Clippers-Pacers Preview

Two teams that have been dominant lately will meet Thursday as the Indiana Pacers host the Los Angeles Clippers. But with the Clippers' front line wreaking havoc on opponents, the Pacers - playing without their starting center - could be in trouble.

Indiana has won 10 of 12, including the past five by an average of 23.8 points, while Los Angeles has won six of seven with the victories coming by 16.7 points.

A sixth straight win for the Pacers (36-21) would be a season best, but they will be without Roy Hibbert, who was suspended for one game after being ejected for an altercation toward the end of a 108-97 win over Golden State on Tuesday.

Hibbert was tossed due to a shoving match with David Lee that began under the basket after a missed shot and eventually spilled into the first row of seats.

The former All-Star is averaging 10.0 points, 8.1 rebounds and 2.6 blocked shots. If the Pacers find any benefit to a brief absence for Hibbert, it could be strengthened unity after his teammates quickly backed him up during the incident.

"There were two or three guys coming after (Hibbert)," said David West, averaging 20.6 points in 10 games this month. "We preach and talk about togetherness, so that's part of what we're going to do. We're going to defend one another. They came after him too many times."

A weakened interior defense may be too much for the Pacers to overcome against the Clippers (41-18), as Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan continue to score efficiently inside.

Griffin and Jordan's combined 56.4 field-goal percentage this season is tied with Miami's LeBron James and Udonis Haslem for the second-highest among starting frontcourt duos behind Denver's Kosta Koufos and Kenneth Faried (57.4).

Over the last six games, Griffin has averaged 20.2 points on 62.2 percent shooting while Jordan has shot 20 for 31 (64.5 percent). Even small forward Caron Butler has stepped up in the past five with 16.0 points per game on 50.0 percent shooting - both well above his season averages.

That trio combined for 53 points and shot 23 for 31 from the field in a 106-84 win over Charlotte on Tuesday. Griffin and Jordan provided 12 of the team's 13 dunks in that game, and the duo is a big reason why the Clippers have outrebounded five of seven opponents during the team's current surge.

"DeAndre and Blake are two of the best athletes you've got in the league," the Bobcats' Gerald Henderson said. "If you don't put a body on them and be physical with them, they're going to play over the top of the rim."

The Pacers hope to get a bigger boost from Danny Granger in this third game back, but it's been a struggle so far. He's 2 for 17 from the field for seven points since returning from a knee injury that had kept him out all season.

Granger has averaged 26.3 points over his last three games against the Clippers while hitting 11 of 17 3-pointers. He scored 25 in a 102-89 home win over Los Angeles on March 20 in the teams' last matchup.

Griffin had 23 points in that game and scored a career-high 47 in the previous meeting.

Clippers guards Eric Bledsoe and Jamal Crawford are expected to make the trip to Indiana after missing Tuesday's game. Crawford was with his wife, who gave birth to the couple's daughter Monday, and Bledsoe remains day-to-day with a sore left calf.

Clippers end Pacers streak with 99-91 win

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) The Los Angeles Clippers took advantage of Roy Hibbert's suspension Thursday night.

Between Blake Griffin's dunks and Chris Paul's drives, the Clippers' stars dominated the middle, forced Indiana into an uncharacteristically sloppy game and beat the Pacers at their own physical game inside, too.

It was the perfect recipe for getting past one of the NBA's hottest teams.

Paul scored 29 points, one short of his season high, and Griffin finished with 18 points and 14 rebounds as the Clippers held off Indiana's frenetic late charge for a 99-91 victory.

"I watch the Pacers a lot. (David) West is like my brother, and they have been beating teams real bad lately, especially here at home," Paul said. "So I think this is a good win for us. I think every night we are going into different arenas and the other team knows they are in for a dogfight. I think we're becoming like a San Antonio or a Miami or any of the other top teams."

On paper, it looked like any other night for the Clippers (42-18).

They dominated in the paint, outscoring Indiana 50-32. Griffin finished with at least 17 points, seven rebounds and two assists in his eighth straight game and, of course, added a couple of more dunks to his highlight reel.

Paul, second in the league in assists per game, had eight more on a night he went 11 of 18 from the field, 6 of 6 from the free-throw line and grabbed six rebounds. And Jamal Crawford scored 23 points in 27 minutes off the bench.

Los Angeles (42-18) won its third straight and this time beat one of the NBA's best home teams on its own court.

But from the looks of it, it was a tough night, too.

Trey Thompkins sat out with a bruised left knee. Grant Hill kept an ice pack on his sore lower back all night and never made it into the game.

Eric Bledsoe played just 13 minutes, icing his sore left calf most of the night, and Matt Barnes had ice packs on both his knees when he wasn't playing, too.

And that list didn't even count two starters who got dinged during the game - center DeAndre Jordan, who left early in the third quarter with a bloody nose, and Griffin, who briefly pulled his shooting sleeve down so trainers could check his right elbow after he was fouled in the third quarter and crashed hard to the floor.

"It's not great," said Griffin, who has been dealing with a bursa sac problem in the elbow. "I got it drained a couple weeks ago, right after the All-Star break, so I'm sure it will puff right back up."

Whether it was because the Pacers were without Hibbert or it was just an off night, Indiana didn't look anything like the team that had won five straight by an average margin of 23.8 points.

Instead, the Pacers (36-22) held the lead just four times all night - never by more than two points - and couldn't keep the lead for more than one defensive possession.

David West finished with 22 points and six rebounds, All-Star Paul George had 20 points and five assists and Danny Granger played his best game since returning from a left knee injury last weekend. Granger finished with a season-high 12 points in 19 minutes on 5-of-10 shooting.

What went wrong?

The Pacers' defense allowed Los Angeles to shoot 48.8 percent from the field and their imprecise passing led to 20 turnovers.

The biggest reason may have been the absence of Hibbert, who drew a one-game suspension for starting a shoving match in Tuesday night's victory over Golden State.

"Roy Hibbert makes a big difference in our team," Pacers coach Frank Vogel said. "Everybody says he's having a bad year, but he's having a good year. We have the No. 1 defense in the league and he's a big part of it."

That much was evident on Thursday at every key turn in the game.

The Clippers used three 13-3 spurts - one in the second quarter, one late in the third and again to start the fourth - to seize control. When the final flurry ended, the Clippers had a commanding 89-72 lead with 7:06 to play.

Indiana charged back with two 3-pointers from George and another from George Hill. And when George made two free throws with 2:45 to go, the Pacers were within 91-87.

But Paul refused to let the Pacers get any closer. He scored the final eight points for the Clippers, making a 16-foot fadeaway, driving in for two layups and making two free throws to earn the praise of the Pacers coach.

"Best point guard in the universe right now," Vogel said.

Notes: Granger's nine points in the first half topped his scoring total (seven) for the entire season. Thursday was only his third game back. ... The Clippers have won four straight road games including one against the Lakers in the same building the Clippers call home. ... These teams will meet for the second and final time April 1 and the Clippers will be trying to pull off their first season sweep of Indiana since 2003-04. ... Pacers coach Frank Vogel needs two wins for No. 100 in his career.

THE FACTS: When things started to get a little out of control, Chris Paul took matters into his own hands. The Clippers' star point guard responded to a 13-0 Indiana run by scoring his team's final eight points down the stretch to quell a Pacers comeback and deliver a 99-91 victory Thursday in Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Paul finished with 29 points and eight assists, game-highs in both categories, while Jamal Crawford scored 23 off the bench for the Clippers (42-18). Blake Griffin scored 18 points with 14 rebounds. David West scored 22 and Paul George 20 for Indiana (36-22), which had a five-game win streak snapped.

THE STAT: The Clippers had a modest four dunks, two from Griffin, who raised his league-leading total to 147.

TURNING POINT: The Clippers tried to pull away twice but Indiana reeled them back. Griffin scored eight in a 13-0 run in the third quarter that pushed the visitors' lead to 72-63, but the Pacers trimmed it to 78-71 early in the fourth. Five different Clippers then scored in an 11-1 run as Indiana missed nine shots in a row to fall behind 89-72. Trailing by 17 with 5:38 remaining, however, Paul George got hot, hitting a pair of 3-pointers in a 13-0 Indiana run that cut the lead to 91-87 with 2:45 left. That's when Paul stepped in, hitting an off-balance jumper, then converting two drives that made it 97-91 with 31.3 seconds remaining. Indiana didn't make a basket in the final 2:14.

HOT: Paul shot 11-for-18, while Griffin went 7-for-10 and Crawford shot 9-for-16 for the Clippers, who shot .488 as a team despite uncharacteristically poor 3-point shooting (4-for-23). ... Lance Stephenson shot 7-for-8 for the Pacers and Danny Granger had an encouraging 5-for-10 shooting performance after going 2-for-17 in his first two games back from a knee injury. ...
