The Indiana Pacers have surged into second place in the Eastern Conference and have an excellent chance to win their first Central Division title in nine years.

Anything beyond that may involve getting past the Boston Celtics.

In a possible playoff preview, Indiana seeks an eighth victory in nine tries Wednesday night by preventing visiting Boston from extending its winning streak to four games.

Indiana (38-22) continued its recent solid play by defeating Chicago 97-92 on Sunday and leads third-place New York by one-half game in the East. The victory also pushed its Central lead over the Bulls to four games.

David West scored a season-high 31 points and George Hill added 21 for the Pacers, who haven't won a division title since 2003-04.

West is averaging 24.0 points over his last four games.

"(West) leads our team in will," coach Frank Vogel said. "He has a great will to do whatever is necessary to get the job done and to get a `W."'

The Pacers, winners in 21 of 24 at home, rank second in the league in defense allowing 89.6 points per game.

"Throughout the year, as our defense has continued to grow, we know that we have confidence to make plays in games and to get stops to win," West said.

Indiana's offense, though, let it down in the first meeting with Boston as it shot a season-low 31.8 percent in a 94-75 loss Jan. 4. West and Paul George, who scored 10 points and shot 4 of 14 from the field Sunday, each hit only 4 of 18 shots.

The Pacers know they'll be in for another tough challenge despite not having to face Rajon Rondo, who is out for the season with a torn ACL.

"They have one of the best coaches in the game," Vogel told the team's official website. "They win no matter who's in uniform. That's what kind of team Boston is and that's a credit to Doc Rivers."

Avery Bradley has stepped into a starting role since Rondo's injury, and he scored a season-high 22 points in Tuesday's 109-101 victory at Philadelphia as the Celtics (32-27) won their third straight.

"My teammates have confidence in me and I have confidence in myself," said Bradley, who hit 10 of 15 from the field. "When I have an open shot, I have to take it. That's how we play on this team. It helps us when I do that."

Vogel said Boston has been just as dangerous with Bradley running the point.

"They're actually running a lot more than they typically do," Vogel said. "They're going to bring more defensive ball pressure when you have Avery Bradley in there at the point guard spot and more of an up-tempo style."

Boston is in seventh place in the East but is only 1 1/2 games behind Chicago for fourth after Paul Pierce finished with 18 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists Tuesday.

Jeff Green scored 16 points off the bench and fellow reserve Jordan Crawford added 12 for the Celtics, who finished 11 of 19 from 3-point range.

"That's the new us in a lot of ways, the ball finds the open guy," Rivers said. "It's simple, but it's hard to do unless you buy in. Everyone has bought in."

Boston has won three straight and eight of the last 11 meetings with Indiana.

Green's layup completes rally, Celtics beat Pacers

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The Indiana Pacers lost the lead, then lost sight of Jeff Green.

Kevin Garnett found Green all alone under the basket for a layup with 0.5 seconds remaining to finish off a comeback from 14 points down in the third quarter, and the Boston Celtics beat the Pacers 83-81 on Wednesday night.

"Happy it went in," Green said. "Great pass by Garnett. Great execution by us. Good draw up by Doc (Rivers).

"We have found ways to win. The trust is there now. Guys are giving what Doc wants. We are finding a way."

Garnett led the Celtics with 18 points and 10 rebounds and dragged Boston back after they trailed most of the final three quarters. Green had 11 points off the bench.

Paul George scored 16 points for the Pacers, who had all five starters in double figures. David West added 11 points and 16 rebounds, and George Hill finished with 14 points.

Center Roy Hibbert had his 14th double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Lance Stephenson returned to the starting lineup with Danny Granger back down with a sore knee and chipped in 12 points. West's double-double was also his 14th of the season.

The Celtics' final two baskets both came off busted defensive assignments. Avery Bradley was left all alone under the basket to tie the game at 81 off an assist from Garnett. The same happened on Green's layup.

"We just didn't talk and didn't communicate," George said about the final play.

Jason Terry scored eight of his 10 points in the fourth quarter.

"We got stops, we got easy transition points," Green said. "Guys made some tough shots. Paul made a couple threes. Jet made a 3. Garnett down low.

"Other guys are stepping up."

The Pacers (38-23) were 4 for 20 in the fourth quarter and didn't score a single point in the last 4:35 of the game after George had followed two 3-pointers by Hill and a fast-break dunk with a 3 of his own to put the Pacers up 81-72.

"I just didn't think we had a good rhythm all night," West said. "We thought we did a good job defensively, having them under control. We just weren't able to respond on the offensive end with plays.

"As a group we just didn't have that rhythm. We were careless with the ball and we just didn't make some plays we were supposed to make."

The first quarter was the Garnett against Hibbert show. Garnett knocked down three consecutive jumpers, including his first 3-pointer of the season, to score the first seven Boston points. The Celtics couldn't match Hibbert's size and allowed him to score 12 points and grab seven rebounds in the first quarter. He had his 14th double-double of the season by halftime, but was a non-factor down the stretch.

Outside of Garnett, the Celtics (33-27) struggled from the field and shot just 34.8 percent in the opening 12 minutes. Meanwhile, the Pacers got out in transition for easy buckets, including West's baseline jumper and George's layup to finish on a 9-2 run for a 27-19 lead.

The second quarter was much more physical and rugged until the Pacers finished the half with another spurt. George had two breakaway dunks, including one off a full-court football pass from Hill, but a defensive breakdown allowed Paul Pierce to finish a buzzer-beating layup to cut the Pacers' lead to 49-42 at halftime.

Stephenson brought the third-quarter energy during a 12-5 run that gave Indiana its biggest lead of the game at 63-49. He pushed the ball for a layup off a steal, got another lay-in off dribble-drive penetration and threw down a one-hand dunk off a baseline feed from West.

The Celtics came out of a timeout with a 6-0 run capped by Pierce's layup. Ian Mahinmi's fadeaway jumper off an offensive rebound gave the Pacers a 68-58 lead heading into the final quarter.

"We were flat tonight and they got into us," Rivers said. "Indiana was great and pushed us around the floor in the first half. I thought we responded well in the second half; we just hang around.

"That's what we've been doing all year, just hanging around and we stole the game."

Boston tied a season high with its third consecutive road win. Garnett was 7 for 10 from the field while the rest of Celtics went 27 for 73 (37.0 percent).

Notes: Vogel said Granger's knee hasn't caused him pain while playing, but has been sore afterward and the team doesn't want to push it. He could have played if it was a playoff game. "We're looking at it as being precautionary, understanding it's still a long season, there's still a lot of time left," Vogel said before the game. "We want him to get back to 100 percent and this is the best way to do it. (He) did not push through when there's above average soreness. We're looking at it as it's hopefully going to be a short-term thing."

THE FACTS: Left for dead two months ago, the Boston Celtics have come fully to life. Jeff Green's lay-in on a high-low feed from Kevin Garnett with five-tenths of a second remaining completed an 11-0 run in the final 4:15 that rallied the Celtics to an 83-81 victory over the stunned Indiana Pacers Wednesday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Indiana led 81-72 with 4:36 remaining but shot 0-for-7 with four turnovers the rest of the way. Garnett scored 18 to lead the Celtics (33-27), who won their fourth in a row and improved to 13-4 since Rajon Rondo was lost for the season with a knee injury. Paul Pierce and Avery Bradley had 13 apiece. Paul George scored 16 and George Hill had14 to lead Indiana (38-23), which shot 4-for-20 in the fourth quarter.

THE STAT: In winning their last four games against the Pacers, the Celtics have limited Indiana to averages of 78.8 points, .346 shooting overall and .188 from the 3-point line.

TURNING POINT: Indiana took a 10-point lead, 68-58, into the fourth quarter but missed its first nine shots as the Celtics put together an 11-2 run to cut it to 70-69. Hill scored eight straight points and George added a 3-pointer as Indiana pushed its lead back to nine points and it appeared Indiana was back in charge. But the Celtics chipped away, cutting it to 81-79 on a Pierce 3-pointer with 2:33 left and tying it on Bradley's layup with 1:21 remaining. The Pacers had two chances to re-take the lead but came up empty on both possessions, with Roy Hibbert missing an unwanted jumper late in the shot flock with 23.2 seconds remaining. Playing for the last shot, the Celtics ran a give-and-go with Green feeding Garnett in the key, then curling off a Pierce back-screen to spring open under the bucket. Indiana was unable to get a shot off on its final possession as Pierce fronted George, preventing him from getting off the ground after the lob toward the rim.

HOT: Garnett shot 7-for-10 including his first 3-pointer of the season (in 12 attempts), adding 10 rebounds, two blocks and two assists. He was the only starter on either team to make at least half his attempts.

NOT: Of the 10 Pacers that played, nine failed to make have their shots. The starters combined to go 27-for-71 (.380), including 5-for-19 (.263) from the arc and the bench was even worse, combining for 5-for-17 (.294) overall and 1-for-8 (.125) from long range.

QUOTABLE III: "We just didn't take care of the ball. We really should have pounded them on the inside. They forced us to shoot a lot of jump shots in the closing minutes. At that point, we just got real stagnant, offensively."

NOTABLE: Indiana played without Danny Granger, whose comeback from a left knee injury has been temporarily cut short due to lingering pain. Though MRI results were negative, Granger will sit for a week before being re-evaluated. ... Boston enjoyed a 29-16 advantage in bench scoring with Green (11) and Jason Terry (10) reaching double figures. ... Indiana scored 42 points in the paint in the first three periods but was outscored 14-2 in the fourth. ... Pacers center Roy Hibbert scored 12 in the first quarter, none thereafter, attempting just four more shots, but did finish with 12 rebounds for a double-double. ... West had a double-double with 11 points and 16 rebounds. ... Indiana fell to 3-8 in games decided by three points or less.
