The slumping Chicago Bulls are coming off the worst shooting display in the NBA this season, but they posted the best effort in the league in 2012-13 during an earlier matchup against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Chicago tries to bounce back from a forgettable performance Tuesday night as it opens a three-game homestand seeking a 12th consecutive win over a Cleveland team that will be without Kyrie Irving.

The Bulls (32-24), averaging 92.5 points to rank near the bottom of the NBA, have been limited to 87.6 per game during a 3-6 stretch. Things got especially ugly for Chicago in a 102-72 loss at Oklahoma City on Sunday.

Nate Robinson had 13 points and shot 2 of 14 as the Bulls were held to 29.06 percent from the field - their lowest mark in nine seasons and slightly worse than Charlotte's 29.11 effort versus the Thunder in November.

"It was bad tonight," Joakim Noah told the team's official website after scoring eight points and going 2 of 9 from the field. "We took steps backward. That's what's frustrating. There's really no excuse. We've just got to bounce back ASAP.

" ... It's not the time to feel sorry for ourselves. We've got a home stretch coming up and things move fast in this league. We've got to bounce back fast."

Chicago, which continues to play without Derrick Rose, is now expected to be without Taj Gibson for the next two weeks because of a sprained MCL in his left knee. The Bulls, however, could have Rose's replacement, Kirk Hinrich, back. Hinrich has missed 10 of 11 games due to a sore right elbow.

"We've got enough. We have to do our jobs. We've shown when we do that, we're capable of beating anyone," coach Tom Thibodeau said. "We have to be mentally tougher, we have to be stronger. When you face a little bit of adversity with whatever, when you're short-handed, you have to dig down and get the job done."

Chicago has certainly taken care of business against Cleveland (18-38) of late. The Bulls have shot 50.5 percent and outscored the Cavaliers by an average of 17.8 points during their 11-game winning streak in the series.

Included in that run is a 115-86 road victory Nov. 2. Chicago went 44 for 69 from the field for the highest field-goal percentage (63.8) by any team this season.

Making matters worse for the Cavaliers is Irving has been ruled out Tuesday because of a knee injury.

Irving, sixth in the league with 23.3 points per game, has been instrumental to Cleveland's success, averaging 16.1 in its last nine losses, compared to 30.2 points in its past 11 wins.

Irving has scored 15 points in each of his two matchups with Chicago this season, going a combined 10 for 26 (38.5 percent) from the floor.

Cleveland posted back-to-back wins over New Orleans and Orlando before coming up short 109-105 at Miami on Sunday. The Cavaliers, who trailed by 22 in the third quarter, led by eight with under five minutes to go but couldn't hold on.

"You can't give up easy baskets," coach Byron Scott said. "We had a very good chance against a very good basketball team, the world champions, and we lost the game because of mental mistakes. That's just something that we can't have happen again."

Rookie Dion Waiters, averaging 18.5 points and 51.7 percent shooting over the last four games, scored a team-high 26. C.J. Miles made five 3-pointers and finished with 19 points off the bench.

Cavs stop slide against Bulls with 101-98 victory

CHICAGO (AP) Dion Waiters scored on jumpers, turnarounds and an assortment of moves in the lane. Shaun Livingston made a couple of a big plays in a rare start, and Wayne Ellington provided some scoring punch when the reserves were in the game.

Even without Kyrie Irving, the improving Cleveland Cavaliers had too much talent for the banged-up Chicago Bulls.

Waiters scored 25 points, Livingston added 15 in the same state where he starred in high school and the Cavs held on for a 101-98 victory on Tuesday night that snapped an 11-game losing streak against the Bulls.

"Without Kyrie, we knew it was going to be tough, period," Cleveland coach Byron Scott said. "But I thought guys stepped up big time."

While Irving rested a sore right knee in street clothes on the sideline, Waiters converted a fadeaway jumper and a layup before Tyler Zeller drove along the baseline for a layup that helped Cleveland open an 87-78 lead with 7:33 left in the game.

The Bulls were down two when they got the ball back with 37.8 seconds left, but Luol Deng missed a long jumper and Livingston hit two free throws to make it 100-96. Luke Walton then forced a turnover to get the ball back for the Cavs.

Ellington finished with 13 points as Cleveland held on for its third win in the last four games, bouncing back from a difficult 109-105 loss at Miami on Sunday.

"We've been playing some very solid basketball last month, month-and-a-half," Walton said. "We still struggle down the stretch once in a while, here and there. But we're grinding and we're learning and we're definitely a much better team right now than we were at the beginning of the season."

Carlos Boozer scored 27 points and Deng had 26 for Chicago, which has dropped five of seven. Kirk Hinrich returned to the lineup after missing three consecutive games with a lingering right elbow issue and finished with 11 points, 11 assists and six rebounds.

"Until we get the level of intensity up and play with high energy on both ends of the floor, play for 48 minutes, the results are not going to be good," Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said. "You get what you deserve in this league and we're getting what we deserve right now, so until we change that we're going to have problems."

The Bulls played their first game of the season without reserve forward Taj Gibson, who sprained his left knee when he stepped on the foot of Oklahoma City guard Reggie Jackson in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 102-72 loss to the Thunder. Gibson is expected to miss at least two weeks in another devastating injury for Chicago.

Derrick Rose has missed the entire season while he recovers from major left knee surgery, and Hinrich also has missed a bunch of games due to a myriad of injuries.

"We have to find a way," said Bulls center Joakim Noah, who has been playing with a right foot injury. "We have to play with more urgency and play together. I think that is disappointing right now. It's been a long stretch where we haven't been playing great basketball."

Alonzo Gee finished with 11 points for the Cavaliers, who open a five-game homestand against Toronto on Wednesday. Tristan Thompson added 10 points and eight rebounds.

Chicago and Cleveland handed the lead back and forth for much of the third quarter. Three consecutive charging calls on the Bulls helped the Cavaliers open a 72-67 advantage on Walton's long jumper with two minutes left in the period, but Noah found Deng inside to help Chicago get within one.

The Bulls had a chance to go in front in the final seconds of the third, but Marco Belinelli's 3-point attempt was blocked by Livingston, and Ellington hit a 3 as time expired to lift Cleveland to a 75-71 lead.

Waiters was 10 for 16 from the field and is averaging 19.8 points in his last five games. The rookie, who was the No. 4 overall pick in last year's draft, had 26 points in the loss to Miami.

"Just being patient, letting the game come to me, and just taking what the defense gives me," Waiters said. "That's what I'm trying to do is just be aggressive, looking to attack, keep the defense on their heels."

NOTES: Rose and Irving have never faced each other in an NBA game. "Well, I think we're all looking forward to that," Scott said. "My greatest hope is that No. 1 that Derrick Rose comes back and he's back to being the old Derrick Rose. If that happens and they get a chance to go against each other, I think that would be very interesting." ... Livingston played his prep ball at Peoria Central H.S. ... Chicago's 115-86 win at Cleveland on Nov. 2 is the worst loss of the season for the Cavaliers.

THE FACTS: For the first time in 12 games and almost three years, the Cleveland Cavaliers defeated their Central Division rivals the Chicago Bulls 101-98 Tuesday at the United Center. Dion Waiters led the Cavaliers with 25 points, and Shaun Livingston scored 15 points in a starting role. Bulls forward Carlos Boozer had 27 points and Luol Deng had 26, while guard Kirk Hinrich came back after missing three games due to a sore elbow and had 11 points and 11 assists.

THE FACTS II: The Cavaliers played without star point guard Kyrie Irving due to a sore knee, while the Bulls played without backup power forward Taj Gibson who has a sprained MCL. Livingston started in Irving's place. The Bulls have lost seven of their last 10 games.

THE STAT: After playing to a 48-48 first half tie, the Bulls shot 57 percent in the second half and still trailed most of the second half and lost the lead for good at the 6:36 mark of the third quarter.

THE STAT II: The Cavaliers made 16 of 19 free throws, had just 10 turnovers and out-rebounded the Bulls 39-34, led by eight boards each from Tristan Thompson and Tyler Zeller.

THE STAT III: The Bulls had 33 assists on 39 baskets for the game.

TURNING POINT: A 3-pointer by Livingston at the third quarter buzzer gave Cleveland a four-point lead going into the final period, and they raised the lead to nine points with 7:33 remaining. The Bulls cut the lead to one point as Boozer scored eight straight points for the Bulls, but key baskets by Waiters and Luke Walton created space for the Cavaliers. Then Walton came up with the play of the game, stealing a lazy inbounds pass by Boozer with 15 seconds left to secure the win.

QUOTABLE II: "Luke got the game ball. The game wasn't over, and he just keeps playing and playing. He just knows how to win."

INJURY UPDATE: Irving is listed day-to-day with his sore knee. Gibson is expected to be out for two weeks with his sprained MCL. Although Hinrich played 33 minutes, he is still considered day-to-day with his sore elbow.

HOT: Waiters was 10 for 16 from the field for his 25 points. With Livingston going six for 11, the Cavaliers' starting backcourt was 16 for 27.

BAD MOVE: With Gibson out, the Bulls have little in the way of support for the front line and center Joakim Noah played 41 minutes, Deng played almost 40 and Boozer played 39. Backup center Nazr Mohammed played just six minutes.

ROOKIE WATCH: Besides Waiters' great performance, Tyler Zeller of the Cavaliers played 28 minutes, scored four points and had eight rebounds.

NOTABLE: The Cavaliers are 8-2 in their last 10 games against Eastern Conference opponents. ... The Bulls lost for the first time this season in a game in which they shot at least 50 percent. ... The Cavaliers play their next five games at home. ... The Bulls are just 15-14 at home this season.
