Pistons-Warriors Preview

The Golden State Warriors appeared to be fading as they seek their first playoff appearance in six years. If their last game is any indication, though, they haven't completely lost the edge that made them look like a serious contender in the Western Conference for most of the season.

Wednesday night's matchup with visiting Detroit seems to set up favorably for the Warriors, as the Pistons - already caught in a tailspin - will likely be without starting point guard Brandon Knight.

The Warriors surprised the league with an impressive 30-17 start, but they've had trouble replicating that success. They lost 12 of 17 before Monday's dominant 92-63 home win over New York embodied what coach Mark Jackson has preached to his team all year: defense and rebounding.

Golden State is 27-8 when holding opponents under 100 points and 28-9 when outrebounding foes. But Monday was a rare combination of dominance as the Warriors (36-29) held the Knicks to 27.4 percent shooting, the lowest figure in the NBA this season, while also claiming a 59-42 rebounding advantage.

"That's a heck of a defensive night," Jackson said.

Detroit (23-43), which has lost six straight and nine of 10 after falling 103-90 at Utah on Monday, could have trouble matching Golden State on the boards. The Pistons have been outrebounded in 10 of their last 12 games.

Scoring could become a bigger challenge for the already offensively challenged Pistons, who average 94.3 points. Knight, second on the team with 13.8 points per game, is listed as doubtful after spraining his left ankle against the Jazz.

X-rays were negative, but the Pistons may still be without him for some time.

"The only thing I know is that it is not broke," said Brian Hill, who has coached Detroit for the last four games with Lawrence Frank away from the team to be with his ill wife.

"We will have to get more diagnosis than that, but it appears to be a very severe sprain right now."

The loss of Knight is another significant hit as the Pistons already lost leading shot blocker Andre Drummond to a fractured tailbone last month. Without Knight, Detroit could use better production from fellow guard Rodney Stuckey, who is averaging 4.9 points on 36.4 shooting over his last seven games.

Drummond's absence could make it even more difficult to slow down David Lee, who is averaging 20.4 points and 12.3 rebounds while shooting 57.1 percent in his last seven against the Pistons.

Lee missed Golden State's 103-93 home loss to Milwaukee on Saturday because of a bruised right knee but returned to finish with 21 points and 10 rebounds against the Knicks for his league-leading 42nd double-double.

The Warriors claimed a 104-97 victory in these teams' first matchup Dec. 5, their fourth win in five meetings. Klay Thompson scored a game-high 27 points on 9-of-13 shooting for Golden State.

Knight was limited to four points on 1-of-9 shooting with four turnovers.

Warriors hold off pesky Pistons, 105-97

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) David Lee has been able to do something this March that he rarely has for most of his eight-year NBA career: watch what is happening around the league with a vested interest in the outcome.

Even mundane days like Wednesday can turn into big nights.

The All-Star forward tuned into other games in the afternoon, helped the Golden State Warriors grind out a 105-97 victory over the Detroit Pistons and returned to his locker to see what went down while he had been on the court.

"I've been on a lot of teams where you're waiting for the season to be over," said Lee, who had 20 points, 15 rebounds and five assists. "It doesn't matter what else is going on because you're not in any kind of race. That's why this time of year is exciting and we're going to make the most of it."

Stephen Curry had 31 points and eight assists, and Jarrett Jack finished with 19 points and five assists off the bench to make sure the Warriors avoided a monumental setback. They improved to 4-2 on their season-high, seven-game homestand, which ends Friday against Chicago, and remained 1 1/2 games ahead of Houston for sixth place in the Western Conference.

Among the other news Golden State learned: The Los Angeles Lakers (34-32) lost 96-92 at Atlanta to fall three games behind the Warriors and stayed in the eighth and final playoff spot. The Lakers also lost star Kobe Bryant to a severely sprained left ankle. He is out indefinitely.

"We can just say we're worried about ourselves," said Lee, who has never been to the playoffs. "But all these other games do matter."

Not so much in Motown these days.

Rodney Stuckey scored 22 points and Kyle Singler had 16 in Detroit's seventh straight loss. Reserve Will Bynum added 16 points to help fill the void left by Brandon Knight, who sat out with a sprained left ankle.

Detroit now has had losing streaks of six (from Dec. 11-19), seven (presently) and eight (Oct. 31 to Nov. 12) games this season.

"The beginning of the game disappointed me the most because those first six possessions that they scored on, we made basically game-plan mistakes or just a lack of effort," said Pistons assistant coach Brian Hill, who is filling in while Lawrence Frank is attending to a family matter. "From that point on, I thought we played hard and I thought we played pretty well."

A seemingly one-sided matchup hardly looked like it for most of the night.

After crushing the New York Knicks 92-63 on Monday, Golden State's co-captains carried the Warriors through a game the team often looked lethargic and uninterested. Curry was 5 of 7 from 3-point range, and Lee had another strong performance while wearing a white wrap around his bruised left knee.

The Warriors outshot the Pistons 57 to 45 percent.

Curry connected on a corner 3-pointer, then hit another to cap a 15-5 run in the first 3:02. The crafty point guard swished a short jumper later in the first quarter to give Golden State a 23-11 lead that seemingly had them running away with another blowout win.

Instead, the Warriors relaxed and the Pistons piled up points.

Stuckey stole a pass from Lee that led to a put-back layup from Bynum on the other end to put Detroit ahead by three. With the shot-clock winding down, Curry made his fourth 3-pointer to tie the score at 50 at the half.

"I was upset because I understand what it takes to win in this league," Warriors coach Mark Jackson said. "It's not easy, no matter whom you're facing. I wanted to put them away when we could and not give them life."

Curry led the charge again in the third quarter, tossing in a pair of high-arcing finger rolls and assisting on some even higher-elevation dunks by Harrison Barnes, who had 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting. Curry later hit his fifth 3-pointer and made two free throws to put the Warriors up 80-68.

The pesky Pistons put up a fight until the end.

Bynum's pull-up shot sliced Golden State's lead to four midway through the fourth quarter. Jack answered with a jumper and a pair of free throws, and Klay Thompson's reverse layup put the Warriors in front 96-86 with 4:27 remaining.

Detroit briefly fouled center Andrew Bogut walking up the floor. He made 1 of 2 free throws before Bynum hit another shot to bring the Pistons within six.

Then Curry split two defenders off a pick-and-roll by dribbling through his legs. He stopped in the lane and swished in a floater that put the Warriors ahead 102-94 to cement the victory.

"It was a lot of ins and outs," Bynum said, "but defensively we still have to be a whole lot better."

NOTES: Warriors F Draymond Green sprained his left ankle in the first half and didn't return. He is day to day. ... Jackson, also an undersized guard who was infamously dunked on by Tom Chambers in 1989, applauded Knight's efforts for trying to stop Clippers C DeAndre Jordan's viral alley-oop in Detroit's loss at Los Angeles on Sunday. "I see people making jokes about it, but as a coach, you want him on your team," Jackson said.

THE FACTS: Stephen Curry celebrated his new status as the Golden State Warriors' all-time single-season leader in 3-pointers by dropping five more treys -- part of a 31-point night -- during a 105-97 victory against the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday night.

David Lee had 20 points, 15 rebounds and five assists as the Warriors (37-29) moved three games clear of the eighth-place Lakers (34-32) in the Western Conference standings.

With Brandon Knight held out due to a sprained ankle, Rodney Stuckey started in Detroit's backcourt and totaled 22 points, just his third 20-point game this season.

THE STAT: The Warriors went 41-for-72 from the field (56.9 percent), and only missed one shot in the final seven minutes of play -- a 3-point attempt hoisted by Jarrett Jack only because the shot clock was about to expire.

TURNING POINT: Detroit scored nine straight points to bridge the last two quarters, drawing within 80-77 at the 10:41 mark of the fourth. Jackson, who gave his second unit too much rope in the first half, reacted more quickly this time, calling timeout to get Lee and Andrew Bogut back on the floor earlier than planned. Golden State quickly ripped off an 8-2 burst to reassert control.

HOT: Jarrett Jack stayed after the Warriors' game Monday to put in extra shooting work after dropping his March shooting percentage to 28.9 percent, 23.5 percent on 3-pointers. The efforts paid off when Jack gashed Detroit's defense for 19 points and five assists off the bench.

HOTTER: Curry took possession of the Warriors' single-season record for 3-pointers when he rained a half-dozen against New York on Monday, although the achievement was overlooked in all the talk about Golden State's defense allowing its fewest points in just shy of 60 years. Wednesday, he drained his first two 3-pointers -- both pull-ups -- to become the first Warrior ever to reach 200 treys in a season; over his last nine games, Curry is 42-for-79 (53.2 percent) behind the arc. Assuming he misses no more time due to injury, Curry is on pace to reach 255 3-pointers this season, which would put him fourth on the NBA's list of single-season totals, behind Ray Allen (269, 2005-06 Seattle), Dennis Scott (267, 1995-96 Orlando) and George McCloud (257, 1995-96 Dallas).

NOT: Detroit center Greg Monroe went 4-for-16, even as the Pistons scored 50 points in the paint on the night.

ROOKIE WATCH: Warriors forward Harrison Barnes had four dunks out of six buckets, including three in the first seven minutes of the second half. The North Carolina product was matched up a former college rival, Duke's Kyle Singler, leading Jackson to quip, "I wish [Barnes] could play against a Duke guy every night."

NOTABLE: Jason Maxiell, returning to the lineup after a one-game absence due to a sprained ankle, returned to grab a season-high 14 rebounds for the Pistons. . . . Bogut played a season-high 32 minutes for the Warriors, with 10 rebounds, seven points, four assists, three blocks and two steals. . . . Detroit failed to block a shot for the first time since Feb. 28, 2012. . . . Warriors rookie forward Draymond Green suffered a sprained left ankle early in the second quarter and did not return. The team had no immediate pronouncement on his status.
