Pacers-Cavaliers Preview

The Indiana Pacers' normally stout defense has been subpar in the last two games.

They would seemingly have better luck against a Cleveland team playing without Kyrie Irving, but the Cavaliers are coming off one of their highest-scoring games of the season.

Trying to avoid a third straight loss, the Central Division-leading Pacers look to continue their recent dominance over the Cavaliers on Monday night in Cleveland.

A defense that ranks second in the league in points allowed at 90.0 per game has played a big role in Indiana's quest for its first division title since 2004. The Pacers are 28-6 when holding opponents to 90 or less, but 12-20 when they allow more.

One night after giving up 83 points over the final three quarters of a 99-93 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, Indiana (40-26) yielded 27 points over the final 12 minutes in Saturday's 98-91 defeat to Philadelphia. The Pacers let both opponents shoot 11 of 20 in the fourth quarter.

"We're hitting that point in the season. It's a grind," coach Frank Vogel said after his team's fourth loss in six games. "Guys have played all season a heck of a lot more minutes than they've ever played before. It seems we're a step slow in a lot of areas. We've got to grind through it. It's a concern, not alarming."

Vogel, however, might be even more concerned after seeing what the banged-up Cavaliers (22-44) did in San Antonio on Saturday.

Facing a Spurs team that allows an average of 93.7 points at home, Cleveland scored 90 through three quarters and led by one with 4:40 to play. Though his Cavaliers ended up losing 119-113, coach Byron Scott was still pleased with the showing against the Western Conference's top team.

"I think for us, we played this game really well," he said.

Wayne Ellington had 21 points and fellow reserve Marreese Speights scored 19 for the Cavs, who shot 50.6 percent and only had 10 turnovers.

Cleveland wasn't nearly as efficient in the season's first two games with Indiana, averaging 85.0 points and shooting 36.6 percent in a pair of December defeats. The Cavs have been outscored by an average of 12.5 points in losing four straight to the Pacers and have one win in the last 11 meetings.

Indiana has limited Irving to an average of 13.0 points on 32.1 percent shooting in the season series, but won't have to worry about facing the All-Star point guard this time because of a sprained left shoulder. Cleveland is 5-12 without him this season but 3-3 since the All-Star break.

While the Pacers are hoping to see some improvement on the defensive end, getting more consistent offensive performances from Roy Hibbert would also help.

Hibbert had 25 points Saturday after scoring seven on 3-of-12 shooting against the Lakers.

Hibbert similarly had varying outings in this season's two games against the Cavs, finishing with four points on 1-of-7 shooting in the first meeting and 18 points while hitting 8 of 12 in the second. The Pacers are 14-4 when Hibbert, who averages 10.8 points, scores at least 13.

Fellow big man David West, averaging 17.3 points, won't play due to a sprained lower back. Tyler Hansbrough will start in place of West, who is listed as day-to-day.

Green, Hansbrough lead Pacers past Cavs, 111-90

CLEVELAND (AP) Indiana coach Frank Vogel wasn't in a very good mood before Monday's game against Cleveland, and it was easy to see why.

Not only had the Pacers dropped two in a row, including a loss to lowly Philadelphia on Sunday, Vogel was going to be without forward David West, who missed the game with a back injury.

Thanks to a balanced attack, Vogel felt much better about things a few hours later. Gerald Green scored 20 points and Tyler Hansbrough, starting in place of West, had 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Pacers to a 111-90 victory.

West was out with a sprained lower back sustained against the 76ers, but the Pacers dominated without their second-leading scorer. Green scored 13 points in the second quarter and Hansbrough, making just his second start of the season, led a balanced attack.

Paul George scored 14 points while Roy Hibbert added 12 as the Pacers avoided losing three in a row for the third time this season.

"This was a great team win," Vogel said. "Tyler is a starter in this league. Obviously, we got a big, big lift from Gerald Green."

However, not everyone in the Pacers' locker room was in a cheery mood. The bad blood that's developed between the teams this season surfaced again late in the third quarter when Cavaliers center Marreese Speights was ejected for a flagrant foul 2 on George, the Pacers' All-Star forward. George was driving for a fast-break layup when Speights grabbed him by the neck and threw him to the floor. The officials called Speights for a flagrant foul and ejected him after looking at the replay.

George made it clear he was unhappy with the hard foul.

"It was a punk play, honestly," he said. "It's as simple as that. Me and Mo Speights are cool, so I don't think it's anything personal, but that was a punk play the way he went after me like that."

The teams had an altercation in their first meeting when Tristan Thompson and Hansbrough had to be separated after Thompson caught Hansbrough's younger brother, Ben, with an errant elbow. Tyler Hansbrough and Daniel Gibson exchanged words when the teams met in December.

The teams play for the final time this season in Indiana on April 9 and it's obvious the Pacers have left an impression on a young Cavaliers team.

"They came into our house and beat us down," said Dion Waiters, who didn't play after the first quarter because of a sore left knee.

"We have to come out and throw the first punch; be men about it," said Tristan Thompson, who had 20 points and 11 rebounds. "Don't sit back and see how Indiana is going to play."

C.J. Miles led Cleveland with 21 points, but injuries continued to plague the Cavaliers. Waiters will be re-evaluated Tuesday and isn't sure if he will play Wednesday when the Cavaliers host Miami. Cleveland also played its fourth straight game without All-Star guard Kyrie Irving, who is out with a sprained left shoulder.

Green scored 13 points in the second quarter, including three 3-pointers in a stretch of 1:29, to spark a 20-7 run to end the period. Indiana led 40-38 midway through the quarter, but Green had 11 points and Tyler Hansbrough added a three-point play and a layup.

West missed just his second game this season, but Indiana continued to pull away in the second half. The Pacers built a 28-point lead in the fourth quarter.

Jeff Pendergraph added 11 points for Indiana, which had lost four of six. Indiana also maintained its hold on second place in the Eastern Conference standings.

Cleveland has lost three in a row and was down to 10 players by the end of the game.

NOTES: West, averaging 17.3 points, could play Tuesday at home against Orlando. "His back is pretty sore, so we'll see," said Vogel. ... Indiana F Danny Granger, who has played in only five games this season because of a sore left knee, has been cleared to resume practicing. He could return to action next week. ... Irving, who is expected to miss about three more weeks, is no longer wearing a sling on his left arm. ... Cleveland F Luke Walton wore a temporary protective mask when he took the floor after sustaining a broken nose Saturday. He was run over attempting to take a charge from San Antonio's Tim Duncan. Walton removed the mask after a few minutes and will be fitted with a permanent one in the next few days. He became the fourth Cleveland player this season to wear a mask after suffering a facial injury. Thompson, Irving and Tyler Zeller are the others.

THE FACTS: Shooting guard Gerald Green scored 13 of his team-high 20 points in the second quarter as the Indiana Pacers crushed the Cleveland Cavaliers 111-90 Monday night..

Indiana (41-26) power forward Tyler Hansbrough added 18 points and 11 rebounds, while All-Star small forward Paul George had 14 points. Shooting guard C.J. Miles scored a game-best 21 points for Cleveland (22-45), which also received 20 points and 11 boards from power forward Tristan Thompson. Cavaliers center Marreese Speights was ejected late in the third quarter for committing a flagrant-two foul on George, wrapping his forearm around his neck before throwing him to the ground.

QUOTABLE: "It was a punk play, honestly. It's as simple as that. Me and Mo Speights are cool, so I don't think it's anything personal, but that was a punk play the way he went after me like that."

THE STAT: Pacers power forwards Hansbrough and Jeff Pendergraph combined for 29 points, 18 rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots while filling in for the injured David West (lower back sprain). Hansbrough played 23 minutes in his second start of the season, while Pendergraph logged 25 minutes as his backup. "Obviously, we've got great depth at the power forward position," Indiana coach Frank Vogel said. "Tyler is a legitimate starter in this league and Jeff might be, as well. He's definitely at least a quality backup." West is listed as day to day.

TURNING POINT: After Cavaliers center Tyler Zeller made two free throws to cut Indiana's lead to 40-38 midway through the second, the Pacers responded with a 20-5 run that blew the game wide open. Green buried three 3-pointers in a 79-second span, then added a gorgeous, one-handed alley-oop off a pass from point guard George Hill. "I just tried to run the floor hard and provide a lot of energy out there," said Green, who did not play in Indiana's four previous games. "But tonight was all about us winning the basketball game."

QUOTABLE II: "It's a different mentality coming off the bench, but I don't expect to start over David West. He's a great player. I just had to make a little mental adjustment tonight, knowing I was starting."

HOT: The Pacers are 3-0 against the Cavaliers this season, extending their overall win streak over them to five games. Indiana center Roy Hibbert had four of his game-high five blocked shots in the third. Thompson leads the Cavaliers with 25 double-doubles. In his last 41 contests, the second-year pro is averaging 13.5 points while shooting .502 from the field.

NOT: Cavaliers shooting guard Dion Waiters exited after the first quarter with a sore left knee. The fourth overall pick in the NBA Draft revealed that his knee had been bothering him for a "couple of games and just wasn't feeling right tonight. The doctor said we'll find out how things are tomorrow." Cleveland shooting guards Waiters, Wayne Ellington, and Daniel Gibson combined to shoot 4-for-25 from the field (.160).

QUOTABLE III: "We just didn't come out with enough fight tonight. That's not acceptable, especially at home. We have to throw the first punch and be men about it. We have to play hard every night."

GOOD MOVE: Vogel announced before the game that he had elevated Green into the Pacers' 10-man rotation, replacing small forward Sam Young. Green responded by shooting 7-for-13 on field goals, including 4-for-7 beyond the arc, and 2-for-2 on free throws. It was his top output since scoring a season-high 21 points against Utah on Dec. 19. "It's been tough because I've wanted to play, but OJ (shooting guard Orlando Johnson) and Sam have been doing great," Green said. "They've been fully supportive of me the whole time, so I have to show them the same respect now."

BAD MOVE: Speights displayed terrible judgment when he grabbed George from behind on a fast-break layup attempt, wrapped his arm around his throat, and flung him to the floor. George remained down on the baseline, holding his neck, for more than a minute, but recovered to make both of his subsequent free throws. Speights is facing a possible $35,000 fine -- along with an NBA suspension -- as the Cavaliers prepare to host the Miami Heat on Wednesday. The Cavaliers are already without their top center in Anderson Varejao (season-ending right knee surgery).

NOTABLE: Pacers small forward Danny Granger (left knee soreness) has resumed physical activity and will work out individually for the rest of this week. Granger has been limited to five games and 74 minutes this season because of ongoing pain from patellar tendinosis. ... Vogel said West could play Tuesday when the Pacers play Orlando at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, but added, "His back is pretty sore, so we'll see." ... Cavaliers power forward Luke Walton suffered a broken nose Saturday when he was inadvertently struck by Spurs power forward Tim Duncan. Walton becomes the fourth Cleveland player to wear a protective facemask this season, joining All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving, Zeller, and Thompson.
