Pistons-Hornets Preview

The New Orleans Hornets handily got by the Detroit Pistons two weeks ago despite Eric Gordon's absence and an ugly line from Anthony Davis.

Coach Monty Williams' team certainly missed both guys during its last game.

While Gordon figures to return, Davis is uncertain to be available again Friday night as the Hornets host the Pistons.

New Orleans (20-39) rolled to an easy 105-86 victory at Detroit (23-37) on Feb. 11 behind Ryan Anderson's 31 points and Robin Lopez's 23 and 10 rebounds. Davis scored one point and shot 0 of 7 that night while Gordon, who continues to sit out the second games of back-to-backs as he works his way back from a knee injury, didn't play.

One night after falling 101-97 to Brooklyn, the Hornets never really had a chance Wednesday at Oklahoma City with Gordon and Davis sidelined. Anderson had 14 points but was the only player to score in double figures as the Hornets suffered their most lopsided defeat of the season, 119-74.

Davis sprained his left shoulder in a collision Tuesday and is listed as day-to-day.

"That's part of the game. We don't make any excuses about not having guys," said Williams, whose team has dropped five of six. "If you get a chance to play in the NBA, you've got to cherish it. It's a blessing to play in the NBA. Not everybody looks at it that way."

Greivis Vasquez had six points and shot 3 of 13 on Wednesday while Lopez scored seven on 2-of-10 shooting. The Hornets were outrebounded 48-25.

"We're young and we're learning but that can't be an excuse every time we lose," said rookie Austin Rivers, who started in place of Gordon. "We just have to flush this away and move forward. We still have a lot of games left. We've got so much to improve on.

"Things can turn around so quickly. We've got so much talent and it's not just talent, we work hard. We work so hard. So, we've just got to keep building and it'll come."

The Pistons had dropped three in a row before kicking off a three-game road trip with Wednesday's 96-95 win over Washington. Brandon Knight, who missed the previous three games due to a right knee injury, returned to score a career-high 32 points.

"The biggest thing for us was just playing with energy," Knight said. "That's what I saw sitting on the side for the past three games - our lack of fight. For me, it wasn't about making shots, it was about coming in and trying to make sure we played Pistons basketball."

Detroit has won eight straight when Knight posts at least 17 points. The second-year guard scored just seven on 3-of-10 shooting in the Feb. 11 loss to New Orleans.

"He's a big part of what we do," center Greg Monroe said of Knight, "so whenever he's on the floor, guys do feel better."

Monroe also came up big Wednesday with 26 points and 11 boards. Recently acquired point guard Jose Calderon, meanwhile, matched a season high with 18 assists.

Detroit recorded assists on each of its first 16 field goals, its best such start in at least a decade.

"(Calderon) got our guys easy baskets and delivered the ball exactly at the right time," coach Lawrence Frank said. "He will continue to get better because he is still learning our guys."

The Pistons have dropped 28 of their last 29 road matchups against Western Conference teams, including all eight this season by an average of 12.2 points. They've lost three straight at New Orleans, but haven't visited since Dec. 8, 2010.

Vasquez leads Hornets past Pistons 100-95

NEW ORLEANS (AP) As Greivis Vasquez dribbled along the perimeter in the final half-minute of a one-point game, he could only hope to overcome the memories of anti-clutch moments that have plagued the young Hornets.

"In my head I've got all the games that we couldn't close and we lost," Vasquez said. "That was one thing I got in my mind at the end when I took the last shot. We were just messing a lot of games up at the end and I've got to get better quick. ... We have to make good decisions at the end of the game."

Now there's evidence of progress on that front.

Vasquez capped a 25-point, nine-assist performance by hitting a running floater off the backboard with 12 seconds left, and New Orleans beat the Detroit Pistons 100-95 on Friday night to snap a two-game skid.

"He's one of the most improved players in the league," Pistons coach Lawrence Frank said of Vasquez. "He's got great court vision plus he shoots it well enough where you have to respect his shot."

Eric Gordon added 21 points and Ryan Anderson 19 points and 13 rebounds for the Hornets, who were short-handed in the frontcourt with starting forward Anthony Davis sitting out his second straight game because of a sprained left shoulder. New Orleans was also without 7-footer Jason Smith, a top reserve forward and center. The club announced earlier Friday that he'd miss the rest of the season with a right shoulder injury.

Anderson, known more for his scoring, said he knew he had to pick up some of the slack on the defensive end.

"We need to really get to the boards a little bit more, so that's something I came out tonight and knew I needed to do," Anderson said. "It's tough because they're a big team and we had to be active."

New Orleans native Greg Monroe had 27 points and 10 rebounds for Detroit, while Brandon Knight added 22 points, including a 3-pointer that tied the score at 91.

Vasquez's final basket made it 98-95. Rodney Stuckey then missed a 3-point attempt that could have tied it in the final seconds, but Frank said that shot came only after Detroit's initial plan for a quick two points failed.

"We wanted to go directly into Greg," Frank said. "We didn't execute like we wanted to, and that was disappointing."

Though not for Hornets coach Monty Williams.

"I was really pleased the way we defended the last play," Williams said. "It was nice to see us execute properly. We forced Stuckey into a fast shot."

New Orleans closed the third quarter with an 8-0 run, capped by Anderson's second 3, to take a 74-69 lead.

New Orleans was still ahead 91-84 when Gordon scored inside, but Detroit responded with a 9-0 run that Knight began with a driving layup. Jason Maxiell then dunked, Knight came back with his tying 3 and Monroe dunked to give the Pistons a 93-91 lead with 1:58 left.

Vasquez then hit two free throws to tie it, Gordon added another free throw and then Anderson used a perimeter fake to set up a driving layup that made it 96-93. Maxiell had a chance to tie it when he dunked as he was fouled, but he missed the free throw, allowing Vasquez to put New Orleans up by three again with his late floater.

The Pistons wound up shooting 50 percent (39 of 78), scoring 56 points in the paint. But the Pistons also turned the ball over 14 times, were outrebounded 47-40 and were outscored at the free-throw line, 23-10.

The game was competitive throughout, with Detroit building the largest lead of either team at 10 points in the first quarter. There were 12 ties and nine lead changes.

"It was a tough game and both teams played really hard," Monroe said. "A couple more plays could have won the game for us. They had more plays.

"They did a good job fighting for the ball," Monroe added. "They just kept working harder than us, that's all."

Al-Farouq Aminu had 14 rebounds and Robin Lopez scored 10 points for New Orleans. Maxiell and Kyle Singler each scored 10 for Detroit, while Jose Calderon had 11 assists.

New Orleans struggled throughout the game to stop Monroe, who helped Detroit take a 14-4 in the opening five minutes with strong inside baskets to the delight of a large contingent of fans in his hometown.

Detroit maintained the lead into the second quarter, going ahead 33-25 on Stuckey's fast-break layup.

New Orleans then surged ahead for the first time with a 10-0 run highlighted by Vasquez's three-point play and Anderson's 3-pointer.

Gordon had 18 of his points in the opening half, including six free throws, the last of which put the Hornets up 45-40.

The Pistons' however, took a 49-47 lead into halftime after scoring the last five points of the period, including Monroe's putback after he'd grabbed two offensive rebounds in the same possession.

NOTES: With Smith missing the remainder of the season with a torn labrum in his right shoulder, Williams said the Hornets would try to sign another big man soon. ... The game was the second and last between the teams. The Hornets won the first, 105-86 in Detroit on Feb. 11. ... With Monroe being a local native, the Hornets permitted fans wearing T-shirts bearing his name to line the tunnel leading to the court from the visitors' locker room, and they cheered wildly for the visiting Pistons as they took the court for the second half. ... Sitting in the first few rows were singer and songwriter Brian McKnight, actor and "Treme" star Wendell Pierce, and former LSU star Tryann Mathieu.

THE FACTS: The New Orleans Hornets followed up their second-worst regular season loss in franchise history by finding a way to hold on 100-95 against the Detroit Pistons.

New Orleans had lost two consecutive games, including a 45-point loss at Oklahoma City. And it was playing without forwards Anthony Davis (left shoulder sprain) and Jason Smith (torn labrum).

But the Hornets (21-39) still found a way to outrebound Detroit by seven, including 18-11 on the offensive glass. Ryan Anderson and Al-Farouq Aminu each had six offensive rebounds and they combined for 27 total boards. Anderson finished with 19 points starting in place of Davis.

The Pistons (23-38), behind center Greg Monroe's 27-point, 10-rebound performance in his home town, wouldn't go quietly. New Orleans led 91-84 when Detroit reeled off a 9-0 run that briefly gave it a 93-91 lead with 1:58 to go in the game.

After a Hornets' timeout, New Orleans' Greivis Vasquez, who scored 13 points in the fourth quarter, earned a trip to the free-throw line where he sank both attempts, tying the game at 93. New Orleans would never trail again.

Eric Gordon's free throw preceded a clutch banked 9-footer by Vasquez that gave New Orleans a 98-95 lead with just 12 seconds to play. Detroit's Stuckey couldn't convert an off-balanced 3-pointer and New Orleans finished with only its second win since the All-Star break.

Vasquez finished with a team-high 25 points and recorded nine assists. Gordon added 21 points and Robin Lopez scored 10 points and had five blocked shots.

The Hornets won in spite of allowed Detroit to shoot 50 percent to their 43.2 percent. Additionally, the Pistons outscored New Orleans 56-46 in the paint.

THE STAT: 31 to 16 -- The difference in the game for the Hornets came at the free-throw line. New Orleans shot 31 free throws to Detroit's 16. The Hornets converted 23 of their attempts, including 5 of 6 in the final two minutes when they put the game away.

TURNING POINT: With New Orleans leading 96-96 and 52 seconds remaining on the clock, the game was far from over. And it looked dire when Anderson's long-range 3-pointer was off the mark. But Aminu found a way to grab the ball, tying up Detroit's Rodney Stuckey. On the ensuing jump ball, Aminu tipped it to Vasquez, who hit a nine-foot running bank shot that gave New Orleans ultimately the points it needed to win the game.

HOT: Detroit's Brandon Knight, coming off a career-high 32 points against Washington, remained hot against the Hornets. He went 10 of 18 for 22 points and finished with a plus-11 statistic, highest for any Piston.

NOT: New Orleans guard Eric Gordon kept the Hornets in the first half with 18 points. But he went cold in the second, going 1-for-7 in the second half as New Orleans let a late fourth-quarter lead slip away.

BAD MOVE: The Hornets had only one center available with Davis sidelined due to a left shoulder injury. But Detroit didn't take advantage, missing opportunities to post up with Monroe. Though the Pistons outscored the Hornets by 10 in the paint, most of those were drives, not chances for the 6-foot-11 Monroe to post up Hornets 6-8 forward Lance Thomas.

NOTABLE: The Hornets swept the season series with Detroit 2-0. ... Monroe's double-double was his 28th of the season. ... Anderson's 19 points and 13 rebounds gave him his eight double-double of the season. The 13 rebounds matched a season-high for the New Orleans forward.
