The Dallas Mavericks are trying to climb into the Western Conference playoff picture, and more big performances from Vince Carter could help them reach that goal.

Dallas looks to match its longest winning streak of the season at four games Tuesday night as it visits the surging Milwaukee Bucks.

After 12 consecutive postseason appearances, the Mavericks (29-33) are in danger of missing the playoffs. They sit in a 10th-place tie with Portland in the West, three games out of the eighth and final spot.

Dallas, though, appears to be getting hot at just the right time thanks in large part to Carter. The 36-year-old former All-Star has gone 12 for 23 from 3-point range and averaged 16.0 points in helping the Mavericks win four of five this month.

"It's not necessarily just scoring, but, in general, I understand what's going on and I just made it my business to be locked in and want to do whatever is needed," he said.

Carter led the way with 22 points and a season high-tying nine rebounds in 25 minutes off the bench Sunday in a 100-77 victory at Minnesota. The Mavericks have won eight of their last nine when Carter scores at least 14.

"We depend on him for so much," coach Rick Carlisle said. "Playmaking off the bench, scoring off the bench, defense, rebounding. He really plays a terrific all-around game, so he's essential to whatever we're doing."

Dallas, which opened a four-game road trip with Friday's 102-99 victory at Detroit, last won four in a row Jan. 10-16, and it hasn't won three straight road games in more than a year.

"We got to keep an edge as we keep going on this trip," Carlisle said. "Each game is too meaningful with everything we've been through and everything else. We owe it to ourselves and everybody that follows us, we got to stay right in this and really focus."

The Mavericks, though, have dropped three of four to Milwaukee (32-29), including a 95-90 home defeat Feb. 26. Carter shot 0 of 8 and finished with two points that night.

The Bucks are coming off their sixth win in seven games, 115-113 at Sacramento on Sunday. Monta Ellis continued his superb play with 29 points and nine assists and Mike Dunleavy scored 13 of his 16 points after taking an elbow to the head from Kings center DeMarcus Cousins late in the third quarter.

Milwaukee improved to 15-3 when Dunleavy scores at least 13 points.

"Something like that gets you going," Dunleavy said. "I was able to knock down a couple of shots after that. It was a crazy game all things considered. We were fortunate to get out of here with a win."

Leading the team with 19.1 points per game, Ellis has averaged 26.1 on 50.0 percent shooting over the last seven games. He scored 22 last month against the Mavericks and has averaged 25.0 in his last 15 matchups against Dallas, 14 of them while with Golden State.

The Bucks may need another big effort from their backcourt after they were outscored 60-50 in the paint Sunday with Ersan Ilyasova and Larry Sanders both out. Those players are uncertain to suit up due to knee injuries.

Ilyasova is averaging 17.4 points and 8.0 rebounds over his last 21 games. Sanders leads the NBA with 3.2 blocks per game and the team with 9.1 boards.

J.J. Redick also missed Sunday's win due to an ankle injury but expects to face Dallas.

Mavs beat Bucks 115-108 for 4th straight win

MILWAUKEE (AP) Vince Carter may not be able to throw down big dunks like he used to, though he can still knock down big shots.

Carter hit three key 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and scored 23 points off the bench as the Dallas Mavericks won their fourth straight with a 115-108 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday night.

"I felt in the groove," Carter said. "The basket just seemed extremely big, and I felt comfortable with my shot. I was just in the flow of the game. A couple of shots, once I let them go, I happened to look down and see the 3-point line was up there. Oops. I know if I don't make them, Coach is going to yell. But I was just prepared. I had my feet set, in rhythm, just in attack mode."

Carter scored 13 points in the fourth quarter to help the Mavericks match their longest winning streak of the season. They have won five of six.

During that stretch, Carter is averaging 17.2 points while shooting 55.5 percent from beyond the arc. Not bad for a guy who used to be known more for his dunking skills than his long-distance shooting.

"He was definitely half-man, half-amazing today," said guard Mike James. "Some of them shots, I was like, `You're not supposed to shoot that shot. But, OK. That went in. That was amazing."'

The Mavericks, who are three games out of the eighth spot in the Western Conference playoff race, know now is the time to get going if they are to make the postseason for the 13th consecutive time.

"We know time is short, and urgency is high," coach Rick Carlisle said. "We're going to let it all hang out. We're going to throw the kitchen sink at everybody, and we're going to hit every arena with guns blazing. That's just how it's got to be."

Dirk Nowitzki added 19 points, 17 in the first half, and 11 rebounds, while O.J. Mayo had 14 points. Mavericks rookie and former Marquette star Jae Crowder, last year's Big East player of the year, was one off his career high with 14 points.

Monta Ellis scored 32 points for the Bucks, giving him 20 or more in all six of Milwaukee's games this month. Ellis has been putting up big numbers since the All-Star break, averaging 23.7 points.

"That's one thing I did evaluate when I went back home for the break," Ellis said. "I was taking too many jump shots. I was settling. I wasn't really driving like I used to. I'm just trying to get back into it."

Mike Dunleavy added 18 points while J.J. Redick had 17. Larry Sanders had 13 points and 12 rebounds.

After being on a tear the last five games offensively, Bucks guard Brandon Jennings was held in check. He scored four points - matching his season low. Jennings played less than 3 1/2 minutes in the final quarter.

The eighth-place Bucks missed a chance to gain ground for the sixth seed in the East, with both Boston and Atlanta losing Tuesday night. The Bucks are a game behind both teams in the playoff race.

"Every time you lose a game now being in the position we are in, it has significance," Bucks coach Jim Boylan said. "We are trying to climb up and because we are trying to secure our spot, it definitely stings a little bit."

The Bucks set the high-scoring pace early with a season-high 35 points in the first quarter and led 35-28. The Mavericks stormed back, finishing the second quarter on a 27-10 run to take a 63-55 lead into the break. They never trailed in the second half.

The Mavericks opened the second half on a 12-2 run to extend their lead to 18. The Bucks countered with an 11-0 run to cut the lead to 77-70 midway through the third.

Dallas was able to push its lead up to 90-79 heading into the final period.

Dallas went up 14 early in the fourth, but Milwaukee responded with a 7-0 burst to cut the lead to 98-91. Carter then drained a 3 with 5:30 left to push the lead back to 10, and after Milwaukee cut it to 101-96, Carter answered with another 3 with 4:16 left.

The Bucks cut the lead to 106-100 on Ellis' layup before Carter hit his third from behind the arc in the quarter with 2:27 left. Carter sealed the victory with a layup with 1:39 to play.

"We knew this was going to be one of those persistence games, where you've got to keep chipping away, and you've got to keep hanging in," Carlisle said. "They did, and they deserved to win."

Notes: Mavericks forward Shawn Marion missed his third consecutive game with a left calf contusion. ... Bucks forward Luc Richard Mbah a Moute was out with a turf toe injury. He is listed as day-to-day. ...The Mavericks have won for just the seventh time ever in Milwaukee. . Crowder said he felt comfortable playing his first game back in Milwaukee since Marquette senior night a year ago. "I played a lot of games here in this arena," Crowder said. "I just played pretty free. And whenever the opportunity came for me to knock down a shot or play good defense, I stepped up."

THE FACTS: Vince Carter put on a big-shot clinic in the fourth quarter, leading the Dallas Mavericks to a 115-108 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday night at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.

Carter made three huge 3-pointers -- each one interrupting Milwaukee momentum -- and had 13 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter as Dallas (30-33) won its fourth straight game.

Monta Ellis led all scorers with 32 points, but the Bucks (32-30) lost a chance to pick up ground on the teams immediately ahead of them in Eastern Conference playoff positioning.

THE STAT: Mike James is a 37-year-old journeyman who joined the Mavericks on a 10-day contract back on Jan. 8. He's even spent a couple games in the NBA D-League this season. Yet he completely outplayed Milwaukee's Brandon Jennings, outscoring him 13-4 and adding seven assists and six rebounds.

TURNING POINT: The Bucks scored seven straight points to pull within 98-91 with 6:28 left when Carter took control and knocked down a 25-foot 3-pointer. After J.J. Redick pulled Milwaukee within 101-96 with 4:39 left, Carter swished a 26-footer. Finally, after Ellis got Milwaukee within 106-100 on a driving layup with 2:47 left, Carter drilled a 26-footer with 2:27 left, and the Bucks ran out of time and momentum.

QUOTABLE II: "Vince got hot, obviously at the right time. We had Dirk (Nowitzki) out of the game. He needed a blow there in the fourth quarter, and Vince hit two or three in a row that were hellacious shots."

HOT: Carter scored his 23 points on just 10 shots, thanks to 4-for-6 shooting behind the arc and 7-for-7 shooting from the free throw line.

NOT: Jennings was just 2-for-7 shooting and was never a factor in the game. He finished with four points and five assists after averaging 19.2 points and 13.6 assists in the previous five games.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Bucks center Larry Sanders posted his 18th double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds and padded his league lead with four more blocks.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Mavs broadcaster Brad Davis got a surprise on the court more than an hour before tip-off when he heard his name being called out. The person calling to him? His brother Mickey, a Bucks player from 1972-76 who was in town as a guest of the Bucks. "I told him, 'You should have called me, I could have gotten you tickets.' He said, 'Sen. (Herb) Kohl (the Bucks owner) took care of it.'" Mickey Davis played in the 1974 Finals for the Bucks, who lost to the Boston Celtics in seven games.

GOOD MOVE: With Jennings struggling, Bucks coach Jim Boylan pulled Jennings and went with Redick and Ellis in the backcourt for the final 8:32.

ROOKIE WATCH: Mavericks forward Jae Crowder started in place of injured Shawn Marion (bruised calf) and posted 14 points and a career-best eight rebounds. Crowder was playing in the Bradley Center for the first time as a pro after playing there four seasons with Marquette University.

NOTABLE: Bucks forward Luc Richard Mbah a Moute missed the game with turf toe and was limping noticeably after the game. Mike Dunleavy started in his place and had 18 points and six rebounds. ... Crowder was asked before the game if he was aware that Bucks coach Jim Boylan was one of the starters on Marquette's 1977 NCAA Championship team. "Oh, wooooooooowww," Crowder said in surprise. "I did not know that. Now I'll congratulate him when I see him." ... The Bucks fell to 16-15 at home. They're also 16-15 on the road. ... Nowitzki had 19 points and 11 rebounds. ... The Bucks remained 1 ½ games behind both Atlanta and Boston for sixth and seventh in playoff positioning. ... The Dallas bench outscored Milwaukee's, 55-34.
