Mavericks-Pistons Preview

A three-game losing streak last week damaged the Dallas Mavericks' hopes of making the playoffs, but two wins in three contests since have shown that they are hardly giving up.

The Mavericks should have a good chance to continue their improved play as they open a crucial four-game road trip Friday night against the sinking Detroit Pistons, whom they've dominated recently.

Dallas (27-33) rebounded from a 33-point loss to Houston on Sunday by beating the Rockets 112-108 on Wednesday. O.J. Mayo had two big fourth-quarter baskets and a career-high 12 assists, and Shawn Marion and Dirk Nowitzki each scored 22 for the Mavs.

"We weathered everything tonight, and it is a sign of character," coach Rick Carlisle said.

Dallas is 11th in the Western Conference, 4 1-2 games out of the final playoff spot after holding on against one of the highest-scoring teams in the league. Houston star James Harden scored 28 points but was limited to 5 of 17 from the field.

The Mavs now open their trip versus the Pistons before facing Minnesota and Milwaukee and closing it out against West-leading San Antonio.

"Every game to us is really big," Nowitzki said. "We've got a lot of road games coming up and we've been losing some close road games, so we're going to ... get focused on Detroit and hopefully start the trip off on the right foot."

Dallas, which has alternated wins and losses in its last six away games, has seen five of its last seven road defeats come by six or fewer points.

The Mavericks appear to have a good chance to get the trip off to a good start, having won the last two overall meetings with Detroit by a combined 29 points. Dallas has won seven of eight in the series and three of four at the Palace.

The Mavs took the first meeting this season 92-77 on Dec. 1 behind 27 points from Mayo. Dallas limited the Pistons to 34.1 percent shooting overall and outscored them 50-29 in the second half.

Detroit (23-40) may not be primed to put up much more of a fight this time, having dropped six of seven overall and four in a row at home. The Pistons lost 114-75 at San Antonio on Sunday and 87-77 at home to a New York team missing Carmelo Anthony on Wednesday.

The game was tied after three quarters, but the Knicks went on a 16-0 run in the fourth to take control. Detroit played without top big men Andre Drummond and Greg Monroe, and coach Lawrence Frank missed the game due to a personal matter.

"It just happens throughout the season, when guys go out with injuries," guard Brandon Knight said. "It made it a little bit tougher as far as trying to find a flow for our team, but I think we did a good job just playing the game and figuring it out."

Monroe, who averages team highs of 16.1 points and 9.5 rebounds, is uncertain for this game. He's nursing a sprained left ankle suffered in practice Tuesday.

Mavericks blow lead but beat Pistons 102-99

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) Dirk Nowitzki made two big shots down the stretch to lift Dallas to an important win.

Afterward, he was still shaking his head.

"This is one we'll take, but got to be better," he said. "We got lucky."

The Mavericks blew a 15-point lead in the fourth quarter but recovered to beat the Detroit Pistons 102-99 on Friday night. Charlie Villanueva missed a 3-pointer in the final seconds that would have tied it, and Dallas pulled within 3 1/2 games of eighth-place Utah in the race for the last playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Detroit took a 97-96 lead on a 3-pointer by Khris Middleton, but Nowitzki answered with an 18-footer from the right side and a 15-footer from the left, putting Dallas ahead by three.

It was 100-99 after Villanueva caught teammate Jose Calderon's airball and made a layup with 6 seconds left. Darren Collison hit two free throws for the Mavericks, and Villanueva missed from the left corner.

"We did not do a good job in the fourth, but we held them off and got the win and that is a positive," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said. "We made a couple mistakes on that last play. We blew the coverage, but we got lucky."

It was the opener of a four-game road trip for the Mavericks that might represent their last chance to start making up ground and extend their streak of playoff appearances to 13 seasons. O.J. Mayo scored 22 points, going 5 of 8 from 3-point range. Teammate Mike James was 4 of 6. Dallas shot 11 of 21 from beyond the arc.

Brandon Knight scored 21 points for the Pistons. Detroit coach Lawrence Frank missed his second straight game because of a personal matter, and assistant Brian Hill filled in.

"The only thing I can say is after being very disappointed with our effort in the first half defensively and the game-plan mistakes we had, I thought our guys took the challenge in the second half and gave us a much better effort defensively," Hill said. "We got a couple good looks at the end. They didn't fall."

Down 88-73 in the fourth, Detroit started its rally by scoring six straight points. The Pistons were still down 95-88 when Middleton and Villanueva made consecutive 3-pointers to set up a tense finish.

Brandan Wright scored 14 points for the Mavericks, and Nowitzki and James added 12 each.

Greg Monroe had 14 points and 10 rebounds for Detroit. Middleton, a rookie who was taken in the second round of last year's draft, scored a season-high 14 points. He'd scored 37 all season prior to the game.

"Everyone wants to play in the fourth quarter, because that's money time," Middleton said. "I have confidence in my shot, and so do my teammates, so I was going to take it when I got an open look. That's my job."

Dallas led 76-71 after three quarters, then started the fourth on a 12-2 run capped by two 3-pointers by Vince Carter. Knight then missed a layup while alone on a fast break, and it looked as though the Mavericks would have little trouble closing out the game.

It turned out Detroit had one more run left, but the Pistons still lost for the seventh time in eight games.

"They are a resilient team," Carlisle said. "They have young guys that have turned into fighters. Lawrence and Brian Hill have done a great job with them and they are going to get better and better."

NOTES: Dallas now plays at Minnesota, Milwaukee and San Antonio. The Mavericks are in the middle of a stretch in which they play seven of eight on the road. ... Detroit's Kyle Singler went crashing into the scorer's table after being fouled near midcourt in the final seconds of the third quarter. He made two of three free throws to cut the deficit to five.

THE FACTS: O.J. Mayo had 22 points as the Dallas Mavericks escaped with a 102-99 victory over the Detroit Pistons at The Palace on Friday. The Mavericks gave away a 15-point, fourth-quarter lead. Brandan Wright scored 14 points and Dirk Nowitzki chipped in 12, including two crucial late baskets. Brandon Knight's 21 points topped the Pistons, who have lost four straight and seven of their last eight. Greg Monroe, who missed Detroit's game against New York on Wednesday with a left ankle sprain, added 14 points and 10 rebounds but Charlie Villanueva missed a potential tying 3-pointer on the last possession.

QUOTABLE: "That (15-point) lead kept us afloat, especially when we started missing shots and they started hitting big shots. We've just got to learn from our mistakes. We've got to learn when we get a big lead like that, how to continue to keep moving forward instead of getting comfortable, thinking that we're fine and there's still eight or nine minutes left in the game."

THE STAT: 5. Detroit was a powerhouse in the last decade, winning an NBA title and reaching the Eastern Conference Finals six straight seasons. Those days are long gone. With its latest loss, the 41st of the season, the Pistons are assured of their fifth straight non-winning season. That hasn't happened since they had six straight losing seasons from 1977-78 through 1982-83.

TURNING POINT: Nowitzki was uncharacteristically quiet through three quarters, attempting just seven shots. He finally emerged from the shadows after the Pistons rallied to take a 97-96 lead. He made an 18-footer and a 15-footer on back-to-back possessions and that was just enough to allow the Mavericks to survive.

QUOTABLE II: "We want to execute on both ends. We left a very good shooter open who was starting to feel his groove. I don't care how many minutes he played, he hit one or two and got into a groove. I just want us to focus on closing the game."

HOT: Mayo had a career-high 12 assists in a victory over Houston on Wednesday but his shooting stood out on Friday. He made five of nine 3-point attempts, as Dallas went 11-for-22 from long range. He also helped out on the boards with five rebounds and added three assists.

NOT: Rodney Stuckey, who has played more minutes than any other Detroit reserve, was averaging 2.8 points over his last four games. He managed to go below that figure, scoring just one points in 13 minutes. Stuckey was passive, attempting just one shot. He has had trouble adjusting to being off the ball on most offensive possessions.

ROOKIE WATCH: Reserve forward Khris Middleton, one of two second-round picks by Detroit last year, had a career-high 14 points and five rebounds. Middleton made two 3-pointers during his team's fourth-quarter outburst. Starter Kyle Singler shot 3 for 11 and scored nine points but had three steals. The Mavericks' Jae Crowder scored two points in a starting role.

NOTABLE: Mavericks forward Shawn Marion was a late scratch because of a left calf injury. Coach Rick Carlisle used his 20th different lineup this season. ... Pistons coach Lawrence Frank missed his second game to be with his ailing wife Susan in New Jersey. Brian Hill filled in for him. ... The Mavericks have won 10 of the last 12 meetings. ... The Pistons kick off a four-game West Coast swing against the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday. Detroit plays 12 of its remaining 18 games on the road. ... Dallas made at least nine 3-pointers in the last four games. ... The Mavericks had seven players in double figures while shooting 52.6 percent.
