Grizzlies-Cavaliers Preview

While the Memphis Grizzlies continue to pile up wins, they had to fight their way back in their last game.

The Cleveland Cavaliers are coming off an impressive comeback of their own.

Looking for their first win in Cleveland in almost a decade, the Grizzlies try for a fourth consecutive victory over the Cavaliers on Friday night, and they likely won't have to deal with Kyrie Irving while they do it.

Memphis (40-19) has won 10 of 11, with its only loss coming 98-91 at Eastern Conference-leading Miami last Friday. The Grizzlies handily bounced back two nights later with a 108-82 victory at Orlando, then beat Portland 91-85 on Wednesday after trailing by 17 in the third quarter. This came a week after they erased a 25-point deficit in a 90-84 win over Dallas.

"I don't like being down 17 or 25, but being in those situations, we get a taste of it, and we find who we are," said Mike Conley, who scored 20 against the Trail Blazers.

"We're not always going out there blowing people out. We're winning close games. We're having to come back. Every night is a different night, and for us to win in different ways is good."

The Grizzlies have won three straight over the Cavaliers (21-40), but they've all been played in Memphis. They won 84-78 on Nov. 26, while Conley and Irving both sat out.

The Grizzlies have been outscored by an average of 11.7 points in losing seven straight in Cleveland since November 2003, though, only one of those defeats came since LeBron James left town.

Friday marks the first meeting between these teams since Memphis - in an effort to clear salary - sent Marreese Speights, Wayne Ellington, Josh Selby and a future first-round draft pick to Cleveland in exchange for Jon Leuer on Jan. 22.

Providing significant contributions since the trade, Speights and Ellington combined for 30 points and 13 rebounds Wednesday in a thrilling 104-101 win over Utah. Irving scored 11 of his 20 points over the last 4:21 and had 10 assists for Cleveland, which trailed by 12 with just over seven minutes to go.

"Merry Christmas to us. We got lucky. That was a gift, basically," coach Byron Scott said. "I told them after the game that we can't come out and play like that and expect to come back and win a basketball game."

That is especially true with Irving in street clothes.

Irving is doubtful for this game with an illness. He also continues to play through knee pain, and Scott said he would consider shutting him down if the problems persist. The Cavs are 4-10 without their All-Star point guard.

Speights is averaging 12.7 points and 6.3 boards with Cleveland after averaging 6.6 and 4.7 this season with Memphis. Ellington, who's started the last two games in place of the ill Dion Waiters, has recorded 11.1 points per contest over his last 13.

The Cavaliers have won four straight and seven of 10 when Ellington scores at least 10.

"He's solid," Scott said. "That's the thing about Wayne. I trust him when he's out there because I know he's going to do all the right things. ... He plays within himself and he competes. He's not afraid of the moment."

Waiters, averaging 19.9 points on 52.5 percent shooting over a seven-game stretch, is questionable to suit up Friday.

Zach Randolph, Memphis' leader with 15.7 points and 11.6 rebounds, seems unlikely to play after missing the last two games with an ankle injury.

Marc Gasol is averaging 20.0 points over the last four games for the Grizzlies.

Gasol leads Grizzlies past Cavaliers 103-92

CLEVELAND (AP) The Memphis Grizzlies are doing just fine with their best player sidelined by an injury.

Friday night's 103-92 win over Cleveland was the Grizzlies' third straight victory without leading scorer Zach Randolph, who is out with a sprained left ankle.

Marc Gasol scored 22 points and the Grizzlies held off a late run to win for the 11th time in 12 games.

The past three games, which also include victories over Orlando and Portland, have been particularly impressive since Randolph, who averages 15.7 points and 11.6 rebounds, has been unavailable.

"We've got a lot of options, even without Zach," Gasol said. "Everyone is playing well."

Memphis strengthened its hold on the fourth spot in the Western Conference playoff race and is 12-4 since trading star forward Rudy Gay to Toronto on Jan. 30.

The Grizzlies' previous victory in Cleveland came on Nov. 29, 2003, LeBron James' rookie season with the Cavaliers. Mike Conley, who helped Ohio State reach the Final Four in 2007, added 17 points for the Grizzlies and was happy to get his first pro win in Ohio.

"It's very special to finally win here because it's always tough to play in this building," he said. "For us to win and me to play this well in front of so many fans who watched me play in college, it's really great."

Kyrie Irving, who missed Cleveland's morning shootaround with flu-like symptoms, scored a team-high 24 points, but the Cavaliers were outscored 32-18 in the third quarter after leading 51-48 at halftime.

"That third quarter just killed us," he said. "If we could avoid third quarter holes like that we could get a lot more wins."

Asked why the Cavaliers have struggled in the third quarter, coach Byron Scott said. "I have no idea, but we have to figure out a way to regain that focus when we come back out. For some reason we're somewhere else when we come out (after halftime)."

Jerryd Bayless scored 17 points and Grizzlies pulled away after the Cavaliers cut the lead to 88-84 with 5:21 to play. Conley also had 11 assists while Bayless scored 11 points in the fourth quarter.

Gasol and Ed Davis combined for 18 points in the third quarter to help the Grizzlies build a double-figure lead. Gasol scored 10 in the period while Davis, starting for Randolph, added eight. Memphis took a 72-61 lead with 4:22 remaining and still led 80-69 after three quarters.

"We started attacking the basket better," Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins said. "In the second half, we got inside and we got to the basket. It was pretty simple."

Irving re-entered the game with 6:31 remaining in the fourth quarter and scored a minute later on a left-handed drive to the basket, cutting the lead to 88-84. Bayless hit a 3-pointer while Conley scored on a drive and added a jumper to push the lead to 95-86.

Irving, the Cavaliers' All-Star point guard, was listed as doubtful Friday morning. He said he began filling ill Thursday night, but felt better after going to the doctor and resting most of Friday.

Irving arrived at the arena about 90 minutes before game time and said he was going to play. He was 11 of 21 from the field and had three assists in 36 minutes.

Irving was recently held out of three games to rest a hyperextended right knee. He said following Wednesday's win over Utah that the injury was still bothering him.

Scott said Thursday he would consider shutting down Irving again, rather than risk him making it worse. Irving said before Friday's game his knee was fine and he wasn't getting shut down.

Dion Waiters, who usually starts in the backcourt with Irving, returned after missing two games with the flu that has been affecting the Cavaliers' players and coaches. Waiters scored three points and missed all four shots in 21 minutes.

Cavaliers forward Alonzo Gee ended the first quarter by hitting a 65-foot shot at the buzzer. Gee scored 12 points while C.J. Miles had 13.

Cleveland's Marreese Speights sustained a laceration to his right elbow late in the game.

Notes: Former Portland C Greg Oden, who hasn't played in the NBA since 2009, attended the game. The Cavaliers are one of several teams exploring the possibility of signing the No. 1 overall pick in 2007 whose NBA career has been cut short by injuries. Oden has undergone three microfracture knee surgeries - two on his left knee. It appears unlikely he will sign with a team until the summer. Oden and Conley were teammates at Ohio State. ... Hollins said there's no timetable for the return of Randolph, the league's third-leading rebounder, averaging 11.6. Randolph hasn't played since March 3 against Orlando. ... F Darrell Arthur missed his second straight game with neck and back soreness. He isn't traveling with the team. ... Cavaliers G Daniel Gibson was available to play after missing Wednesday's game with flu, but saw no action.

THE FACTS: Center Marc Gasol collected 22 points and eight rebounds, and point guard Mike Conley had 17 points and a game-high 11 assists as the Memphis Grizzlies pulled away for a 103-92 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Point guard Jerryd Bayless added 17 points off the bench for the Grizzlies, who won for the 11th time in their last 12 games. Cleveland point guard Kyrie Irving led all scorers with 24 points, while power forward Tristan Thompson had 10 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Memphis, which played without injured All-Star power forward Zach Randolph, outscored the Cavaliers 55-41 in the second half.

THE STAT: The Grizzlies snapped a seven-game losing streak at Quicken Loans Arena and improved to 3-13 all-time in Cleveland. Former Ohio State standout Conley -- a sixth-year pro -- savored his initial NBA victory in the state. "It's very special to finally win here because it's always tough to play in this building," he said. TURNING POINT: The Grizzlies outscored the Cavaliers 32-18 in the third quarter, taking the lead for good at 52-51 on a Conley layup. Gasol (10 points, two blocks), Conley (eight points, six assists), and power forward Ed Davis (eight points, six rebounds) combined for 26 points, eight boards and seven assists in the period, completely dominating their Cleveland counterparts. GOOD MOVE: Free agent center Greg Oden was in attendance to support former high school and college teammate Conley, but was given a seat directly adjacent to the Cavaliers' bench -- seats that are normally used by Cleveland owner Dan Gilbert. It was a savvy gesture by the Cavaliers, who are one of the frontrunners to sign the former No. 1 overall draft pick this summer. Oden lives in Columbus.

BAD MOVE: Speights relished the opportunity to play against the Grizzlies, who dealt him to Cleveland on Jan. 22, but was completely out of sync. He had nine points, one board, and four fouls while being pushed around the paint by Gasol. "I know he was looking forward to going against Memphis because today was the earliest he's shown up for practice all year," Cavaliers coach Byron Scott quipped.

NOTABLE: Randolph (left ankle sprain) missed his third game in a row for the Grizzlies, while power forward Darrell Arthur (back, neck soreness) sat out his second straight contest. ... Longtime Pistons small forward Prince received a fairly loud chorus of boos when he was introduced with Memphis' starting lineup. Detroit has been Cleveland's top rival since the 2006 NBA playoffs. ... The Cavaliers listed Irving as "doubtful" earlier in the day with the flu, but he declared himself ready to play when he arrived at the arena. "I went to the doctor and got checked out, so everything is OK," Irving said. "This is what 13 hours of sleep will do for you."
