Knicks-Trail Blazers Preview

Carmelo Anthony's return to Denver didn't go as planned and neither has the start of his team's road trip.

Now the Knicks will have to try to get back on track without their All-Star forward.

With Anthony headed back to New York, the Knicks will try for their first win on a five-game trip Thursday night when they face the Portland Trail Blazers.

Anthony, making his first appearance in Denver since being traded to the Knicks more than two years ago, hobbled into the locker room with nine minutes left in the third quarter on Wednesday and did not return in a 117-94 loss.

The team's leading scorer is returning to New York to have his ailing right knee drained and there is no timetable for his return. The Knicks are 5-5 without Anthony this season.

"I'm going to go get it drained, get the fluid out. Get to the bottom of it quick, so I can get back on the court," he said.

Anthony returned to the lineup for the start of their road swing, but has struggled after a three-game absence due to the injury. He scored 14 on 4-of-15 shooting in a 29-point loss at Golden State on Monday before finishing with nine on 3 of 12 from the field against the Nuggets.

New York is already missing Amar'e Stoudemire (knee surgery) and Rasheed Wallace (foot) in the frontcourt, but All-Star center Tyson Chandler is expected to play on Thursday after going down with a bruised left knee in the first half against the Nuggets.

J.R. Smith, the team's top scoring option in Anthony's absence, has struggled with 24 points on 8-of-23 shooting on this trip. He had 28 points and 11 rebounds in a 105-100 loss to the Trail Blazers on Jan. 1.

Iman Shumpert will also try to provide a spark after finishing with a season-high 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting on Wednesday.

After outrebounding the Knicks by a 47-37 margin in the first meeting, Portland may be able to take advantage of a banged-up New York interior that has been outrebounded by a 112-75 margin in its last two games.

Following back-to-back losses and three in four games overall, the Knicks (38-24) have fallen one game behind Indiana for second place in the Eastern Conference. They're also nursing a 1 1/2-game edge over Brooklyn atop the Atlantic Division.

Portland (29-34), meanwhile, looks to breathe some life into its fading playoff hopes as it trails the Los Angeles Lakers by 3 1/2 games for the final playoff spot in the West.

"Definitely that door is closing," LaMarcus Aldridge said. "We're going to have to string together some wins fast or that door is going to close on us."

The Trail Blazers, losers of 11 of 15 overall, have won seven of 10 at the Rose Garden and those three losses were by a combined 11 points.

Aldridge had 28 points and 10 boards and Damian Lillard scored 27 in a 102-97 home loss to Memphis on Tuesday.

Nicolas Batum led the way with 26 points and hit 6 of 12 from 3-point range in the earlier win at New York, but has averaged 5.7 on 4-of-18 shooting in his last three games.

The Trail Blazers have averaged 103.9 points - 5.9 above their season average - in their last 10 home games.

Portland has won nine of 11 at home in this series.

Lillard leads Blazers' 105-90 rout of Knicks

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) The Portland Trail Blazers are pretty happy with how their point guard situation has turned out.

Damian Lillard had 26 points and 10 assists to lead the Trail Blazers to a 105-90 victory over the Knicks on Thursday night, outplaying New York point guard Raymond Felton in his return to Portland.

LaMarcus Aldridge had 22 points and 10 rebounds and Nicolas Batum added 18 points for Portland, where Felton drew the ire of fans during a disappointing stint last season. The crowd was on Felton all night.

"Obviously, there's strong feelings about Raymond Felton here," Portland coach Terry Stotts said. "One of the things I've enjoyed about being in Portland is how passionate the fans are."

J.R. Smith had 33 points and Kenyon Martin added 12 to lead New York, which went ice cold in second half, shooting just 33 percent. The Knicks lead the Atlantic Division but have lost three straight after a rash of injuries that has decimated their starting five.

Tyson Chandler suffered a bruised knee in a collision Wednesday at Denver and was unavailable. Leading scorer Carmelo Anthony returned to New York to have his right knee drained after leaving Wednesday's game early. Amare Stoudemire is expected to miss at least six weeks after having knee surgery on Tuesday.

"Being short-handed didn't affect us at all (tonight)," said Jason Kidd, who was 1 of 8 from the field for New York. "We got off to a good start. But that second half, we just didn't play like we did in the first."

Felton was roundly criticized last year in Portland for starting the season out of shape and then playing well below expectations. He fanned the flames earlier in the week by telling Newsday about his return: "There are certain people there I don't want to see and better not come near me." Portland fans booed Felton when he was introduced and then each time he touched the ball. He finished with 11 points on 4-of-12 shooting.

"It was what I expected," Felton said. "Some boos. Boos the whole time, actually. It was funny. It made me laugh."

The Blazers drafted Lillard with the sixth pick in the NBA draft to replace Felton at point guard, and he has averaged 19.0 points and 6.4 assists a game to emerge as a front-runner for Rookie of the Year.

Lillard' emergence has been the brightest development for the still-developing Blazers, who have steadily slid out of playoff contention with losses in 11 of their last 15 entering the game.

"Every game is very important right now," Aldridge said.

New York shot 58 percent from the field in the first half and led for most of it. Marcus Camby's layup gave the Knicks 41-28 lead midway through the second quarter. However, the Blazers put together a charge just before halftime, ending the half with a 13-0 run to go into the break with a 51-48 advantage.

Portland kept the momentum in the third, going up 64-54 on Lillard's driving layup. Portland led 78-62 after three quarters as the Knicks went 5 of 27 from the field in the quarter.

Smith had 18 in the fourth for the Knicks, who got within 80-76, but the Blazers regained control with a 15-2 run.

NOTES: Aldridge was playing with a lingering ankle sprain and a swollen left hand, which he injured Tuesday against Memphis. ... Portland has won 10 of its last 12 over the Knicks at home. ... THE FACTS: Damian Lillard scored 26 points and passed out 10 assists, LaMarcus Aldridge contributed 22 points and 10 rebounds and J.J. Hickson added 12 points and 16 boards as Portland polished off the Knicks 105-90.

All five starters scored in double figures for the Trail Blazers (30-34), who won for only the fifth time in 17 games.

J.R. Smith came off the bench to bomb in 33 points for the Knicks (38-27), who lost their third straight to start this five-game road trip. New York was playing without its front-line stars Amar'e Stoudemire, Carmelo Anthony and Tyson Chandler, all missing due to knee injuries.

QUOTABLE: "Without those three -- not to say we're supposed to beat them, because they're still a good team -- but if you can catch a team like that on your homecourt, you want to win the game. We were able to get it done."

THE STAT: New York shot .615 the first quarter (13-for-21) to gain a 30-22 lead. The Knicks shot .370 (23-for-61) and were outscored 83-60 the rest of the way.

TURNING POINT: The Knicks led 48-38 with three minutes left in the second quarter. Then the Blazers, with Lillard leading the way, made their move, closing the half on a 13-0 roll to go into intermission ahead 51-48.

QUOTABLE II: "It was a game we definitely should have won. We're up 10 with two minutes left in the [first] half and they go on a 13-0 run. That's a heartbreaker."

HOT: Smith rained in 11-for-21 shots from the field, including 4-for-8 from 3-point range.

NOT: Hickson, who entered the game fifth in the NBA in field-goal percentage at .574, was 5-for-14 from the field.

GOOD MOVE: Portland coach Terry Stotts initially tried to go small to match up with the Knicks, who put on a pick-and-roll clinic early. Late in the second quarter he went back to Aldridge and Hickson together, and the Blazers started to click.

BAD MOVE: Ex-Blazer Raymond Felton kissed the sky as he was being booed during pregame introductions.

QUOTABLE III: "Maybe we relaxed a little bit, because they had no Melo, no Amare, no Tyson. Maybe we thought it was going to be easy. But the other [Knicks], they can play. We had to play, too, if we were going to win."

NOTABLE: Felton, who finished with 11 points on 4-for-12 shooting, on the nasty reception he got from the Rose Garden throng: "It was what I expected. They booed the whole time. It was funny. Lillard's eight-game streak of scoring 20 or more points is the longest by a Portland rookie since Calvin Natt in 1980.
