Mavericks-Rockets Preview

While the Dallas Mavericks have had their way with the Houston Rockets of late, they're not expecting anything to come easy during a crucial home-and-home set.

Hoping to make up some ground in the standings, the visiting Mavericks go for a 10th consecutive win over the Rockets on Sunday night.

Dallas (26-32) has its work cut out if it hopes to catch Houston (32-28), which sits in the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Mavericks are five games behind the Rockets, but sweeping the next two games could help them get back in the mix.

These Southwest Division rivals conclude their season series Wednesday in Dallas.

"It's been a frustrating and disappointing season obviously overall. We lost a couple of close games that we thought we should've had," Dirk Nowitzki said. "We have to go in with a free mindset and kind of forget what happened so far and let it all rip. Houston is a great team. (James) Harden is having a phenomenal year. They're a tough team. They're fast, athletic. So we got our hands full."

Dallas has taken nine straight from Houston - the last eight by single digits - for its longest win streak in the 33-year history of this rivalry. The Mavericks overcame Harden's 39 points thanks to a career high-tying 40 from O.J. Mayo in a 116-109 road win Dec. 8, then pulled out a 105-100 home victory Jan. 16.

"That's a (team that's) ahead of us and gives us the opportunity to gain ground and make them back track a little bit," Mayo said of the Rockets.

Two nights after blowing a 25-point lead versus Memphis, Dallas nearly let a 20-point lead slip away Friday before winning 98-90 at Brooklyn to snap a three-game skid. Nowitzki and Vince Carter scored 20 points apiece while Mayo added 17 for the Mavericks, who shot 50.0 percent.

"They're all big, and in dropping the last three, we needed one," coach Rick Carlisle told the team's official website. "We put together a solid game and we were solid enough to beat one of the better teams in the East, so that's a good sign for us. ... We've just got to keep emphasizing the importance of playing 48 minutes and not 20."

The Rockets avoided a third straight loss Friday, winning 118-110 at Orlando. Harden scored 24 points while Chandler Parsons and Carlos Delfino each had 21.

"All these games are going to count, especially if we want to make the playoff push," Harden said. "We try not to (think about it), because we try not to get sidetracked by thinking about too many other things."

While Houston's 106.6 points per game rank as the NBA's second-highest mark, it is yielding an average of 103.7 to rank 29th. The Mavericks are 22-7 when scoring at least 103 points compared to 4-25 when they don't.

"We have to definitely sharpen up defensively," said Parsons, averaging 21.7 points on 57.4 percent shooting over the last three games. "I think it is a lot of mental things that we are having breakdowns on, but honestly it is just effort. We have to have all of our focus on that end.

"We're trying to make a playoff push and we're not just trying to get in, we're trying to get a better seed."

Slowing down Nowitzki could prove key in these next two games. The former league MVP is averaging 21.2 points - 5.1 more than his season mark - on 53.2 percent shooting over the last five contests.

Dallas is 35-7 all-time versus Houston when Nowitzki scores at least 16 points. He had 19 in the Jan. 16 victory after missing the first matchup due to injury.

Parsons scores 32 as Rockets beat Mavericks

HOUSTON (AP) Chandler Parsons felt like he couldn't miss. When he finally did, he wasn't aware that he also missed matching a team record.

Parsons scored a career-high 32 points on 12-for-13 shooting and the Houston Rockets snapped a nine-game losing streak to Dallas with an easy 136-103 win over the Mavericks on Sunday night.

Jeremy Lin and James Harden added 21 points apiece and Lin had nine assists for the Rockets.

Parsons sank his first 11 shots and helped the Rockets outscore Dallas 44-17 in the third quarter to blow open a close game. Parsons made his fifth 3-pointer with 3:57 left in the quarter, then missed a 3-point try he forced on Houston's next possession.

"I got a little carried away," Parsons said. "I was feeling it, so I just shot it up there."

If that one had gone in, Parsons would've tied Yao Ming's single-game franchise record for field goals without a miss (12 for 12), set in 2009 against Miami. Parsons didn't know about Yao's mark until after the game.

"Now I really feel like an idiot," Parsons said.

O.J. Mayo scored 18 points and Shawn Marion had 14 to lead the Mavericks, who dropped six games behind Houston for the No. 8 spot in the Western Conference. The teams play again in Dallas on Wednesday night, their last meeting of the regular season.

"This game was all about disposition and attitude," Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said. "They had the stronger disposition and the stronger attitude and we've got to change that."

The Rockets led 64-61 at halftime, then opened the third quarter with a 15-0 spurt. Parsons sank his third 3-pointer, and he and Lin finished fast-breaks with layups to push the lead into double digits. Vince Carter was whistled for an offensive foul as the Mavericks' offensive execution fell apart.

Dallas missed its first six shots out of the break before Brandan Wright's driving layup. But the Rockets continued to hit all the open shots the Mavericks gave them and consecutive 3-pointers by Parsons and Harden pushed the lead to 25.

"The third quarter was ugly," Carlisle said. "I don't have a good explanation for it, other than they picked up their game and we didn't match it."

The Rockets blew 17-point leads in consecutive losses to Washington and Milwaukee before they beat Orlando on Friday night. Houston just poured it on when they got the big lead on Sunday night.

"In the past few games, we have built leads and given them up," Lin said, "so it was good to see us just really build on that."

Dallas had as many turnovers as it had field goals (6) in the third quarter, and Patrick Beverley's layup just before the buzzer made it 108-78.

Rookie Thomas Robinson, acquired from Sacramento last week, had 10 points and eight rebounds for Houston.

Nowitzki was held to eight points and committed three turnovers for Dallas.

"We want to get him the ball and we need good things to happen," Carlisle said. "The problem was, we just couldn't guard these guys."

Dallas started 9 for 14 from the field and hit its first three shots from 3-point range. Harden, averaging 26.3 points per game, missed five of his first seven shots. When he missed another driving layup, Parsons dunked home the putback, two of his nine first-quarter points.

The Mavericks stretched the lead to eight early in the second quarter. Francisco Garcia, seeing his first action for Houston since he was traded from Sacramento last week, sank two 3-pointers and a pull-up jumper to close the gap.

Dallas started 8 for 15 from 3-point range and led 50-41 midway through the second quarter. Houston's starters were back on the floor by the 5-minute mark of the second quarter and the Rockets started to take control with a 14-4 run.

Houston's defense stiffened in the final minutes of the half, forcing six turnovers. Parsons had a 3-pointer, then added a breakaway dunk after a long pass from Lin to put Houston up 62-59. Parsons went 7 for 7 and scored 18 points and Lin had seven assists in the first half.

NOTES: Dallas G Anthony Morrow sat out with a hip injury. ... Nowitzki, averaging 21.2 points and 10.4 rebounds in his previous five games, went 2 for 8 from the field and had only four rebounds. ... THE FACTS: Behind a scorching shooting performance from Chandler Parsons and a dominant third quarter, the Houston Rockets ended a lengthy losing streak against an in-state rival about as convincingly as anyone could have imagined. Parsons scored a career-high 32 points on 12-for-13 shooting, and the Rockets snapped a nine-game skid against the Dallas Mavericks with a 136-103 rout Sunday at Toyota Center. Jeremy Lin added 21 points and nine assists, and James Harden scored 21 and dished out seven dimes for Houston (33-28), which has won six of its last seven home games by an average of 16.0 points.

O.J. Mayo led Dallas (26-33), which has dropped four of its last five games overall and two of three on the road, with 18 points and four assists. Shawn Marion chipped in with 14 points and eight rebounds, while Dirk Nowitzki struggled mightily in the matchup with Parsons and netted only eight points on 2-for-8 shooting.

Dallas committed a plethora of turnovers and settled for low-percentage shot attempts after building an early lead, which helped Houston create a lightning-quick pace that the veteran Mavericks were unable to handle. The Rockets, who led 64-61 at halftime, buried Dallas with an avalanche of transition buckets and 3-pointers as they outscored the Mavericks 44-17 in the third quarter.

QUOTABLE: "Our spacing and our ball movement opened up the floor so much for me, and I just knocked down shots. When you get in a zone like that, it's one of the best feelings in the world for a basketball player."

THE STAT: The Rockets raced their way to a season-high 36 fast-break points, compared to Dallas' 18. Houston also posted an impressive 32-10 edge in points off turnovers, marking only the fifth time this season it has allowed less than 11 points off giveaways.

TURNING POINT: The Mavericks' bench sparked a second-quarter surge by Dallas, which built a 52-43 lead with 5:56 remaining before halftime. The Rockets took control of the game from there by amping up their defensive pressure to force the Mavericks into mental mistakes. Dallas committed nine turnovers over the next 10 minutes, leading to several transition buckets for Houston during a 36-9 run that gave it a 79-61 edge with 8:11 left to play in the third.

QUOTABLE II: "This is one of those situations where you have to step up to the challenge, and we just didn't do it. ... The problem is we couldn't guard these guys. We didn't guard them, and that's got to change ..."

HOT: Parsons was locked in from the opening tip, burying his first 11 shot attempts en route to his 12-for-13 performance from the floor. Parsons has netted at least 20 points in a career-best four consecutive contests, knocking down 65.0 percent (39-for-60) of his field-goal attempts during this stretch.

NOT: Nowitzki, who had averaged 21.2 points on 53.2 percent shooting and 10.4 rebounds over his previous four outings, failed to find a rhythm Sunday, shooting 2-for-8 (25.0 percent) overall. The 7-foot forward did not impact the game much on the glass, either, and finished with only four boards.

BAD MOVE: Already saddled with foul trouble after picking up three in the first half, Mayo was whistled for a cheap reach-in foul while guarding Harden less than two minutes into the third quarter. The shooting guard's absence left a void in Dallas' offense when the Rockets were threatening to pull away. The Mavericks bricked four consecutive shot attempts and committed three turnovers over their next seven possessions, allowing Houston to open up an insurmountable advantage.

GOOD MOVE: Houston coach Kevin McHale threw double-teams at Nowtizki throughout the evening, sticking with his strategy even after the Mavericks found an open man on the perimeter on several occasions during the first half. The long-range shots eventually stopped falling for Dallas, and with Mayo and Nowitzki failing to carry the load, the Mavericks' offense quickly transformed into a turnover-prone mess.

QUOTABLE III: "With this team, we're always better defensively if we're making shots. They're still at the age where their offense kind of dictates their defensive energy."

NOTABLE: Former Rockets star Tracy McGrady watched the game from a courtside seat. McGrady was on Houston's roster when it last defeated Dallas on Dec. 31, 2009, but he did not play due to injury. ... Harden is only two made free throws away from becoming the third Rocket in franchise history (Moses Malone, Kevin Martin) to nail at least 500 free-throw attempts in a season. ... The Rockets improved to 9-1 this season when Harden reaches at least 20 points and eight assists. ... Houston scored its first 102 points in only 34 minutes. ... The Rockets, who shot 57.5 percent overall, improved to 17-2 when they connect on at least half of their field-goal attempts. ... Houston is now 8-1 when it distributes at least 30 assists. . ... Marion tied Rod Strickland (1,616) for 25th on the NBA's all-time steals list when he recorded his only theft of the contests. ... Dallas fell to 7-22 this season when it hands out fewer assists than its opponent. ... The Mavericks are now 4-15 on the road when they commit more turnovers than their opponent.
