Wizards-Cavaliers Preview

Their best month of the season behind them, the Cleveland Cavaliers find themselves in the midst of yet another poor stretch.

With Kyrie Irving set to miss even more time after his latest injury, turning things around could prove difficult.

The Cavs go for their third win in as many meetings with Washington in 2012-13 on Tuesday night, though the Wizards will have star guard John Wall in the lineup for the first time in the season series.

Cleveland (21-42) went 7-5 in February and closed the month with a 4-1 stretch, but it's lost four of five since and the outlook doesn't appear any brighter going forward after Irving left a 100-96 loss at Toronto on Sunday. He suffered a sprained left shoulder during a collision on a drive to the basket and could be out a month - or even the rest of the regular season, as the team has only 19 games left.

Irving, among the top 10 in the NBA with 23.0 points per game, has already missed plenty of action. He sat out 11 games in November and December with a broken finger, as well as three games from Feb. 26-March 1 with a sore right knee.

"He's still very young and his body hasn't fully developed," coach Byron Scott said. "I'm just not that concerned about it, to be honest with you. All the injuries that he has gotten have been legitimate injuries. It's not something that keeps recurring over and over again."

Cleveland blew a 17-point lead to the Raptors as it continues to be plagued by bad third quarters. The Cavs have been outscored in that period in each of the last four games by a total of 42 points, averaging 17.3 points themselves during the third in that stretch.

The Cavaliers were outscored 33-19 by the Raptors in that period.

"We've got to come out and play like men in the third quarter," said forward Tristan Thompson, who has recorded double-doubles in three straight games and four of five. "It starts on the defensive end. We've got to be men and get stops and play together."

Irving averaged 27.5 points in wins over the Wizards in October and December, but with his absence and Wall being healthy, Cleveland may have trouble earning a victory this time. Washington (20-41) has the worst road record in the NBA at 5-24 and is averaging 86.4 points away from home, but it's coming off a 104-87 victory over Charlotte on Saturday.

"Don't talk to me about slumps," coach Randy Wittman said. "I don't want these guys looking at, 'This is a team that is struggling.' We've got to take care of business our way, and I thought we did that tonight."

The Wizards got the win without leading scorer Bradley Beal, who missed his third straight contest with a sprained left ankle. The guard could return Tuesday.

Trevor Ariza scored a season-high 26 against the Bobcats and has averaged 14.9 points - 5.5 above his season mark - in his last nine games while going 20 for 45 from 3-point range.

Despite the Wizards' lack of success away from home, they've held their last 11 road opponents to fewer than 100 points.

Wall has averaged 21.3 points in his past three games against Cleveland.

Cavs, without Irving, hold off Wizards 95-90

CLEVELAND (AP) The Cleveland Cavaliers showed they can win a close game without Kyrie Irving on Tuesday night.

Dion Waiters scored 20 points, including 12 in the final 7:29, and the Cavaliers held off a late run to beat the Washington Wizards 95-90.

Cleveland played its first game since Irving sprained his left shoulder Sunday against Toronto. The All-Star point guard, who watched the game from the bench with his left arm in a sling, could miss the next month - and maybe the rest of this season. The Cavaliers are 5-10 without him this season.

Cleveland definitely missed its star player in the beginning, falling behind 11-0 in the game's first two minutes. Waiters did his best Irving imitation with the game on the line by hitting a jumper, converting on a drive, scoring on a dunk and making 6 of 8 free throws.

"Everybody lives for the moment, whether it's knocking down free throws or hitting big shots," said Waiters, who hit four foul shots in the final 13.1 seconds to secure the win.

Waiters, selected with the No. 4 pick in the draft, will take on more responsibility with Irving sidelined.

"Coach told me to keep attacking," he said. "Either to get to the basket or find an open teammate. That's what I was trying to do."

Waiters had no explanation for Cleveland's poor start, which caused Cleveland coach Byron Scott to call timeout and bench all of his starters with the exception of Shaun Livingston, who has moved into the point guard spot with Irving sidelined.

"I can't really answer that," Waiters said. "The way we came out was terrible. It just was ugly."

John Wall led Washington with a season-high 27 points, but the Wizards couldn't convert down the stretch and have league's worst road record at 5-25. Cleveland swept the three-game series from Washington, a fact that didn't get by Wall.

"We got swept by Cleveland and Detroit, who are good teams and everything, but we just felt like we were better than them," he said. "Instead, we went 0-7, which is tough."

Wall also had season highs with 14 assists and seven rebounds. Emeka Okafor scored 18 points and had 11 rebounds, while Martell Webster added 17 points, including five 3-pointers.

Rookie guard Bradley Beal, who entered the night as the Wizards' leading scorer, missed his fourth straight game with a sprained left ankle.

Cleveland placed six players in double figures. Alonzo Gee had 17, while Tristan Thompson scored 13 points and had 14 rebounds. Livingston and Wayne Ellington added 12 points apiece. C.J. Miles added 10.

Cleveland led 90-78 with 4:29 remaining, but the Wizards cut the margin to 91-88 with 45 seconds left. Livingston, who was claimed off waivers from the Wizards on Dec. 25, won a crucial jump ball from Nene with 20 seconds remaining to keep a possession alive, and Waiters came through at the line.

Scott was in a much better mood following the game than he was early in it.

"They didn't want to play, so I took them out," he said of his mass benching in the first quarter. "Simple as that. I was going to do the same thing in the third quarter. ... My patience ran thin. I was tired of what I was seeing, so I made changes."

Wall, who was 13 of 14 from the line, was the No. 1 pick in the draft in 2010 while Irving was chosen first the following season. The two won't meet this season, as Wall missed the first two games while he came back from a leg injury. The Cavaliers are 9-21 in games Irving has missed the last seasons.

The Wizards were 16 for 16 from the foul line in the first half.

The Cavaliers used a 16-7 run to end the third quarter and took a 76-65 lead into the final period. The spurt was sparked by a pair of 3-pointers from Gee, a jumper by Luke Walton as the shot clock expired and a reverse layup by Ellington.

Washington led 33-20 after one quarter, but Thompson scored all 11 of his first-half points in the second period as the Cavaliers rallied to lead 50-49 at halftime.

"The second and third quarters was when we really lost the game," Wall said. "It was a game of runs and they outhustled us at the end. We just didn't get it done."

NOTES: G Garrett Temple made his second consecutive start in Beal's spot. ... Wizards coach Randy Wittman isn't sure when Beal will return. "It could be a day. It could be a week. We'll just have to wait and see," he said. ... Cavaliers F Omri Casspi (appendectomy) was active for the first time since Feb. 20. He was stricken with appendicitis on Feb. 23, just before Cleveland's game in Orlando. Casspi has not played in a game since Feb. 6 against Charlotte and has not scored a point since Jan. 22 against Boston. ... G Daniel Gibson, who will see more playing time with Irving out, appeared for the first time since March 4.

THE FACTS: Rookie shooting guard Dion Waiters scored 12 of his team-high 20 points in the fourth quarter, leading the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 95-90 win over the Washington Wizards at Quicken Loans Arena. Power forward Tristan Thompson added 13 points and a game-best 14 rebounds for the Cavaliers, who trailed by 13 after the first quarter. Wizards point guard John Wall amassed season-highs of 27 points, seven rebounds and 14 assists, while center Emeka Okafor collected 18 points and 11 rebounds. Washington has the worst road record in the NBA at 5-24.

THE STAT: The Cavaliers completed a season-series sweep of Washington for the first time since 1991-1992, when the Wizards were known as the Bullets. Cleveland went 2-0 at home and 1-0 on the road against Washington, but only outscored the Wizards by 18 total points. ... The Cavaliers improved to 5-10 this season -- and 9-21 all-time -- without All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving in uniform. Irving suffered a sprained left shoulder Sunday in Toronto and could miss the rest of the campaign.

TURNING POINT: After the Wizards took an 11-0 lead on three Martell Webster 3-pointers and an Okafor jumper, Cleveland coach Byron Scott benched starters Waiters, Thompson, small forward Alonzo Gee, and center Tyler Zeller. Scott's strategic move -- just 2:06 into the game -- worked wonders. Waiters, Thompson and Gee played with fire once they returned to the court in the second quarter, combining for 50 points, 22 rebounds and nine assists the rest of the way.

QUOTABLE II: "I was very upset about the benching, but at the same time, I respect what (Scott) did. The way we came out was terrible. It was ugly. We came out flat and with no energy, and you can't do that in the NBA."

HOT: Cavaliers point guard Shaun Livingston had 12 points on 6-for-9 shooting with a team-high six assists. In four starts filling in for Irving, he is averaging 13.0 points and 3.8 assists with a .502 field goal percentage. ... Thompson posted his fourth straight double-double, giving him 24 on the season. In his last 38 games, the second-year pro is averaging 13.5 points and a team-high 10.5 rebounds. ... Wizards power forward Nene had 15 points and 10 rebounds, joining Wall and Okafor in the double-double club. ... Wall was 13-for-14 from the foul line, making his first 10.

NOT: Wizards shooting guard Bradley Beal missed his fourth straight game with a sprained left ankle. Washington coach Randy Wittman says the rookie remains "day to day. It could be a day, it could be a week until he's ready." ... The Wizards are 2-10 in their last 12 visits to Cleveland. ... Washington's reserves were outscored 29-11. Point guard A.J. GOOD MOVE: Wall relentlessly attacked the rim against Cleveland's young post players, setting Wizards season-highs in free throws made (13) and attempted (14) in 37 strong minutes. "I was just being a little more aggressive and trying to get into the paint tonight," the third-year pro explained. "I knew Tristan (Thompson) was their only real shot-blocker, so I tried to attack everywhere else."

BAD MOVE: Livingston knew he was the only healthy point guard on the Cavaliers, but he still picked up two fouls in the first 10 minutes. His second whistle came 40 feet from the basket against Wall, forcing the overmatched Waiters to run the offense for extended stretches. Fortunately, Cleveland power forward Luke Walton lent him a hand, dishing out five assists in 18 minutes.

NOTABLE: Beal, who was the third overall pick in the NBA Draft, was injured on March 3 against Philadelphia. Waiters went one selection later to Cleveland. ... Wittman was 62-102 as the coach of the Cavaliers in 1999-2000 and 2000-2001. ... Cleveland small forward Omri Casspi (appendectomy) was active for the first time since Feb. 20, but did not play. The native of Israel last appeared in a game on Feb. 6 against Charlotte, and has not scored since Jan. 22 against Boston.
