The Memphis Grizzlies may have traded away their top scorer last month, but that hasn't slowed them down.

A visit by the Dallas Mavericks may keep them rolling.

In much different fashion, the Grizzlies go for their second eight-game winning streak of the season Wednesday night when they attempt to beat the Mavericks again at home.

Memphis (37-18) dealt Rudy Gay to Toronto on Jan. 30 in a three-team deal that delivered Tayshaun Prince, Austin Daye and Ed Davis.

The Grizzlies dropped three of their first four following the move, but have since put that behind them by reeling off seven wins in a row.

Memphis won a season-high eight straight games from Nov. 2-17, averaging 102.3 points. The current run has been engineered with tremendous defensive play, limiting opponents to an average of 87.0 points - 78.7 over the past three games.

That success was evident Sunday, when the Grizzlies held Brooklyn to 37.7 percent shooting in a 76-72 road win.

"The key was our defense," coach Lionel Hollins said. "I said to people before the game that the way Brooklyn plays and we play, it could be 76-70 and it was pretty close."

The Grizzlies have stifled the Mavericks (25-31) while winning four consecutive home matchups, allowing 81.5 points per game and 41.1 percent from the floor - 26.0 from beyond the arc.

They kept that streak going with a 92-82 victory Dec. 21, but fell 104-83 at Dallas on Jan. 12.

Zach Randolph managed just six points and four boards in 19 minutes of last month's loss after getting 17 and 13, respectively, at home in December.

The forward is averaging 15.6 points and 12.1 rebounds during the winning streak.

While the Grizzlies are fourth in the Western Conference, the Mavs are 11th and five games behind Houston for the eighth and final playoff position, putting their string of 12 straight years in the postseason in jeopardy.

Their latest performance didn't help, falling 95-90 to Milwaukee while Dirk Nowitzki put up 21 points and pulled down 20 rebounds. It was the star forward's first 20-20 performance since April 3, 2003.

Dallas has split its last six games, and each of the three defeats have come by five or fewer points.

"It's not looking good for sure," Nowitzki said. "This league is crazy and I've seen a lot happen. But it's definitely getting tight. If we want to make a push, we have to find a way to win those close games."

Nowitzki is doing his part, averaging 25.3 points and 13.3 rebounds while making 55.8 percent from the field over the past three games.

He had 17 points against Memphis last month after sitting out in December while recovering from right knee surgery. However, he has only 8.3 points and 5.7 boards per game over his three previous visits to Memphis.

O.J. Mayo went 3 for 11 from the floor while finishing with 10 points at Memphis in December, when he made his return after leaving the Grizzlies via free agency.

The guard, the third overall pick in the 2008 draft by Minnesota, has seen his production and playing time drop significantly over four seasons.

He's averaging 17.5 points with Dallas, his highest output since finishing with the same amount in 2009-10.

Grizzlies match largest comeback, top Mavs 90-84

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) The Memphis Grizzlies took a horrendous start and turned it into one of the best comebacks in franchise history.

The Grizzlies began rebounding from a 25-point deficit in the second quarter, scored 20 unanswered points to start the third and defeated the Dallas Mavericks 90-84 on Wednesday night.

The reversal matched the largest comeback in franchise history. The Grizzlies also came from 25 down to win at Portland on March 25, 2002.

"It was unbelievable," Memphis point guard Mike Conley said. "I felt like we were floating above at another level. I've never seen us play so hard and do the things we were doing.

"It seemed like it was a blur, it happened so quick."

Zach Randolph scored 22 points and Marc Gasol added 21 as the Grizzlies stormed back to win their eighth straight, also matching a franchise-best. Quincy Pondexter finished with 12 and Austin Daye added 10, all in the first half, for Memphis. Gasol had 12 rebounds and Randolph 10 as Memphis outrebounded Dallas 46-34.

After giving up 38 points with poor defense in the first quarter, and seeing the Mavericks build the lead to 25 before halftime, Memphis outscored Dallas 71-46 in the final three quarters.

"It's a tough loss and a disappointing loss," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said. "We all own it, and that's the truth."

Shawn Marion led the Mavericks with 16 points, Elton Brand finished with 12 off the bench, and O.J. Mayo added 11, despite going 5 of 13 from the field. Dirk Nowitzki had 10 for Dallas, which dropped its third straight.

Trailing 51-26 with 5:25 to go in the second quarter halftime, the Grizzlies went on a 36-4 run spanning intermission, including the 20-0 rally to open the third quarter.

The Mavericks went more than 8 minutes to start the second half before Mayo split a pair of free throws for Dallas' first point in the quarter.

"They turned up their defensive pressure, and we didn't respond to it," Carlisle said of the rally. "We had four turnovers at the end of the first half that cut into our lead and gave them momentum. We did a poor job at the start of the third quarter, obviously."

Memphis would outscore Dallas 24-5 in the third as the Mavericks hit only two shots. The five points were a franchise low for a Memphis opponent in a quarter. The third-quarter tally meant Memphis had crafted a 40-9 run since the 25-point deficit in the second quarter.

"I just think the guys had more of a sense of urgency," Memphis guard Tony Allen said. "We put a collective effort into getting those stops and understanding what those guys were running.

"I thought (the Mavericks') legs got tired coming off a back-to-back. We were able to get the wind up under us, weather the storm and play Grizzlies basketball."

Memphis would stretch the advantage to nine near the 8-minute mark of the fourth. Dallas pushed back, and when Brand hit a 10-footer with 2:50 left, the Mavericks were within two at 80-78.

But Brand was called for a foul on Gasol, then a technical. Memphis hit all three of the ensuing free throws, and Dallas got no closer than five points the rest of the way.

"They started picking us up and really got into us," Nowitzki said of Memphis' turnaround. "We didn't really have much going from that point on. They got going and were all over us. That really sums it up. They put the pressure on us, and that was the game."

The Mavericks, who defeated Memphis 104-83 in Dallas on Jan. 12, sprinted to an early lead on accurate shooting. Dallas connected on nine of its first 11 shots, while Memphis missed its first eight and managed to connect on only three of its first 14.

A lot of the Grizzlies' misses came from an early aggressive defense from the Mavericks.

The Mavericks hardly looked as though they were the ones playing the second night of a back-to-back. They had much more energy, and Memphis' lack of defense allowed the Mavericks to have open shots. That meant Dallas still shooting 65 percent near the midway point of the second quarter.

Memphis coach Lionel Hollins said he noticed the team lagging at practice Tuesday after taking Monday off, then again at shootaround earlier Wednesday. That spilled over to the poor start, he said.

"We aren't that talented," Hollins said of the thought that his team can turn it up at any point. "We have to be prepared. We have to be mentally and physically ready to play."

Dallas continued to extend the advantage until Memphis started its comeback and trailed 55-42 at the break. Nowitzki led the Mavericks with 14 points. Gasol led Memphis with 13, while Daye came off the bench with 10.

"At halftime, (Hollins) didn't have too many words," Randolph said when asked the difference between the halves. "He said we know what we are doing and knew what we had to do and left it to us. We came together and kept fighting. It was one of probably the best games of the season."

Conley tried to recall a similar comeback in his career, but struggled for a specific one.

"This one was by far one of the most memorable because it was so out of hand so early," Conley said, adding: "It was just unbelievable."

NOTES: The Mavericks' 38 first-quarter points matched the most allowed by Memphis in a quarter this season. ... Nowitzki passed Larry Bird in the first quarter on the career list for made field goals. Nowitzki is now in 21st place. .. Marion grabbed an offensive rebound in the third quarter, giving him 2,500 in his career. ... It was the largest Grizzlies comeback at home in franchise history. The previous record was a 23-point comeback on Jan. 29, 2000, against New Jersey when the Grizzlies were in Vancouver. ... The 20 unanswered points to open the third, plus four straight to close the first half, was the most consecutive points (24) in franchise history. ... The Grizzlies had another eight-game winning streak near the start of the season.

Notebook: Grizzlies 90, Mavericks 84

THE FACTS: It's not often a team can fall behind by 25 points, shoot 37.7 percent for the game, go seven minutes down the stretch in the fourth quarter without a field goal, and still come away with a win. That's what the Memphis Grizzlies were able to do against Dallas Wednesday night in their 90-84 win at FedExForum. The win matched a franchise record for the largest comeback in team history, which was last done on March 25, 2002 at Portland. The Grizzlies did it with defense, holding Dallas to just 29 points in the second half to extend their winning streak to a season-high tying eight games, which also ties the team's record.

QUOTABLE: "They [the Grizzlies] applied pressure and we didn't attack it well. It's another tough lesson in a season full of tough lessons. Our guards have to understand when they see that kind of pressure that they have to attack it right away. We've got to do more to help them if we can."

THE STAT: Dallas outscored the Grizzlies 38-19 after one quarter of play, the most points allowed in a quarter by the Grizzlies this season. From there, the Mavericks were outscored 71-46, thanks to a five-point third quarter. That set a record for the fewest points allowed by the Grizzlies in any quarter.

TURNING POINT: The Grizzlies trailed Dallas 51-26 with 5:25 remaining in the second quarter. From there, they went on a 36-4 run that carried over into the third quarter. That run was capped by a 24 unanswered points that allowed the Grizzlies to take a 62-55 lead. That is the most unanswered point in franchise history.

HOT: The Grizzlies defense is what won this game, especially the second half. In addition to holding Dallas to 29 points in the half, they also held them to 27 percent shooting as Dallas missed 20 of its 37 shots.

NOT: Dallas shot 59 percent from the floor in the first half. The Mavericks evidently left their hot shooting in the locker room. In the third quarter, the Mavs shot 11.8 percent, making just 2-for-17 from the floor and scoring only five points.

GOOD MOVE: Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins burned his first timeout one minute, 15 seconds into the game. A second one game with 8:45 left in the first quarter with his team down 10-0. That's when he began yanking his starters. By the 7:10 mark, only center Marc Gasol remained on the floor, but even he was eventually replaced. The move worked as the Grizzlies second unit, led by Austin Daye's 10 first half points, gave the team the spark it needed. The starters returned and closed out the half on a 16-4 run that trimmed the Mavs' lead to 55-42 at the half.

QUOTABLE II: "I don't know what their mindset was coming in, but it wasn't about going out and being professional and doing what they were supposed to do and playing the way they are capable of playing. ... I had to sub early. I took everybody out for a second. Guys were pissed at me, but I was pissed at them so it didn't matter."

NOTABLE: The win sets up a Friday matchup of the NBA's two hottest teams. The Grizzlies take their eight-game winning streak to Miami where the Heat is on a 12-game roll. That game will be nationally televised on ESPN at 8 p.m. ET. ... The Grizzlies went back to their strength by getting the ball to their post players -- Zach Randolph and Gasol. Randolph had a game-high 22 points and 10 rebounds while Gasol added 21 points and a game-high 12 boards. Randolph, the team's lone All-Star this year, has recorded double-doubles in all five games since the break. ... Dallas had 21 turnovers, a night after committing 20 miscues against Milwaukee, which also resulted in a loss. ... Coming off a 21-point, 20-rebound effort against Milwaukee, Dirk Nowitzki was held to 10 points (4-for-11) and four rebounds. He had just two points in the second half. Dallas' leading scorer, former Grizzly guard O.J. Mayo had 11 points on 5-for-13 shooting. ... The Grizzlies starting backcourt of Mike Conley and Tony Allen was a combined 4-for-20 from the floor for 14 points. ... Shawn Marion led Dallas with 16 points, 10 of those coming in the opening quarter.
