Even with a key piece of their frontcourt out due to injury, the New Orleans Hornets remained competitive at home in their latest victory.

The Hornets hope to continue that trend against an Orlando Magic team that has struggled to find wins regardless of venue.

New Orleans will try to keep pushing forward without rookie Anthony Davis on Monday night when they seek their sixth straight win over the plummeting Magic.

While the Hornets (21-39) won for only the second time in seven games overall with a 100-95 win over Detroit on Friday, they've been playing much tougher in New Orleans recently. They're 8-5 at home since Jan. 7, and three of those losses have been by only four points.

Greivis Vasquez made certain the Hornets did not come up short again on Friday. He capped a 25-point, nine-assist performance by hitting a floater with 12 seconds left to help the team snap a two-game skid.

"In my head I've got all the games that we couldn't close and we lost," Vasquez said. "That was one thing I got in my mind at the end when I took the last shot."

Vasquez also played a big role with a season-high 27 points, eight assists and six rebounds in a 97-94 victory at Orlando on Dec. 26. Robin Lopez led the way with 29 on a combined 20 for 22 shooting from the field and free throw line.

Davis - the first overall pick in the draft - added 12 points and 11 rebounds in that meeting, but will miss his third straight game because of a left shoulder sprain.

The Hornets have also lost Jason Smith for the rest of the season with a torn labrum in his right shoulder. The reserve center was averaging 8.2 points and 3.6 boards off the bench.

After getting outrebounded 48-25 in a season-worst 119-74 loss at Oklahoma City on Wednesday without the two big men, New Orleans had a 47-40 edge over the Pistons as Al-Farouq Aminu and Ryan Anderson combined for 27.

"We need to really get to the boards a little bit more, so that's something I came out and knew I needed to do," said Anderson, who had 19 points and 13 rebounds.

Now the Hornets look to match that effort against the Magic, who own a minus-4.0 rebounding margin in their last eight games. Orlando (16-44), which has lost 31 of 35 overall, has also given up an average of 117.0 points during its three-game losing streak.

Arron Afflalo and E'Twaun Moore each had 12 points in a 108-82 loss to Memphis on Sunday, while trade-deadline acquisition Tobias Harris finished with just six on 3-of-14 shooting. Harris had averaged 20.0 points on 69.6 percent shooting in his first four games with Orlando.

"I thought they might have been keying in a little bit," he said. "But as a player that when you have to adapt to what the other team is doing."

Jameer Nelson, meanwhile, is a game-time decision after missing his sixth straight on Sunday with a bruised knee. Nelson had 28 points and 10 assists in the first meeting with the Hornets, but has totaled four points on 2-of-13 shooting in his last two in New Orleans.

The Magic seek their second straight road win after dropping 14 of their previous 15 by an average of 11.2 points. They've lost four straight in New Orleans since a 95-88 victory on Nov. 19, 2007.

Afflalo leads Magic past Hornets 105-102

NEW ORLEANS (AP) Arron Afflalo bolted through a crowd of Hornets defenders as he angled toward the hoop, switching the ball from his left hand to his right to hit a layup Orlando needed to keep another game from slipping away.

Minutes later, he sank an 11-foot turnaround fade in the lane with Eric Gordon's hand in his face - yet another clutch play that led the Magic to an unlikely comeback on the road.

Afflalo finished with a game-high 26 points, scoring five in the final 38 seconds, and Orlando snapped a three-game skid by erasing a 17-point, second-half deficit en route to a 105-102 victory over New Orleans on Monday night.

"It was great to see the guys feel it and get rewarded for their effort," Magic coach Jacques Vaughn said. "We get down 17 and still plug away and play each possession."

Jameer Nelson, returning from a left knee injury that sidelined him six games, scored 15 points and Tobias Harris also scored 15 for Orlando, which erased a nine-point deficit during the final 3:15.

Afflalo scored 11 of his points in the fourth quarter. His late turnaround over Gordon gave Orlando the lead for good at 101-100 with 38 seconds left.

Afflalo hit two free throws soon after to make it 103-100, but found himself back on the free-throw line in a one-point game with 12 seconds left after Anthony Davis' tip-in made it 103-102.

Afflalo missed his second free throw, but Harris got the offensive rebound and hit one of two free throws to make it a three-point game with 10.6 seconds left.

"I'm glad Tobias got that last rebound, because I think my swag was a little too high," Afflalo said. "Great, great play by him. It's not about me making free throws. It's just about coming through. ... From the tip today we struggled at some moments, but we continued to fight together."

The Hornets then struggled to set up a clean final shot, and Greivis Vasquez's off-balance 3 in the final seconds missed badly - his third miss in the last 23 seconds - sealing New Orleans' collapse.

"It was terrible. There's no other way to slice it," Hornets coach Monty Williams said. "We gave up 69 points in (the second) half against a team that played last night and had a two-hour flight. That, to me, is not something we should be proud of at all. Even if we had won that game I would still be upset about our defensive effort."

Davis, returning from a left shoulder sprain that sidelined him two games, had 17 points, 15 rebounds and four blocked shots, but lamented New Orleans' lackluster second-half defense.

"We can't allow ourselves to fall back like that, especially when we had the game in our hands, momentum going our way," Davis said. "They just went on a run. We missed assignments, gave up corner 3's and free-throw rebounds."

Vasquez and Gordon each added 17 points, but the normally explosive Gordon scored only five points in the second half and none in the fourth quarter.

Ryan Anderson, who played for Orlando last season, scored 13 points, and his 3-pointer gave New Orleans a 97-88 lead with 3:30 left and had the crowd on its feet.

Orlando called timeout, and when the game resumed, Afflalo made his tough change-of-hands layup, sparking an 11-1 run which Al Harrington capped with a 3 that put the Magic briefly in front 99-98.

Maurice Harkless, who had 13 points, had a follow-up dunk during the surge. Harrington finished with 10 points.

New Orleans led for most of the game, which included dramatic shifts in momentum.

After trailing the entire first quarter and much of the second, Orlando took its first and only lead of the first three quarters with a 9-0 run that featured Afflalo's mid-range jumper and 3 as Orlando went up 36-31.

New Orleans then closed the half on a 15-0 run in which Vasquez scored six on three-point play and 3-pointer to make it 46-36 at halftime.

The Hornets extended the run to 19-0 in the second half and later took their biggest lead when back-to-back 3s by Anderson and Gordon made it 61-44.

At that point, it looked as if the Hornets would run away with a home-court rout, but Orlando was far from finished.

Nelson, who had missed all four of his shots in the first half, hit a 3 from the left corner, sparking a 22-5 run in which he scored 11 points himself. Nelson added a three-point play on a driving layup as he was fouled and hit another 3 during the spurt, and Afflalo's short turnaround in the lane tied the game at 66 with 2:28 still left in the third quarter.

Nelson said his knee gave him no problems, adding he felt "quicker than a hiccup."

"I just felt good," Nelson said. "This means a lot, being down by as many points as we were and going on to win."

Notes: The Hornets entered the game 5-0 on Mondays this season. ... Vasquez, who had eight assists, has had the Hornets' team-high (either tied or alone) in assists in each of the club's 61 games this season. ... Harris, who averaged 4.9 points in 28 games in Milwaukee earlier this season, is now averaging 16.8 points in his first six games with Orlando since being traded as part of a six-player deal Feb. 21.

THE FACTS: The Orlando Magic outscored the New Orleans Hornets by nine points in the final 2 ½ minutes Monday night and held on to win 105-102. The win halted a three-game losing streak and gave the Magic (17-44) only their third win the past 23 games.

Arron Afflalo scored 17 second-half points to finish with 26 for the game, and Jameer Nelson added 15 points, all in the final 24 minutes. The pair paced the Magic, who found themselves down by 17 early the third quarter to the Hornets (21-40).

Down 98-92 with 2:29 to play after New Orleans' Anthony Davis hit the second of two free throws, Orlando began its comeback with two Afflalo free throws. Maurice Harkless slammed a rebound and Al Harrington drilled a 3-pointer in the corner in front of the Hornets' bench and suddenly the Magic were up 99-98. Greivis Vasquez rattled in a driving layup to give New Orleans a 100-99 lead with just 1:06 to go. Afflalo hit an 11-foot turnaround jumper and three straight free throws to give Orlando the lead for good.

The Hornets had their chances, but 12 turnovers that Orlando turned into 18 points didn't help. And without Jason Smith in the lineup with a torn labrum in his right shoulder, the Hornets couldn't keep the Magic out of the paint, where they were outscored by 14 points. Davis, in his first game back after missing two with a sprained left shoulder, gave the Hornets a boost with 17 points and 15 rebounds, while former Magic forward Ryan Anderson pitched in 13 points off the bench.

QUOTABLE: "Defensively, we were about as poor as I've seen us all year long in the second half. That was one of the worst defensive efforts I've seen as far as executing, and we just messed with the game."

THE STAT: 62.2 -- That's Orlando's shooting percentage in the second half in the final game of a back-to-back in which the second contest was on the road. The Magic had played in Orlando one night earlier, losing to Houston in a game in which they shot just 39.7 percent and lost by 26 points.

TURNING POINT: The Magic were ahead 103-102 when Afflalo was fouled following a Davis put-back for New Orleans. But, after making the front-end of a 1-and-1, he missed the second. That's when Tobias Harris raced in for the rebound. He made 1 of his 2 free throws, but the extra point forced the Hornets into heaving up a desperation 3-pointer with 1 second to play.

HOT: The Magic's Nelson was held in check during the first 24 minutes. But his 13 points on 5-for-8 shooting in the third quarter helped Orlando come back 17-point deficit to tie the game at 66. Nelson finished the game 6-for-15 and had seven assists.

NOT: Once again, New Orleans' Eric Gordon went quietly into the night after halftime. He led the Hornets with 12 points on 5-for-8 shooting in the first half. But in the final two quarters, he was just 2-for-6 for five points in 14 minutes.

NOTABLE: The Hornets entered the game 5-0 on Monday nights and 16-39 on every other day of the week. That streak ended against Orlando. ... The 69 points the Magic scored in the second half were a season high for a New Orleans opponent in either half this season. ... New Orleans tied its season high with 10 blocked shots. ... The win was only Orlando's fifth win in the calendar year 2013.
