The Dallas Mavericks are coming off a solid trip, but with the position they're in, it needed to be better.

Dallas will try to rebound from its first loss in five games on Friday night when it opens a potentially crucial stretch at home against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Going for a season-best fifth consecutive victory - and an undefeated four-game stretch outside Dallas - the Mavericks (30-34) lost 92-91 to Western Conference-leading San Antonio on Thursday. Dallas scored the game's final seven points, but Vince Carter's 3-pointer in the final second missed.

The Mavericks, targeting a 13th consecutive playoff appearance, trail the eighth-place Los Angeles Lakers by three games in the Western Conference.

"It has been the motto for our year," Dirk Nowitzki said after scoring 21 points with 11 rebounds for his second straight double-double. "We are right there, we just cannot get over the hump."

Maybe a stretch of eight of nine at home will help Dallas, which will face a Cavaliers team trying to move on without All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving. The reigning rookie of the year could be done for the season after suffering a sprained left shoulder in Sunday's 100-96 loss at Toronto.

"I think it gives us a golden opportunity to continue to develop our team concept," coach Byron Scott, whose team defeated Washington 95-90 on Wednesday without Irving, said following Thursday's practice.

With Irving sidelined, rookie guard Dion Waiters should get plenty of opportunities to develop over the final six weeks of the season and prove to Scott that he can carry the Cavaliers (22-42), and close out a game. The No. 4 overall pick scored 12 of his team-best 20 points in the final 7:29 on Wednesday.

"Coach told me to keep attacking," said Waiters, the league's second-highest scoring rookie with 14.8 points per game. "Either to get to the basket or find an open teammate. That's what I was trying to do."

The Cavaliers will try to slow down Nowitzki for the first time this season after the big German missed the Mavs' 103-95 victory in Cleveland on Nov. 17 following offseason knee surgery.

"Tristan (Thompson) starting off on him is going to have his hands full," Scott said.

Thompson, though, could also cause headaches for the Dallas frontcourt. The second-year forward is averaging 12.5 points and 11.5 rebounds while posting a career high-tying four consecutive double-doubles.

Thompson had 10 points and 12 boards in the previous matchup with Dallas.

Mavs forward Shawn Marion scored 10 points with 10 rebounds in that game, but he could miss a fifth straight game with a bruised calf. He's scheduled to be examined on Friday.

"We don't have anybody that can replace what Shawn does," Mavs coach Rick Carlisle said. "There just aren't any 6-8 guys that can guard point guards or centers and can do the playmaking or running and all the different things that he can do. … He's been our leading rebounder all year, so it's a loss and it's a hit we've got to take here."

Dallas, though, has won four of five in this series and nine of 11 with the Cavs in town.

Cleveland, 2-9 visiting West opponents, will try to match a season high with back-to-back road wins.

Bench helps Mavs beat Cavs 96-86

DALLAS (AP) Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle was looking for any solution he could find to turn around his team's sputtering offense.

Then seldom-used guard Rodrigue Beaubois gave Dallas the scoring punch it needed to turn away the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Beaubois scored 18 points off the bench and keyed a fourth-quarter run to lead the Mavericks past the Cavaliers, 96-86 on Friday night.

Beaubois scored nine points and added three assists in the fourth quarter. The French guard had played just 33 minutes since Feb. 22 and totaled nine points in the team's previous five games.

"We have to make sure that everybody's ready," Beaubois said. "Even if you don't play, the next game maybe you're going to get in. So you have to be ready to contribute and to help the team win."

Dallas had a sluggish start after losing 92-91 Thursday night in San Antonio. The Mavericks hit only 7 of 21 shots in the first quarter and trailed by 11 early in the second.

Carlisle then turned to Beaubois and his mates off the bench. The Mavericks reserves outscored their Cavaliers counterparts 60-19.

It was Beaubois, though, who provided most of the offensive output for the bench with his most productive game since scoring 19 against the Spurs on Jan. 25. He scored seven points in a 17-4 run that gave Dallas the lead for good in the fourth quarter.

"(Beaubois) had his best game of the year and it was certainly his most timely," Carlisle said. "We knew we were going to have to go deep to be able to win."

Cleveland's Dion Waiters had 21 points and Shaun Livingston chipped in with 13. The Cavaliers, who were playing their second game without All-Star Kyrie Irving, were outscored 29-18 in the fourth quarter.

The Cavaliers went nearly five minutes without a field goal at one point in the fourth. They also turned the ball over six times in the final quarter.

"I thought we got a little upset at ourselves at the way we were defending," Cleveland coach Byron Scott said. "We kind of let that affect us on the other end."

Beaubois scored to put the Mavericks up 71-70 early in the fourth. He found Brandan Wright for a layup and then drained a 3-pointer to extend Dallas' advantage to 80-72.

Darren Collison and Wright had baskets to finish off the 17-4 run, putting the Mavericks up 84-72 with 6:17 left.

The 6-foot-2 Beaubois punctuated his game later in the fourth with an emphatic dunk on a baseline drive.

Collison and Wright each scored 13 off the bench for the Mavericks, who are three games behind the Los Angeles Lakers for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. Dallas opened a stretch where it plays eight of nine at home.

The Cavaliers dropped to 5-11 without Irving in the lineup. The reigning Rookie of the Year is expected to miss three to four weeks - and possibly the rest of the season - with a left shoulder strain.

Dallas guard Chris Wright, who is diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and returned to basketball last July, came into the game with 41 seconds left and scored the Mavericks' final basket. The Mavericks signed Wright to a 10-day contract on Wednesday.

"I just wanted to go in there and contribute something positive, Wright said. "That was pretty cool."

The Mavericks didn't lead until the third quarter.

O.J. Mayo found Collison for a layup and Jae Crowder connected on a 17-footer to finish off the surge and give Dallas a 57-54 lead with 5:06 left in the third.

Collison banked in a 20-footer with 1.3 seconds left in the third. Livingston caught a long pass and hit a turnaround jumper at the buzzer to give the Cavaliers a 68-67 lead.

Crowder had a season-high 14 rebounds and Dirk Nowitzki scored 13 points on 6-of-17 shooting for the Mavericks.

The Cavaliers jumped out to a 13-4 lead six minutes into the game. Dallas missed nine straight shots at one point as Cleveland built its early advantage.

After Cleveland stretched its lead to 11 early in the second quarter, Dallas went on a 16-6 run to get within a point. Beaubois scored six straight for the Mavericks, including a 3-pointer that trimmed the Cavaliers' lead to 33-32.

NOTES: Dallas F Shawn Marion, who missed his fifth straight game Friday night, was diagnosed with a strained left calf after he had an MRI on Friday. Carlisle said the injury was improving, but he did not give a timetable for Marion's return. . Cavaliers G Wayne Ellington didn't play because of a sprained left ankle. ... Cleveland's C.J. Miles is a Dallas native and attended Skyline High School, which is a few miles east of the American Airlines Center. The guard scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds.

THE FACTS: Reserves Rodrigue Beaubois, Brandan Wright and Darren Collison rallied the Dallas Mavericks to a 96-86 victory Friday against the visiting Cleveland Cavaliers. Those three players accounted for all of the Mavericks' points in a decisive 17-4 run to start the fourth quarter, giving surging Dallas (31-34) its fifth win in six games. All five starters scored in double figures for Cleveland (22-43), but its bench was outscored by a whopping 60-19 margin.

Beaubois was 3-for-5 from downtown and contributed 18 points and five assists in 21 minutes. It was first game in double figures since Jan. 25 and one point shy of his season high. Collison and Wright each had 13 points along with Dirk Nowitzki, who added 11 rebounds for his third straight double-double.

Dion Waiters paced the Cavaliers with 21 points and fellow rookie Tyler Zeller added 10 points and 10 boards. Cleveland led by as many as 11 points and didn't trail until the 5:27 mark of the third quarter, but shot 36.8 percent (7-for-19) and committed six of its 18 turnovers in the fourth. The Cavaliers have lost five of the last six meetings with the Mavericks and 10 of their last 12 in Dallas.

QUOTABLE: "We missed a bunch of wide-open shots in the second half, and they made a bunch of wide-open shots. That was the difference I thought between the first half and the second half."

THE STAT: Even though the Mavericks were playing the second game of a back-to-back and the Cavaliers had not played since Tuesday, the Mavericks played with more energy in the second half and were much more effective at running the fast break. Dallas outscored Cleveland 19-4 in transition.

TURNING POINT: Trailing 68-67, Dallas seized control with a 17-4 surge that included eight points by Wright (two dunks and two layups), seven by Beaubois and a layup by Collison.

HOT: Dallas shot 70.6 percent (12-for-17) in the third quarter, including 3-for-4 from behind the arc.

NOT: The Mavericks missed 10 of their first 11 field-goal attempts and shot 33.3 percent (7-for-21) in the first quarter. Their 38 first-half points matched a season low.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Dallas sixth man Vince Carter only scored seven points, but his 3-pointer with 1:33 remaining was his 8,000th-career field goal. He is just the 33rd player in NBA history to reach that milestone. The only active players with more field goals are Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett, Tim Duncan, Nowitzki and Ray Allen. It was also Carter's 100th-career appearance off the bench.

ROOKIE WATCH: Mavericks forward Jae Crowder grabbed a game- and career-high 14 rebounds.

NOTABLE: An MRI on Friday revealed a left calf strain for Mavericks forward Shawn Marion, not the contusion the team suspected. He missed his fifth straight game and is not expected back anytime soon. Marion averages 11.7 points and a team-high 7.9 rebounds. ... Cavaliers guard Wayne Ellington was a late scratched with a sprained left ankle. ... It was the Mavericks' first win this season when scoring fewer than 20 points in the first quarter (1-5). ... Dallas is 15-2 when shooting 50 percent from the field and 19-8 when holding opponents under 100 points. ... Cleveland is 2-10 on the road against the West. ... Point guard Chris Wright, the first NBA player with multiple sclerosis, made his Dallas debut and converted a layup with 9.4 seconds remaining for his first career points.
