With a chance to move into a tie atop the Atlantic Division, the Brooklyn Nets seemed to lose their clutch starting shooting guard at the wrong time.

The Nets, however, hope to have Joe Johnson back in the lineup on Tuesday night when they visit the New Orleans Hornets.

A four-game winning streak put Brooklyn (33-24) in position to finally catch rival New York for first place in the Atlantic with a victory on Friday. The Nets, however, couldn't take advantage of their opportunity, losing 106-96 to Houston while playing without Johnson for the first time because of plantar fasciitis in his left foot.

Johnson has a league-best 23 points on 7-of-8 shooting in the last 24 seconds of a final quarter with the game within three points. Brooklyn certainly missed its second-leading scorer (17.0 ppg) on Sunday when it failed to score in the last 2:50, and a five-point lead turned into a 76-72 loss to Memphis.

"It's hard for me sitting here and watching," Johnson said. "You always can look at a game and think, 'I could have made a difference in that game'."

Now back to two full games behind the Knicks, the Nets may need the veteran down the stretch against a New Orleans team that has won seven of 11 at home. Johnson will be a game-time decision on Tuesday.

"We'll see how it feels and we'll go from there," he said.

The Hornets' Anthony Davis appeared to be fine on Sunday, just two days after leaving a loss to Dallas with a knee injury. The 2012 first overall pick led the way with 20 points and eight rebounds in a 110-95 win over Sacramento that stopped a three-game losing streak.

"You got a little taste of what (Davis) can do every night," said Ryan Anderson, who added 17 points. "He's learning, still learning as a player how he can be most effective."

Davis has been especially good at home lately, averaging 16.5 points and 10.0 boards in his last four in New Orleans.

Eric Gordon has scored 20.0 per game in his last three at home after finishing with 17 and a season-high eight assists on Sunday.

The Hornets (20-37) averaged just 87.8 points in their first 18 home games, but have improved to 100.1 in their last nine.

Brooklyn has won three of four on the road despite averaging 88.3 points on 38.4 percent shooting in those games.

If Johnson is unable to play, C.J. Watson is likely to get his third straight start in the backcourt. Watson has averaged 16.2 points while shooting 15 for 24 from 3-point range over his last five games.

Deron Williams, who led the Nets with 24 points on Sunday, practiced with a compression sleeve on Monday and appears ready to play despite getting kicked in the calf late in the game.

Brook Lopez, though, looks to bounce back after getting benched for the final quarter against the Grizzlies. Lopez, the team's leading scorer (18.7 ppg), shot 3 of 10 and was held to nine points for the second time in three games. Coach P.J. Carlesimo said that backup Andray Blatche "was playing better on both ends and was playing good defense".

The Nets have lost four straight in New Orleans and seven of nine overall in the series.

Williams, Lopez lead Nets past Hornets, 101-97

NEW ORLEANS (AP) Deron Williams snapped out of a lackluster second half in time to save the Brooklyn Nets from a painful collapse.

One game after coming up empty in the final minutes of a close loss to Memphis, Williams scored for 11 of his 33 points in the final 1:24 in New Orleans, and the Nets snapped a two-game skid by holding off the Hornets, 101-97 on Tuesday night.

"I especially wanted to step up after how the last game went down the stretch for me personally," Williams said. "It feels good to get it going, especially down the stretch and be able to close out a game. It's something I've kind of struggled with this year and I was really successful at it most of my career, so it feels good to be able to finally have a game like that."

Williams was coming off a game against the Grizzlies in which he went scoreless during the last six minutes, with one shot blocked and a turnover with 10.9 seconds left with his team trailing 74-72.

After scoring 20 points in the first half in New Orleans, Williams had only one basket during the next 22:36 as the Hornets nearly erased a deficit that had been as large as 22. Then Williams drained a timely 3, added a fadeaway jumper, and followed that with six free throws in the final 18.7 seconds to seal it.

"He played a great game. That's why he's an All-Star," Nets coach P.J. Carlesimo said. "When he plays like that, we are hard to beat."

It was a timely performance as well. Joe Johnson missed his third straight game with a sore left heel after going through warm-ups with the hope of coming back. Brooklyn had lost its last two without him.

"We thought he was going to go tonight until right before the game," Williams said. "So that was kind of a blow and I just wanted to be there for my team."

Brook Lopez added 20 points and four blocks while playing against his twin brother, Robin, and Keith Bogans added 12 points for Brooklyn, hitting all four of his shots, including three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter.

Williams made four of his eight 3-point attempts, and the Nets shot 60 percent (12 of 20) from long range as a team.

Greivis Vasquez scored 20 and Robin Lopez 14 for New Orleans, which has lost four of five.

"They just kind of jumped on us early," Robin Lopez said. "It was a combination of their aggressiveness and they hit a few jumpers."

The Nets hit seven of their first nine shots in racing to a 17-8 lead. By the end of the opening quarter, Williams had 14 points on 6 of 8 shooting, including 2 of 3 from 3-point range, and Brooklyn led 31-20.

"That is unacceptable," Hornets coach Monty Williams said. "We have to bring the energy and effort because we don't have high-level talent at every position. We just didn't have it in the first quarter."

The lead grew to 51-29 on Williams' free throws with 4:36 left in the second quarter. Then Eric Gordon, who had 10 points, made a jumper and layup in succession, helping the Hornets close the quarter on a 12-6 run to cut their deficit to 57-41 at halftime.

New Orleans was still down by 18 early in the third quarter, but later used an 8-0 run ignited by Robin Lopez's putback and Anthony Davis' layup to get as close as 66-59 in the period, and trailed only 73-65 heading into the final quarter after Jason Smith's fast-break layup in the final second.

Smith's jumper had New Orleans as close as 84-80 with more than five minutes still to go, but Lopez and Williams began to take over again, scoring the rest of the Nets' points and briefly building the lead back to nine inside the final two minutes.

"It's definitely good to get a win like this, but I try not to put too much stock into one game," Brook Lopez said.

The Hornets cut it to three three times inside the final half-minute, with Ryan Anderson, who scored 13 points, hitting a 3 and a tough turnaround, and Vasquez adding a 3.

Each time, however, Williams responded with free throws to keep New Orleans at bay.

NOTES: Davis left the game late in the third quarter with a left shoulder injury. Hornets officials said he was available to return to the game and he remained on the bench, but Williams said he chose not to play him again. ... Brooklyn's C.J. Watson, who started for Johnson, had 10 points. ... This was the first meeting between the teams this season, with the second coming March 12, the day after the Hornets' Davis turns 20. ... The Hornets had won their previous four at home against the Nets. ... Brooklyn improved to 14-12 on the road, while the Hornets fell to 10-18 at home.

THE FACTS: The Brooklyn Nets nearly left New Orleans with a three-game losing streak.

Instead the Nets held off the New Orleans Hornets 101-97 behind Deron Williams, who scored the last 11 Brooklyn points in the final 1:24. The run, which included six consecutive made free throws, helped the Nets maintain the lead in spite of New Orleans pulling to within 99-97 with 1.7 seconds to play.

Williams finished with 33 points and eight assists while Brook Lopez added 20 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four blocks.

The Nets led by as many 22 points in the first half but New Orleans began to buckle down on defense following the break. After allowing Brooklyn to shoot better than 60 percent in the first half, the Nets (34-24) could only hit on 35.9 percent of their second-half shots.

And New Orleans began to heat up, cutting into Brooklyn's lead with dinks and dunks and a few 3-pointers.

But the Nets hit the shots that mattered, beginning with Lopez's driving layup with 2:18 to go and the Hornets having pulled to within 86-82.

New Orleans (20-38) couldn't back up its win against Sacramento on Sunday with a consecutive solid performance Tuesday.

Not that point guard Greivis Vasquez and center Robin Lopez didn't try. Vasquez put up 20 points, grabbed eight rebounds and had seven assists while Lopez, battling his brother, added 14 points and seven rebounds.

Brooklyn, which had lost to Houston and Memphis heading into New Orleans, won in spite of Joe Johnson sitting his third straight game with a left heel injury. The Nets are now off until Friday, when they host Dallas.

The Hornets, meanwhile, must regroup immediately. They travel to Oklahoma City for a Wednesday game. For the second time in three games, rookie forward Anthony Davis didn't return after sustaining an injury even though he could have returned. Two games ago it was a sprained right knee; Tuesday night it was a left shoulder injury.

THE STAT: 12 of 20 -- Looking at the box score, all stats point to a Hornets win. They forced six more turnovers, scored more points in the paint and had more second-chance points. But the one stat that separated the two teams was the 12-for-20 mark the Nets recorded from beyond the arc. Brooklyn hit on four of five 3-pointers in the fourth quarter.

TURNING POINT: Brooklyn was reeling in the second half and the Hornets had cut a 22-point deficit to four on a Vasquez layup with 4:01 to play. But then the Nets' Lopez provided his team with a momentum-killing layup. After Eric Gordon missed an 11-foot jumper, Lopez was fouled and hit both free throws pushing Brooklyn's lead to 90-82. Though the Hornets closed to within two, that stretch stunted New Orleans' momentum and allowed Brooklyn to regroup and hold on.

HOT: The Nets' Keith Bogans may be playing a reserve role with Brooklyn, but his 4-for-4 performance Tuesday night helped key the win. He was 3-for-3 from 3-point range in the fourth quarter, answering New Orleans baskets each time.

NOT: New Orleans' Gordon couldn't get going against Brooklyn and scored only 10 points on 4-for-15 shooting. In the second half, he had only four points on 1-for-7 shooting.

NOTABLE: The Nets finished with 28 assists, one shy of their season high. ... The Hornets' eight turnovers tied for a season low by the team. ... New Orleans' bench outscored Brooklyn's 43-30, the 40th time in 58 games that has happened. ... Brooklyn improved to 1-2 with the starting lineup it used Tuesday (Gerald Wallace, Reggie Evans, Lopez, C.J. Watson, Williams).
