Timberwolves-Suns Preview

The Minnesota Timberwolves and Phoenix Suns each won in their return from the All-Star break, but neither team has gotten back into the win column since.

One of the two last-place clubs will change that Tuesday night when they meet in Phoenix.

Minnesota (20-33) fended off Philadelphia 94-87 on Wednesday, but then allowed Oklahoma City and Golden State to reach the century mark in back-to-back losses.

The Timberwolves couldn't get enough stops late in the fourth quarter Sunday against the Warriors. They led by six with 6:20 remaining but were outscored 15-8 down the stretch in a 100-99 defeat.

Former Arizona star Derrick Williams had 23 points - one shy of matching a season high - and 12 rebounds in the defeat, and Nikola Pekovic scored 21.

"We played well and gave ourselves a great chance to win. We just couldn't finish it," coach Rick Adelman said. "These are things we've got to learn from."

The Western Conference-worst Suns (18-39) have lost three in a row since a 102-98 win at Portland last Tuesday, falling 97-87 Sunday to San Antonio to match a season high with a fourth consecutive home defeat.

Phoenix trailed by as many as 21 in the fourth quarter of that game before making the final score a little more respectable. Marcin Gortat had 21 points and 12 rebounds, but was the only Suns player to make more than three field goals against the league's leading team.

"We just have to be smarter and just continue to get better execution-wise at both ends of the floor," interim coach Lindsey Hunter said. "We'll continue to chip away at getting better."

Minnesota came out on top 111-107 despite Luis Scola's season-high 33 points when these teams met at the Target Center on Dec. 29. With 28 points, Pekovic was one of three Timberwolves players to score at least 20, but one of those will not play Tuesday.

Kevin Love, who had 23 points and 18 rebounds in that win, is hoping to return from a fractured right hand in time to play the final 15 to 20 games this season. The Timberwolves will try to make up for his absence while earning back-to-back wins over Phoenix for the first time in more than eight years.

Minnesota won five straight in the series from Dec. 3, 2003-Dec. 3, 2004, then lost 20 of the next 25 matchups before prevailing in two of the past three. The Timberwolves snapped a nine-game skid to the Suns and a five-game losing streak in Phoenix with a 127-124 victory in their most recent visit March 12.

Love's 30 points led six Minnesota players in double figures in that win. Pekovic had 24 and Williams scored 19 off the bench on 7-of-10 shooting.

Jared Dudley scored a season-high 28 points for Phoenix and is averaging 22.0 on 63.4 percent shooting in his last three home games against Minnesota.

The Timberwolves are beginning a three-game trip having dropped 13 of their last 15 on the road, including six in a row at West foes.

Suns survive OT for 84-83 win over Wolves

PHOENIX (AP) Season-lows seemed to come every quarter. So did missed shots, passes sailing into the stands, grimaces from coaches.

Phoenix came up with just enough plays to pull it out, ending a momentum-swinging game between two of the NBA's worst teams.

Marcin Gortat hit big shots at the end of regulation and overtime, helping the Suns end a three-game losing streak with an 84-83 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday night.

"We made it a little tougher on ourselves, but we will take it," Suns interim coach Lindsey Hunter said. "We still just for some reason do not finish quarters the way we are supposed to."

Phoenix and Minnesota played a game about like you'd expect from teams that came in a combined 34 games under .500.

The Timberwolves set a season low with 33 points in the first half to trail by 14. The Suns let them back in it with a season low of their own: 11 points in the third quarter.

Phoenix pulled away to start the fourth quarter, building a 13-point lead. Minnesota pulled back, rallying to go up by two with 25 seconds left.

Gortat answered in regulation with a layup on a between-the-legs feed from Goran Dragic with 13 seconds left. Gortat then put the Suns up four with 45 seconds left in overtime with another layup, this one on a feed by Wesley Johnson.

Phoenix still had to sweat it out.

Derrick Williams hit a 3-pointer with 30 seconds left to pull the Timberwolves within 84-83 and Nikola Pekovic blocked Johnson's runner at the other end to give Minnesota a shot. The Timberwolves got a good look, too, but Alexey Shved's layup rolled off the rim.

Gortat, Johnson and Markieff Morris had 14 points apiece. Jermaine O'Neal added 10 points and 13 rebounds for the Suns, who ended a four-game home losing streak.

Williams had 21 points and 12 rebounds, Pekovic finished with 18 points and 12 boards, and J.J. Barea had 16 points for Minnesota, which shot 34 percent for its 19th loss in 23 games.

"You've got to make plays in this league and we're going to have to learn how to make those plays," Timberwolves coach Rick Adelman said. "It's as simple as that."

The Timberwolves and Suns each won coming out of the All-Star break, a nice little ray of hope.

Since then, both teams had settled back into their losing ways, combining for five straight losses.

It's no surprise the way things have gone this season.

Minnesota has been plagued by injuries - most notably Kevin Love's broken hand - and entered Tuesday's game last in the Northwest Division, 19 1/2 games behind Oklahoma City after blowing an early 16-point lead in a loss to Golden State on Sunday.

Phoenix cost coach Alvin Gentry his job on Jan. 22 and hasn't been any better under Hunter. With Sunday's 10-point loss to San Antonio, the Suns had lost 11 of 16 under Hunter, falling 21 1/2 games behind the Pacific Division-leading Los Angeles Clippers.

They played like last-place teams at the start, too.

Minnesota had five turnovers and missed three of four shots in the first 3 minutes. Phoenix opened 2 for 10 and had four turnovers.

It got only marginally better the rest of the quarter as they traded turnovers and missed shots.

How bad was it? The Suns matched a season low in the first quarter and still led 16-15.

"We started off slow again," Williams said. "We're not making shots like we know we can."

Phoenix at least got better. Minnesota didn't, at least not until later.

The Suns' reserves opened the second quarter with a 10-0 run as the Timberwolves missed 10 straight shots and threw a pass that ended up in the stands next to their bench.

Even after making a few shots in the final 90 seconds, Minnesota was 13 for 44 - 1 for 10 from 3-point range - and had six shots blocked. Williams had 13 of its 33 points on 6-of-12 shooting.

Once the third quarter started, the Suns started throwing the ball away and missing shots.

Minnesota opened the second half with a 10-4 run and cut Phoenix's lead to 55-51 on a hard drive by Williams with 2 minutes left. The Suns made 5 of 20 shots and had seven turnovers in an 11-point third quarter.

The Suns turned it on again to open the fourth quarter, going up 68-55 on a 3-pointer by Markieff Morris. Minnesota fought back with a 16-3 run, tying it at 71-all on Barea's 3-pointer from the corner with 4 1-2 minutes left, setting up the close finish that Phoenix pulled out.

"It feels great," said Dragic, who had 10 points and seven assists. "I mean, we get a win."

Notes: Minnesota F Andrei Kirilenko limped off in the first quarter with a left calf strain and didn't return. He missed five games with a strained right quadriceps before playing the past four games. ... The Suns have won 11 of 13 in the series. ... Minnesota's previous season low for the first half was 37 against Memphis on Feb. 10. ... Phoenix hadn't won at home since Jan. 30 against the Lakers.

Notebook: Suns 84, Timberwolves 83

THE FACTS: The once high-octane Phoenix Suns don't have much firepower these days. But they can at least field a full roster of NBA players, something that seems beyond the reach of the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Even so, the Suns had barely enough to squeak past the undermanned Timberwolves 84-83 in overtime in Phoenix Tuesday night.

Wolves forward Andrei Kirilenko lasted only 10 minutes before he had to leave with a strained left calf. He joined the already injured Kevin Love, Brandon Roy, Chase Budinger and Malcolm Lee.

The Suns (19-39) led throughout overtime and much of regulation. They were even up 18 points, 47-29 late in the first half. Yet both in regulation and overtime, the Wolves (20-34) had a chance in the closing seconds.

In overtime, the Suns stripped Derrick Wiliiams of the ball on a drive to the basket, leading to a fast break by P.J. Tucker and an 82-78 lead. Then the Wolves' J.J. Barea and the Suns' Marcin Gortat traded driving layups as the Suns maintained an 84-80 lead.

Williams hit a 3-pointer to draw the Wolves to 84-83 with 31 seconds left. Wesley Johnson's driving shot was blocked by Nikola Pekovic. The Wolves missed their final chance to win when Alexey Shved's driving layup rolled off the rim.

The Suns got 14 points and nine rebounds from reserve Markieff Morris, 14 points and seven rebounds from Gortat and 10 points and 13 boards from backup Jermaine O'Neal.

But the surprise was backup small forward Johnson, drafted No. 4 overall by the Wolves in 2010, who has been dusted off by the Suns in recent games after seldom playing.

He had 14 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals. He also covered guards when the Wolves went with a small lineup.

"You want those minutes, especially at the end of the game," said Johnson, who played 36 minutes. "I've been anxious to play the whole season. ... I've been given the opportunity. It's up to me to take advantage."

"He was great at both ends of the floor," Suns coach Lindsey Hunter said. "He had to guard a point guard ... and he rebounded really well. I hope this can continue to catapult him into growing as a player."

The Suns led throughout regulation, but the Wolves clawed back attacking the weak interior defense of Gortat and Morris. Then Barea hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 71 with 4:25 left.

Two possessions seemed to doom the Suns. They failed to get off a shot coming out of timeout, with Morris getting stripped of the ball. That led to a fast break and 3-point play by Dante Cunningham and a 76-75 Minnesota lead.

Then, in the final minute, Goran Dragic passed up an open shot and turned the ball over. At the other end, Ricky Rubio hit only 1-for-2 at the line for a 77-75 lead. Gortat hit a runner in the lane with 13.6 seconds left. Rubio missed a jumper and the game went to overtime.

Williams led the Wolves with 21 points and 12 boards. Pekovic had 18 points and 12 rebounds. Barea came off the bench to add 17 points.

"We're going to have to learn how to make plays," said Timberwolves coach Rick Adelman.

QUOTABLE: "With his length and athleticism, he can guard at a lot of positions. We'll continue to push him, and hopefully, he responds."

THE STAT: The Suns won a tight game despite shooting 5-for-14 from the line. Outside of Gortat's 4-for-6, they shot 1-for-8.

TURNING POINT: When Shved's driving layup rolled off the rim with three seconds left in overtime.

HOT: Nobody.

NOT: The Wolves shot an anemic 34 percent, including 26 percent on 3-pointers. They also missed 9 of 25 free throws.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Michael Beasley's erratic season continues for the Suns. He had a notable upswing after Hunter took over as coach for Alvin Gentry. But he's hit bottom again. The past five games, he's averaged just 4.2 points on 29 percent shooting. He barely played in a loss Sunday night to the Spurs.

The Wolves' Williams, generally a disappointment after being picked No. 2 overall two years ago, is on a roll. Over the past nine games, he's averaging 16.7 points plus 8.7 rebounds.

ROOKIE WATCH: For Minnesota, Shved shot 2-for-9 for five points with one assist in 23 minutes, while the Suns' Kendall Marshall shot 1-for-3 for two points with four assists in 12 minutes.

NOTABLE: In an oddity, the Suns became the first team to win an overtime game with 84 or fewer points since the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets downed Orlando 84-78 on Jan. 16, 2007.
