Thunder-Nuggets Preview

Though the Oklahoma City Thunder score more than any other team in the NBA, it might be an improving defense that proves to be the difference in their title chase.

Friday night will see that defense face a tough test when the Thunder visit the Denver Nuggets, whose high-octane attack has been bolstered by Ty Lawson's emergence as a dynamic scorer.

Oklahoma City (42-15) leads the league with 106.8 points per game, and Denver has moved up to third (105.5) while averaging 112.6 during its current 13-4 surge.

A season-worst three-game losing streak seems like a distant memory for the Thunder, who have since won three in row by an average of 30.3 points. As impressive as the offense has been during that span, averaging 116.0 points, the defense has been just as good in the last two games as opponents averaged 73.0 points on 31.9 percent shooting.

"We are doing great on defense," Russell Westbrook told the team's official website after a 119-74 home win over New Orleans on Wednesday.

Oklahoma City matched its largest margin of victory this season and held an opponent below 75 points for the third time in February.

"We are playing off our defense and getting stops and let the offense take care of itself," Westbrook added. "It all starts with defense regardless of what we are doing offensively."

Westbrook scored a game-high 29 while Kevin Durant posted his second triple-double since the All-Star break with 18 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists.

Durant tied a season low with eight field-goal attempts and had fewer than 20 points for the third time in four games, a stretch during which he's averaged 11.5 rebounds and 8.5 assists.

"I think Kevin continues to make a concerted effort to be a leader by example in terms of playing the game the right way and not being overly concerned with how many points he scores each night, but really just making the right plays," Derek Fisher said.

Fisher was scoreless on 0-for-4 shooting in his first game with the Thunder after signing with them for the stretch run for the second straight season. Ronnie Brewer had five points in 12 minutes in his debut after being acquired in a trade with New York.

The Thunder have dropped four of five on the road and now visit a Nuggets team which is one of the league's best at home, winning nine in a row and 14 of 15.

Denver (37-22) has surpassed 110 points in four straight overall as Lawson continues to fuel the scoring.

The point guard has at least 20 points in eight consecutive games, the longest such streak of his career. He is averaging 26.1 points on 52.8 percent shooting over that span but hasn't stopped making plays for teammates, with his 8.0 assists per game surpassing his season mark of 7.1.

Coach George Karl has started to lean more on Lawson for offense, and he came through with 30 points in a 111-109 win at Portland on Wednesday.

"I just said to him, 'We're not gonna run any more plays,'" Karl said of what he told Lawson late in the game. "'You've got one option, go into the paint and find it. Find the shot, not someone else.'"

The fourth-year pro's heightened scoring may be more crucial if top scorer Danilo Gallinari (bruised thigh) missed a third straight game.

This season series has seen each team win on its home floor, including a 121-118 Denver victory in overtime Jan. 20. Lawson totaled 13 points on 5-of-17 shooting in those two games.

Over the last five meetings, Durant is averaging 32.8 points and Westbrook is at 32.2.

Lawson's jumper lifts Nuggets over Thunder 105-103

DENVER (AP) Wilson Chandler tied his career high with 35 points and gladly watched Ty Lawson take the game-winning jumper.

"We've got a lot of guys who can score," Chandler said after Lawson's shot with 0.2 seconds left lifted the Denver Nuggets to a 105-103 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Friday night.

"I'm good whether it's in Ty's hands, both Dre's (Andre Iguodala and Andre Miller), Corey (Brewer), Gallo (Danilo Gallinari), whoever."

After shooting 13 for 19, Chandler said he was thrilled just to be such a big part of a big week for the Nuggets, who ran all over the Lakers, snapped a long losing streak in Portland and then capped it off with a thunderous win over the star-studded Thunder.

Guarded tightly by Thabo Sefolosha, Lawson swished his jumper from just inside the 3-point arc on the right wing. With no time to catch and shoot, the Thunder failed to get off a final tip attempt after their timeout.

"At the end they made a tough shot to beat us," said Kevin Durant, who tied it with a driving bank shot with 17.6 seconds remaining.

Miller inbounded to Lawson, who never gave up the ball. He said his shot was the only option: "I was going to take the last shot, make sure it was the last shot, either make it or we go to overtime."

Russell Westbrook scored a season-high 38 points and Durant had 25 for the Thunder.

"You give Oklahoma City any time to shoot, K.D. and Russell are big shot-makers and we didn't want to give them a chance," Lawson said. "We were going to go to overtime or win in regulation."

The combined 63 points from Russell and Durant were almost double the 34 points Denver's starters scored.

"They're tough guards," Chandler said, "so you want to make them take tough shots. It's like trying to stop the sun from shining - just hope for a cloudy day."

With Gallinari back in the starting lineup after missing two games with a bruised thigh, Chandler went back to being the Nuggets' sixth man and he led a bench that outscored the Thunder's reserves 71-11

"Say what?" Durant replied. "Jeesh. We've got to do a better job of helping them out, give them a better cushion."

Of course, Chandler was responsible for more than half of the Nuggets' points off the bench.

"That's a great asset to have," Thunder coach Scott Brooks said. "That's one of the strengths of their team. They're deep, they have a lot of good players that play, a lot of skill players. Thirty-five points, you don't expect that. He stepped up when the moment was needed and he made big shots."

Not even Chandler could have expected to score 35 points, though.

"Honestly, I thought I'd have a pretty good night but 35? No," Chandler said. "I was playing in my rhythm and taking open shots."

Nuggets coach George Karl said: "Well, we owe this one to Wilson Chandler. He was great. We wanted to play small against their big lineup because Scottie always gets small against me. So, the substitution was earlier and quicker and then he has a great game."

Chandler logged 35 minutes to Gallinari's 22.

The Nuggets improved to 25-3 at the Pepsi Center, including 2-0 against Oklahoma City, which has lost five of its last six road games. Only the Miami Heat, at 26-3, are better at home.

Oklahoma City trailed 85-75 heading into the fourth quarter but tied it at 91 on Westbrook's fast-break basket with just under 6 minutes left.

Westbrook's free throw with 3:17 left gave the Thunder their first lead of the second half, 97-96.

The Nuggets came back to take a 101-99 lead on Miller's finger roll, but Durant's two free throws tied it again.

Lawson missed a jumper just inside a minute and Durant missed at the other end.

Chandler's layup with 22.4 seconds left gave the Nuggets a 103-101 lead and gave him 35 points, tying his career high set in 2010 for the New York Knicks against Sacramento.

After a timeout, Durant's bank shot tied it at 103 and Denver called a timeout with 17.6 seconds remaining, then put the ball in Lawson's hands.

NOTES: The Thunder had hit 94 percent of their free throws (130 of 138) over their previous five games. They missed 10 of 34 attempts Friday night. Westbrook was 12 of 17 from the line - same as the Nuggets. ... Denver C Timofey Mozgov played the final 0.2 seconds as Karl put his 7-footer on the inbounder. ... Durant played all but 21 seconds in the game and was never whistled for a foul, much to Karl's chagrin.

THE FACTS: Ty Lawson rose up and hit a 23-foot jumper over Thabo Sefolosha with 0.2 showing on the clock and the Denver Nuggets beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 105-103 on Friday night.

Wilson Chandler came off the bench to tie his career high with 35 points to pace the Nuggets, who have won 10 straight home games and four in a row overall.

Russell Westbrook led the Thunder with a season-high 38 points and Kevin Durant added 25 points and 14 rebounds. Oklahoma City had its three-game winning streak snapped.

QUOTABLE: "I just wanted to walk it down to the last five seconds. Sefolosha was guarding Wilson, so he switched on me. I took the shot and it went in. It felt good, it looked good. That was the best shot I shot all night. I was sighing when it went in."

THE STAT: In their five games prior to Friday, the Thunder shot 94.2 percent from the foul line and missed eight free throws in that span. They missed 10 against Denver, costing them the win.

TURNING POINT: The Nuggets coaching staff has been pushing Lawson to be more aggressive, and showed why on the last possession. He calmly dribbled down the clock, and when it went under 5 seconds and got the shot off over Sefolosha, who has eight inches on the 5-foot-11 guard.

QUOTABLE II: "He made a contested shot over one of our best defenders. A lot of times we've made that stop. He made a tough shot. They played a little bit better and made one more play than us."

HOT: Westbrook and Chandler dueled throughout the game, with Westbrook having a slight advantage. In the first half Chandler scored 18 points -- just six short of his season high for a game -- and Westbrook had 23, including a buzzer-beating 36-foot 3-pointer that got the Thunder within 56-47 at the break. The duel continued into the second half and while Westbrook finished with more points, Chandler left the arena happy.

GOOD MOVE: The Nuggets were sloppy in the first quarter, turning the ball over twice in the first 30 seconds and six times overall. They cleaned it up the rest of the way, turning it over just eight more times.

NOTABLE: The Nuggets improved to 25-3 at home, which is the second-best record in the league behind Miami's 26-3. ... Chandler last scored 35 on Feb. 9, 2010, when he was playing for the Knicks. ... Denver had 14 steals. It's the fifth straight game of at least 11 steals. ... Westbrook is averaging 35.3 points in three games against Denver this year.
