MIAMI (AP) - LeBron James once carried a team to 66 wins. Ray Allen played for a club that won 19 consecutive games. Dwyane Wade led a team that finished with the Eastern Conference's best record.

For each, it's a footnote in a season where no championship was won.

There's no arguing that the Miami Heat are playing better than any other team in the NBA right now. They've won 18 straight games, are sitting atop the league standings and have a very real chance of wrapping up the No. 1 seed in the East playoffs by the end of the month. While all that sounds good, it's not changing the singular priority of this Heat season.

Championship-or-bust was the thinking Miami carried into this year, and not even the seventh-longest winning streak in NBA history has changed that.

"It's not our goal," James said. "Our goal isn't to win games consecutive. Our goal is to win a championship. Right now, our goal is to get better each and every game, to continue to improve. That was never one of our goals coming into the season, see how many games we'd win in a row. Our goal is to win a championship and not take any shortcuts in that process."

Miami (47-14) will try for its 19th straight win Tuesday night, when the Heat play host to the Atlanta Hawks - a team that's 0-3 against the reigning NBA champions this season. After that, a trip to Philadelphia awaits on Wednesday, to face a 76ers team that has lost 13 straight regular-season meetings with Miami.

Win on Tuesday, and the Heat would match the fifth-longest winning streak in NBA history.

Win Tuesday and Wednesday, and then it becomes truly rarefied air, because Miami would be just the fourth team to ever win 20 straight in the same season.

"You don't want to take a team like this for granted," coach Erik Spoelstra said. "We've talked about this with our group for the last few days. It's a special group. It's a special opportunity. Nothing is guaranteed. We're going after something that's an unknowable future. But we have an opportunity, a legitimate opportunity, so we have to make the most of every day we have together."

The streak's latest addition came Sunday night, when even on a rare subpar scoring night from James, the Heat rolled past Indiana 105-91 in a game where Miami took control with a huge start to the third quarter and was never seriously threatened again.

Sunday's win was significant for many reasons, namely that the Pacers are the closest thing the Heat have to a nemesis these days in the East, that they were 2-0 against Miami this season and that they were the last team to beat the defending champions way back on Feb. 1.

In the five-plus weeks since, all the Heat have done is take what was a close race in the East and make it a total runaway, assume the top spot in the NBA standings and become the first team to clinch a playoff spot - not that getting one was ever, ever in doubt.

"Right now, honestly, it doesn't really feel like we are on this kind of win streak," Wade said. "We are just coming in and we're just taking care of business. We come in every day when coach calls us in, and we do our work and we come back and we just play. We're not in the locker room saying, 'Aw, we're on this win streak and it's amazing.' To us, we're just playing basketball."

They've won six straight against the Hawks (34-28), who have lost five of six to begin March - including four in a row on the road - to fall into a tie for sixth in the East.

Atlanta is dangerously close to the No. 8 spot, which would almost certainly mean a first-round matchup with the Heat. The Hawks were quickly aware of their next challenge following Saturday's 93-80 home loss to Brooklyn.

"We have a tough task ahead of us," Al Horford said. "We have to regroup and go to Miami."

The Hawks' best hope may be a huge performance from Horford, who has posted four straight double-doubles and is averaging 22.9 points on 62.3 percent shooting in his last 13 games.

The big man has managed 19.0 points per contest while shooting 65.8 percent against the Heat this season, but teammate Josh Smith is hitting just 36.0 percent from the field while the Hawks have averaged 90.3 points.

Heat streak now 19, top Hawks 98-81

MIAMI (AP) Standing at his locker after yet another victory, LeBron James finally acknowledged the obvious.

This winning streak is something for the Miami Heat to savor.

Dwyane Wade scored 23 points and on a night where the stat sheet would suggest a struggle, the Heat rolled once again, extending their winning streak to 19 games and leading wire-to-wire in beating the Atlanta Hawks 98-81 on Tuesday.

"Let's be honest, guys," James said. "We're not sitting here and saying this is not something special. This is an unbelievable streak that we're on. We're playing great basketball. We're winning in different phases of the game, we're playing different styles, we've won every game, on the road, at home, double-overtime games, end-of-regulation games, whatever the case may be."

James scored 15 points and Chris Bosh and Mario Chalmers added 14 apiece for the Heat, who matched the fifth-longest streak in NBA history. They will try for their 20th straight win on Wednesday at Philadelphia, the start of a five-game trip.

Only three teams have won at least 20 consecutive games in the same season: the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers (33), the 2007-08 Houston Rockets (22) and the 1970-71 Milwaukee Bucks (20). The Washington Capitols also won 20 straight, spanning the end of the 1947-48 season and the start of the 1948-49 campaign.

"Ten is enough for me," Bosh said. "Twenty's cool. I'd take it."

Josh Smith scored 15 for the Hawks, who got 12 apiece from Al Horford and Jeff Teague.

"Miami is playing very well right now. You have to give credit where credit is due," Hawks coach Larry Drew said. "Coach (Erik) Spoelstra and his staff over there are doing a great job. Their team is really moving the basketball, they are playing together, they are playing at a very, very high level right now, and they're really good right now. We just got beat by a really good basketball team."

That is, by a really good basketball team that had something really far removed from a really good offensive night.

The Heat shot only 43 percent and James was just 3 for 11 from the field, with the field-goal total matching his lowest from any regular-season game in more than three years.

And they won by 17.

"We read the game, we find ways to win, we find ways within the game that we can make adjustments," Wade said. "So yeah, it is kind of slowing down a little bit."

Ray Allen scored 12 and Udonis Haslem grabbed 11 rebounds for the Heat. The crowd was 20,350, a record at AmericanAirlines Arena.

Miami now leads San Antonio by 1 1/2 games in the race for the NBA's best record and is atop the Eastern Conference by 9 1/2 games over Indiana and New York, who were both idle Tuesday. The Heat (48-14) have 20 games left, while the Pacers have 19 and the Knicks 21.

It was the first game where the Heat went without trailing since Feb. 14, when they won at Oklahoma City in a surprisingly one-sided NBA Finals rematch. They've needed buzzer-beaters and double-overtimes and big rallies to win several times since, often against opponents who won't be headed to the playoffs, teams like Orlando and Cleveland and Sacramento.

The Hawks are headed to the postseason - barring a most improbable collapse, anyway - but this one was never in doubt.

Seven Miami players logged more than 3 1/2 minutes of time in the first quarter, all seven of them scored, and the snowball started rolling. James was falling down near the 3-point line on one possession, yet still had the sense to just tap the ball to Wade for a layup that gave Miami an early 17-8 lead. And later, after Haslem missed inside, he got the rebound and fed Allen for a step-back corner 3-pointer that swished.

Yes, it's going that well for Miami right now.

"Leading with our defense has been the key for us," Wade said. "When we come out defensive minded from the beginning of the game, it gets us into the game, it gets us on the offensive end, we're moving the ball. We have been playing well offensively all year, but defense is the key."

The Hawks closed to 41-40 midway through the second quarter, the third - and last - time they were within a point. Miami needed just over two minutes to score the next 10 points, the run both starting and ending with 3-pointers from Chalmers, and the margin was 51-40.

As if the Heat needed any more help late in the first half, the often-enigmatic Smith gave them a little boost.

For no apparent reason, Smith fouled Bosh with 0.1 seconds left until intermission - doing so about 80 feet from the Heat basket. Miami was in the bonus, so Bosh took two free throws, made both, and the Heat went into the break with a 57-44 lead.

An hour later, they were packing for Philadelphia and a chance to win No. 20.

"It's a privilege for us to get in our cars and hop on a plane and get into Philly at 4 a.m. after this win and do this again tomorrow night," Spoelstra said. "That's the way we're going to approach it. No excuses."

NOTES: James was called for goaltending after blocking a shot by Ivan Johnson late in the third quarter. James didn't like the call, and if that wasn't enough, he swatted the ball into the leg of Bosh's wife, Adrienne, who was seated courtside. She was fine. ... The Hawks lost Teague with 3:08 left in the third quarter after he turned his left ankle. He returned to the bench later in the period after getting re-taped, but did not return to the game. ... Heat assistant coach David Fizdale shared a warm embrace with Drew a few moments before the game. Fizdale is a former Atlanta assistant.

THE FACTS: The Heat extended their franchise-record streak to 19 straight Tuesday with a 98-81 win over the Hawks at AmericanAirlines Arena.

Miami, which never trailed in the victory, goes for its 20th consecutive win Wednesday in Philadelphia.

The Heat led by double-digits for most of the second half behind a strong defensive effort. They held the Hawks to just 42 percent shooting. Guard Dwyane Wade led all scorers with 23 points on 9-for-18 shooting. LeBron James, who shot just 3-for-11, finished with 15 points while center Chris Bosh and guard Mario Chalmers each had 14.

Josh Smith led the Hawks with 15 points.

The Heat swept the season series against the Hawks, whom they could see in the first round of the playoffs. Atlanta is just one game ahead of the Milwaukee Bucks for the No. 8 seed.

THE STAT: The Heat backcourt of Wade and Chalmers combined to shoot 14-for-26 from the field.

TURNING POINT: After the Hawks pulled to within one in the second quarter, the Heat closed the half with a 16-4 run to take control.

HOT: Wade turned in yet another efficient performance. A day after being named Eastern Conference Player of the Week, he continued to show the Heat aren't just a one-man team. Wade also had six assists and recorded his second straight game with at least five steals.

NOT: James had an off night in the scoring department for a second straight game. He was still able to impact the game with his passing and rebounding. He also got to the free throw line 12 times (making nine).

GOOD MOVE: Balance continues to be the key for the Heat. This marked the third straight game they had at least five players score in double figures. They are at their most dangerous when they receive strong contributions from the supporting cast.

BAD MOVE: The Hawks failed to take advantage of a rare off night from James, who missed eight of his first 11 field-goal attempts. With James struggling, Atlanta allowed Ray Allen and Chalmers to hurt them.

NOTABLE: The Heat improved to 30-3 at home. ... Heat forward Shane Battier was in uniform despite missing the morning shootaround because of flu symptoms. ... Miami needs one victory to become just the fourth team to win 20 straight games.
