded team on the road, it's a hostile environment. We grew again tonight and that's big for our team."

THE STAT: With the win, the Heat now have the second longest winning streak in NBA history, with 23 consecutive wins. The all-time longest winning streak is 33 games, held by the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers.

TURNING POINT: Miami trailed by seven points with just over five minutes remaining in the game, when Erik Spoelstra called a timeout to help his team regroup. From there, James took over, posting six points and three assists in the game's final minutes as Miami closed out the win with a 13-4 run.

QUOTABLE II: "It was the best team in the league and we took them to their breaking point. We just got to, when Kevin comes back, continue to play like we did today. With the addition of him, I think we will be more lethal. So as long as we continue to attack, get stops, we'll be in pretty good shape."

HOT: Green -- The hybrid forward could not be stopped by the Heat in the first half, as he scored 26 of his career-high 43 points in the opening two quarters, shooting a spectacular 9-of-12 from the field.

NOT: Avery Bradley -- Boston's defensive stopper missed eight of his 11 shot attempts and turned the ball over four times as he proved to be a liability for most of the night on the offensive end for Doc Rivers.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: James -- The defending MVP gave the Heat whatever they needed Monday night, posting a fantastic line of 37 points, 12 assists, seven rebounds, seven assists, two steals and two blocks over 42 minutes of action.

QUOTABLE III: "We wanted to get this one for our brother, for Ray [Allen], and we felt bad that it took us until the second time. We do take that very seriously, that every place that we've gone we've been able to take care of business for the guys, knowing that it's emotional, knowing that it will mean something to them.

NOTABLE: Rivers told reporters before the game that Garnett had recovered enough from his left adductor strain to play, but was sidelined by the flu. He is expected to return to action Wednesday night against the Hornets. The victory was the first regular season win in Boston for the Heat since 2007. The Celtics had their 11-game home winning streak snapped. The Celtics scored just seven points over the final eight minutes of the game. The Heat passed the 2007-08 Houston Rockets for the second longest winning streak in NBA history. Paul Pierce finished the game with 17 points, eight assists, eight rebounds and seven turnovers.
