Pistons-Spurs Preview

While the NBA-best San Antonio Spurs have succeeded despite injuries to some key players, trying to maintain that success without their star point guard could present their toughest challenge of the season.

The Spurs begin a lengthy stretch without five-time All-Star Tony Parker as they continue a six-game homestand looking to avenge last month's loss to the Detroit Pistons on Sunday night.

After its run of 18 consecutive home victories ended with a 105-101 overtime loss to lowly Phoenix on Wednesday, San Antonio (46-14) bounced back Friday to shoot a season-high 60.7 percent in a 130-102 rout of Sacramento. The victory, however, seemed bittersweet after Parker left in the third quarter with a sprained left ankle.

The team announced Saturday that an MRI showed a Grade 2 sprain that will keep Parker sidelined "approximately four weeks."

"He's been a stalwart for us. He's having an All-Star season," coach Gregg Popovich said. "As I've said, he's playing better than any other point guard in the league consistently through the year. We will miss him."

Parker's team-leading averages of 21.0 points and 7.6 assists are slightly off his career highs, and he's been particularly effective scoring the ball lately even with nagging arm and knee soreness. He has scored 25.4 per game over his last nine despite leaving Wednesday's game early with 13 points.

San Antonio is 3-1 without Parker, with the only loss coming to reigning champ Miami.

This injury may be the most prominent on a long list the Spurs have had to overcome.

Tim Duncan recently missed eight games with a sore knee, Manu Ginobili has sat out 13 with various ailments and starting swingman Kawhi Leonard missed 18 early in the season with knee tendinitis. Veteran Stephen Jackson sat 14 with a broken finger and is currently dealing with a sore ankle, and Boris Diaw could sit out a second straight contest with a strained back.

Through it all, the deep Spurs have shot a Western Conference-best 48.7 percent while taking a three-game lead over Oklahoma City. They have won 18 of 21 and are 23-3 at home.

"We've played with all different kinds of people throughout this year," said Duncan, who has three double-doubles in four games. "We're going to rally. Pop is going to change some lineups.

"We're obviously not going to replace (Parker). But we're going to have to change the way we play for a little while."

Though Parker's absence could mean more time for guards Nando De Colo, Patrick Mills and Cory Joseph, Ginobili might be the team's best option to assume the role of chief playmaker. He recorded a career-best 15 of San Antonio's season-high 41 assists Friday.

"We'll have to play better," said Ginobili, second on the team with 4.6 assists per game. "We're going to have to move the ball really well, because what (Parker) creates off the dribble, nobody will be able do it."

The Spurs flaunted their depth Friday with eight players scoring in double figures, led by DeJuan Blair's 16.

San Antonio hopes to maintain that balance versus Detroit (23-38), which snapped the Spurs' season-high 11-game winning streak with a 119-109 home victory Feb. 8. Parker scored 31 while the Spurs played without Duncan and Ginobili. Greg Monroe had 26 points and 16 rebounds, Brandon Knight scored 24 and Charlie Villanueva 21 for the Pistons, who shot 51.7 percent while matching their highest point total of the season.

Detroit enters the rematch having lost four of five after a 100-95 defeat at New Orleans on Friday.

Monroe had 27 points and 10 rebounds, two days after finishing with 26 and 11 in a win at Washington. Knight totaled 54 points in those two games after missing three with a knee injury.

Spurs rout Pistons 114-75 without injured Parker

SAN ANTONIO (AP) Tim Duncan insists the San Antonio Spurs are still trying to find their way on offense without All-Star point guard Tony Parker.

They sure looked smooth Sunday night.

San Antonio had one of its most efficient games this season, routing the Detroit Pistons 114-75 in its first game since Parker was injured.

Manu Ginobili scored 17 points, Duncan had 16 points and 11 rebounds, and the Spurs rolled to their most lopsided victory of the year. Danny Green added 16 points and Kawhi Leonard had 14 for San Antonio (47-14), which has won eight of 10.

Making his first start of the season, Cory Joseph had eight points, four assists and one turnover in place of Parker, who sprained his left ankle in Friday's win over Sacramento and is expected to miss about a month.

Without Parker, the Spurs spread the floor and shared the ball, picking up 35 assists on 45 field goals. Duncan and Stephen Jackson both tied their season highs with six assists apiece.

"We moved the ball really well," Duncan said. "We have to with the lack of Tony's penetration, the way he does almost every play. We're going to move the ball and use a lot of pick-and-rolls. We're going to use a lot of body movement. Hopefully we can take advantage of that and make some shots and make some passes that make easy baskets for us, because we're going to need it."

Greg Monroe scored 16 points and Jose Calderon 14 for Detroit, which has lost five of six.

The Spurs had 10 assists in the first quarter while taking control of the game. San Antonio was credited with four assists on its first five baskets, including one for Leonard on a 3-pointer by Green for a 12-10 lead with 6 minutes left in the period.

Ginobili made his first six shots, including a 3-pointer off Jackson's inbounds pass with 1.8 seconds left in the quarter. He was undercut by Khris Middleton on the shot and made a free throw to complete a four-point play.

"You know what's coming, but we couldn't stop it," Detroit coach Lawrence Frank said. "We could've done a whole lot more to put more into the game to give ourselves a chance, but we didn't and that's credit to the champs. That's what it looks like. That's the blueprint."

After scoring 65 points in the first half of a 119-109 victory over the Spurs on Feb. 8 at Detroit, the Pistons trailed 60-40 in the rematch.

"Three weeks ago doesn't matter today," Detroit guard Will Bynum said. "It's a whole different ballgame, a different story. Today, they were the better team."

Duncan's 17-foot jumper on an assist from Joseph gave San Antonio a 53-33 lead with 3 minutes left in the first half. Joseph, recalled Thursday from San Antonio's development league affiliate, the Austin Toros, did not have a turnover in the second half.

"I thought he did a fine job," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "He played a good floor game. I like his defense. I like his aggressive attitude, as far as loose balls and sticking his nose in. He's a really committed, physical player and runs the show well."

The Spurs never led by fewer than 20 points in the second half, extending the advantage into the 30s late in the third quarter.

San Antonio held Detroit to 32.6 shooting, a season low for an opponent.

"I thought we played defense the way we have played it most of the season," Popovich said. "We had good focus."

NOTES: Duncan passed Buck Williams for 13th on the NBA career rebounding list, raising his total to 13,027. ... Parker has missed four games this season after sitting out six during last season's lockout-shortened season. ... Spurs F Boris Diaw (lower back strain) missed his second game of the season. ... Tiago Splitter is the only player to appear in every game for the Spurs this season. ... Detroit big man Andre Drummond (back) missed his 12th game. ... With his 15 assists against Sacramento on Friday, Ginobili became one of five active players to have 45 points, 15 rebounds and 15 assists in a game during his career. The others are the Lakers' Kobe Bryant, Oklahoma City's Russell Westbrook and Miami's LeBron James and Dwyane Wade. ... The Spurs have started 13 players this season, the most of any team. ... THE FACTS: Manu Ginobili picked up the slack left by the injured Tony Parker by scoring 17 points -- all of them in less than 12 minutes in the first half -- as the Spurs cruised after that to a 114-75 victory over Detroit on Sunday at AT&T Center.

Parker is expected to miss about four weeks after he sprained his left ankle Friday. He leads the Spurs with 21 points and 7.6 assists a game off 53-percent shooting. But the Spurs (47-14) didn't have trouble in any of those categories against Detroit (23-39). Three others beside Ginobili scored in double figures for San Antonio (Tim Duncan and Danny Green both scored 16 and Kawhi Leonard had 14), and the Spurs shot 51 percent with 35 assists setting up 45 baskets.

The Pistons are 4-6 since defeating San Antonio 23 days ago in Detroit, but have lost five of their last six. Greg Monroe led Detroit with 16 points and Charlie Villanueva had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

THE STAT: Parker is one of the fastest in the league with the ball, but the Spurs still managed to get out on the fast break. San Antonio led 25-6 in fast-break points, including 11-0 when leading by 20 at halftime.

TURNING POINT: It was a tie game nearing the six-minute mark of the first quarter when Ginobili came into the game for the first time. He hit all three shots from the floor, including a pair of 3-pointers, hit both foul shots, had an assist and drew a charging foul as the Spurs closed out the opening quarter by outscoring the Pistons 20-7. That's as close as the Pistons would get the rest of the night.

QUOTABLE II: "I thought the last two games we played better basketball. The bar is seriously raised against a team that is 24-3 at home (in San Antonio). If you come out of San Antonio and you lost and you competed your tail off, you're disappointed with the loss. But under these terms it's really disappointing. The heavyweights are heavyweights for a reason."

HOT: Ginobili scorched the first half. He was 6-for-6 from the floor and half of those were 3-pointers. He also made both of his free throws.

NOT: Knight had shot 21-for-36 in the past two games for Detroit, but his 3-for-14 showing Sunday sent him the other way.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Duncan had a double-double (16 points, 11 rebounds) for the fourth time in the last five games. Duncan passed Buck Williams for 13th in career rebounding with 13,027.

GOOD MOVE: The decision to start Cory Joseph at point with Parker injured looks to be a move with an eye on the long term. Parker could be out for a month (as many as 15 games), so Joseph got a chance to quickly break the ice. It also allowed Ginobili to maintain the substitute rotation by bringing him off the bench.

BAD MOVE: The Pistons had a chance to limit the damage of a bad first quarter when they trailed by nine with the ball in the final seconds. But Brandon Knight was called for an offensive foul when he drove into Ginobili in the lane with 1.8 seconds left. The Pistons brought rookie Khris Middleton off the bench, and he dropped off Ginobili on the long inbounds pass enough to leave him open for a 3-pointer. He got a hand up -- and into -- Ginobili, who sank the 3-pointer as the buzzer sounded and made the foul shot for a 4-point play that gave San Antonio a 32-19 lead after one.

ROOKIE WATCH: Nando De Colo was passed over for the starting point guard job as Popovich opted for a virtual rookie in Joseph (De Colo has appeared in 52 games this season with three starts compared to 41 games and two starts for Joseph in his two seasons). De Colo did not appear until 1 1/2 minutes were left in the third quarter, and he finished the game with three points and two assists in 13 1/2 minutes (Joseph was 3-for-5 in 18 minutes for eight points and four assists with a turnover).

NOTABLE: The 39-point victory margin is the largest of the season for San Antonio. ... Gary Neal (left calf tightness) originally was not scheduled to play for San Antonio. He's missed the last three games, but he came in when the Spurs had a 30-point lead with 8 1/2 minutes left and scored seven points on 3-for-7 shooting. ... Stephen Jackson returned for San Antonio after missing most of the last two games with a right ankle sprain, and he played 26 minutes and had six points, six assists and eight rebounds. ... Boris Diaw (low back strain) missed his second straight game for San Antonio.
