Lakers-Pacers Preview

The Los Angeles Lakers have looked much more promising in recent weeks as they've made a push for the playoffs. It didn't take long, however, for yet another potential challenge to surface.

Kobe Bryant suffered a scary injury his last time out, but Los Angeles may still have its superstar guard in the lineup Friday night when it visits the Indiana Pacers.

Bryant severely sprained his left ankle on a missed game-tying shot in the closing seconds of a 96-92 loss to Atlanta on Wednesday, landing on Dahntay Jones' foot and crumpling to the ground.

Despite that, Bryant will be a game-time decision Friday as coach Mike D'Antoni said he is getting better every day. Bryant, among the league leaders with 27.5 points per contest, hasn't missed a game since the 2009-10 season.

"That's not the Kobe I know," guard Steve Nash said of the possibility of Bryant sitting out. "We'll see how he feels. ... This is his team and everyone respects him."

The Pacers expect Bryant to play.

"We'll be ready," coach Frank Vogel said. "If he goes, there's not anybody able to overcome injuries as well as he has, so we'll be ready for Kobe at full strength."

Jones wasn't called for a foul on the play, which Bryant felt was dirty because Jones slid under him. The NBA agreed that the play should have indeed drawn a foul call.

"I can't get my mind past the fact that I have to wait a year to get revenge," he said, as Los Angeles won't face Atlanta again until next season. "It's just a very, very dangerous play, especially when I'm fading away."

The Lakers (34-32) have recently found their stride in a season marked by lack of chemistry, occasional discord and injury, winning four straight and 17 of 23 prior to Wednesday. They own a half-game lead over the Jazz for eighth place in the Western Conference.

Jodie Meeks would likely figure to start if Bryant can't go. Meeks is averaging 8.0 points in 19.1 minutes per game.

Even if the hobbled Bryant plays, the Lakers may have to lean more heavily on center Dwight Howard, who has finally returned to form with 21.8 points and 16.2 rebounds over his last five contests. He averaged 15.9 points and 12.1 boards in his first 55 games.

Indiana center Roy Hibbert, like Howard, has been surging lately after some inconsistent play. Hibbert has scored 16.8 points per game while shooting 56.3 percent in his last six, compared to 10.0 and 42.0 in the previous 57.

He scored a season-high 27 with 12 rebounds in a 107-91 home win over Minnesota on Wednesday.

"You could see in his body language, he's just playing more confident," coach Frank Vogel told the team's official website. "We said all along that it was going to be a process and that he would snap out of it. He's playing well, not just tonight, but over the last few weeks."

The Pacers (40-24) need Hibbert to continue his strong production with Danny Granger out at least two more games due to knee soreness. Granger, who will have the knee re-evaluated at the end of the week, has missed all but five games and sat out four straight since that brief five-game return.

Granger didn't play in the teams' first meeting, a 79-77 Pacers road win Nov. 27. Bryant had 40 points and 10 rebounds, but the Lakers shot 31.9 percent. George Hill led Indiana with 19 points and David West added 16, 10 boards, eight assists and two blocks.

The Lakers have won three of the teams' last four matchups in Indianapolis, with Bryant averaging 30.0 points in those contests.

Bryant leaves early, but Lakers beat Pacers 99-93

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) When Kobe Bryant couldn't be the tough guy on the court Friday night, he resorted to being an MVP coach.

After hobbling around on a severely sprained left ankle for 12 minutes, Bryant retreated to the bench, where he spent the rest of the night contesting calls, waving teammates into the right spots and even drawing something up on a clipboard for Dwight Howard to see.

He wasn't going to let up - or let his teammates down.

So on a night Bryant was held scoreless for only the 15th time in his 17-year NBA career, Howard finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds, and delivered a tiebreaking three-point play with 90 seconds left that sent the Los Angeles Lakers past Indiana, 99-93.

"It really just continued to swell and I couldn't put any weight on it, so I called it a night," Bryant said after getting more treatment on the sore ankle in the training room. "I told them before the game, `I don't know how much I have, but whatever I have, I'll give you."'

He did plenty.

Bryant, known as a remarkably quick healer who hasn't missed a game since the 2009-10 season, gallantly played less than 48 hours after turning his ankle when he landed on Dahntay Jones' foot in the waning seconds of Wednesday's loss at Atlanta.

For two days, Bryant worked in silent seclusion. He didn't speak to reporters when the Lakers took Thursday off, after the team's morning shootaround or before Friday night's game started. Instead, he got round-the-clock treatment on what he described as the worst ankle sprain of his professional career.

Coach Mike D'Antoni watched closely as Bryant went through warm-ups, then spoke with the team's medical staff and again with the five-time NBA champion before putting him in the starting lineup.

Clearly, Bryant was not himself. He went 0 for 4 from the field, coming up short on each shot, then went to the bench after one quarter and never returned to the game. He spent the second half clinging to a little black box with wires attached to the injured ankle.

But he remained active all night on the sideline. Bryant continually pulled players aside during the game, offering encouragement and advice and helping them read the Pacers' vaunted defense. Eventually, things worked out.

"He was great, he was engaged and he wanted us to win," point guard Steve Nash said. "So we had a lot of energy over there."

It showed on a Lakers team that has spent the last two months trying to dig itself out of an early hole.

Without their top player, the Lakers (35-32) still extended their lead to one game over Utah for the eighth and final playoff spot in the West by beating up on a team that came into the game with the league's No. 2 defense and the league's fifth-best home record.

How did they do it?

Metta World Peace finished with 19 points and seven rebounds, Steve Blake made five 3-pointers and finished with 18 points, and Antawn Jamison added 17 points with four 3s.

"We don't shoot much better than that," D'Antoni said when asked about going 13 of 26 from beyond the arc.

For the Central Division-leading Pacers (40-25), it was a blown opportunity.

George Hill scored 27 points, Paul George had 20 points and Lance Stephenson finished with 12 points, 11 rebounds and five assists. But Indiana shot only 37.4 percent from the field and couldn't make a serious run at Los Angeles after Howard's big play, primarily because the defense couldn't stop the Lakers from outside.

"We had too many breakdowns, we didn't follow the game plan," coach Frank Vogel said. "Guarding the 3-point line was probably the biggest of the mental breakdowns. We left shooters left and right, a variety of different ways. We didn't play a good basketball game."

It was a strange game, too, and not just because of Bryant's absence.

The Lakers started the game by missing their first five shots. The Pacers opened the second quarter 0 for 6. Neither team topped the 30 percent shooting mark until the final 2 1/2 minutes of the half.

George, the Pacers' All-Star, started 0 for 4, and Howard, another All-Star, was called for two personal fouls and a technical less than five minutes into the game. Even the officials found themselves making corrections, twice adding time to the clock in the final five seconds of the first half.

On the court, the play was also up and down.

The Pacers took charge early, fell behind 39-28 in the second quarter and eventually closed to 46-41 at halftime. Indiana continued its charge early in the third, using a 15-4 spurt to take a 56-50 lead, and with Bryant out appeared headed toward another home win.

But Bryant inspired the Lakers to rally.

"Kobe said we've got to do whatever we can, that we had to trust each other," Howard said.

Howard's three-point play gave Los Angeles the lead for good and allowed Bryant to limp off the court by trading high-fives with the players he kept supporting all night long.

"It's just reading defenses and seeing what's going on, seeing things we can take advantage of and putting them in the best position possible to be successful," Bryant said.

Notes: There was no immediate update about Bryant's availability for Sunday night's game against Sacramento. ... In the final 5.2 seconds of the first half, there were two replay reviews, a 20-second timeout, time added to the clock twice and no points. ... The Lakers are 6-8 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, with three straight wins on the Pacers' home court. ... Earlier Friday, D'Antoni said forward Pau Gasol could return in the next few days. He hasn't played since early February after tearing the plantar fascia in his right foot.

THE FACTS: Kobe Bryant started but couldn't finish, but it mattered little to the Los Angeles Lakers. Despite a scoreless 12 minutes from Bryant, the Lakers rode a combined 35 points and 9-for-14 shooting from the 3-point line from reserves Steve Blake and Antawn Jamison, 20 points from Dwight Howard and 19 from Metta World Peace to a 99-93 victory over the Pacers Friday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Producing just their third road win against a team with a winning record, the Lakers (35-32) recorded their 15th win in 21 games. They also pushed one full game ahead of Utah in the race for the final playoff berth in the Western Conference. Indiana (40-25) was led by George Hill with 27 and Paul George with 20 but shot just 37.4 percent.

QUOTABLE: "We played hard and we played very well defensively. I thought Steve Blake and Metta on the defensive end were unbelievable. And Antawn was huge and Dwight was huge the whole game, able to stay out of foul trouble."

THE STAT: Bryant did not score for the 15th time in his career, the first time since March 5, 2004, when he played just one minute in Seattle.

TURNING POINT: The teams traded the lead five times and were tied thrice in the fourth quarter, with Hill's jumper tying it at 87-all with 2:38 remaining. While Indiana came up empty on its next three possessions, Howard converted a three-point play and Jamison followed with a 3-pointer and a free throw to push the L.A. lead to 94-87 with 43.7 seconds left.

QUOTABLE II: "Really stiff, continued to swell, couldn't put weight on it so I called it a night. ... I just couldn't move, it's as simple as that. I just couldn't put any pressure on it."

HOT: Jamison shot 6-for-10 overall, 4-for-7 from the arc, adding seven rebounds, while Blake shot 5-for-8 overall, 5-for-7 from the arc, adding seven rebounds and six assists. Howard added 12 rebounds and four blocks and made shot 6-for-11 from the free-throw line. Indiana's Hill shot 11-for-19 overall and scored 20 of his 27 in the second half.

NOT: Besides Hill, Indiana's other four starters combined to shoot 18-for-57 (.316). ... Indiana's bench was outscored 37-19 as the reserves combined to shoot 8-for-23 (.348). ... Bryant was 0-for-4 and his backup, Jodie Meeks, was 0-for-7.
