Suns-Rockets Preview

Recent inconsistency hasn't helped the Houston Rockets' playoff chances. They should be happy that one thing will remain consistent over the next two weeks - the arena they'll play in.

Following a lackluster road trip, the Rockets open a seven-game homestand looking to avenge last weekend's loss to the lowly Phoenix Suns and spoil the return to Houston for Goran Dragic and Luis Scola.

The Rockets (34-30) have not put together more than two straight wins or two consecutive losses in splitting their last 14 games. What they have done on a regular basis is win at home, going 13-4 over the past three months.

They won't leave home again until visiting Memphis on March 29, good news for a team which is seventh in the Western Conference but being chased closely by Utah and the Lakers.

"We can't blame anybody for anything that happens from here on out," Jeremy Lin told the team's official website. "We have no excuses. We have a great schedule so it's in our hands. That's what we want so we're just going to control what we can control. All I know is if we keep winning, if we put together a win streak, then no one will ever catch us."

Lin might be particularly pleased to be home for a while. He's averaged 20.8 points on 54.8 percent shooting over the past five there. Lin hasn't scored more than 15 in 10 straight road games, shooting 37.9 percent.

Houston has won six of seven home games while averaging 121.6 points. The Rockets' scoring average during a recently completed 1-2 road trip was 102.3, and they shot below 45 percent from the field in each game - that happened once in the previous 17.

"The homestand means nothing if we don't play well," coach Kevin McHale said.

McHale was particularly annoyed by his team's 21 turnovers and Phoenix's 24 second-chance points off 17 offensive rebounds Saturday as the Rockets fell 107-105.

It was the teams' first meeting this season and third straight win in the series for the Suns (22-42).

"We can't look at the Phoenix Suns and their roster," said James Harden, who had 38 points. "We've got to go out there and compete and play hard every possession. Times like this, we need wins."

Dragic had 18 points but only one assist, though his average of 9.5 assists since the All-Star break is among the league's best. He had eight points on 3-of-9 shooting Monday in a 108-93 loss to Denver.

The offseason signing of Lin meant the Rockets no longer needed Dragic, who started their final 26 games last season while averaging 18.2 points and 8.3 assists. The Suns re-signed him this summer just days after landing Scola, who played his first five seasons in Houston.

There should be a warm reception for Scola, who became known for his toughness as he averaged 14.5 points and 7.7 rebounds with the Rockets. Scola has struggled in five games this month, averaging 8.2 points on 32.4 percent shooting.

Former teammate Chandler Parsons is looking to bounce back from his 14-point, 5-of-16 shooting performance Saturday. He averaged 24.3 points on 63.6 percent shooting in the previous six.

Omer Asik has posted nine consecutive double-figure rebounding games and grabbed 16 on Saturday, but the Rockets were beaten 47-39 on the glass even with Phoenix missing centers Marcin Gortat (foot) and Jermaine O'Neal. Gortat remains out, but O'Neal rejoined the team this week and may play after missing four games due to his daughter undergoing heart surgery.

Motiejunas leads Rockets in 30-point rout of Suns

HOUSTON (AP) A night of reminders from Houston's recent past ended with a big win for the Rockets.

Donatas Motiejunas scored a career-high 19 points to lead five Houston starters in double figures and the Rockets routed the Phoenix Suns 111-81 on Wednesday night.

James Harden scored 18 and Omer Asik had 14 for the Rockets, who stayed in the No. 7 spot in the Western Conference standings.

Luis Scola had four points and four rebounds for Phoenix in his first game in Houston since the Rockets designated him as their amnesty cut last summer. And point guard Aaron Brooks got his first action since returning to the Rockets after Sacramento waived him on March 1.

"He took some of my little cheers, man," Brooks said. "I wish he could've come back another time."

Goran Dragic, another former Rocket, had 11 points and four assists for the Suns. Dragic signed a four-year, $30 million contract with Phoenix in the offseason after averaging 11.7 points and 5.3 assists in 66 games for Houston in 2011-12.

It was also the first game for Marcus Morris here since the Rockets traded him to Phoenix just before the deadline. Morris had five points and a blocked shot.

But Scola had the spotlight, drawing loud cheers when he was introduced and waving to acknowledge a standing ovation after a video tribute played on the giant scoreboard.

"I didn't really have a good angle, but it was really touching," said Scola, who played five seasons in Houston before signing with the Suns last July. "It was emotional to come here. I was really proud to be a part of the Rockets for those five years."

As for the game's outcome, Houston took care of that by outscoring the Suns 32-17 in the third quarter.

The Rockets led 58-45 at halftime, then continued to find room inside after the break. Chandler Parsons blocked a shot and then finished a fast break with a layup. Scola fouled him at the rim and Parsons sank the free throw to stretch Houston's lead to 17.

Houston finished with 26 assists on 39 field goals.

"We were moving the ball, sharing the ball," said Houston point guard Jeremy Lin, who had 13 points and six assists. "You could look across (the statistics) and see we had great distribution among the scoring. That's usually a great sign of transition buckets, as well as sharing the ball offensively."

Parsons had one of the highlights of the night when he slammed home Harden's alley-oop feed for a 76-56 lead with 5:46 still left in the third quarter. Harden found Greg Smith open underneath for another easy dunk three minutes later as Houston pulled away. Motiejunas drove past Michael Beasley for a hook shot to set a new career high in the last minute of the quarter.

"It's not really important for me, my career high," Motiejunas said. "I'm thinking more about team victories."

Wesley Johnson scored 10 of his 15 points in the first quarter for the Suns, who lost to Houston for just the fourth time in the last 14 meetings. The Suns mustered only 36 points in the second half.

"That's probably the first time I felt we didn't compete as a unit and that is just unacceptable," Suns coach Lindsey Hunter said. "It's embarrassing."

Houston had all five starters in double figures for the 11th time this season.

Phoenix led 43-38 when the Rockets launched a 15-0 run, finished by Asik's dunk, for a 53-43 lead. Markieff Morris scored inside at the other end to end a four-minute scoring drought for the Suns. Harden scored on a drive and sank a 3-pointer to put Houston up 58-45 at the break. Harden and Lin had 24 points together in the first half.

The game in hand midway through the fourth quarter, the crowd started chanting for Brooks, a first-round pick by Houston in 2007. He checked into the game with 5:02 remaining and prompted one of the loudest cheers of the night when he sank a 3-pointer.

"It felt good to be back," Brooks said, "it felt good to be loved again."

Notes: Suns C Jermaine O'Neal played after missing four games to be with his daughter, who had successful heart surgery earlier this week. ... Dragic had three steals and now has at least one steal in 50 of 63 games this season. ... The Rockets went 10-for-21 from 3-point range and have hit at least 10 3-pointers in 39 games this season. ... Asik started after he was listed as a "game-time" decision with a groin injury.

THE FACTS: All it took to wake up a sluggish Houston Rockets squad was a timeout from coach Kevin McHale.

After sleepwalking through the first quarter and a half of Wednesday's matchup with the Phoenix Suns, the Rockets answered their coach's call to crank up their defensive intensity and rolled to a 111-81 victory at Toyota Center. Six players scored in double figures for Houston (35-30), led by rookie Donatas Motiejunas' career-high 19 point effort on 7-for-12 shooting. James Harden finished with 18 points and four assists, while Jeremy Lin added 13 points and six assists for the Rockets, who have won seven of their last eight home games.

Wesley Johnson paced Phoenix (22-42), which has lost four of its last five games overall and six of eight on the road, with 15 points on 7-for-13 shooting. Former Rocket Goran Dragic added 11 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals in his first game in Houston since he left the club to sign with the Suns as a free agent last summer.

QUOTABLE: "At that one [timeout], everyone just understood that without defense we will not win. We just decided to go out -- everyone was fired up -- and we just blocked them out."

THE STAT: The Rockets' return to Houston for a season-high, seven-game homestand seemed to cure their ailing offense. After the Rockets were limited to 41.6 percent (99-for-238) shooting from the field and an average of only 29.3 points in the paint during a three-game road trip, Houston knocked down 51.3 percent of its shot attempts and poured in 50 points in the paint in Wednesday's rout.

TURNING POINT: The Rockets played with little intensity on the defensive end for the first quarter and a half, allowing the Suns to bury several uncontested shots. After Jared Dudley drained an open 3-pointer -- which came as a result of lazy defense by Harden and Greg Smith -- to put Phoenix ahead 43-38, McHale called a timeout to proverbially kick his team in the tail for its lethargic effort. The Rockets' defense took charge from there, limiting the Suns to 1-for-7 shooting and forcing four turnovers as Houston closed the first half on a 22-2 run to claim a 58-45 lead.

QUOTABLE II: "He's one of those kids, on his report card it says, 'Plays well with others.'"

HOT: The Rockets have connected on at least 10 3-pointers in a season-best, six-consecutive games, shooting 43.6 percent (85-for-195) from long distance during this stretch.

NOT: Former Rocket Luis Scola could not use his return to Houston as a springboard to snap his offensive slump, finishing with only four points on 2-for-5 shooting to go with four rebounds and two turnovers. The 6-foot-9 forward has averaged only 7.5 points on 33.3 percent (14-for-42) shooting and 2.2 turnovers over his last six games.

BAD MOVE: Dragic quickly picked up a pair of cheap fouls in a span of 73 seconds midway through the second quarter, which forced interim coach Lindsey Hunter to pull his starting point guard in favor of rookie Kendall Marshall. The Suns missed Dragic's leadership dearly. Houston's increased defensive pressure forced Marshall and his teammates to become indecisive and stagnant, transforming a competitive contest into a blowout.

QUOTABLE III: "That's probably the first time I've felt like we didn't compete as a unit ... Nothing is promised for none of us here, so our guys have to compete like every day is our last, and I didn't see that tonight. It's very disappointing, very embarrassing and unacceptable."

NOTABLE: The 18,132 in attendance gave a warm reception to former Rockets Dragic and Scola, who were playing their first game in Houston since they and the club parted ways last offseason, during the pre-game player introductions. The Rockets organization paid tribute to Scola's five seasons with Houston by playing a special video of his highlights during his time with the Rockets at the conclusion of the opening period. ... Suns center Jermaine O'Neal returned to the lineup after missing the previous four games to be with his 13-year-old daughter as she underwent successful heart surgery. ... The 30-point win is the Rockets' largest margin of victory over Phoenix in the history of both franchises. ... After Phoenix netted 24 second-chance points in Saturday's 107-105 win over Houston, the Rockets held the Suns to only four second-chance points Wednesday. Houston also turned the tables on the Suns in transition. After Phoenix recorded a 32-14 edge in fast-break points Saturday, the Rockets outscored the Suns 17-11 on the break Wednesday. ... Houston snapped a three-game losing streak against Phoenix. ... Rockets center Smith pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds. ... The Rockets improved to 18-2 this season when they drain at least 50.0 percent of their field-goal attempts. ... The Suns are now 7-26 on the road this season. ...
