Grizzlies-Nuggets Preview

The Denver Nuggets are on the verge of their longest win streak in 30 seasons but will have to get past another one of the NBA's hottest teams to accomplish that feat.

The Nuggets will seek an 11th consecutive victory and their 15th in a row at home Friday night against the Memphis Grizzlies, winners in 14 of 15.

Denver hasn't won 11 in a row since Feb. 24-March 15, 1983, but put itself on the brink of matching that streak with another blowout. With Wednesday's 117-94 win over the visiting New York Knicks, the Nuggets (44-22) have won their past four games by an average of 19.0 points.

"We're playing really well right now," guard Andre Iguodala said. "Obviously, we've grown from the beginning. We started off with a tough first two months, playing on the road so much and trying to get acclimated with one another."

Denver, which boasts the Western Conference's best home record at 29-3, has also won its past four contests at the Pepsi Center by an average of 19.3 points but would appear to have a tougher test coming up. The Grizzlies (44-19) have matched a season high with four straight road wins and have won seven of eight away from home after defeating the Los Angeles Clippers 96-85 on Wednesday.

Marc Gasol led the way with 21 points on 10-of-14 shooting and Memphis held the Pacific Division leaders to 33 second-half points while earning its sixth straight overall victory.

"We don't get caught up in the gravity of the situation too much," guard Mike Conley said. "We just go out there as a hardworking team every night. This is a huge win, obviously, second game of a back-to-back against a good team. We just did a good job defensively, and playing at our pace."

The Grizzlies, though, have struggled in Denver as a franchise, losing 29 of 33 all-time visits. They had a chance to win at the Pepsi Center on Dec. 14 but committed a turnover and missed two 3-pointers in the final 12 seconds of a 99-94 loss.

Andre Miller scored all 18 of his points in the second half, including four free throws in the last 10 seconds.

Denver has won two of the three meetings this season, with Danilo Gallinari totaling 40 points in the victories but scoring just seven in an 81-72 loss on Dec. 29. That was the lowest-scoring game of the season for the Nuggets, who have reached triple digits in 24 of their last 25 games.

The Grizzlies won't have the player who was largely responsible for that victory. Rudy Gay, who scored eight of his 19 points in the final four minutes, was traded to Toronto on Jan. 30 as part of a three-team deal.

Gay averaged a team-best 20.7 points in the three games against Denver while Zach Randolph was the next-best scorer at 11.3 per matchup.

Randolph has totaled 32 points and 18 boards in his last two games after missing the previous four with a sprained left ankle.

Denver's Wilson Chandler had a team-high 24 points Wednesday, and the Nuggets are 10-1 when he scores at least 12. Injuries have prevented him from playing in the season's first three matchups with Memphis.

The Nuggets' home win streak is their longest in one season since 19 straight victories from Jan. 28-April 20, 1989. The Grizzlies, meanwhile, are seeking their first five-game road win streak since a run of seven consecutive victories Feb. 17-March 10, 2010.

Denver beats Memphis 87-80 for 11th straight win

DENVER (AP) The Denver Nuggets plodded along for three quarters before beating Memphis at its own game.

Hardly known as a half-court team, the high-flying Nuggets had to resort to set plays and setting picks to finally break free.

Turns out, they're pretty good at it, especially when they dump the ball inside to Kosta Koufos.

Koufos scored 18 points and grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds, helping the Nuggets rally to knock off the Grizzlies 87-80 on Friday night for their 11th straight victory, their longest streak in 30 years.

This is definitely an offense Koufos could get used to.

Only, he'd rather not.

"We want to maintain being a running team," the 7-foot center said. "We need to keep going and attacking."

That wasn't possible against the Grizzlies, the best defensive team in the league. They clogged the passing lanes and clamped down on fast breaks. The Nuggets were growing frustrated, too, and the crowd restless.

The Nuggets hadn't been shut down like this in quite a while, especially at home, where they've now won 15 straight games to run their record at Pepsi Center to 30-3.

Then along came Kenneth Faried, providing a much-needed spark with his energetic play. The player known as "Manimal" was blocking shots, hustling for rebounds and pestering Zach Randolph, the Grizzlies' force up front who had 18 points and 18 rebounds.

With the Nuggets trailing 66-58 heading into the fourth quarter, Faried helped them go on a 17-4 run and seize back the momentum. That's exactly why he's on the court.

"I saw my teammates were not their usual selves - guys weren't doing what they usually do," said Faried, who finished with eight points and four blocked shots. "It seemed like we were in a struggle offensively, couldn't score the ball. I just played hard and brought some energy. I believed it helped tonight, gave a boost to my teammates."

That it did. Winning this way also showed the Nuggets they can play any way necessary.

"I thought this was a good test for us," Nuggets coach George Karl said. "I said at the beginning of the fourth quarter, `This is good for us. We'll find out how we have to do it - can we do it?'

"I thought Kenneth was great. I thought Kosta - those guys, in a big game, played at a very important level for us."

The last time the Nuggets won 11 straight was Feb. 24 to March. 15, 1983.

The Grizzlies, Nuggets and Los Angeles Clippers are now tightly bunched in the race for the third seed in the Western Conference, with only a half-game separating the teams.

"We understand where the standings are at," said Mike Conley, whose team had its six-game winning streak snapped. "But we still have 20 games left and anything can happen from there. We're just worried about tomorrow."

This was a matchup of two of the hottest teams in the NBA not named the Miami Heat. It also was a game of contrasting styles, with Denver trying to push the pace and Memphis preferring to play at a more deliberate tempo.

Early on, the Nuggets controlled the rhythm - and the game - as they led by as many as nine in the first half. Jerryd Bayless beat the buzzer with a layup just before halftime to send the Grizzlies into the locker room trailing just 48-47.

After halftime, the Grizzlies began rolling by slowing things down. They also turned the pressure up a notch and held Denver to a season-low 10 points in the third quarter to take a 66-58 lead.

For three quarters, the Nuggets were lethargic and couldn't match the energy of Wednesday, when they thumped the New York Knicks in Carmelo Anthony's first return to the city since he was traded two years ago.

Finally, they turned it on.

"You grow playing these kinds of games," said Danilo Gallinari, who finished with 15 points, including two free throws to break a tie with just over two minutes remaining. "You cannot grow a lot when you're blowing out a team by 20 or 30. These are the kind of games that make you improve as a team."

Marc Gasol couldn't agree more.

"I don't see it as a setback. We feel confident in the way we can play this team," said Gasol, who chipped in 14 points. "We played this team well for 36 minutes. Then we tried to play their basketball. We kind of played that way for 12 minutes and they won. But I think for 36 minutes we played good basketball but games last 48 minutes, not 36."

Notes: The Grizzlies have been on a 15-5 roll since a three-team deal on Jan. 30 that sent Rudy Gay to Toronto and landed Tayshaun Prince in Memphis. ... Denver has won 26 of its last 28 home games against Memphis. ... The Nuggets are 28-3 when allowing 100 or fewer points.

THE FACTS: The Denver Nuggets are accustomed to winning high-scoring games. Friday, they figured out how to grind out a victory.

Kosta Koufos scored 18 points and grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds, Danilo Gallinari had 15 points and the Nuggets overcame a bad third quarter to pull out an 87-80 win over the Memphis Grizzlies. The win was the 11th in a row and 15th straight at home for Denver (45-22). More importantly, it moved the Nuggets within a half-game of the Grizzlies and Los Angeles Clippers for third in the Western Conference. Denver also won the season series from the Grizzlies, 3-1.

Zach Randolph had 18 points and 18 rebounds for Memphis (44-20), which had its six-game winning streak snapped.

QUOTABLE: "Tonight's game was a man's game. We didn't have anybody playing at a high level, skill-wise, and it was a game you won because of heart and toughness and gut."

THE STAT: Denver had scored at least 100 points in its last 11 games, and 29 of its last 34. The Nuggets hadn't scored fewer than 90 since an 81-72 loss at Memphis on Dec. 29.

TURNING POINT: The start of the fourth quarter. Denver's defense did enough in the third to keep the Grizzlies within eight points before the offense found some footing. The Nuggets scored the first nine points and went on a 17-4 run to take a five-point lead. After Memphis tied it at 78, Gallinari hit two free throws and Koufos a small jump hook to give Denver the lead for good. Andre Iguodala sealed it with a steal and a dunk to make it 86-80 with 50 seconds left.

QUOTABLE II: "We had a couple of bad turnovers, they had an offensive rebound under the basket to start the [fourth] quarter. When you have a couple of bad plays, it's all about the timing. And the timing wasn't good."

HOT: Koufos has shown he can score when needed. He had a career-high 22 at Phoenix on Monday and followed it up with another solid performance. He takes advantage when the opponents' big men move off of him to help out when Denver's guards drive to the basket, leading to a lot of open shots.

NOT: The Nuggets in the third quarter. They missed 11 off their first 12 shots, including six straight to start the period, and were 4-for-20 overall. They committed six turnovers and scored a season-low 10 points for a period. The only positive was Memphis didn't blow it open. It was an eight-point game headed to the fourth.

QUOTABLE III: "We survived with our defense. Our offense wasn't very good. You grow playing these kinds of games and you learn so much."

GOOD MOVE: The Grizzlies got Denver to play at their pace in the first three quarter. The Nuggets' 68 points heading into the fourth was closer to Memphis' style. Denver seemed out of sync, settling for contested jumpers.

BAD MOVE: The Grizzlies start of the fourth quarter. They had Denver where they wanted but they couldn't sustain the lead. Four missed shots and three turnovers in the first four minutes gave the Nuggets life and ignited the crowd.

QUOTABLE IV: "It's when you make turnovers. You can have 20 turnovers in the first half, but if you make two or three in the fourth quarter with two minutes to go it's probably going to cost you the game."

NOTABLE: Denver last won 11 straight 30 years to the day -- March 15, 1983. ... The Nuggets have beaten Memphis 26 of the last 28 games played in Denver. ...
