Trail Blazers-Spurs Preview

As badly as the San Antonio Spurs' homestand began - a loss to a woeful team followed by a major injury to a star player - it now appears to be going really well.

It wouldn't seem the road-troubled Portland Trail Blazers should get in the way Friday night before the Spurs - maybe even surprising themselves as owners of the league's best record - face the next-best team in the Western Conference.

San Antonio's six-game stretch at home started last Wednesday with a 105-101 overtime loss to a Phoenix team which entered with the West's worst record. Two nights later, All-Star point guard Tony Parker was lost for a month after spraining his ankle against Sacramento.

However, the Spurs won that game by 28 and have posted two more easy wins without him, defeating Detroit 114-75 on Sunday and using a dominant second half to beat Chicago 101-83 on Wednesday.

The Spurs (48-14) have maintained the best record in the NBA despite a bevy of injuries and Miami winning 16 in a row. Plus, their conference lead has grown a bit over Oklahoma City, which visits San Antonio on Monday night to end the homestand.

"We see Miami play and Oklahoma City, the amount of talent they have, the depth, they make crazy shots. And we look at the standings, and we're on top," said a seemingly amazed Manu Ginobili, who mentioned himself and Tim Duncan among the many lengthy absences San Antonio has endured.

"Tony's out now. Remarkable what we are accomplishing this season. But as we always say, no one remembers the No. 1 seed or No. 2 seed. We gotta keep going, keep improving."

San Antonio has outscored its last three opponents in the paint by 20.0 per game while the bench has averaged 52.7 points. That unit has been without Gary Neal (Achilles) in four of the past five games, but many others continue to step up.

Off the bench, Ginobili has totaled 35 points in the two games Parker has missed, and former Blazer Patty Mills has averaged 10.3 on 76.5 percent shooting over the last three. Duncan has posted a season-best four consecutive double-doubles, and Kawhi Leonard has scored at least 14 in five straight games.

"That's a championship team right there," Bulls center Joakim Noah said. "They do all the little things."

San Antonio could be in for another big night offensively against Portland, giving up averages of 107.3 points and 50.3 percent shooting during a seven-game road losing streak. The Blazers (28-32) haven't had a longer one in a season since opening 0-9 away from home in 2007-08.

They began a three-game trip with a 91-85 defeat to Memphis on Wednesday following a 3-1 homestand. Portland is 3 1/2 games behind Utah for the West's eighth and final playoff spot.

"It is uphill, but we are still there, even with that loss," coach Terry Stotts told the league's official website. "We just have to roll some wins together. That will take care of itself, but we have to go into San Antonio and get a win there."

The Blazers haven't visited San Antonio since losing two trips last season by a combined 51 points. The teams have split two meetings in Portland this season.

Damian Lillard's 29 points keyed a 98-90 win over the Spurs on Dec. 13 in the last matchup. The Rookie of the Year candidate has scored at least 20 in four straight games.

LaMarcus Aldridge has averaged 25.3 points in his last four matchups with the Spurs, but he's averaged 10.3 and shot 23.3 percent in Portland's last three road games.

Lillard leads Blazers to 136-106 rout of Spurs

SAN ANTONIO (AP) The Portland Trail Blazers handed the San Antonio Spurs their worst loss in the Tim Duncan era, winning by such a large margin that it stunned them almost as much as the Western Conference's top team.

Damian Lillard had 35 points and nine assists and Portland routed San Antonio 136-106 on Friday night to set a record for the most points by an opponent at the AT&T Center and hand the Spurs their second-worst home loss ever.

"To come in here and win is hard enough," Trail Blazers coach Terry Stotts said. "To do it in that fashion is pretty remarkable."

LaMarcus Aldridge added 26 points and J.J. Hickson had 23 points and 11 rebounds for Portland. Eric Maynor added 20 points off the bench and Wesley Matthews had 15 points.

Tim Duncan had 18 points to lead the Spurs, who were playing their third straight game without Tony Parker. The Spurs' All-Star point guard is expected to miss four weeks with a Grade 2 left ankle sprain.

"Of course," Lillard said when asked if it would have been different with Parker in the lineup. "He's one of their best players. It would have been a completely different game. I might be more tired from chasing him around. But that doesn't really matter, `cause he didn't play."

Perhaps it may not have been too different.

Lillard had 29 points, seven rebounds and six assists in Portland's 98-90 win over Parker and the Spurs on Dec. 13 and he followed it with a similar performance Friday.

Lillard was 12 for 20 from the field and 3 for 4 on 3s while handing out six assists with no turnovers in 40 minutes.

"He was pretty special," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "He just bid his time in the first half. Aldridge was playing so well (in the first half). In the second half, Lillard just took over and we just couldn't stop him."

The inability to stop Lillard led to the second worst home loss in San Antonio's history, trailing only the 33-point defeat to the Toronto Raptors on Feb. 19, 1997, at the Alamodome in Popovich's first season as head coach. The Spurs lost David Robinson to injury earlier that season, but would be awarded the top overall pick that offseason and selected Duncan.

Duncan was on hand for this loss however, and not even an energized performance by the All-Star forward could slow the Trail Blazers.

"It was a combination of us playing bad and them playing well," Duncan said. "Obviously, we'll try and learn from it. There will be a bunch of film session involved with this one."

What they will see is Portland continually beating to the basket and getting shots off before defenders could close. San Antonio had difficulty keeping pace with Portland's athleticism in losing for only the fourth time in 29 home games this season.

The Trail Blazers were 13 for 21 on 3-pointers and also shot 61 percent overall from the field to upend the Spurs, who entered the game with the league's best record but dropped behind Miami (46-14), which beat Philadelphia 102-93 on Friday night.

"They had a great night shooting," Popovich said. "That's a bad combination if they're doing that and we're playing poor defense. I can't remember a night where we played that poorly and, at the same time, the other team shot the heck out of it. That's going to make it tough."

Hickson and Aldridge dominated early, combining for 33 points and seven rebounds in the first half. Lillard scored 25 points in the second half as Portland outscored San Antonio 46-24 in the final quarter.

"J.J. (Hickson) and L.A. (Aldridge) carried us in the first half," Stotts said. "Damien had a solid game. When we went small and spaced the floor it gave him a lot of opportunities."

San Antonio closed within 107-95 on a 6-0 run, but Lillard ended the streak with a 3 that led Maynor to shout "Man down!" as he waited to enter the game. Lillard's 3 sparked a 14-4 run that included three 3s and three free throws by Portland's rookie point guard after he was fouled attempting a 3.

Lillard was 2 for 2 on 3s in the fourth and 4 for 6 from the field overall.

"It's like a confidence," Lillard said. "You feel like everything is fine. When I was scoring and making plays, I felt like we were going to be fine. If we needed a bucket, I was going to be able to get a bucket. If we needed a play to be made, I was going to be able to do it."

Hickson scored 19 points in the first half, going 8 for 11 on a mix jumpers and layups against several Spurs defenders.

Manu Ginobili and Kawhi Leonard added 16 apiece for San Antonio and Cory Joseph had 13 and Danny Green 10. San Antonio shot 52 percent from the field, but were only 6 for 19 from 3s.

Leonard and Joseph got the Spurs off to a speedy start, scoring nine and six points respectively in the opening quarter. Duncan had 12 points and five rebounds in the first half as the Spurs tied the game at 57-all at the half.

Duncan's points included stripping Aldridge of a defensive rebound, beating two players to the loose ball and driving to the basket for a one-handed dunk that gave the Spurs a 29-27 lead with 6.0 seconds left in the first quarter.

NOTES: Portland C Meyers Leonard left the game early in the second quarter when he injured his right ankle after stepping on Duncan's foot. His status is unknown. Trail Blazers W Sasha Pavlovic (quadriceps) and G Elliot Williams both missed the game with injuries. ... San Antonio is 11-23 this season when trailing after the third quarter. ... With his 26 points, Aldridge became the only player in the league with 1,200 points and 500 rebounds this season. ... San Antonio celebrated military appreciation night, honoring all those who have served in the United States Armed Forces with video tributes. Gregg Popovich gave the introductory tribute, followed by similar messages from Danny Green and Stephen Jackson. Members of the Wounded Warriors sat at courtside.

THE FACTS: Damian Lillard kept cruising to Rookie of the Year honors with 35 points, nine assists and no turnovers and the Portland Trail Blazers put a comprehensive thumping on the San Antonio Spurs 136-106 on Friday.

LaMarcus Aldridge's 26 points, 23 from J.J. Hickson and 20 more off the bench from Eric Maynor added to the 136 total, the most scored against the Spurs in the history of the AT&T Center and the most in a San Antonio home game since 1990 when the Spurs played in Hemisfair Arena. It's the worst home loss since a 33-point defeat to Toronto in the Alamodome in 1997.

Portland (29-32) shot almost 62 percent, scored 46 in the fourth quarter and hit 13-for-21 from the 3-point line (61.9 percent).

It was the first time since Tony Parker injured his ankle four games back that the Spurs appeared to have missed their star point guard. With Lillard, Maynor and Hickson attacking the rim in a fashion more resembling Parker than anything the Spurs did, the Trail Blazers earned 21 trips to the foul line -- six more than the Spurs -- and outscored San Antonio off turnovers 19-6.

The Spurs (48-15) shot 52 percent from the floor. Tim Duncan scored 18. They will limp into a key Western Conference game on Monday at home against Oklahoma City.

THE STAT: This game was tied at halftime, yet Portland blew it open by hitting 11-for-15 from 3-point territory and still managed to outscore the Spurs in second-chance opportunities 14-2 in the second half.

TURNING POINT: Trail Blazers coach Terry Stotts admitted to being nervous when the Spurs trailed by 12 with 6:15 to go. Portland's last game was still on Stotts' mind, when the Blazers led at Memphis by 12 at halftime and lost. Yet Portland hit the next five shots against the Spurs. Two were 3-pointers from Lillard (he also was fouled on a 3-point shot and made three free throws), Maynor had a 3-pointer and a layup and Aldridge followed with a layup that gave Portland a 123-99 lead with 3:22 remaining, and the subs came in.

HOT: Overshadowed in Lillard's excellent performance was Maynor's game off the bench. He played 23 minutes, hit 8-for-11 from the floor (2-for-3 from 3) and had six assists. He's 16-for-24 (4-for-6 from 3) in the last three games and perhaps can make a late run at Sixth Man of the Year honors if he keeps this up.

NOT: Manu Ginobili had his first sub-.500 shooting night for the first time in four games. He went 6-for-15, 2-for-7 from the 3-point line.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: If Lillard is Rookie of the Year, he owes some of the award to the Spurs. In three games against San Antonio this season, Lillard was 31-for-58 (53 percent) from the floor, 9-for-18 from the 3-point line, averaged seven assists and 28 points per game.

ROOKIE WATCH: More on Lillard. He missed a career high by two points. He scored 37 off 15 field goals including seven from the 3-point line in a six-point loss on Jan. 11 at Golden State.

NOTABLE: Something bad did happen to the Trail Blazers on Friday. They saw first-half leg injuries to rookies to Meyers Leonard and Victor Claver that occurred within 1 ½ minutes of each other. ... Portland keeps up the chase for a playoff spot, picking up a game on eighth-seeded Utah (losers by a point in Chicago tonight and now 1 ½ games up on the Blazers) and also 1 ½ games back of the Lakers before their game with Toronto started tonight in L.A. ... It's the most points the Spurs have allowed this season, the previous regulation high being 119 by the Pistons in Detroit.
